Some rambles on the ending and the codependent nature of Constantin and De Sardet's relationships. Spoilers for the whole game under the cut.

When I played Greedfall for the first time, I couldn’t stop thinking about Constantin’s corruption arc. It didn’t really make sense to me. Why would he want absolute power over the island? He has plenty of power and probably lives quite a luxurious life already. He also says he finds politics boring if De Sardet asks him, so the desire to rule over the whole island full of people seemed to me very out of character.

I do understand that he went mad and everything, but my brain deemed it a boring explanation and kept searching for something more logical.

So here: I think his actions make more sense if they're driven not by greed but by jealousy, less hunger for power and more hunger for absolute love (either platonic or romantic).

Let me explain.

His family is all kinds of messed up. He thinks his father doesn’t care about him, and although we don’t know if he’s actually abusive, I can’t think of any good reason why Constantin would lie about this. His mother, if DLC is to be believed, is responsible for the death of his brother Laurent — Constantin being an heir is clearly more important to her than his wellbeing & mental health after the literal murder of his brother. We don’t know much about Laurent and Constantin’s relationship (although he doesn’t ever mention him & he says nobody cared for him but De Sardet, so maybe it wasn’t good? Maybe Laurent was better suited for politics? That would explain Prince d’Orsay’s disappointment. That’s just my theory though).

Anyway, what I’m saying is that a child needs unconditional love, and judging by this family and Constantin’s line “You've always been the only one to care for me. Our friendship is the only thing that matters to me”, he has only ever received love from De Sardet, which sounds like quite a fertile ground for unhealthy overly attached relationship.

Then the game starts, and the thing is… Well, they are not each other’s everything anymore. De Sardet goes to various cities & talks to every person imaginable & makes new friends, maybe even falls in love. Constantin meanwhile is chained to a palace, especially after his sickness is revealed. De Sardet's world grows beyond him, and he can’t follow them there.

So what do you do when the only person who matters to you grows apart from you? What do you do when you are driven mad with pain and may die alone, and they have to leave you?

Naturally, you find a way to bind them to you for all eternity, and in doing so alienate them from everyone but you. Constantin's smart enough to realize that if De Sardet's friends and allies fought against him, they would turn away if De Sardet joined him. But even if they wouldn't, they're mortal. Their death is inevitable. The only one who can keep De Sardet company for eternity is Constantin. Everyone but him will eventually leave.

That’s why “For you, for us”, that’s why “together, forever”. Not power over the island or some people, but power to keep the only person who loves him unconditionally close to him.

(Again, I acknowledge that this is extremely, extremely unhealthy. That’s exactly what makes their relationship so interesting.)

Anyway, as I said, it feels very in character for him to basically give up on humanity in favor of De Sardet. I can't look at him in the beginning or in the middle and say, “This character would do anything for power”. But I can look at him at any point of the game, any cutscene, and say, “This character would do anything for his loved one”.

Anyways I’m still thinking about the first scene where you find out Constantin has the Malichor. Just the deep sinking feeling I felt on my chest, knowing this story could only end in tragedy and yet wanting so badly to save him. God I love this game.

Finished Greedfall (Fem!De Sardet, Siora Romance, Anticolonialist Decisions, Kill Constantin) and all I can think about is this:

Petrus "The-Dad-Who-Stepped-Up" seeing De Sardet falling hard for a beautiful Doneigad (just like he fell for her mother all those years ago) and going "Oh Illuminated, no! She is as dumb as me!"

I actually ran most of the game with the "Found Family Squad" of De Sardet - Siora - Petrus. While supporting the native uprising for the entire time. It was great ❤️

I have a little plotline in my head where my boy Hezekiah De Sardet decides to join his cousin at the end because codependency issues, but then as time passes he starts to chafe at being bound to the island and being unable to leave, and Constantin feels his dear cousin’s discontent but has no idea how to rectify it, and because he’s lost his humanity every attempt he makes to soothe De Sardet just makes things worse. It escalates to De Sardet trying to secretly find ways to leave the island and be free to explore the world, which of course blows up in both of their faces when Constantin finds out and doesn’t react well, thinking his cousin wants to abandon him. That’s all I have rn, but god these two give me such feelings

finished greedfall, finally (got the good ending). honestly i feel like it could’ve had a lot more emotion than it did. it was sorta… eh to be honest. spoiler alert for greedfall, dragon age games, red dead games

like thinking about ending of arthur’s story in rdr2, ending of john’s story in rdr, which are sad, make you cry, etc as you empathise with these outlaws that have done bad things but are still good people and end up betrayed by those they trusted. the ending of dragon age origins can also be sad if your hero/warden dies to kill the archdemon.

then there’s the end of trespasser (which shouldn’t have been a dlc since it was the true ending of the game cough cough bioware) which was shocking when you first play it and a great setup for the next game (which i am looking forward to da:d), my mouth genuinely dropped open at the end of it.

dragon age 2’s ending is of course the final battle, it’s very dramatic, and there is the possibility of you having to kill some of the companions in the game. could it have been better? absolutely, but of course the entire story is presented in an interesting way and varric is an unreliable narrator so we may also never fully know everything that happened, which is what makes things so interesting. it’s the mage/templar conflict that was building up over the game and finally boiling over.

the last cutscene in greedfall with constantin could’ve had a lot more emotion. i almost cried during the actual cutscene of my de sardet saying goodbye to romanced vasco. i was slightly saddened by my de sardet killing constantin, though i was expecting to actually fight constantin and that didn’t happen (which would’ve made things more intense and so on), rather than fighting the guardian which the name i can’t remember. i was also expecting my de sardet to be a lot more outwardly emotional about stabbing her cousin in the gut, rather than what it really was (which was more of an internally shut down, sorry but not expressing it and being more stoic). i was expecting de sardet to be in anguish, which is how it happens in my brain.

they are my own expectations, it’s more that i do love the game, setting, and characters, but just wanted a little bit more imo.

I remember years ago reading criticism against Greedfall for glorifying colonialism because the protagonist is "literally a colonialist" and there are likeable and sympathetic characters from colonialist factions and... I'm currently playing it and damn, media literacy really is not a skill everyone possesses, because the game could not be more overt in it's criticism of colonialism, forced assimilation, missionary work and evangelism, eccessive land exploitation for profit...

I have just discovered, in the following order:

1. Greedfall (don’t come at me, I know I’m late to it, I’m a busy woman okay?)

2. CAPTAIN VASCO (my feet? Knocked off. My romance? Locked in.)

3. “It’s a ship. Not a boat.” “…Apologies.” (Tell me why female De Sardet says that with such sass but I headcanon male De Sardet being flushed embarrassed floundering in front of this perfect human specimen of a Naut.)

4. BISEXUAL Vasco

5. MALE DE SARDET CAN HAVE HIS HEART BROKEN BY CAPTAIN KURT ON DAY ONE (or so this one fanfic I read said but I pray that it is canon)

I feel a repressed sadboi mage De Sardet mesmerised by the free-spirited, sea-lead Vasco fanfic coming on and I will NOT apologise for it.

(Vasco is equally enchanted in return by the handsome, stammering noble with the exquisite blush and clumsy handling of weapons and such little regard for his own talents (and looks) and he hungers to draw the tempest he can sense confined beneath the trappings of nobility to the surface.)
