In this update, I added the Cap input parameter, which is a Boolean value, that allows the user to cap the top level of the extruded geometry. The resulting output is the extruded 2D curves + the caps as separate objects.

Printed Terracotta Cooler
The low-tech cooler is a project I developed with the global design agency, Entreautre. We started with a simple principle inspired by traditional practices: a porous terracotta container filled with water.
Thanks to a ventilation system (WEEE), the airflow in contact with the wet surface allows water to evaporate in order to produce cold air.
To achieve an interesting effect, we sought to increase the wet wall surface in contact with ventilated air as much as possible. Ceramic 3D printing allowed us to test complex volumes such as differential growth. The natural process of differential growth was also a coherent aesthetic to produce a manifesto product in order to share the vision behind the process.
The process
I designed this structure with the software Grasshopper. It's a visual 3D programming language linked to Rhino 3D that allows the achievement of complex and parametric pieces that couldn't be done with traditional CAD programs.
I learned the software by myself to achieve the program in order to print the final shape. This shape came from all the different constraints I was confronted with:
The material: The lining thickness, the porosity.
The method of conception: Height, material volume contained in the printing pipe, printing time, clearance angle.
The metrics of minimal performances: Structure resistance, water volume, surface exchange between ceramic airflow and water.
I worked with Luc Dauphin, a mechanical engineer, and Bastien Pyon, Fablab's CEO, who guided me in dealing with those constraints.
The 3D printing machine is an exclusive machine designed by the Dutch artist, Olivier Van Herpt. The one that we used is the only one that exists outside his studio. It works like a traditional 3D plastic printer, where a piston extrudes the terra-cotta as a thin filament layer by layer.

This was fun lesson in Grasshopper, using image asset in grasshopper to make  extrude points to a surface through algorithm. was Originally going to use  Witcher medallion (which it still can be) but used for a D&D family crest based of Drizzt do’urden. then made some  piece rhino boolean it together.

exercise 5. part 1 - surface to solid
In this exercise, topographical data points were downloaded from the NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) database and translated into a digital surface. Then, this surface was put into a grasshopper definition which extruded the surface from a given plane in order to generate a solid. This solid was milled on the CNC router through a materially reductive method, in which an instruction set consisting of coordinates (generated through RhinoCAM) informed the mill’s path to cut away material from the solid block of 20″x 20″x 3″ laminated wood. This study prompts attentiveness toward the implications of relative scale throughout all stages of design and fabrication processes, both how scale functions as a generator of unknown variability and as design tool.
selection of topography - scale of earth v. scale of the product, earth’s surface is actually very flat relative to size of sphere on which it sits. This flatness reads even at the scale of a single latitude-longitude swatch of extracted data points (NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission). In order to combat this scale and define an area in the lat-long that had appropriately variable elevation, the area extracted for the surface had to be reduced to 1:100 of the original area.
adjustment of parameters of gh determined solid - once the data points had been translated into a surface using the first grasshopper (gh) definition, the baked surface that came as a result was input into the new “chunky surface” definition in order to generate the solid. At this point, various adjustments to parameters within the gh definition such as min/max count, aspect ratio, or even a surface rebuild (not within the gh definition, but rather command within rhino onto the surface) all yielded variable conditions of the base unit, or the smallest flat element within the larger topography. Object 1 has many large, rectangular units as a result of a long series of arbitrary aesthetic adjustments, which equates to lower fidelity to the variability within the original surface and a more abstracted reading. Object 2 was not subjected to any parameter changes, and therefore exhibited much smaller and more square elementary units that were able to accommodate the true topography more accurately.
translation render-to-mill - in this final step, the implications of tool capabilities and limitations were made very apparent. On object 1, the size of the milled object, though it looks much less complex and of lower variability than object 2, took much longer to mill (3 hours opposed to 30 min) due to the fact that it was 2.5x the length and width of object 2. This is of practical consideration when constructing multi-step and piece models in which material efficiency/cost and time/labor costs are of relevance. In fact, it was due to time/labor constraints that the decision was made to mill object 2 at the smaller size. This resulted in some movement of the block during the milling process, as the shear forces were strong enough to begin to dislodge the form from its constraints (small blocks visible in fig. 8). Additionally, for object 1, the angle of approach of the end mill was set to 45 degrees for the finishing portion of the job (versus 30 degrees for object 2). This angle, accompanied by the low relative depth of each unit to those surrounding compared to its surface area might have been the cause for some of the shearing forces that delaminated some of the object’s top layers (visible in fig. 9, large flat space in bottom right corner of object 1). On the other hand, the large elementary units paired well with the .5 inch end-mill, in that the corner moments, though still rounded in actuality, look very angular at the scale of the unit whole. In contrast, on object 2, due to the fact that the elementary unit was about .5″x.5″, the reading of this corner bevel resulted in a much more jagged and organic looking finish. The scalloping and sometimes fully circular moments on the final product inadvertently begin to allude to the mountainous nature from which this solid was derived, all due to a matter of relative scales.
The milled objects hold some connection to the following systems example in Deplazes: Shin Takasuga’s Railway Sleeper House. “The universal utilisation of one single type of construction element for the whole structure – walls, floors, columns, roof structure, the built-in furniture too” (106) of the house allows it to read as a sort of natural extension of the forested topography of Miyake island, on which it is situated. Further blurring lines between landscape and building, “in the Railway SleeperHouse we can identify a subtractive design principle: the rooms seem to have been hacked out of a closed, cruciform stack with a rigid outer shape”. Similarly, the raw materials rely on the subtractive quality of the milling process to reveal the varied 'stacked’ surface conditions. One might even begin to reimagine the above exercise objects to some human scale, as containing qualities among its ridges and folds, where ridges begin to read as semi-hollow surfaces and platforms with habitable internal structure.

How Did We Get Here? The History of BIM Service Providers in USA
Keywords: BIM services, BIM consulting companies, BIM service providers in USA, BIM consulting services.
The concept of BIM has existed since the 1970s. The first software tools developed for modelling buildings emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and included workstation products such as Chuck Eastman's Building Description System and GLIDE, RUCAPS, Sonata, Reflex and Gable 4D Series.
The two main methods of displaying and recording shape information that began to appear in the 1970s and 1980s were constructive solid geometry (CSG) and boundary representation (brep). The CSG system uses a series of primitive shapes that can be either solids or voids, so that the shapes can combine and intersect, subtract or combine to create the appearance of more complex shapes. This development is especially important in representing architecture as penetrations and subtractions are common procedures in design, (windows, and doors).
Database Building Design
Seeing buildings through the lens of the database contributed to the breakdown of architecture into its constituent components, necessitating a literal taxonomy of a buildings constituent parts. One of the first projects to successfully create a building database was the Building Description System (BDS) which was the first software to describe individual library elements which can be retrieved and added to a model. This program uses a graphical user interface, orthographic and perspective views and a sortable database that allows the user to retrieve information categorically by attributes including material type and supplier.
In the early 1980′s there were several systems developed in England that gained traction and were applied to constructed projects. These include GDS, EdCAAD, Cedar, RUCAPS, Sonata and Reflex. The RUCAPS software System developed by GMW Computers in 1986 was the first program to use the concept of temporal phasing of construction processes and was used to assist in the phased construction of Heathrow Airport’s Terminal three (Laiserin – History of BIM). The founding of the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE) at Stanford in 1988 by Paul Teicholz marks another landmark in the development of BIM as this created a wellspring of PhD students and industry collaborations to further the development of ‘four-dimensional’ building models with time attributes for construction. This marks an important point where two trends in the development of BIM technology would split and develop over the next two decades. On one side, the development of specialized tools for multiple disciplines to serve the construction industry and improve efficiency in construction. On the other side is the treatment of the BIM model as a prototype that could be tested and simulated against performance criteria.
A later but prominent example of a simulation tool that gave feedback and ‘suggested’ solutions based on a model is the Building Design Advisor, developed in 1993. This software utilizes an object model of a building and its context to perform simulations. The program includes basic optimization assistants to make decisions based on a range of criteria which are stored in sets called ‘Solutions’.
Virtual Building
While the developments were happening rapidly in the United States, the Soviet Block had two programming geniuses who would end up defining the BIM market as it is known today. ArchiCAD developed in 1982. Using similar technology as the Building Description System, the software Radar CH was released in 1984 for the Apple Lisa Operating System. This later became ArchiCAD, which makes ArchiCAD the first BIM software that was made available on a personal computer.
ArchiCAD has made substantial gains in user base from 2007-2011, mainly as a tool for developing residential and small commercial projects in Europe. Recent improvements have made ArchiCAD a major player in the market though fundamental issues such as a lack of a phasing component and a complicated (but flexible) programming environment for its family components using GDL (Geometric Description Language) To date, Graphisoft claims that more than 1,000,000 projects worldwide have been designed using ArchiCAD.
Not long after Graphisoft began to sell the first seats of Radar CH, Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) was founded in 1985 and released the first version of Pro/ENGINEER in 1988. This is a mechanical CAD program that is utilizes a constraint based parametric modeling engine.
By 2000 the company had developed a program called ‘Revit’, a made up word that is meant to imply revision and speed, which was written in C++ and utilized a parametric change engine, made possible through object oriented programming. In 2002, Autodesk purchased the company and began to heavily promote the software in competition with its own object-based software ‘Architectural Desktop’.
Revit revolutionized the world of Building Information Modeling by creating a platform that utilized a visual programming environment for creating parametric families and allowing for a time attribute to be added to a component to allow a ‘fourth-dimension’ of time to be associated with the building model. This enables contractors to generate construction schedules based on the BIM models and simulate the construction process.
Towards a Collaborative Architecture
There has been a trend towards the compositing of architectural files with those of engineers who create the systems to support them which has become more prevalent within the past seven years as Autodesk has released versions of Revit specifically for Structural and Mechanical engineers. This feature released in Revit 6 in 2004, enables large teams of architects and engineers to work on one integrated model, a form of collaborative software. There are now several firms working towards visualization of BIM models in the field using augmented reality.
To combat any inefficiency the International Foundation Class (IFC) file format was developed in 1995 and has continued to adapt to allow the exchange of data from one BIM program to another. This effort has been augmented by the development of viewing software such as Navisworks which is solely designed to coordinate across varying file formats.
Following in the footsteps of the Building Design Advisor, simulation programs such as Ecotect, Energy Plus, IES and Green Building Studio allow the BIM model to be imported directly and results to be gathered from simulations. Autodesk, through their growth and acquisition of a broad variety of software related to BIM have contributed to the expansion of what is possible from analysis of a model. In late November 2012, the development of format, an application that allows the conceptual beginnings of a BIM model to be started on a mobile device is a leap for the company.
Contemporary Practice and Design Academics
Some have taken a negative stance on BIM and parametric as they assume so much about the design process and limit any work produced to the user’s knowledge of the program. This can enable a novice designer who has learned how to perform basic commands to become an incredibly prolific producer while a highly educated and experienced architect can be crippled from inexperience with a programs interface or underlying concepts. This creates a potential for a generational break line that becomes harsher as a new technology gains market parity.
Some BIM platforms that have a small market share but have made big impacts on the world of design include Generative Components (GC), developed by Bentley Systems in 2003. The GC system is focused on parametric flexibility and sculpting geometry and supports NURBS surfaces. The interface hinges on a node-based scripting environment that is similar to Grasshopper to generate forms.
Parametricism can only exist via sophisticated parametric techniques. Finally, computationally advanced design techniques like scripting (in Mel-script or Rhino-script) and parametric modeling (with tools like GC or DP) are becoming a pervasive reality. Today it is impossible to compete within the contemporary avant-garde scene without mastering these techniques.”
Since these techniques have become increasingly complex there has become a component of architectural schools which is specified to train in specific software. The programmer takes an idea of what is commonsense and simulates a workflow using tools available to them to create an idealized goal. In the case of BIM tools, the building is represented as components including walls, roofs, floors, windows, columns, etc. These components have pre-defined rules or constraints which help them perform their respective tasks.
BIM platforms typically represent walls as objects with layers, these layers are defined in terms of the depth and height of a wall and are extruded along the length of a line. The program then has the ability to calculate the volume of material contained within the wall assembly and to create wall sections and details easily. This type of workflow is based on the existing building stock and common industry standards and therefore a project which is produced in a BIM platform which emphasizes these tools is likely to reinforce existing paradigms rather than develop new ones. Additionally, the programmers who worked on the early BIM platforms often did not have a background in architecture but employed hybrid architect/programmers who contributed to the development of the programs. One notable exception I have found to this is the work of Charles Eastman who received a Masters of Architecture from Berkeley before working on the Building Description System. The roots of the major BIM platforms that are in use today have been developed by programmers with the peripheral input of hybrid programmer/architects and a global user base who contributes to the development of the software via ‘wish lists’ or online forums where grievances can be aired about a product workflow. The grievances typically result in new features and build upon the existing interface.
Though the general concept and technology behind BIM services is approaching its thirtieth anniversary, the industry has only begun to realize the potential benefits of Building Information Models. As we reach a point where a majority of buildings are being crafted digitally, an existing building marketplace where building materials and structural components can be bought and sold locally will emerge.

Project 2, Stage 2 Surface Detail Problems
Of course since all of the previous stages of making my master model were problematic this stage had to be too.
Tumblr media
As a test piece I set up a Voronoi pattern to project onto the top surface of the orthotic.
Typically this is done by creating a flat pattern and using surface morph to project this onto the surface however this wasn’t working and I couldn’t find any solutions that would get it to work.
I found another strategy to achieve similar results using the map to surface tool.
Tumblr media
After a lot of messing around to get it to work it did project the pattern down to the surface, however it was always over-sized. I tried various solutions and data culling strategies to try to fix this to no avail.
I didn’t just want to project the flat pattern straight down onto the surface because I was worried at how this would deal with the near vertical side and back walls of the orthotic, but after no other solution worked I had to just go with projection.
Tumblr media
It gave a surprisingly good result even though it was the bottom of the pile of considered solutions.
Tumblr media
I could then use a trick to extrude these projected shapes so they could be used for cutting ventilation and patterns into the surface of the orthotic. This would simply be done by booleaning the resulting forms. However both Grasshopper and Rhino would fail r crash when trying to boolean these shapes. I then tried exporting these shapes and using Meshmixer and Netfabb to do this (Netfabb has incredibly powerful boolean tools and will often manage operations that other software can’t) however both failed since the mesh that was being produced in Rhino’s export came out broken.
So I had to rethink what was possible to do for this project since I was now out of options and out of time. I decided to simplify the user customisation to just using curve and point attractors to make surface patterns.

Exercise 5.1 - Milling a Mesh Surface
Design in Rhino
8) Number sliders can be added to the variables Max Angle, Min Edge, and Max Edge to create different results on the surface. The other
9) The height of the extruded thing is a subtraction because subtraction makes one side flat. Otherwise, with an addition, it would be extruded in both directions. The number slider should be a floating point number rather than an integer.
10) The surface does not have to be lofted, we also created different surfaces with the command Sweep 2. However, there are some constraints: The surface must be able to be turned into a mesh and it cannot have any undercuts. A Euclidian object could be used to create a surface here. However, the surface should not lie flat in the xy-plane, but have height differences in z-direction for the project to make sense.
Manipulating ‘Virtual DNA’ // Human Intervention in Design Processes
“Like traditional drawing, digital production is a generative medium that comes with its own host of restraints and possibilities. Digital practices have the potential to narrow the gap between representation and building, affording a hypothetically seamless connection between design and making. As with any design process, however, there are invariably gaps among the modes of making. and, as with all tools of production, the very techniques that open these investigations have their own set of constraints and gear particular ways of working. Innovation is born out of this fissure and advances design.” - Lisa Iwamoto
While experimenting with the Grasshopper file, we found we were most interested in manipulating the maximum edge and the minimum edge of the meshed surface.
In our design process, we were inspired by the quote above and interested in testing and pushing the limitations of the meshed surface, technological constraints of the mill, and materiality. We wanted to exploit the gap both between and within design and fabrication processes, and recognize the possibilities and limitations embedded in each step. This impulse was catalysed by a desire to manipulate what DeLanda calls the “virtual DNA”, and experimenting with the “population” variable he describes: “adding points at which spontaneous mutations may occur” to the “sequence of operations”. The experiment reflects the ability of computation to mimic “mutant instructions to propagate and interact collectively over many generations”. This was done by altering what we established as “extensive quantities” (maximum edge and minimum edge).
We initially created surfaces by lofting from 3 or 4 closed curves, or by using the command Sweep 2, but most of these proved to be too complex for the fabrication process. Therefore, we created and meshed our final surface by lofting just 2 curves. We duplicated this surface, and then manipulated the maximum and minimum edge of both the volumes, producing visually different volumes that are both born out of the same profile curves and meshed surface. Our final product combines these two: One half of the volume is more complex, while the other half is a simpler rendition of the same initial surface.
complex side: min edge: 0.958 max edge: 8.989
simple side: min edge: 5.762 max edge: 8.882

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard
Tumblr media
We don’t know what’s going on here. If these tremendous events are random combinations of matter run amok, the yield of millions of monkeys at millions of typewriters, then what is it in us, hammered out of those same typewriters, that they ignite? We don’t know. Our life is a faint tracing on the surface of mystery, like the idle, curved tunnels of leaf miners on the face of a leaf. We must somehow take a wider view, look at the whole landscape, really see it, and describe what’s going on here. Then we can at least wail the right question into the swaddling band of darkness, or, if it comes to that, choir the proper praise. (Heaven and Earth in Jest, p. 10)
***
I am an explorer, then, and I am also a stalker, or the instrument of the hunt itself. Certain Indians used to carve long grooves along the wooden shafts of their arrows. They called the grooves “lightning marks,” because they resembled the curved fissure lightning slices down the trunks of trees. The function of lightning marks is this: if the arrow fails to kill the game, blood from a deep wound will channel along the lightning mark, streak down the arrow shaft, and spatter to the ground, laying a trail dripped on broad-leaves, on stones, that the barefoot and trembling archer can follow into whatever deep or rare wilderness it leads. I am the arrow shaft, carved along my length by unexpected lights and gashes from the very sky, and this book is the straying trail of blood. (Heaven and Earth in Jest, p. 14)
***
When her doctor took her bandages off and led her into the garden, the girl who was no longer blind saw “the tree with the lights in it.” It was for this tree I searched through the peach orchards of summer, in the forests of fall and down winter and spring for years. Then one day I was walking along Tinker Creek thinking of nothing at all and I saw the tree with the lights in it. I saw the backyard cedar where the mourning doves roost charged and transfigured, each cell buzzing with flame. I stood on the grass with the lights in it, grass that was wholly fire, utterly focused and utterly dreamed. It was less like seeing than like being for the first time seen, knocked breathless by a powerful glance. The flood of fire abated, but I’m still spending the power. Gradually the lights went out in the cedar, the colors died, the cells unflamed and disappeared. I was still ringing. I had been my whole life a bell, and never knew it until at that moment I was lifted and struck. I have since only very rarely seen the tree with the lights in it. The vision comes and goes, mostly goes, but I live for it, for the moment when the mountains open and a new light roars in spate through the crack, and the mountains slam. (Seeing, p. 35)
***
This is the sort of stuff I read all winter. The books I read are like the stone men built by the Eskimos of the great desolate tundras west of Hudson’s Bay. They still build them today, according to Farley Mowat. An Eskimo traveling alone in flat barrens will heap round stones to the height of a man, travel till he can no longer see the beacon, and build another. So I travel mute among these books, these eyeless men and women that people the empty plain. I wake up thinking: What am I reading? What will I read next? I’m terrified that I’ll run out, that I will read through all I want to, and be forced to learn wildflowers at last, to keep awake. (Winter, p. 44)
***
When I was in elementary school, one of the teachers brought in a mantis egg case in a Mason jar. I watched the newly hatched mantises emerge and shed their skins; they were spidery and translucent, all over joints. They trailed from the egg case to the base of the Mason jar in a living bridge that looked like Arabic calligraphy, some baffling text from the Koran inscribed down the air by a fine hand. Over a period of several hours, during which time the teacher never summoned the nerve or the sense to release them, they ate each other until only two were left. Tiny legs were still kicking from the mouths of both. The two survivors grappled and sawed in the Mason jar; finally both died of injuries. I felt as though I myself should swallow the corpses, shutting my eyes and washing them down like jagged pills, so all that life wouldn’t be lost. (The Fixed, p. 56)
***
Nature is, above all, profligate. Don’t believe them when they tell you how economical and thrifty nature is, whose leaves return to the soil. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to leave them on the tree in the first place? This deciduous business alone is a radical scheme, the brainchild of a deranged manic-depressive with limitless capital. Extravagance! Nature will try anything once. This is what the sign of the insects says. No form is too gruesome, no behavior too grotesque. If you’re dealing with organic compounds, then let them combine. If it works, if it quickens, set it clacking in the grass; there’s always room for one more; you ain’t so handsome yourself. This is a spendthrift economy; though nothing is lost, all is spent. (The Fixed, p. 66)
***
This is it, I think, this is it, right now, the present, this empty gas station, here, this western wind, this tang of coffee on the tongue, and I am patting the puppy, I am watching the mountain. And the second I verbalize this awareness in my brain, I cease to see the mountain or feel the puppy. I am opaque, so much black asphalt. But at the same second, the second I know I’ve lost it, I also realize that the puppy is still squirming on his back under my hand. Nothing has changed for him. He draws his legs down to stretch the skin taut so he feels every fingertip’s stroke along his furred and arching side, his flank, his flung-back throat. I sip my coffee. I look at the mountain, which is still doing its tricks, as you look at a still-beautiful face belonging to a person who was once your lover in another country years ago: with fond nostalgia, and recognition, but no real feeling save a secret astonishment that you are now strangers. Thanks. For the memories. It is ironic that the one thing that all religions recognize as separating us from our creator—our very self-consciousness—is also the one thing that divides us from our fellow creatures. It was a bitter birthday present from evolution, cutting us off at both ends. I get in the car and drive home. (The Present, p. 80)
***
My mind branches and shoots like a tree. (The Present, p. 90)
***
If you analyze a molecule of chlorophyll itself, what you get is one hundred thirty-six atoms of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen arranged in an exact and complex relationship around a central ring. At the ring’s center is a single atom of magnesium. Now: If you remove the atom of magnesium and in its exact place put an atom of iron, you get a molecule of hemoglobin. The iron atom combines with all the other atoms to make red blood. . . . (Intricacy, p. 127)
***
What if God has the same affectionate disregard for us that we have for barnacles? I don’t know if each barnacle larva is of itself unique and special, or if we the people are essentially as interchangeable as bricks. My brain is full of numbers; they swell and would split my skull like a shell. I examine the trapezoids of skin covering the back of my hands like blown dust motes moistened to clay. I have hatched, too, with millions of my kind, into a milky way that spreads from an unknown shore. I have seen the mantis’s abdomen dribbling out eggs in wet bubbles like tapioca pudding glued to a thorn. I have seen a film of a termite queen as big as my face, dead white and featureless, glistening with slime, throbbing and pulsing out rivers of globular eggs. Termite workers, who looked like tiny longshoremen unloading the Queen Mary, licked each egg as fast as it was extruded to prevent mold. The whole world is an incubator for incalculable numbers of eggs, each one coded minutely and ready to burst. (Fecundity, p. 169)
***
I have to look at the landscape of the blue-green world again. Just think: in all the clean beautiful reaches of the solar system, our planet alone is a blot; our planet alone has death. I have to acknowledge that the sea is a cup of death and the land is a stained altar stone. We the living are survivors huddled on flotsam, living on jetsam. We are escapees. We wake in terror, eat in hunger, sleep with a mouthful of blood. (Fecundity, p. 177)
***
Either this world, my mother, is a monster, or I myself am a freak. (Fecundity, p. 179)
***
Is this what it’s like, I thought then, and think now: a little blood here, a chomp there, and still we live, trampling the grass? Must everything whole be nibbled? Here was a new light on the intricate texture of things in the world, the actual plot of the present moment in time after the fall: the way we the living are nibbled and nibbling—not held aloft on a cloud in the air but bumbling pitted and scarred and broken through a frayed and beautiful land. (The Horns of the Altar, p. 230)
***
I am a frayed and nibbled survivor in a fallen world, and I am getting along. I am aging and eaten and have done my share of eating too. I am not washed and beautiful, in control of a shining world in which everything fits, but instead am wandering awed about on a splintered wreck I’ve come to care for, whose gnawed trees breathe a delicate air, whose bloodied and scarred creatures are my dearest companions, and whose beauty beats and shines not in its imperfections but overwhelmingly in spite of them, under the wind-rent clouds, upstream and down. Simone Weil says simply, “Let us love the country of here below. It is real; it offers resistance to love.” (The Horns of the Altar, p. 245)
***
I stood at the window, the bay window on which one summer a waxen-looking grasshopper had breathed puff puff, and thought, I won’t see this year again, not again so innocent; and longing wrapped round my throat like a scarf. (The Waters of Separation, p. 265)

Extrude To Surface is a grasshopper component created by me. It will allow the user to extrude 2D shapes to a boundary surface, where the top part of the extrusion takes the form of the boundary's topology. The component has two additional features: 1-Taper 2-Offset Please watch the video to the end so that you'll understand all the component's features, and how to install it. The plugin is tested In Rhino 7 and 8 The compressed file also has a text file to explain how to install the plugin

The Best of Tutorial Tuesday: Create Mind-Blowing Designs With Parametric Modeling in Grasshopper
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be bringing you the best of our Tutorial Tuesday series, resurfacing the most popular and useful tips from past Tuesdays. Enjoy!
Why create just one design when you can create infinitely many? Instead of designing a ring in just one size, you could use parametric design to control the ring size or the surface pattern, effectively creating many designs within one. Parameters also enable you to create algorithmic, generative designs with amazing complexity.
A good entry point to parametric design is OpenSCAD; you can read more about it in our previous article Tutorial Tuesday 4: Using OpenSCAD to Design With Code. When you’re ready to step into more complex, even organic-looking parametric design, then it’s time to look at Grasshopper. Grasshopper is a plug-in that comes standard with the powerful 3D modeling software Rhino.
To give Grasshopper a try, you must first download a free trial of Rhino for Windows, or download the Work in Progress version of Rhino for Mac. Start up Rhino and type “grasshopper” into the Rhino command line; Grasshopper will open in a window that overlays your Rhino workspace. Creating designs in Grasshopper involves placing visual code elements and connecting them with input/output “wires.” The resulting forms can be modified with parametric sliders and then ultimately “baked” into Rhino when you find a desirable set of parameters.
It looks complicated, but it isn’t as hard as it seems; once you get the hang of it, it is easier than writing text-based code. Here’s what a typical Grasshopper design-in-progress might look like:
Grasshopper screenshot from Seth Moczydlowski
Getting Started with Grasshopper
For first steps, follow through the Grasshopper Getting Started videos by David Rutten. These videos will walk you through creating your first Grasshopper definition, working with sliders, and using the interface effectively.
Once you understand the basics of interacting with Grasshopper, move on to Mode Lab’s fantastic Grasshopper Primer. This primer is a printable online resource that can be used as the basis of a short but powerful first course on Grasshopper. This foundations course covers not only the basics but also more advanced key topics such as data trees, algorithms, and mesh geometry.
For more advanced tips, walthroughs, and examples, head back to the main Grasshopper site to check out their list of video tutorials:
And finally, you can order a printed reference for Grasshopper: Dave Bachman‘s excellent new book Grasshopper: Visual Scripting for Rhinoceros 3D. The first half of this book is a thorough introduction to Grasshopper, including very detailed breakdowns of Grasshopper scripts for key example designs. The second half is an extensive Component Reference, which is handy to flip through to get new ideas or a birds-eye view of available options.
A simple Grasshopper design
So what can you design with Grasshopper? Anything from simple forms to complex algorithmic designs. Let’s start with a very simple example, our own Witness Bracelet from the geekhaus shop:
This bracelet was designed by sketching out the Witness path shape on a flat plane, extruding around that sketch with a tube, then wrapping the resulting form around an elliptical cylinder whose dimensions are determined by parameters that represent wrist width and height. The Grasshopper code for those actions is the mysterious mess of wiring shown below:
Of course, we could have created this simple bracelet in a much simpler, nonparametric way, but using Grasshopper enables us to move sliders to control wrist size measurements, path definition, and other features. This means that the Grasshopper code can create millions of variations on our design, and we decided to print one of them.
Parametric Power
Designers who leverage the power of parametric design don’t create just one model at a time, they create whole families of models with adjustable parameters. For example, consider the stunning Clothoid.A Lamp by Alienology, one beautiful form chosen from a huge array of possible designs created with parametric lofted splines:
Using the same Grasshopper code and modifying certain parameters, Alienology also created this very different Clothoid.B Lamp:
As another example, consider the work done by Responsive Design Studio in Germany. Using Grasshopper, they created a parametric ring design that can be customized to finger size, width, pattern, and other preferences.
Have you been creating parametric designs with Grasshopper or other modeling software? Tell us about it in the comments for a chance to be featured in future Tutorial Tuesday posts.
Or, if you’ve got questions about Grasshopper, leave a comment so that someone in the Shapeways community can help you get started.

Use the seeings below when your definition ought to work on Titey. Keep in mind: These values are all in millimeters. The function of KUKA|prc is to creates the code which operates on the robotic controller. This code is written in the Kuka Robot Language (KRL). You should tell KUKA|prc what directory and also data name to make use of for its code output. As soon as you've done this, as you make adjustments in the UI, the output will be re-written as essential to keep the code approximately day with the Grasshopper interpretation setups. Some of the instances of very flexible metals are gold, copper, aluminium as well as silver. These metals could be framed right into various shapes without cracking. However there are few individuals that will state that modern technology has taken the skill out of sheet metal construction yet the opposite holds true. When applying innovation to the process, different kinds of skill collection are required. Actually, technology goes to the center of today's sheet metal construction industry - Going Here - . Silicon carbide media might be used, particularly for the lasts of completing. Prevent utilizing hard items such as blade blades and also specific abrasive/souring representatives as it is possible to introduce surface area scuffs and also scratches. Damaging is particularly visible on sink drainer locations. These are normally superficial and also can be eliminated with proprietary stainless-steel cleaners or, alternatively, with an automobile paint restorer, such as 'T-cut'.
