A Look Back on TREASURE PLANET

So recently I rewatched TREASURE PLANET for the first time in about fifteen years and… I'm not gonna lie, it's still my personal favorite of the 2D Disney animated features from the early to mid-2000s.

Let's be real. Of the 2D features Disney released around that time period, TREASURE PLANET is one of the more solid films. ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE had some interesting ideas and some really nice design work and animation, but it really needed to be at least two hours long if it wanted to flesh out the characters and the world-building without requiring supplementary material (like a special edition of Disney Adventure magazine). Hardly anybody remembers BROTHER BEAR was even a thing, and the less said about HOME ON THE RANGE, the better. (Seriously, that movie wasn't even worth the Steve Buscemi cameo.)

The only other film of that era that has really held up was LILO AND STITCH, and I'll admit it's probably a better film than TREASURE PLANET. It took more risks in terms of character, setting and originality, and emotionally it leaves more of an impact. (That scene when Nani sings to Lilo makes me cry like a baby every time.) My only problem with it is it always felt like two entirely different movies collided with each other and it never felt like they really meshed well. Otherwise, I agree with most fans that it’s a good film.

Also, of course, there was the excellent THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE, which was just such a huge departure from Disney’s normal schtick and trying something more Tex Avery-esque, only for it to be a perfect storm instead of a total crash and burn. That is much to be proud of.

Going back to TREASURE PLANET, I can understand that most folks walk away saying it’s an "okay" film. I, however, am not one of those people. I've had a real soft spot for this movie ever since I saw it, but now I appreciate this film for additional reasons.

Namely, the animation and effects work. Holy crap, is this movie gorgeous! It's like watching Don Bluth's ANASTASIA, except I don't have to feel guilty about historical inaccuracies. (Now it’s just scientific inaccuracies, but STAR WARS gets away with that all the time.)

Directors John Musker and Ron Clements had apparently wanted to do a sci-fi retelling of "Treasure Island" since before they started working on THE LITTLE MERMAID. With that in mind I do feel like this movie would have fared better with critics back in the early 90s during the Disney Renaissance. However at that time they would not have had such elaborate and detailed CG effects within arm's reach. There's something I really enjoy about the use of 3D backdrops so that they may do sweeping camera movements, and that's not even getting into the lighting effects to establish atmosphere.

What's more, there are a lot of subtleties to the character animation that I never appreciated until now. You could just pick one character and focus on him or her during the whole movie and find a lot of fun little quirks in their dialogue or walk cycles.

Admittedly, much of this film’s appeal probably depends on how much of an animation fan you are. In my case I was watching John Silver’s animation and I suspected that Glen Keane was probably in charge of animating him (as there are moments when Silver looks so much like Ratigan). Those suspicions were confirmed during the end credits and I was delightfully geeking out about it.

It’s also easy to see where this film might not have had a lot of mass appeal. Most of the focus on the story is on Jim Hawkins and his daddy issues, which by the early 2000s was already a cliche of a character arc. And it’s not helped by the fact that Jim himself is... well, kind of on the bland side as a protagonist. There’s not a lot about him that makes him any more or less interesting than any other teenage male lead. But for what it is I think the movie did fine at establishing and building the relationship between Jim and Silver, which does have its warm and comforting moments. For both of them.

And at least the film is straightforward with its plot and characters and it’s not a structural mess like HERCULES, a previous venture by Musker and Clements.

Something I’ve noticed over the years is that TREASURE PLANET has a little bit of a cult following. I distinctly remember this one time when I was taking a storyboard class in college; we were assigned to do a “Master Study” assignment by recreating the key story frames in our favorite scene in a favorite animated movie. One of my classmates picked the scene when Jim is brought home to the inn by the police and embarrasses his mother. I recall being so impressed, and even a little envious, that she got the character design style down to a T. (If you’re wondering what movie/scene I picked for my Master Study, I picked the Big Ben scene from THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE.)

Then, of course, some friends and I suspect that TREASURE PLANET might have fared better if it had been released a bit later, more towards the height of the Steampunk craze. It’s not quite what I would call “Steampunk”, as it takes place in a sort of alternate universe version of the 18th century and not the Gothic era, and most of their transport is solar-powered and not steam-based. Nevertheless it’s easy to see how fans of Steampunk could find it appealing, with its mostly earth-tone color pallet to evoke the painted illustrations of the classic novel it was based on. Also that combination of a pre-20th century aesthetic with out-of-this-world science fiction elements is pretty much, in my opinion, what makes Steampunk so much fun to play around with. Also, a robot made out of copper. End of story.

In terms of why this film didn’t do so well when it was released, I suspect what stunted its success was the marketing. I could be wrong, as I was actually living in Honduras at the time of the film’s release, but we got some TV stations from Denver, Colorado. I remember a lot of the TV spots spent most of their time highlighting the goofy comic relief moments with Morph, and there was a real emphasis on the presence of B.E.N., even though he's in less than one-third of the movie. In other words, the film's success might have been partially sabotaged by a marketing team that seemed to think if you don’t take your film seriously at all that will somehow draw in the crowd.

Although speaking of the comic relief characters, I actually don’t mind them that much. I always thought Morph had a lot of cute, funny moments that weren’t too obnoxious. As for B.E.N., I kind of have mixed feelings for him. On one hand, the directing team made better use of Martin Short’s improvisational skills than PEBBLE AND THE PENGUIN or WE’RE BACK! ever did. But on the other hand, does B.E.N. have to be so loud and shouty? However, while B.E.N. is a real screw-up, he’s not so much to the point where I want to see him get smashed with a sledgehammer. He’s generally likable, not at all loathsome, and just annoying enough, but not TOO annoying.

However while we’re still on the subject of B.E.N., I’d just like to add that the CG animation on him is really nice. Making him 3D gives him a sort of sense of solidity compared to his hand-drawn humanoid compadres, and to top it off his animation isn’t at all stiff or feels like the CG is holding him back. There is some really expressive squashing and stretching going on with his dialogue. It’s so subtle in places that you’d probably miss it if you’re not looking for it. A lot of CG animation studios at the time like Pixar and Dreamworks had not quite mastered squashing and stretching themselves, so kudos to Disney for pulling it off so well.

Now if I may indulge a little on why I remember this film fondly, my favorite characters were always Dr. Doppler and Captain Amelia. They are both fun and engaging on their own, but together they are weirdly adorable. Granted, I've always thought them getting together at the end was a bit rushed, but I still totally buy it.

(What I don't buy is that they'd be so eager to have kids after Doppler showed such annoyance and revulsion towards that toddler alien girl at the beginning. I get that the creators wanted some visual shorthand to indicate that they're an official couple, but they could have just been wearing wedding rings or throw in a little more of them dancing together.)

Part of the reason I love these characters on their own is the casting. I was already familiar with Emma Thompson from Ang Lee's adaptation of SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, and her character of Eleanor Dashwood was very quiet and reserved. You can imagine my disbelief and delight hearing her play an assertive, witty badass as Amelia. (As if I didn't already think Amelia’s design was cool.)

As for David Hyde Pierce, I had only occasionally watched FRASIER growing up, but when I saw this movie I was familiar with him through some other memorable voice acting roles, particularly that excellent Season 8 episode of THE SIMPSONS, “Brother From Another Series.” In other words, I already knew him to be funny, snarky and charismatic.

While I'm on about the casting, I feel like there's a totally wasted opportunity to have these two characters in a room together, say, before the black hole scene, exchanging witty banter to show how compatible they are in a casual setting. It’s a shame that Emma and David didn’t record their dialogue together, because with her being an accomplished writer and with his skills at improvisation, there could have been some good verbal combat by way of “Much Ado About Nothing-Meets-Frasier.”

But looking back, I remember I immediately loved Captain Amelia just on principal. As a kid I never really gravitated that much to any of the Disney princesses. I can’t really describe why, but it was mostly how they were marketed as just looking pretty and (arguably) kind of passive in their own stories. Not to mention how when Disney Princess became a brand, they really amped up the girly cutesy-ness to their preexisting images. Not to say there’s anything inherently wrong with cute or feminine things, but it really made me feel like a weirdo who somehow wasn’t fit to be called a girl.

Captain Amelia, on the other hand, had her own style of femininity by wearing a classy, more masculine captain’s uniform along with thigh-high high-heeled boots (that she has no problem running in). She had a no-nonsense attitude, she was focused and cool-headed in a stressful situation, she was downright snarky and took crap from no one. In other words, she was the type of woman I wanted to be when I grew up, and to this day she is my favorite Disney Lady, bar none.

And while I’m at it, I’m just going to add that I’ve always found Dr. Doppler more attractive than your standard Disney prince. Besides his character design looking like a canine version of Roger from 101 DALMATIONS, he just always seemed like he’d be fun to get a coffee with.

Well, that’s about all I really want to talk about regarding TREASURE PLANET. It’s a shame it’s not remembered by more people as it does have some really good elements to it, but in some regards I can kind of see why it wasn’t a huge critical success. If you haven’t seen it already I recommend checking it out as it’s a pretty solid standalone film that doesn’t need supplementary material and covers all the bases with the plot and some fun character moments here and there. If you’re an animation fan I cannot stress enough how you really need to watch it, or even rewatch it, because, again, the animation and effects work is just a real feast for the eyes.

Frank Ocean and His Forgotten Alter Ego Lonny Breaux

First of all blame @prizord for making me write this. He didn’t hold a gun to my head but he said he doesn’t claim this project and to me that’s even worse. Frank Ocean at the time was just a songwriter from my knowledge and looked to create songs for other artists. That’s cool but the songs should have (and thanks to the leak) stay his. Its a lot of songs kind of like listening to Chris Browns, heartbreak on a full moon. But since I love this project so much I’m just going to split the songs into categories that may interest you and let you soul search from there. This project has a lot to offer so why not take notice?

Five stars means take a listen for sure anything less means read the description and decide for yourself :)

Lets start with the fact that Frank Ocean can turn love into anything. A tattoo, A pair of jeans or even the game sim city. Lets jump right into the songs Frank showed his creative ability to turn love into metaphor we never expected.

1. Acura Integurl *****

Maybe he was making a lot of love in his car but this song basically says his car is the love of his life and its previous owner wasn’t as cool as him. Its an example of how we talk about our partners previous loves. like yeah you introduced me to this but I put you on to this. I love this song and the piano leading the way.

2. Bedtime Story ***

Frank ocean compares being heartbroken to not being read a bedtime story to help him sleep. This is a very “pop” track but it has r&b undertones. Its the perfect way to explain feeling lonely and honestly a very creative way to express being lonely. This song is about the lyrics more than anything. Also I love how the bedtime story he wants to hear are just three words. “I Love You”.

3. Blasted ****

Have you ever gotten a tattoo WITH your ex? not one of them or their name but just at the same time? I have and I think about who I was when I got it and what I was feeling also how I made sure it wasn’t reminiscent of him at all. LOL Frank  expresses in the song that this tattoo will be a representation of their love for each other and how it should be in color because her exes were in black and white. Too bad now we can just get tattoos removed but I knew where frank was going with this. 

4. Bricks and Steel *****

I love this song and although he’s not comparing love to Bricks And Steel. He expresses what happens when two people in love cant communicate with each other. Comparing communicating with his love to talking to bricks and steel. Maybe the relationship he sings about is over but it doesn’t take away from this song at all. He even goes as far to say his phone bill is on roaming when he tries to contact his significant other. 

5. Denim ****

I never knew I wanted to compare me and my future husbands relationship to a pair of Levi’s, but I mean in real talk we STILL thrift Levi’s. For Frank to tell me a love that last’s can be directly compared to the levi’s I cut up in the summer for college kids then I trust him. Honestly I feel like he created this to be apart of a ad and if he did who ever passed on it missed a great opportunity. Thanks to Frank’s vocals you FEEL this and it feels like summer on the beach. What an artist… I’m in awe right now.

6. Holly Baby **

This is too pop for me but its a great way to make Hollywood a monster.

7. J.O.B***

Frank describes being in love to a full time job and how if loving his partner made him money he’d be more passionate than he is at his current job. 

8. Miss You So*****

So I love this song but it means a lot to me because the day my cousin committed suicide I listened to this for hours. My cousin was not only gorgeous but she understood me. In this song Frank Ocean describes how he didn’t cease the moment with pictures?moments that he kept safe. This song is beautiful and whether it reminds you of an ex, family member or someone who passed along you will appreciate the feeling you get when Frank says he wishes he would have been more responsible with his memories and the moments he took for granted. My cousin committing suicide I felt like she stole many moments from me and that’s what I hear when I hear this song.

9.No Bonnie ***

No Bonnie is about letting someone hold on who would do so but you know they deserve better.

10. Old Terror ***

You ever dated someone immature? you will probably feel this on a spiritual level but its hella pop. I like the lyrics but I could hear this slowed down. He’s comparing someone he’s in love with to being childish. I love this song for the relation factor lol.

11. Richest Man In The Room*****

Frank Ocean describes the love of his life being amazing and beautiful enough to be hung in a museum for people to view but never have. How every time they are in a room although everyone is looking at his partner he actually has their heart, and how that is worth more than anything else he could imagine. this is on the pop side but one of my favorites. Let me marry the man who thinks having me on his arm is the best feeling in the world.

12. Rocket love ****

A very Pop track again but comparing love to the feeling of being launched into space is amazing. The visual this song gives is worth the 4 stars.

13. Taste*****

Instead of calling his significant other a gold digger he just describes/compares them having an expensive taste and how hard is to keep them fed. He also expresses how nothing he does will ever be enough. who ever he is singing to is demanding more. Its like damn every time he does something they want him to top that. I LOVE THIS SONG. Send this to those people who are hard to please.

14. The City*****

This is amazing. Imagine being love the thing that powered our city like scares/laughter lit the cities in monster inc? Anyway he describes heart break as being out of resources and love being the only thing that kept him going. Ever been depressed? If so this song will pull at your heartstrings.

1. Cant Be The Last Time ****

Frank Ocean is taking for granted all the chances he was given in the beginning  of relationship as an excuse for why he cant get it together. This is literally men lol he’s on this track begging knowing he knows better. but if you listen to this song you can imagine everything that is happening and that’s what makes it good.

2. Day Away **

This is super pop, but I like it. If you listen you know what it feels like to go back to a day that could change everything. This whole song is wishing that day never happened. We all have regrets and here he sings about wishing he could go back in time.

3.Dying for your love *****

This song is amazing. I play out the words in my mind in the way it relates to me. If I couldn’t do that I would imagine the way he sang it. I love this. One of my favorites because I think this is how every one of my relationships have ended. I’m trying and they aren’t, I let it get way past its expiration date and then I decide to leave. I love that Frank sings like someone EXHAUSTED. This would be on repeat before a few of my breakups had I heard it sooner.

4. Hardest Thing *****

This is falling in love for the first time(maybe second or third time) and RUNNING. Now the other person hates you but you still want them. I feel like if you send this song they will give you another chance and if not well at least you tried. You cant listen to this song and not go back to a memory and that’s what makes it beautiful. Even if you are mad it wasn’t expressed sooner you feel it.

5. Know Better *****

Lol for all yall who love dating rebounds this is for you. Your rebound going back to their ex and this song is literally your argument. This song would be magic in my ears cause I’m agreeing lol. It also brings attention to the fact that WE KNOW BETTER. All this energy on someone who didn’t get to heal could have went to a new love. Drama is always better and this song is it. This song is also DOPE AF! Frank even guilt tripped them at the end. This song makes you smile and that’s what music is about.

6. Ready *****

This is for every hopeless romantic who cant stay put. If you are like me and you move around a lot and you love change the visual this song gives you for that back home love is everything. I can imagine driving to a view and drinking champagne or wine. The great thing about this song is that everyone can feel that way and if Frank Ocean never did anything else its make us all get in touch with our romantic side on this track. Also this song screams CAR SEX lmao

7. She Wont Say Hello****

Lmao It’s not funny but basically his highschool sweetheart went to college and said fuck you! Although its not funny this song makes you feel for him. He is at home trusting his boo who wont even pick up his calls. Being 17 suddenly becomes a depressing memory.

8. Simply *****

If you just got cheated on don’t listen. Frank Ocean is explaining how him cheating was a SIMPLE mistake. Although I don’t agree this is beautiful af and I forgive him on behalf of who he was singing to. lol that doesn’t count but if it did! if I ever cheated this would be on repeat. I hope I’m never listening from this perspective. The visual is stunning tho

9. Sucka for love(not sucker for love) *****

This is a BOP. Long distance relationship that gives hope. He’s flying out his muse in the song and well… no matter the distance he’s in love.

1. Quickly*****

This song ended up on John Legend’s album featuring Brandy. Its all about loving and appreciating what you have in the moment. I think its a sentiment we all feel. JUST do it is the motto here.

2.Read The Stars ** 

The message is cool. but the song is to pop for me. In this song he is proving the non believers wrong and if at anytime you feel like you are the people who critique you… you will feel this.

3. Scared of Beautiful*****

I love this version better than the final brandy version. I love Brandy but he felt this. I feel this. Makes you never want to give up on yourself or doubt yourself. We are all beautiful in our own way and have something different to offer, I listen to this on my bad days.

4. Together*****

This is an anthem. Maybe someday people will use it as such but until then I will. Maybe it was his coming out story or maybe it was just a story regardless its a reminder no matter what we have to co exist together.

So these are really my standout tracks. There are more but these get replayed over time for me. I hope you guys listen with open ears and hearts. This is a voice of a generation and there are many more to come.

A long long time ago, there lived an adorable noble lady. Her beauty and charm was renowned not just in her own country but in the neighbouring countries as well.

The King fell for her on first sight and had her brought back to his castle, and this love resulted in the girl bearing their child.

However, the King was already married to another for political reasons. The Queen who sought the King’s love hated the noble lady and had her expelled from the castle.

From then on, the noble lady raised the child on her own despite her being of noble heritage, most likely out of her love for the King.

The child was named Areido. The great hero whom was loved by God, defeated the Maou to save the world and united the lands torn apart by various warlords.

The story of Areido who received God’s oracle and awakened as a hero is not what this story is about however.

This is the story of the Holy Mother who raised the hero on her own, the story of Rifirudeidoa Kiaru Madeireido.

There exists incomprehensible things in reality. I had merely gone to bed to sleep away the flu, yet for some reason I had ended up as a baby before I noticed.

Well... I suppose this is what is known as reincarnation. At least I hope so, I would be troubled if I was actually possessing this body instead.

In any case, this body is already close to 30 years old. I even have a kid, a boy who is almost 18 years of age.

He has soft and silky blond hair, thin and long eyebrows and his eyes are slightly drooping which gives off the air of kindness.

In short, he is completely different from how I was like in my past life, an ikemen. Furthermore, he has good character and is known in the neighbourhood as a perfect man. As such he is neighbourhood housewives’ idol, idol you hear?

Compared to my past self… yeah a male who was about to become a wizard after living for 29 years because I did not have a girlfriend. To make matters worse, I did not even have friends or family who got worried when I got sick.

With her ears cupped and her head slightly shaking while saying that, even I as her son found her actions cute. How should I say this….she feels more like a little sister instead.

That’s right, my mother is extremely young. She was about 12~13 years old when she gave birth to me. Furthermore, she doesn’t age.

….It was my fault. After having given birth to me, she somehow stopped aging.

God. The existence that sends heroes to defeat the Maou and brings light back to the world. As a reward for having given birth to me, a hero candidate, it seems her time was stopped.

As a result, my mother looks like a young girl…

Since she has always looked younger than her age suggests, even before giving birth to me, she told me that she was not bothered by it, but how can that be true?

I really hate them. God aside, The King of the Kingdom of Heroes, Makugaia is really detestable.

Heroes can only be born from those with the lineage of heroes. From the bloodline of the first hero Makugaia who founded the Kingdom of Makugaia.

Thus, heroes are supposed to appear within the royalty of this kingdom to battle the Maou.

However, I was born in a self-governed city state and found by the mikos (TL note: shrine maidens) of the Holy Kingdom who received God’s oracle, thereby officially becoming a Hero.

Impossible. There’s no way it can happen, a hero not of the lineage of the First Hero.

My existence caused the world to descend into confusion, but those who investigated my mother’s background somehow came to terms with it.

Ria, my mother who raised me on her own, her true name is Rifirudeidoa Kiaru Madeireido. Hero Kingdom Makugaia’s noblility, she is the second daughter of Viscount Madeireido.

At her 11th birthday party, the King fell in love with her at first sight and abducted her, confining her to a room in his castle and got her pregnant.

However, her pregnancy released her from her confinement and she got evicted from the King’s castle.

Even when she returned to her parents, she was handed some money and turned away with the reason of her being likely to cause trouble for them. In this manner, with her in the midst of pregnancy, she left the country and arrived at the self-governed city state.

It must have been extremely tough, not only was she a sheltered noble who knew nothing about the real world, she was also in her early teens. She had to struggle through this cold and unforgiving world while carrying a child. It would have been natural and understandable for her to hate this world, or even hate me as well.

But, she showered me with love and care.

…Once I turn 18 I will have to leave on a journey to defeat the Maou. This is something that has already been set in stone, a fate I cannot escape from. I as well do want to set out on the journey, to show the Makugaia who cast away my mother.

Above all, with my mother being this adorable, if I leave things alone, the Maou or something will definitely take her away.

That’s why I have to defeat him before it can happen!

That’s right! Shitty Maou, I will defeat you!

And while I’m at it, I will also destroy Makugaia that burdened my mother with this fate!!!

Somehow he suddenly has such a scary look on his face? When an ikemen puts on a scary expression, it is really imposing. In any case, I wonder what this child is thinking of, probably some weird delusions again?

His chuunibyou (TL note: the condition whereby one thinks he/she has special powers) is really incurable…I’m slightly worried about his future. That said, since he is actually a hero, maybe it isn’t considered chuunibyou?

…..oh well.

Come tomorrow, he will be 18. Back in Japan he would still be treated as a kid, but in this world he will be seen as an adult. In other words, he comes of age tomorrow.

He should live as he likes, whether he sets out to defeat the Maou or even run away from his fate, he should do as he pleases.

Unlike how I was, getting abducted and confined by the King, then getting raped daily. It was really intense, I couldn’t even imagine being freed. It was the upper echelons of the country after all, staying alive was all I could manage, really.

Had I returned home, my bald and fat father I didn’t particularly like will likely only congratulate me for becoming a bride.

To be frank, as a former male, I wish I could be spared from that. Moreover, as an adult male, putting aside how “splendid” I was, I had memories of my life up till when I reincarnated. For me to become a admirable noble lady is seriously impossible.

I was slightly in despair upon finding out I was pregnant, but this child was truly a stroke of luck for me. Thanks to him, I was expelled from the castle! Truly a blessing ☆ (TL note: the author really did put that star there. すんごく幸せです☆ )

As for becoming an eternal lolita, well…yeah.

While I have once entertained the thought that “it would be nice if I didn’t age”, I didn’t really expect God to actually grant it.

Seriously, spare me from that. Stop screwing around!

Thanks to that, I had a hell of a time while searching for a job…

Surely with these 2, the world will be at peace once again.

The historians of future generations later uncovered the diaries of these 2 famous existences from their graves. However, upon reading the contents which destroyed their image and made the faces of the historians cramp, they then convinced themselves that the diary was a prank to console themselves.

It took me a while to compile these. Maybe I was busy, maybe I didn’t want the closure.  I’m not always so great with closure. I think it was more that i tried and failed to post this several times and it was starting to become too much work. Anyway, I’ve finished the series. This story has consumed me for the last two years. Hey, I’m not a fast reader ok - don’t you judge me. But it’s a nice thing to have something in your life like that for so long, what’s the rush. I’ve compiled a bunch of my fav moments from the book below along with some commentary on some of them. Where to begin... I read this series because of two people. Either in high school or early college my friend Matt insisted that I start reading the Gunslinger series. He was obsessed with it. I was not a king fan at the time and chalked his interest Up to the other weirdo fantasy books he would read about kings and queens and warriors and big bears and those fantasy books you would see in the bookstores with the girls with the big boobs and they are riding a wolf or something from other dimensions and such (you know the ones right?) Sometimes he’d plead with me anyway about how I was missing out. I ignored this but regardless, the seed was planted. As I was reading this, i realized how lucky i was to be able to just keep reading this series unencumbered by the wait for publication. I was never having to wait YEARS for the next book to come out, or wondering if it ever would come out. I kinda got the Netflix treatment on this, i could binge read. I had the sad realization that as obsessed as Matt was with the series, he only got through three. He died a few months before Wizard and Glass which i realize is a small tragedy in comparison to the whole "he died" part but its a tragedy nonetheless. I wish Matt could have been able to finish the series. That would have made him happy. He was a nice person and one of my best friends, I realize writing this, I miss him. The other person implicated here as getting me interested was my friend Amy. She'd been a big King fan since she was a kid. A little kid. A weird little kid according to her, reading fukin Pet Cemetery at age 11 and such. My own 11 year old would have to be committed to a mental institution if she read that book. Amy liked reading in general and I hadn't really been reading any books in a long time and I was embarrassed about that when it came to her so i tried to start reading a bit not to seem like a total degenerate. that kid had a way of making me do things that were good, things i should be doing - nice quality really. She had a way of picking out things for me that, well, I really liked. She was my taste-maker for a few years with stuff like this and I came to believe if she said i would like it, well it was a done deal because she was always right about what i'd like. That said, she was also a little self conscious sometimes about her interests. She'd go on a whole rant about something sorta esoteric and then suddenly become self aware and look embarrassed, say something like "yeah, your girl's a real weirdo, sorry" but I loved listening and learning about lots of stuff (great stuff) i just had been oblivious to. Roland and his friends were among Amy's favorite stories. So a few years later when we, well, didn't talk anymore, and I missed her... quite a lot, I started picking up some of the books she told me about. While Matt put the idea in my head to read these books, I know that the real reason i finally did was to have a tiny part of her around, a one way connection but a connection regardless (now who's the weirdo) And it was nice to be honest. I would have liked to have talked to her about these books, or just say Thankya for putting the idea in my head. 

It’s amazing to me how much the world changed for King from the first book to the last. Or since Matt left. Or since Amy left. Or shall I say, the world has moved on, if it do ya. That the first book was started before I was born and before the last, Harry Potter appeared in the world of Roland. This was an almost uncomprehendingly amazing story. I cant believe it came from one brain. its staggering to me really, truly staggering. Thank you Mr. King. August 1, 2018.
