the Gryllacrididae (leaf-rolling or raspy crickets) are one of my favorite orthopteran families: large, cricket-like animals with spiny limbs that hint at their predatory nature, and the unique feature of silk glands with which they use to tie leaves into secure shelters.

I saw a few species in Costa Rica, though all are unidentified. many gryllacridids have a translucent, gem-like luster to their vibrant colors; there’s even several species in Colombia (I must see these someday) that are a vibrant fluorescent-paint pink!

Funky goldy orangey yellowy fellow found in w.Australia!! Was a big fan of my boots. Tried getting in my boot. I was not a big fan of that. The longest antennae I’ve ever seen in my gotdamn LIFE.
I’m thinking poooossibly gryllacrididae / raspy cricket??? Unsure. In the meantime I’m calling it marmalade <3
Lmaoooo couldn’t even fit those things in the photo. HUGE. I love this lil dude. I think I’d agree with raspy cricket? Looks close at any rate. I’m not super familiar with most of your bugs over there. But if you see Marmalade again...tell them they are perfect...

Currently unidentified, I found this small cricket inside a leafy cocoon. The cocoon had 3 sides, and seems to be stuck together by silk.
I have heard of leaf-rolling crickets in the Gryllacrididae family before, however I know very little about their behavior.

I thought you'd appreciate some photos of the beautiful Australian king cricket (not sure of exact species) I caught years ago
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her antennae were so long I literally couldn't get them fully in the frame!
Tumblr media
She was just a catch and release. I did not keep her. I'd found her tangled in a mat of abandoned cobwebs on the porch (where she'd most likely been prowling for spiders or cockroaches to hunt) and spent about an hour slowly, painstakingly removing it all. Managed to not damage her at all in the process (she was very tangled up) which I will always be proud of - especially those antennae!
These crickets were really common in the regional area of Perth, Western Australia. I miss seeing them around now I've moved interstate.
(Also I'm holding her like that because these guys can bite to draw blood, they're predatory and their jaws are like bolt cutters - so flat hands, slow movements)
beautiful animal & good on you for saving her! looks like a raspy cricket (Gryllacrididae) to me, king crickets (Anostosomatidae) are typically wingless. I love both but there’s something extra vicious about gryllacridids that I just adore. plus the silk-spinning!
Tumblr media
there’s only a single raspy cricket in the US, Camptonotus carolinensis, and while it is pretty small and plain compared to yours, still made me very happy to find for the first time last year. I might get a chance to see some tropical species this year, too!
I hope we can both run into more gryllacridids soon, wonderful bugs

@geitredan submitted: a friend with very long antennae found in [removed]! i've never been able to figure out what it is 😭
Very cute friend! Love their long antennae. They look like a raspy cricket in the family Gryllacrididae :) Interestingly, raspy crickets are able to produce silk, which is unique among Orthopterans! Depending on species, they can use it to secure curled leaves that they shelter in or to line burrows.
