Kissing & Grasshoppers: A Tale of Disappointment

It's been quiet around our department the last couple of days. School has started and things have calmed down from summer reading, so there have been opportunities to work on those things that get pushed back: withdrawing damaged materials, going over standing order lists, shelf reading, etc. etc.

I was covering our public service point this afternoon and since it was quiet I was going over some lists. A semi-regular patron walked up to the desk and placed (none too gently, mind you) a book on top of the papers I was looking at. The exchange went as follows:

Disappointed Patron: "Of all the books in this room, this is the one you have on display? I'm very disappointed. Of all the books..."

Disappointed Librarian: "I'm sorry you feel that way. It's a popular title."

DP: "Mutter...mutter...Of all the books... Boys...mutter...Kissing..." *wanders off to place title face down on a shelf*

DL: *Politest Smile that could be managed while avoiding head explosion*

The title in question: Two Boys Kissing  by David Levithan. You don't have to like it. Or read it. But don't tell me or anyone else (outside of your own family, though that isn't cool either) what or what not to read. Not your call, Disappointed patron. Not your call.

Of course, I had to chuckle when her kiddo came over to place a title on hold. In his hands? Grasshopper Jungle.
