🌟🧶Happy International Yarnbombing Day!! 🧶🌟 My fella showed me my first yarnbomb in early 2014. It was a stop sign down by the creek that had been yarnbombed to look like a flower w/ large green leaves and a long knit stem. He thought it would be something I’d be interested in and boy howdy was he right. I installed my first yarnbomb at Powderhorn Park in May of 2014, 5 years later and I haven’t stopped since! 🤗 If you love to knit, crochet, felt, sew, weave, or embroider I urge you to leave your fiber art out in your neighborhood sometime. You’ll be delighted by all the smiles you see. There’s nothing like going for a walk and stumbling on some art that another person has left out in the world for you to find. I’m 30 years old and I still freak out when I discover a fairy door or gnome garden on the BLVD. Don’t even get me started on the @mows510 doors! 🌼Yesterday I had the honor of yarnbombing the John Fluevog shoe store in Uptown Minneapolis. I chose fresh florals as the theme to celebrate the new spring shoe designs that are now in the store. I have to be honest, I had never been to Fluevog until I installed the yarnbomb and now I'm hooked. They have some of the prettiest shoes I have ever seen in my life! Crocheted rocks are like sprinkles for me. I wanna put them on every yarnbomb & in every exhibition. I'm not the only one in my family that likes rock art. My dad loves to stack rocks into gravity defying piles everywhere he goes. If you see rocks stacked on top of each other anywhere in the Twin Cities, chances are good that my dad was just there. Before grandma & grandpa passed, my dad went to help them out in Colorado. They had a lovely house in Grand Junction with a front yard was made of large, round, perfect for stacking rocks. Every day he would go out and make his rock stacks on and it drove my Grandma bonkers! She didn't understand why he had to go out and stack the nice rocks in her yard so after he made a rock formation she'd come out and knock it over. The rock piles & their destruction became an on going joke between the two of them. Dad would stack the piles every day and grandma would come out and knock them down. The morning after my grandma died my dad looked out the window at the lawn and saw that every single one of his rock piles that he had made the previous day been knocked down in the night. I'm sure many would say that it was heavy winds the night before but Dad & I believe that it was grandma knocking down his rock piles one more time. Fun story time: While I was installing the yarnbomb on the left a fella came up to me and said: "Hey, will you put yarn on my stick?" ...As you can imagine, I was confused. This guy was the 3rd person to come up to me that day and the other two I'm not sure if they were actually talking to me, at me, or to people that I couldn't see... I begged his pardon and he pointed at a stick in the ground about 4ft away. Turns out there was a random deep ankle breaking hole in the cement behind me. This gentleman lived near by and didn't want anyone to fall in so he placed a tall wooden stick in the hole and taped a plastic bag around it so no one would get hurt. Really nice dude, right?! So I said of course I'll yarnbomb your stick! On the right is my spur of the moment pink knits I made to help draw attention to his stick and hopefully save folks a trip to the emergency room. Guerrilla kindness meets guerrilla art. This lil interaction had me smiling all week so I thought I'd share it. There’s happy, and then there’s cow kitty asleep in the sun on top of a crochet heart happy. 💗 I’m blessed to have two kitties who love to be by my side while I work but have zero interest in playing with the yarn. However, they do think all completed work is a cat bed... 😻 This heart yarnbomb/cat bed is going to be a part of the #RosedaleYarnbomb. I am straight up giddy about this installation! I hope you all have a chance to see it. There are so many things I’ve always wanted to do that I have the opportunity to do with this installation. For example: Yarnbomb a large group of lamp posts ✅ Yarnbomb a staircase ✅ Create a window display! ✅ The puppy backdrop wasn’t on my to do list but I’m ridiculously excited about it too. Not to mention the radical granny bench (when you see it you’ll totally get the name). I think what I love most though is the location. The whole point of yarnbombing is to make people smile. You’re walking along doing your thing when out of nowhere there’s a giant heart on a fence, a scarf on a statue, or a stop sign that looks like a knit flower. It’s so random and silly that you have to smile! Rosedale Center has been doing some really cool remodeling but I don’t think anyone expects to walk out of William & Sonoma to see a street covered in yarn! "If history repeats itself, I am so getting a dinosaur!" This cute critter started out as a cat, then became a Triceratops, and at the end she morphed into a Dilophosaurus which scared the heck out of me (Jurassic park left some scars). I frogged her larger mane and replaced it w/ a delicate crochet doily. She looks a lot less scary and much more friendly now. You can find Cera by the Northern Pacific-BNSF rail bridge on a fence that is frequently passed by runners and their dogs.
