As promised last month, I’m going to use this post to delve into my top 10 anime of 2022. It ended up being long and I can tell that I’m not going to be able to do much about that without really cutting more details out and I’ve already tried to make it shorter so I’m just going to put it under a cut instead. Before the list, here are some honorable mentions: Summer Time Rendering, Delicious Party Precure, and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Really, GWitch should be on the list but I’m still traumatised from the disappointment that was the second half of Ranking of Kings so I’m being cautious. It’ll probably end up on next year’s list if all goes well with the second half.
10. Raven of the Inner Palace - I watched this one shortly after it finished airing and was very impressed. The story was really interesting and engaging, the characters were charming and I loved watching them grow, and the lore was fascinating. The only major issue is that it does end of a somewhat incomplete note. It feels like it wraps up Shoxue’s character arc satisfyingly but it’s clear that there’s more story to come. I definitely would be interested in reading the novels but I’d struggle a bit with some of terminology in Japanese so if I did read it, it would be in English.
9. Shadow House 2nd Season - The first season just missed out on being one of my faves of 2021 so I was pleased that it got another chance so soon and it more than earned it’s place on my top 2022 list. The plot of season 2 was consistently engaging and I appreciated the focus on characters like Rosemary/Maryrose and Barbie/Barbara who I was interested in from the first season. I hope we get more but I know I’m going to be reading the manga when I can either way.
8. Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 - While I didn’t like the second season of Superstar quite as much as the first, I did still really enjoy my time with it. I was a bit iffy on the new characters at first but they did grow on me by the second half and I was able to enjoy it a lot better. I think the best part of this season is the introduction of Wein. She’s got such a cool character design and a lovely voice and her performances were so good. I was also incredibly fond of the episode about Ren’s gaming addiction. I was initially annoyed about the ending but now I just can’t wait to spend more time with these characters and see what’s in store for season 3.
7. Bocchi the Rock! - There were three things that stood out to me while watching this anime: the music, the visual gags, and the representation of anxiety. The music was great and the visual gags were hilarious and I really related to Bocchi. Aside from the relability, I also really liked that Bocchi was allowed to grow throughout the twelve episodes. Compared to something Komi Can’t Communicate, which I do like but it has flaws of course, where it’s been 2 seasons and Komi still can barely string together a sentence, it was nice to see Bocchi actually grow and be able to talk to others in ways that she couldn’t have imagined at the beginning. I really appreciated that. I think I will rewatch this one in the future as I wasn’t in the best of moods when I did watch it but I still enjoyed it and I really hope we get more.
6. Spy x Family - I don’t know that I have anything to say about this show that hasn’t already been said. It’s fun show and I enjoyed watching it every week, though there were a few dull moments. I enjoyed seeing the family grow and it’s such a good-looking show. I can’t wait for more.
5. Sasaki and Miyano - Sometimes a simple romcom is all you need. I’ve been a fan of the Sasaki and Miyano manga for years and I was so excited for the anime adaptation. While I was a bit wary of the adaptation choices at the start - like the awkward character designs and anatomy and the random cut-aways to cats doing stuff, it melted my heart by the end and became such a joy to watch. I loved seeing these two characters fall in love with each other week by week. It was just so sweet.
4. Lycoris Recoil - This anime was such a blast to watch each week and to look at all the new fanart of the characters and the ships. The animation was superb and I loved the characters and watching them and their relationships develop. I know a lot of people were disappointed that the story didn’t challenge it’s own flawed premise but I think it was satisfying as a story about Chisato and Takina and I appreciated it for that, though I do wish we had gotten more from characters like Fuki and Mizuki. I know we’re getting a sequel and I’m cautiously optimistic about it.
3. The Case Study of Vanitas: Part II - I enjoyed the first half of Vanitas well enough but Part II really surpassed my expectations. I was so invested in the story and the characters and it was such a pleasure to watch each week. I hope we get more of the anime at some stage.
2. Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Ultraromantic - To be honest, I wasn’t massive fan of the first two seasons of Kaguya-sama. It had some great visual gags but I wasn’t attached to the characters or anything and a lot of the gags fell flat for me. And then Ultraromantic came along and I finally fell in love with it. Each episode was hilarious and I was surprised by how invested I was in the romance aspect. I loved all the visual gags and this one stands out as being one of the most memorable anime that I watched last year. I can easily recall several scenes and that’s not something that I can say about most of the shows on this list. So I guess Kaguya-sama won this game.
1. The Orbital Children - This was one of those series that reminded me of how much I love sci-fi. There were so many interesting ideas and details. The plot was gripping and the characters were so much fun, especially Mina. I do think it got a bit convoluted at the end there but I still really enjoyed it and it ended up being my favourite anime of last year.

聖神竜合士 Ex Valkylander
More dragons! I’m glad the Avalanche Rex Buster came out between the two Valkylanders, because the build was very much the same (and this is coming from the guy with ten Cores). It’s cool having the separate Valkylander’s robot and dragon modes, and then the more angelic Ex next to them. Having them look more distinct than each other (especially in a display where there are already multiple very similar MS) helps a lot.
The Good: All the non-pearlescent white parts are new, which allowed for some minor fixes between the releases, with the main one being the hair. The Valkylander’s hair polycaps into the back of the head, which has just enough tension behind it, but makes the hair a little difficult to position at times because it’s on a moving peg. The Ex Valkylander’s hair has the head polycap into the hair, which adds a bit more tension to it, but allows for just a bit more wiggle room when it comes to positioning it naturally. All the distinct elements that made the original dragon mode distinct (head, arms, tail, wings, feet) have been replaced, creating a more distinct form in regard to the Ex. And while the robot modes are more similar, there’s a definite sense of improvement, with the horns and chest being more armored to invoke that.
The Bad: A lot of the issues that plagued the Valkylander are still present here. The hip polycaps still like to slide off, it has difficulty supporting the GN Mega Flare Device. The GN-MFD can’t be separated into separate guns now. Also, it would have been nice if the whites matched.
The Details: There is metallic green panel lining on the Ex, but there’s not a lot of it due to the prolific use of other colors. All the gold was repainted, with additional gold detailing done to the cheek spikes, shoulder details, wrists, lower legs, feet, wings, GN Mega Flare Device, and the tips of its hair. The hair has an attempted black wash to it. The translucent red components had their insides filled in silver, the center of the hips is solid red...
And then there’s the metallic red. Almost every part (that wasn’t entirely repainted) has at least some metallic red on it. All those spherical details were done up in red. I did consider repainting the translucent parts and doing it all in metallic green instead to keep with my themes, but the red looks fine.
Oh, and the eyes are stickers. I could have painted the dragon’s eyes, but decided not to since I couldn’t on the robot’s eyes.
Overall, this is a decent upgrade, with a lot of carried over features, some new ones, and a couple lost to its previous incarnation. It might not be worth it if you don’t have the upgraded Valkylander to make them distinct from each other, but I guess it depends on how much you like dragons, too, as they look concisely different. It’s definitely a feel it out situation, but if you like the first one, you’ll probably be fine with this one, too.

#Repost @colvinology Metaform grape, a 6.6% sour ipa from HOMES Brewing (@homesbrewery) with lactose, dry hopped with mosaic, blended with concord grape and aged on vanilla bean, and the Metal Build Gundam Astrea Type X Finsternis . Aromas are lactose funk, creamy vanilla, and concord grape juice. There's also a definite red wine quality on the nose, although that may just be my non-wine nose smelling "grapes and booze" 😂. The sip hits immediately with sweet grape and vanilla, approximating what I imagine grape ice cream would taste like...or at the very least a grape popsicle stuck in a bowl of vanilla ice cream. Either way it's sweet and refreshing, with just a bit of lactose funk balancing out that grape and vanilla. According to my database of past reviews (also known as my Google Notes), this is the 4th Metaform I've reviewed, along with the Guava, Peach, and Passionfruit variants. This is a bit lighter and brighter than I remember those being, and a lot closer to grape juice than say, the Guava version, which leaned much closer to fruit puree. That change is probably due to the nature of working with grapes, which are mostly water. Overall, it tastes a lot like if you were to make a milkshake out of grape juice and ice cream…Something I hadn't thought of before, but now think might actually be a great idea. Mostly though, I'm just glad for any opportunity to shout-out HOMES Brewery. Those of you who followed more recently don't know how absolutely obnoxious I can be about praising these guys, but don't worry you'll find out soon 😂. (Series: Aohal Devil | Artist: YUFOU)
No. of Reviews: 4
Fall anime season has ended and I have a lot of catching up to do. There were plenty of shows that aired this season that I was interested in but didn’t watch because I thought I’d be better off watching them when they were done. I think I‘ll start with Bocchi the Rock.
Digimon Ghost Game: Sadly, I ended up putting Ghost Game on hold after episode 52. When I started to watch this show weekly, I decided that I would put it on hold if I ever found myself dreading watching it which happened on the morning that episode 53 came out. I’d been starting to get bored with the shows formula for a while and was frustrated with the shows insistence on adhereing to it despite hinting at cool things. Episode 52 was the one that broke the camel’s back. It’s not like it was a particularly bad episode on it’s own but I was so annoyed that the show had been hinting at a new development and that new development was... warp evolutions from rookie to ultimate with no new animations, as well as a new field for them to battle in. That would be annoying on it’s own but it then decided to spend 3 episodes on showing off the boring transformation sequences and new settings and it was too much for me. I probably won’t be picking it up again until it finishes and I hope I will be able to enjoy it again after a break but it makes me sad that it got to this point.
Delicious Party Precure: I’ve been looking forward to watching this one since the start of the year but I held off because I worried that watching it weekly would lead to me getting bored with the formula quicker and I wanted to watch other Precure series this year and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to do that if I was already watching this one weekly. This month, I finally got around to watching it and it was definitely worth the wait. I love the focus on food and enjoying it. I remember one of the things that I hated about Kirakira was how it solely focused on sweets and I like that Delicious Party has a variety of foods that it focuses on. I love the characters and how a lot of the episodes aren’t just filler and also serve to develop those characters or the plot. I also appreciate that while there is some romance, it doesn’t take over the plot and doesn’t become a source of drama. And, of course, the voice actors are all doing an amazing job. I really like this series and I’m excited to see how it ends.
Gundam Witch from Mercury: I don’t have much to say about this one. I’m still really enjoying each episode, and as long as neither of the leads get killed off in the final episode of the first cour, I will be excitedly awaiting the second cour. I won’t be able to fully give an opinion on this show until it’s complete but I am really enjoying it so far.
Spy x Family Part II: I found this part weaker than part 1 and I’m not entirely sure why. I suspect it’s because a lot of the episodes adapted multiple chapters of the manga and these chapters often did not mix well together and made the episodes feel more like a straightforward adaptation rather than something that stands on it’s own as an anime, which isn’t an issue that I had with the first part. That being said, the anime really stuck the landing with a fantastic final two episodes: one that was adorable with two parts that easily melded together and one that ramped up the tension, gave some development for Damien, and set up good hype for season 2.
HiDive is really looking tempting lately, especially with the upcoming Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte anime, but Crunchyroll has just the edge to keep me subscribed with the Precure and Digimon series. Next season, I’ll be watching Bofuri 2, Danmachi 4 part 2 and The Misfit of Demon King Academy 2. Hope to also be watching Magical Revolution but it’s gonna depend on my schedule. I did watch the first season of In/Spectre but I probably won’t be watching the second weekly as I didn’t care for it that much.

神竜合士 Avalanche Valkylander (Avalanche Rex Buster Upgrade Set)
Season two of Re:Rise is on the horizon, and we’ve gotten a bunch of Gunpla reveals, from the upgraded versions of Hiroto, Kazami, and Par’s Gunpla, to our new enemy, to the fact that everyone now has a high speed flight mode (which I find a little strange). I’m a little sad we’re getting the remolded EX-Valkylander rather than another upgrade set. I think it’s mostly that I put a lot of work into all the gold paint >_> but I sort of understand the change, going from the solo act Astrea Type-F back to the original Astrea which was part of a team. It shows character growth, even if the suit is going through a regression.
The Rex Buster is a decent upgrade, adding significant armor to the Valkylander and allowing the Gundragon to become a separate support unit. There’s also a great deal of modularity, and it’s possible to display the Valkylander with all of its armor parts attached in multiple ways.
The down side is that the new armor cuts the articulation, reducing the head movement, preventing shoulder articulation (since the new armor is attached to the back), and getting in the way of the knees. Also, I wouldn’t recommend getting this if you aren’t going to upgrade the Valkylander with it. The Avalanche Rex Buster is just an excuse to put all the parts together as something, and there’re a lot of parts that would be difficult to incorporate into either a Real Type kit (like the legs) or an SD Kit (like the backpack).
Tumblr media
The Details: Like with the original Valkylander, I redid all the gold. There were also a lot of orb-ish details that required metallic green, though very few instances where I could use it for panel lining (the only instances I can name being the marks under the shoulders’ dragon eyes and on the sword blade). There’s a small amount of recessed black detailing present for the shoulder pads and for the sword.
The sword is probably the weirdest part I had to work with. Firstly, I did not paint the handles (even though the Valkylander doesn’t use them). I painted the handles of the Valkylander’s other weapons, and while I haven’t had a lot of scuffing, the added thickness makes it hard to put and pull them out of hands. It features the same gold, green, and black detailing I mentioned for the suit proper, but I also painted the main part of the sword red. Sadly, I didn’t have a color match, and while it doesn’t look great in photos it looks better in person.
Overall, this upgrade set is something you should get only if you already have a Valkylander, or if you know exactly how you want to use the parts for a custom. Just be aware of the loss of articulation.

Scopedog Red Shoulder Custom and Scopedog normal Votoms Trading Figure by K-T Figures (Kaiyodo Takara)
Taken by nuo2x2 with Fujifilm S700
In Japanese mecha shows, it seems red color really means something special. anything just becomes better with red, Char Aznable’s red color, Gundam Astrea F, even the classic, Votoms Scopedog. Their iconic mecha would be the red shoulder Scopedog custom, nuff said.
