I had the honor to illustrate the cover of issue 24 and talk a bit about my career so far and my art process, specifically my paper crafting. You can find more about it here!
Such a dream to be featured alongside so many talented people in this industry that we love so much.
To my dear friends at 3D Total, Character Design Quarterly and @characterdesignreferences, thank you once again for having me!

BLACKSTAR
Oil on panel, Feb 2021
Lazarus and Major Tom surrounded by the black stars of an inverted Andromeda - the idea came to me in a spark of inspiration and my rough sketch was a crappy cartoon drawn in sharpie on a scrap peice of paper.
I then painted to this whilst listening to Autumn 2 by Max Ritcher - 2012 recomposition of Vivaldi on repeat.
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet is glowing

Every so often I come across western characters from old movies that could have been the inspiration of a mediaeval/goth themed manga. Bowie ❤️

Hey, party people. I was reading up on how to clean a slide scanner -- since like everything in the universe dust can get on the lens, mirror, and so forth to muck up good images -- and the directions for mirror removal scared me, so I just took the outer case off, rolled the mirror box toward the exposure frame so I could use canned air on it without taking anything apart, and reassembled the case.
Gave it a test run with this box of slides that's been sitting on my dresser for a few years but, uh, looks like I've never scanned because I'd remember this parade from 1959. Things seem a little better, but my test scan had all this crap on it...
...So I used the canned air on both sides of the slide, then gave it a wipe with a cloth, then a further wipe with a Q-Tip, and this bit of hair was still there somehow.
Pulled out a snazzy 30x jeweler's loupe that I got at a yardsale (the seller had a colorful story about the previous owner, who is currently in the county lockup For Reasons) to have a closer look and discovered... The dust and hair is not ON the slide, it is IN the image! One of two things happened: Either there was dust on the camera's lens (inside or outside) or the film itself when the picture was taken, or when this slide was produced from negative there was dust on the transfer equipment. Either way... sloppy.
Happily the ICE infrared dust removal tools in the scanner can make short work of such aberations.
A quick history reminder: The photo shows a rocket and some "astronauts" in a 1959 parade in California. The suits look a little goofy because Man didn't land on the moon until 1969, or put a human into orbit until 1961 (though Laika the dog went up in 1957), so a model of a space suit that could functionally go into space hadn't been created yet.

Note to self / Dear Eric
Part 1: Note to self
Do not throw yourself -
money, sex, or worst of all
your peace of mind
at a boy. It doesn’t matter
how right (or wrong)
he is for you. This
always backfires,
because this is
not love.
Love is letting him
be himself, while
letting go of you,
wishing him light
either way.
Part 2: Dear Eric
Fear not my falling. I
am aromantic. I highly
question my ability
to love, not obsess.
I am doing my best
to love you.
Love,
Melanie

Ground control to Major Tom...
You've really made the grade...
...And I'm floating in a most peculiar way.
