Happy new year and goodbye 2022, a year that held the winter Olympics, the world cup, and many other competitions for me to stress over and cheer about with my Tumblr mutuals. Greatest Hitz Sweet (BMG) (UK import released in 2022)

Whatever is going on in my mind is as befuddling to me as it might be to you. First I'm buying the likes of Sting, Bob Marley and the Crash Test Dummies none of which I like but I rationalize it by claiming that for a dollar, I'll give them a go. Then, I'm paying full price for the likes of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, a band I never appreciated at all. And now I'm buying the most outrageous thing of all: a triple disc set of the Sweet's hits. I may have liked Ballroom Blitz and Fox On The Run and Little Willy when they came out back in the day, but not enough to go out and buy the single of each song. And trust me, I bought a ton of 45s not just as a kid but as a teen, a young adult, a middle aged man and now an old man. I sometimes think I could give it all up and just buy 45s.

What prompted me to buy this? This. Someone on God's Jukebox posted Sweet (or The Sweet, whatever your preference might be) performing Teenage Rampage on a children's show in England known as Crackerjack. I'm not certain who on Earth okayed this, but I find it to be the funniest thing, singing such a song to little kids. And I now go to God's Jukebox to sit and watch this and marvel at it. I'd never even heard the song until three weeks ago! I'll grant you, maybe buying the 45 of Teenage Rampage might have made more sense, but sense is something record collectors lack. It's all sustainable even when it isn't! So now, suddenly I have three discs of Sweet to get through, 52 songs! (This seemed to be the less egregious, I almost plopped down $300 on a nine disc box set of Sweet before I realized that might just be a ridiculous act of aggression against what, I do not know.)

Above you can see the front and the back of the set. In case you can't read that massive hype sticker, here it is in close detail.

Below you will find two photos detailing the gatefold. This is a quad gatefold digipak. So, when you open it you see only two panels. Then when you lift those two panels, the entirety of the quad fold shows loud and proud.

The foursome you see above are evidently the original members, but don't take my word. I barely know anything about this band except they have such a complicated line-up they actually have their own wikipedia page just for the members of the band! The also is one of the funniest things I've encountered. At one point these cats hated one another so much that three of the four band members started their own version of Sweet. Andy's Sweet, Mick's Sweet, Brian's Sweet and they toured at the same time! (Today all the members of the band are dead except one dude, Andy. And you have to go check out his webpage for Sweet. Dear God, dudes like this sustaining Sweet while they are 75 years old is another thing that makes me laugh. But hey! I just paid full price for this so I'm helping Andy put food on his table and beer in his ever expanding belly. I know. I'm a terrible human being.)

Let's take a look at the booklet. Below is the front of the booklet. It's the album cover without the hype sticker. These dudes are such glam rock poseurs.

The last two pages have a headline that makes me laugh so hard. Yeah, right. They were so much better than the New York Dolls... (although, I never considered the Dolls "metal" so what the hell do I know?)

Could you elaborate on oathbreaker lapin? Because in the case of his warlock pact, I've always assumed those were different from paladin oaths/cleric devotion in that paladins/clerics could just stop worshipping their god if they wanted to swap classes, while pacts like Lapin's seemed to have some sort of magic compelling them to obey their patron. So I don't know if canon Lapin could get away from the sugarplum fairy without fulfilling the three wishes and completing the pact, so I'm interested to hear your take 👀👀

absolutely um. i was mostly thinking abt a classswap (specifically@cloudmancy's kerapin classswap and/or roleswap between lapin and theo caus like. idk, to keradin, lapins heresy would look like he was an oathbreaker. and as a fag i just think oathbreakers and catholic adjecent fake religions are aesthetically quite neat. i was also considering osteomancy lapin because of @jadeandquartzesfic one with the shadows and because bone magic is objectively the funniest magic um. some shit just livses rent free in my head and that includes this stupid rabbit man from collegehumours dnd show. think im gonna study paleontology bc bones are funny wow i am on mr bones wild ride

but oatbreaker lapin. yes. as far as i know you are correct in that it is very specifically a paladin subclass. however unfortunately if gary geigax wants me to pay for the correct brain game then wotc should send him to fight me personally. in terms of like warlock lapin. yeah i definitely agree that lapin absolutely could not stop being an agent of the sugar plum fairy if he wanted to. so it like makes me think that with the fact that the sugar plum fairy ended up as an antagonist wasnt lapin kind of doomed either way? (causebattle sets are pre-set so there was gonna be a fight at the temple of the sugar plum fairy whether it was lapin o cumulous yknow). and is just like d20 a sciencepilled epic r/atheism show? andlike as a lifelog ateist idk i saw angels in my dreams the other day so idk if i vibe w redditors any more :/

Día 40: Portes - Melide

19,7 km; 294 Höhenmeter hoch, 406 runter

Als ich runterkomme, gierig nach Kaffee, sitzt eine nette Amerikanerin genüsslich schmatzend draußen im Garten. „Oh it’s delicious“ sagt sie, und zeigt auf ihren Teller und etwas, das aussieht wie Pfannkuchen. „It‘s grapes“ meint sie, und ich suche die Trauben, finde aber keine. „Oh is it? I thought it‘s pancake, I don‘t see the grapes“ meine ich, aber ich bin ja auch echt müde. Und in dem Moment geht mir auf, dass die Amerikanerin französisch gesprochen hat und „Crêpes“ meint… Wie gesagt, ich brauche erst mal einen Café solo, bevor mein Tag starten kann…

Die Kinder jedenfalls frühstücken 3 Portionen der französischen Delikatesse und wir je einen Riesen Tortilla de patatas. Rudi ist ohne Frühstück, aber nach 2 Café con leche schon los und im Morgennebel verschwunden.

Die erste Stunde ist wirklich mystisch, und wir versinken ebenfalls im wunderschönen Nebel.

Irgendwann kommt aber die Sonne heraus und wir machen in Palas del Rei unseren ersten Spielie-Stopp. Da kommt unser Köllner Freund Uli, und wir freuen uns alle, uns wiederzusehen. Er war einige Kilometer hinter uns, geht aber immer früh los, daher hat er uns eingeholt. Wir unterhalten uns im Schatten der Bäume etwas, und da wir aber noch Matildas Fingernägel schneiden müssen, dauert es bei uns wieder länger, und er zieht weiter. Auch wenn es vorgestern zum Brechen voll war: heute laufen wir fast den ganzen Tag alleine. Die Strecke ist auch eine der schönsten bisher, von einem Eukalyptus Wald zum nächsten, und kaum ein Pilger weit und breit. Es ist wirklich schön, und wir werden mit den sinkenden Kilometerzahlen auf den Wegweisern immer wehmütiger… In San Julian sehen wir schon von weitem eine schöne Bar mit Terrasse, und der Hunger treibt uns direkt hin. Es wundert mich überhaupt nicht, dass Rudi und Uli (die sich bis heute noch nicht kannten) schon dort sitzen und zusammen philosophieren. Es ist einfach herrlich!

Wir essen Hamburger und Bocadillos, und die beiden Herren, denen die Hitze mittlerweile zu schaffen macht, schlagen hier gleich Quartier auf. Da wir aber schon vorbuchen mussten, müssen wir die 10 km nach Melide noch gehen, aber wir freuen uns auch mal auf einen Abend alleine. Unsere Lieblingspilgerfreunde aus Frankreich von 2016, Irmi und Gerhard, haben uns geschrieben, dass wir unbedingt in Melide in die Pulperia müssen zum Krake essen, und das wollen wir natürlich auch. Es ist wirklich heiß, und bevor wir in Melide ankommen, müssen wir in einer Bar vor einer Brücke am Fluss noch einen Stopp machen. Die Kinder saßen seit dem Mittagessen im Wagen und wollen auch noch mal toben, also bietet sich der Halt hier noch mal an. Ein Pärchen begrüßt uns schon klatschend, und ich erkenne die beiden als ein Paar, das wir gestern ein paar mal getroffen haben und sie uns oft fotografiert und Daumen hoch gezeigt haben.

Sie begrüßen uns und ich erkenne sofort den südafrikanischen Akzent aus meiner Zeit in Namibia. Sie freuen sich sehr, dass ich ihren Ursprung gleich erkannt habe, denn sie werden immer für Engländer gehalten. Auch wenn mich ihr Fotografieren gestern ziemlich genervt hat, erkenne ich heute, dass die beiden so nett sind. Sie haben 3 Kinder (zwischen 26 und 16) und meinen, sie wünschten, sie hätten damals etwas vergleichbares mit ihnen gemacht, was wir hier machen. Sie haben eine Farm bei Capetown und erzählen viel über ihr Leben dort und den Wein-Schwarzmarkt während Corona („My friend is a winemaker and makes terrible wine, but in Corona he made a fortune because he had a black market”). Über Robert sagt Anton, ihn den Thule den Berg hochschieben zu sehen „was the greatest athletic effort I have ever seen in my life”, und ich sehe förmlich, wie Roberts Kraft wieder aufgeladen wird.

Wir trinken 2 Bier zusammen (die Kinder sind auch glücklich, denn am Nebentisch sind 2 Border Collies, die Hunde, die Matilda in Atapuerca so mochte) und gehen den letzten Kilometer zusammen in das Dorf. Natürlich fragt Anton gleich, ob er auch mal schieben darf, und beim ersten Anstieg hält er an, um Roberts Hand zu schütteln! Seine Frau Dom darf auch mal, aber sie geben bald auf. Wir verabreden uns für den Abend in der Pulperia und gehen in unsere Albergue. Dort werden wir schon von der italienischen Familie begrüßt - ich liebe den Camino! Heute sind also fast mehr Kinder als Erwachsene in der Albergue! Und die Berlinerin ist auch schon da und schnarcht ab 19 Uhr im Schlafsaal…

Da wir heute wieder sehr spät ankommen, ist es schon wieder zu spät zum Wäsche waschen und wir sind dann morgen alle bei der letzten Unterhose. Morgen müssen wir uns dann also wirklich mal beeilen!

In der Pulperia treffen wir noch ein amerikanisch-mexikanisches Paar, das wir gestern kennengelernt haben (er sieht aus wie Clint Eastwoods Bruder, und sie wie Selma Hayeks ältere Schwester), und wir haben wieder einen wunderschönen Abend.

Auch wenn wir eigentlich ins Bett sollten (ich zumindest), gehen wir danach noch auf einen Spielplatz, wo die Kinder bis zum Umfallen Karussell fahren und wir noch ein Glas Mencía trinken.

Was für ein schöner Tag! 3 Etappen noch bis Santiago… Jetzt ist es langsam schwierig, nicht sentimental zu werden…

Psycho Priest - “Hidden Gods” Subterranean Hitz, Volume 1 1996 Illbient / Trip Hop / Abstract

You gotta hand it to Skiz Fernando aka Spectre aka a bunch of other silly aliases. He’s pretty much the godfather of the illbient sound, an abstract, eerie, and subversive form of dubby trip hop that began in mid-90s Brooklyn. Although DJ Spooky is probably the most recognizable name in the genre, it’s Fernando who started the label that really gave the music a central home: WordSound. Throughout his career, Fernando’s earned comparisons to both the Wu-Tang Clan and Lee “Scratch” Perry by combining ploddingly sparse hip hop beats, dub effects, and creepy vocal samples, all of which end up yielding blood-curdling bad trip nightmare fuel.

Though it doesn’t seem to really be stated anywhere, one can’t help but think that the hip hop subgenre of horrorcore played a significant role in both the musical development of Fernando and illbient music in general. Horrorcore had been around since the early 90s, but it wasn’t until 1994 that the music really started to gain traction on a mainstream level. The Gravediggaz, which starred both The RZA (Wu-Tang’s leader and primary producer) and Prince Paul (originally from the group Stetsasonic and widely considered to be one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time), debuted with 6 Feet Deep, a stunning album that mixed haunting beats with exploitational and gratuitous horror-themed gangsta rap.

1994 also proved to be a pivotal time in Fernando’s own nascent career. Originally a music journalist, it was the year that he published a book on hip hop music and culture, and then in December received a loan of $1,000 from the reigning king of Brooklyn avant garde and abstract music, Bill Laswell. With that money, Fernando launched WordSound, and in 1996, the label released Prince Paul’s long-awaited solo debut album, Psychoanalysis: What Is It?

That same year, Fernando released a compilation of his own on WordSound called Subterranean Hitz, Volume 1, presented by one of his many monikers, The Ill Saint. It featured some of Fernando's  own works, as well as tracks from Prince Paul, Rob Swift of the legendary X-Ecutioners turntable crew, and other illbient-minded individuals. And one of the tracks on that comp, "Hidden Gods" by Psycho Priest, was produced by Fernando, too.

"Hidden Gods" is molasses-slow, totally stoned, off-kilter, anxiety-inducing, eerie trip hop music whose key seems to lie in its overall unpredictability. The pieces that accompany its underlying boom-bip drumbeat appear to have no consistency to them whatsoever. There's snippets of strings, horn toots, piano, and some chugging hi-hats you're more likely to hear in breakbeat, dnb, and jungle tracks, but the way they're all arranged on this song seems to be almost completely at random. It's a cool and interesting approach to making a song. Fernando already brings the scariness with how creepy all of these pieces sound by themselves, but he ups that scariness even more with how he ultimately decides to scatter them all.

Dieses düstere Szenario geht Hand in Hand mit einem weiteren Science-Fiction-Flair – einem Gerät, das es den Menschen ermöglicht, alte Erinnerungen wiederzuerlangen und lebendig zu erleben, und denen, die diese höllische Vision erleben, einen tröstlichen Blick auf bessere Zeiten bietet. Den Vorsitz über diesen Dienst hat Jackmans Nick Bannister, der von seinem Veteranen Watts ("Westworlds" Thandiwe Newton, das stärkste Attribut des Films) unterstützt wird, der die Chance hat, ihre Härte zu zeigen, bevor er vorbei ist. Doch als sie plötzlich verschwindet, macht er sich auf die Suche nach ihr, nutzt seine Technologie als Hilfestellung und stolpert in einen Kaninchenbau, der die zwielichtigere Seite einer Welt erforscht, die, wie Nick grimmig in der Erzählung feststellt, scheint dazu bestimmt, irgendwann unter den Wellen zu versinken. Es ist ganz einfach eine Menge zu verarbeiten, und Joy kämpft darum, ein Gefühl der Kohärenz zu bewahren, während die Handlung herumfliegt und Hinweise auf Korruption und Kriminalität verbreitet und wer Mae wirklich ist oder war. Ferguson beißt ihre Zähne in die Art von mysteriösen Frauen, die man mit Klassikern wie "Out of the Past" oder "The Maltese Falcon" verbindet, und Jackman wirft sich spielerisch in die verletzte Seele, die sie verfolgt; Dennoch lässt sich der Film letztendlich nicht vor seinen Ungleichmäßigkeiten oder den klobigeren Handlungspunkten retten, die entstehen, wenn Nicks gedächtnisunterstützte Detektivarbeit die verschiedenen Teile nach und nach zusammenfügt. Das Seltsame daran ist, dass sich die Prämisse tatsächlich voller Möglichkeiten anfühlt; in der Tat spielen bestimmte Aspekte des Films fast wie der Pilot für eine TV-Show – eine, die ehrlich gesagt mehr kommerzielle Attraktivität besitzen könnte – bevor sie sich wieder dem spezifischeren und alltäglicheren Mysterium zuwenden. „Zeit ist keine Einbahnstraße mehr“, erklärt Nick schon früh, was die Speichertechnologie zu bieten hat. Das Anschauen von "Reminiscence" wird jedoch wahrscheinlich viele der Zeit ein wenig zu bewusst machen und die besseren Erinnerungen, die damit gemacht werden könnten, etwas aus dem oben genannten Menü an Optionen zu sehen oder erneut anzusehen.
