The (Real) Stardew Valley Farm Update
Okay, so I meant to post way more about this, but the past year involved a truly inhumane number of medical appointments including driving an hour away 2-3 times a week all summer, so . . . not a lot of time for gardening and not much energy for posting. Fingers crossed that this year goes better!
To refresh, I'm trying to grow everything from Stardew Valley in our yard, with substitutions as needed, preferably with Midwest USA native plants. 2021 and 2022 can be found here, with my original plans for what I was going to do for 2023 and 2024.
2021: Additions/Corrections
Starfruit - Native wood sorrel (thanks to @alienskyler1 for teaching me that they were related!)
Cave Carrot - Queen Ann’s Lace, AKA wild carrot (also plenty of cultivated carrots)
2023: What Actually Happened
Garlic - Native wild garlic
Blueberries
Wild Horseradish - Not wild, contained in a raised bed on concrete because I don't want it to get too wild (also a mint containment system!)
Hops - Teamaker hops which is good for tea. It struggled in the summer so maybe tea this year?
Winter Root - I went with hopniss, aka groundnuts, a native vine with tubers you dig up in winter
Fiddlehead Fern - Native hayscented fern
Poppy - Native wood poppy
The ferns and poppies were planted in the fall, so hopefully they come up well this spring!
2024: The Plan
Blue Jazz - Native Ozark Bluestar (one of my winter sowing seeds)
Apricot Tree - Native passionflower vine, known as wild apricot (winter sowing)
Sunflower - Winter sowing two native sunflowers, and will hopefully be growing some massive non-native ones as well
Summer Spangle - Native prairie lily (winter sowing)
Palm Tree/Coconut - Native palm sedge. I'll grow this from seed once it warms up
Pineapple - White strawberries (pineberries)

Oak Tree - Native dwarf chinquapin oak (it's been shockingly hard to get my hands on one)

I'm pretty low on spoons today after the monthly Medical Hell Day yesterday, but I really wanted some halfway decent food now that I'm in better shape to eat it again. Haven't been eating very well or enough for the past week or so again.
So, plan getting underway to turn out my own makeshift version of a vaguely West African-influenced peanut chicken stew to go with some rice. Haven't made any for years, and it seemed like a decent use for some ingredients we had on hand. Including some of the good chunk left in that kg jar of 100% peanut butter. (I also really need to do some baking with it before it starts going rancid.)
Tonight that is evidently going to include some thawed out frozen chicken breast (not my favorite but okay), frozen kale, and a really big carrot. Which I did have the sense to cut up in advance last night along with the onion, while I had more energy and was thinking about it.
Another of those things that's more of a method than a set recipe. It should be fine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ghana temporarily halts grain exports as lack of rain hits crops ACCRA, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Ghana on Monday temporarily banned the export of grains including maize, rice and soybean to ensure domestic supply as the West African nation grapples with near-drought conditions that have disrupted crop production, the agriculture ministry said on Monday. Rainfall in north Ghana has been erratic over the past two months and low compared to last year. The dry weather has hindered crop production in the world's second cocoa producer after Ivory Coast. Around 1.8 million hectares (4.45 million acres) of land are at risk, with farmers growing food on around half that area already impacted. Maize, rice, groundnut, soybean, sorghum, millet and yam are the worst hit. The affected regions account for around 62% of Ghana's annual grain supply, raising concern about a nationwide food shortage, the ministry said in a presentation. The export ban was implemented with immediate effect and will remain in place until the situation normalises. The ministry said it would plug the shortage with the grain reserves of West Africa's political and economic bloc ECOWAS, grain imports and private sector partnerships. It also listed a series of interventions to support vulnerable farmers. Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam said on X that the government plans to raise $500 million to fund its food security interventions. Africa is heating up at a faster rate than the rest of the planet and enduring more severe climate and weather disasters such as droughts, according to the United Nations and the African Union. Governments on the continent -- many of which, like Ghana, are struggling with debt -- are striving to secure a much bigger share of global climate financing this year to help deal with the increased threats from climate change.

3. Barley Khichdi for diabetes
Ingredients: 1 cup of barley grain, cumin seeds, chili powder, 3-4 tsp of coarsely ground groundnut powder, ½ tsp cooking oil, Black salt, Finely chopped coriander leaves etc.
How to make Barley Khichdi?
Soak a cup full of barley grain overnight and next morning and wash the grain thoroughly.
Put the grain in a container of a pressure cooker and add a little water (The water should be just on par with the grain or 1/4th 3. Anything extra could leave the khichadi soggy. Let ONLY 3 whistles blow.
Once the lid opens and the cooked barley cools down a bit, transfer it to a wider vessel. Add groundnut powder, chili powder, and salt, and mix thoroughly.
Add oil in Kadhai and allow it to heat up, then add cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
Now, add the barley, and mix it all for about 3 minutes. Sprinkle a few drops of water, and mix again.
Cover the wok with a lid to cook the grain on steam, and intermittently open the lid to mix the grain. Repeat this process thrice.
Once done, add the chopped coriander leaves and mix gently. 9.Once again cover the wok with the lid and after approximately 2 minutes, take it off the gas stove. (If you continue keeping the wok on the gas stove, the grains become hard and defeat the purpose of having soft khichadi.)
Now its ready to serve!

The silence was the worst for Anya. The birdsong and insect buzzing had filled her spirit with joy; it had gone since he came. Anya reminded herself it was no one's fault; the ancient scrolls foretold his coming. Every child knew of the dark one and his forces of evil. Mothers often reminded their children that if they were naughty, the dark one would come to take them away in the night.
The forest's stillness was too much. Anya prepared to head for the safety of home. That's when she heard them. The cries initially seemed unreal, like something from a nightmare, unseen and drifting closer with each breath. You throw your eyes open in the grip of fear; fear is gone, and you breathe deeply. Anya was very awake. She quickened her pace past the singing brook, then crossed the old stone bridge that stood longer than anyone could remember.
"We shall endure the same as the bridge," Ayna said, then hurried on. Gojeck was away, so she placed a kettle on the fire and added dry crispberry leaves to a large mug. Relaxed and warm, she sipped her tea and reflected on the day's events.
Remembering the distant sound filled with horrible pain was familiar as if she had known it long ago. Helping herself to a spiced biscuit, she tried to place the memory. The details remained clouded, which only increased her apprehension. It's best not to fret. She had dinner to prepare and laundry to fold. She closed her eyes briefly, and the image flashed before her.
Anya sat up and said, "The trees, I heard the trees scream." She stood, walked to the door, and listened. She heard nothing; flinging the door open, Anya marched onto the step and stood still, only the wind and nothing more. Maybe it was nothing anyway. The tuber stew awaited, and the groundnut pie needed baking before her husband came for high tea.

Malak sat in his chair near the small stream, playing his fiddle; the tune was slow and soulful. Anya stood at a distance and allowed him to finish the song; it was "bad form" to interrupt a musician during a performance.
"Was that a sad tune you were playing, Malak? Has the season passed for cheer already?" asked the matron.
Malak turned his head in her direction and, with almost no effort, began a lively jig that ended abruptly. "Now, what brings a feather duster like yourself out so early in the morning? I figured you would still be roosting in your box," chuckled the old man.
"If you must know, I came to ask you about the scrolls and what they say about those Waldvolker who resist prophecy and raise arms against The Dark One."
Silence met her request, and then Malak waved the matron over to his spot and pointed toward the stream. "See the ripples, see how they dance and fight against the current; going against it seems natural for some."
Anya studied the water and then asked her friend, "You're telling me the scrolls are not prophetic and that, like flowing water, they tend to seek the path of least resistance?"
The man stood, put his arm around his friend, and suggested they have butter cake and elder nut tea. "We can talk on the way, lass," Malak explained that the scrolls did not tell the future so much as to guide folks in seeing possibilities or finding one way to view an event.
"The writings never spoke of things as unchanging. Like the rain that trickles over a stone, sometimes it flows straight; other times, it shoots off in a completely different direction. The scrolls interpret life this way and nothing more."
Anya's brow furrowed, and she was about to ask a question. Malak added, "We have had peace for so long now that any thought of things changing has no grounds for being. Folks fear change. Instead of challenging the future, they merely accept the scrolls as unchangeable. That's not what the ancestors intended them for, Anya. Does that answer your query?"
She nodded and blew a shrill whistle, bringing several snowy white owls that encircled the two as they headed toward the building's entrance. After tea, Anya strolled home, thinking of her talk with Malak.
"There is still a chance, a path that leaves us and the forest safe. Tomorrow is another day to fix what is broken today," said the matron with a sense of hope she had not felt for a long time.

Cooking: Heat groundnut oil in a pan. Add sesame oil when hot and spluttering. Add curry leaves and let them crackle. Saute the onions till golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute. Add turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and fennel seed powder. Saute for another minute. Add chicken pieces and cook till browned. Cover the pan and simmer for 15–20 minutes, adding a little water if needed. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot.
2. Meen Kulambu (Tangy Fish Curry):
Ingredients: 1 kg Fish (cleaned and cut into pieces), 2 tbsp Groundnut Oil, 1 Tamarind (soaked in water), 1 Red Onion (chopped), 3 Tomatoes (chopped), 1 tsp Turmeric Powder, 1 tsp Red Chili Powder, 1 tsp Coriander Powder, Curry Leaves, Mustard Seeds, Salt to taste.
Cooking: Extract the tamarind pulp from the soaked tamarind and set aside. Heat groundnut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and saute for a few seconds. Add chopped onions and saute till golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste (optional) and cook for a minute. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Saute for another minute. Add chopped tomatoes and cook till mushy. Add tamarind pulp, salt to taste, and a little water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the fish pieces and cook gently till cooked through. Serve hot with steamed rice.
3. Elaneer Chicken Soup (Cool and Comforting):
Ingredients: 1 kg Chicken (cut into pieces), 2 tbsp Groundnut Oil, 1 Tender Coconut (water extracted), 1 Red Onion (chopped), 2 Green Chilies (slit), 1 tsp Ginger-Garlic Paste, 1 tsp Coriander Powder, 1/2 tsp Cumin Powder, Curry Leaves, Cilantro (for garnish).
Cooking: Heat groundnut oil in a pan. Add curry leaves and let them crackle. Saute the onions till golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute. Add coriander powder, cumin powder, and a pinch of turmeric powder. Saute for another minute. Add chicken pieces and cook till browned. Pour in the extracted coconut water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, cover the pan, and simmer for 20–25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot.

David Chang's roasted Summer corn with miso butter
Momofuku is a famous restaurant in NYC, which David Chang founded. One day I hope to eat there.
This dish was apparently such a hit there that at the time no one wanted to order anything else. It was a victim of its own success and got taken off the menu.
Fresh sweetcorn is still in season, so I thought I'd make this dish, with the colour of sunshine, as Autumn truly takes hold.
First up, I roasted an onion, peeled and cut into wedges. I made up the room temperature miso (2tbsp) and room temperature butter (2tbsp) into a mix at the same time (not pictured). The miso and butter were mixed together into a paste. I made 120ml of chicken stock.

I used fresh corn rather than frozen or tinned, in keeping with David Chang's recipe. Shearing the kernels off three whole corn cobs is a messy task, so you need plenty of space to work in to catch errant niblets. I sliced up 6 slices streaky bacon and 4 spring onions with both green and white parts into thin circle slices. The bacon was dried fried in a non stick pan.
Frying off the sweetcorn on a high heat in 1 tbsp of groundnut oil was the next step. No pictures, as I was stirring and moving the niblets constantly.
Then the roasted onion and cooked bacon went in.

Next was the miso and butter mix and the chicken stock.

After cooking for a few minutes, the "sauce" thickens and becomes less watery, more glossy and coats the onion, bacon and corn.

When there is no water hanging around at the bottom of the pan, it's time to serve up, with half of the spring onion mixed in...

The other half goes on top.
The miso butter is full of flavour. The creamy and indulgent umami flavours complement the sweetness of the last of the summer corn. The streaky bacon gives texture and meatiness. The spring onions give crunch and freshness. A fab summer or early autumn recipe.
I was asked on social media about what to substitute for the bacon for a vegetarian version of the dish. I suggested dried porcini and dried shiitake mushrooms, reconstituted and sliced would make a good substitute. Porcini for flavour and aroma, shiitake for texture.

We made far too much of the miso butter corn for one dinner, so we had some to spare.
We decided to use the rest in jacket potatoes.
