Black stretch velvet wrap dress

I’m so excited to share my latest creation!  I’m so pleased with this black velvet dress, made using the GBSB Wrap Dress pattern.  The velvet fabric is luxurious, and the knee-length silhouette is flattering and versatile. The beaded embellishment on the shoulder adds a touch of glamour - I can’t wait for more opportunities to wear it out on the town!

Beads and satin binding from my stash.

Sewn with my trusty Janome overlocker and finished with my Janome coverstitch.

Notes on sewing: 

I only had 2m of this fabric, bought for a different project I abandoned.  I was really careful with my cutting out!  In an ideal world, I’d have added some length to the pattern for the waist ties, but this wasn’t possible with the fabric available.

In my haste to make the dress and get all the pattern pieces laid out, I messed up and accidentally laid the pattern out “upside down” so that the velvet nap strokes “up” instead of “down”.  Aside from the tactile element for the wearer, not a disaster - but it does mean that it collects more fluff!

Next time I make this dress, I won’t bother with the binding - it’s far to stiff and alters the shaping of the dress around the neckline.  Instead I’ll add an inch to the pattern around the collar and front, and finish the edges with a 1/2” hem.

The binding was a real faff to apply, and I didn’t like the finish.  In an attempt to press and shape the binding around the neckline, I had a complete disaster.  I pressed with a cool iron, through a towel - but the iron burped steam and damaged the velvet pile right in the front of the dress.  It looked like a permanent splash of liquid on the front.  In the end the only way to recover the situation was to deliberately and lightly steam-damage a wider area of the fabric, so that the single spot of damage was blended in.

I had already planned to decorate one shoulder with a beaded pattern, and this further distracts from the damage to the pile.

Definitely will make again, this time in a purple stretch velour.

304 likes hessewmatthew Before Sewing Bee I had never made a swimsuit. When we got the brief I made one to practice. Safe to say swimwear is not for me.

However, felt inspired to tackle a swimsuit that was suitable for any female, femme representing or anyone who wanted to wear a swimsuit. My aim was to design something that would cover anything that ANYBODY may want to cover. We have parts of us we don't want to expose. I chose the colours of the trans pride flag as this is a community that globally needs our support and love and going by Twitters response to my swimwear this is evident.

Was it my best creation? No, but it was filled with so much love, respect and compassion for a community under attack and the bodies of anybody who sometimes needs a bit more coverage to brave a swim. I'm proud of my idea, just wish could've executed it better.

Thank you again for all your support and love. Now go out and say something nice to someone that needs that smile today.

Total score!!!! Bag of random fabric from a work mate. You know what I mean when I say that, when you tell people you sew they either want to give you fabric or hem their trousers 😂😫. Sometimes you receive stuff you don't really want but you Smile and say thankyou anyway😉. Well, last night I received a big bag of unwanted fabric from someone at work who is having a clear out, and inside is some crap, obviously, but also some amazing wool and cashmere (about 2.5m) and some tana lawn type William Morris style (2m) fabric. Also some odds and ends of Laura Ashley curtain cut offs, and some red velvet!!!! “Lucifer In Love” notes 4: One of the first things that Riccardo Guido ever said to me was, “I hate plastic.” You likely know Riccardo for his stunning fashion concoctions and his adorability on the Great @britishsewingbee ...I didn’t - sewing machines tend to break around me, so I try to stay clear out of respect for designers - but I soon found out that he’s an ecological fashion warrior who does Earth-friendly fashion things like turn old sofas abandoned street corners into a new line of sexy jackets. Before that, I’d come to know him as my fast friend, new @coreartshackney co-worker, and maker of some stunning documentary shorts with Palestinian refugee kids for the United Nations’ @unrwa ...It was the latter that compelled me to ask him if he’d come along to the “Lucifer In Love” music video shoot to record some behind-the-scenes footage. I also told him it would double as a romantic weekend get-away for him and Nicolas. And it was, if you enjoy seeing your sweetheart shivering from the cold, smacked down by roaring winds, and pelted in the face with hail stones the size of golf balls. In any event, during a break in the shoot, with Riccardo’s feet freezing and soaked by rain, he realized he could pull plastic shopping bags - which I’d shamefully acquired during a grocery run - over his feet to stop the wet weather from getting in. It did the trick. And that’s how you push an eco fashion warrior to the brink and get him to say, “Oh my God – I LOVE plastic!” The link for the “Lucifer” music video is in the bio.
