I know Tony was forced by the Court's threats to do some of the stuff he did. But there are many little moments of cruelty, such as this, that weren't strictly necessary at all. Was the Court forcing him at gunpoint to continually humiliate Annie and make her life harder at every opportunity?

Gunnerkrigg Liveblog #7: Oh yeah, I have a Tumblr liveblog

Ah, it's good to have university off my plate for the next little while. I should probably check my email for notifications to see what's...

Oh.

I thought I had forgotten something over the past... nine months. I'm sorry.

But the best way to make up for my absence isn't to just say sorry, it's to actually be present for a change. So let us pick up Gunnerkrigg Court where I last left off.

Chapter 12 is titled "Mainly Involves Robots" (12.200), and I assume that it at least partially involves robots. It begins (12.201) by having Annie discuss some things she's learned about Shadow 2 (c.f. Chapter 8 for who that is):

And not only that, but Kat even made a machine that gives Shadow 2 a voice (12.202). Good work, Kat!

After this, we finally get to the robots we were promised in the chapter's title. Annie discusses her past attempts to speak with the robots she encountered on the bridge (c.f. Chapter 7 for what that's about). I also must admire the robots' "ability" to keep their door hidden from the curious public (12.205):

Genius. But when Annie decides to go up to the door again, this time with Reynardine by her side, she comes up with an even more genius idea (12.209):

Truly, this is a battle of wits.

Of couse, this works perfectly, and Annie is let inside. She requests to see "Robot 13," apparently more properly called "S13," but unfortunately, it appears that S13 has been disassembled as a criminal, but his AI survives (12.212), so Annie goes to see it. It's a long hallway, so Reynardine turns from a plushie into a full-blown beastie (12.214). I... didn't know he could do that.

They finally get to their destination, and Reynardine smashes open some glass where S13's CPU is being stored (12.216). This triggers a security system to respond, forcing Annie to run away with the stolen CPU in hand (12.217).

I love how politely naive these robots are. As they escape, the next page (12.218) indicates that all of the robots here think like this.

Once they make it back, Kat analyzes the CPU her friends stole for her (12.220), and plugs it into a device that can allow the late Robot 13 to speak to them. It works, and S13 begins referring to Annie as "mommy." Annie asks what happened to S13 on the bridge, and they (I'll go with "they" until I see different pronouns in-universe) explain how they lost an arm, ran off into the forest, got a seed planted in the hole where their arm was, woke up months later, got possessed by a "shadow man," and then interacted with Annie on that bridge (12.223).

Reynardine, upon hearing this, starts explaining that Annie might have started something bad with that little trip to the woods (12.224):

He warns that his "fool cousin" might retaliate, but when Annie asks what he's talking about, Reynardine retvrns to plushie (12.225).

Annie, Kat, and S13 have one somewhat heartwarming moment (12.226), and with that, the chapter ends!

...from the intense queer fanbase of this show I didn’t expect Utena to insist she’s straight? I mean, from my vague memory of watching it before I don’t think she actually is, but. This feels weird. I probably shouldn’t be surprised? She’s the main character of a show from the 90s? But still. Hrm, I say. Hrm.

I guess I’m spoiled, lately. I do remember reading manga as a middle schooler and knowing nobody would ever be canonically queer. Even Cain Saga, probably my favourite series, which laid on the romantic subtext between Cain and Riff incredibly thick, still had the author repeatedly saying “they have a special relationship but it doesn’t have to be romantic, it doesn’t mean they’re gay/bi” and I grew up kind of feeling like classy things didn’t have gay main characters. That was the realm of fanfiction and ~yaoi~.

It still shocks me, sometimes, when a main character is queer in a show not about being queer. It shouldn’t, I wish it didn’t, but it does. When Kat started dating Paz in Gunnerkrigg Court I was so baffled, even though I’d suspected for a long time that she was meant to be a lesbian-- but you don’t come out and say it! Except that you do, and I’m so grateful for that. I’m so grateful for Ruby and Sapphire’s wedding, I’m so grateful for Scorpia’s intense puppy-dog crush on Catra; things do happen sometimes and they do make me feel real. It still isn’t perfect, but sometimes things are better.

I guess what I’m saying is that I remember the old status quo but I’ve gotten happy enough with the progress we have made that I’m a little surprised by diving back into it?

None of this is to slag on Utena. I don’t know where things are going from here. It just prompted a funny little rant, I guess.

DAY 49 OF LIVEBLOGGING GUNNERKRIGG COURT. TOM IS AN AWESOME WRITER, END OF THE STORY.

Before I’ll start with this liveblog today, I want to say that I’ve receive few messages where people openly criticized Tom, complained about him, even calling him psycho and bad writer and they’re pretty salty about this story. Hmm, I have have no freaking idea what’s going on (I bet that there must be something up with the actual updates but please, don’t spoil me) but I kinda don’t want to see more messages by this type again. I respect Tom very much as an artist, I love his ideas he come up with, his entire work he puts in this comic and I have absolutely a very positive opinion about him. I’m thinking that maybe he either created a very disturbing scene (something like mutilation, a freaking horrible hallucination/nightmare, some kind of twisted monster -I refuse to think at rape because this is webcomic is mostly oriented to children so I trust Tom for not using this shit here) or he killed one of the characters that everyone love (maybe Kat, Eglamore, Reynardine- if Reynardine can truly die) but even so, I’ll still like his work, continue to read this webcomic until the very end and appreciate his talent. Thank you for listening me.

Back to Chapter 33, Give and Take. While Antimony and Kat are meditating over nature/technology, you know, everyone with their interests, they’re not so silently watched by Robot and Shadow 2 and it looks like they become pretty good friends in this time. Its cute how Robot is so carrying and protective over his Angel, I pity the person who’ll DARE to hurt Kat under Robot’s electronic eyes.

It’s Homestuck’s birthday, which means another Homestuck 2 update.

Man, trying to have something exciting for Homestuck fans happen on 4/13 has been really slick marketing, because it gets everyone excited and you see an increase in fanart. I couldn’t tell you what, say, Penny Arcade or Gunnerkrigg Court’s anniversaries were, but every Homestuck fan knows the importance of 413 because it’s built into the story itself.

Anyway, here’s Janey, and here’s Jake wearing a shirt that you can either buy now or will be able to buy soon. Marketing.

JANE: Assassinations, open warfare, so-called "revolution," and where has everyone gone? JANE: They've ABANDONED me. They've taken our precious son. And now...

That’s not really true, Jane. Your friends haven’t abandoned you while people try to kill you! Your friends are also actively trying to kill you! 

It’s a decent joke, but how the hell are Steven King novels even a thing on this planet? Maybe Rose had some.

DIRK: I'm slurping this shit up like it's a piping hot bowl of udon. DIRK: Itadakimasu.

Homestuck 2′s Dirk is dramatically more of a filthy fucking weeb than Dirk was in the original Homestuck, and that’s a high fucking bar.

JANE: Two can play at the hostage game. That loathsome daughter of theirs should fit the bill nicely. JANE: Then those naughty rebels will cease this unruly tantrum, and do what they are told.

This is another instance of Homestuck 2 sanding down the whole “civil war” thing that I didn’t even think about until they called attention to it. Vrissy is not only a member of the rebellion, her adoptive parents are commanders who the God-Empress of Mankind personally hates, and she just kind of casually went to human high school with her only concern being the dead clown and apparently she is only now in any danger.

Oh, this is cool! A wide panel with two separate dialogs underneath! I had to admit I was kind of hoping for an anniversary [S], but I’m happy with a twist on the standard format. It looks nicer than the x2 updates from Homestuck 1, too.

VRISKA: 8ecause there's no way I'm saying Harry Anderson every time. That's like... 8 whole letters too long. VRISKA: From now on your name is just Harry. HARRY: o... k?

Hm. First Vriska Classic renames the new Vriska to Vrissy, and now Harry Anderson has been demoted to Harry. I sense a pattern, and suspect “Tavros Crocker” will not be called such much longer. 

Also, stealing people’s names like that seems very Thief of Light-y, but let’s not get into that just now, even if the last update hinted at a connection between Harry and Heart, which is all about identity. I’m doing this liveblog during my lunch break no time for classpect shit.

VRISKA: If I had to 8et, I'd say you're the thing that pup8ed after a 8ar8aric act of human sexual intercourse 8etween John and some Lalonde or other. HARRY: ok. HARRY: ew.

Hm. Vriska knows Harry’s last name is Egbert, but it’s interesting that she assumes his mom is a Lalonde and not one of the literal planet full of human women, but no one in Homestuck seems to care about the NPC humans so it’s a safe bet. Also I don’t like how hard we’re pushing the line that Harry came out of a person’s vagina and not some slime. I’m suspish.

VRISKA: There WERE no humans on Alternia, okay? There were no humans, and no human "musicals", in my entire UNIVERSE. HARRY: it sounds like a horrible place. ): VRISKA: Yeah, it 8lew so un8elieva8ly hard.

Heh.

But now he's not so sure. Ever since hearing that one of his dad's old friends had turned up, that border between past and present has felt fainter by the minute. And as they talk, he begins to think that Vriska seems so much... fresher. More real. An actual, authentic, bona fide god from another universe. Harry can’t imagine his dad even talking to someone like her, let alone punching her in the face.

One of those file-it-away-for-later moments, but Harry is able to sense that the canon Vriska is “more real” than his dad. 

HARRY: right now i'm in my mom's house with my girlfriend, her boyfriend, and another god damn version of my girlfriend, and all of us are probably now on the run from the fucking GOVERNMENT!!!!

Though he also seems to think Vriska Serket and Vrissy Maryam-Lalonde are alternate versions of each other, which is actually not true, both literally and personalityways.

Harry is not even able to mention the thing he was about to mention, because at this exact moment his phone starts ringing.

I think Harry Egbert has the worst taste of anyone in his family and that’s a high fucking bar

Another, much more obvious reference to the realness attribute of Candyland.

That both Vriskas decide separately to demote Harry Anderson to Harry is a funny gag. Also, between this and the start of the conversation where Vrissy was obsessed with how she appeared on social media, someone needs to be the most important person in the room at all times, which is a trait both Vriska’s have in common with each other, and also in a way with Aranea, so there’s perhaps a classpect aspect to this but we don’t have time for that!

I’m pretty sure John never encountered any alternative-timeline Vriskas in Homestuck.

Hey, it’s Rose and Kanaya!

Individually, they each represent immeasurable gains for the rebel faction. The rebellion's stratagems have never had a fiercer bite; their uniforms have never looked so fucking sharp.  But it is together, united, that their true strength is made apparent. Their bond, a union of love between troll and human, is not only a foundation for the rebel cause, but an integral symbol of its purpose.

Gunnerkrigg Liveblog #5: Pulpy Adventures

Where we last left off, we had seen Annie's history with the supernatural. But today, we are on the 10th chapter of Gunnerkrigg Court, and now we have something completely different:

Yep, this is the title page (10.165). Looks like Tom is going for something a tad different. Either way, the chapter title is "Doctor Disaster."

Our story begins with a classroom (10.166), when suddenly...

Ok, wow, they really are going for something totally different. Very different tone from the rest of the webcomic, right off the bat.

So the students all suit up and follow this scientist guy (10.167), who Anne seems to indicate is a teacher named Dr. Disaster (10.168). It seems as though they're doing a very hands-on sort of class with lots of acting involved. The suits allow them to simulate things (10.169).

Dr. Disaster's simulation has the students all land on the moon to (fake-)fight some aliens called the Enigmatrons (10.172).

Annie finds this whole simulation kinda cheesy (10.174), but Kat convinces her to see the fun side. That's when Kat vanishes and Annie is put in the spotlight for the class (10.175) as she goes on a 'mission' to 'save' her classmates. She rescues everybody (10.177), and by the end of class, she rather likes the unusual teaching style (10.179).

Welp, our chapter is done!

I must say, the change of pace was rather fun. I take it that this was more of a breather episode for Gunnerkrigg Court (as a break from the intricate main plot), and I rather like it.

I'm the one who asked you about Gunnerkrigg Court and I'm so glad I meet another fan. My favorite character is also Kat (plus Coyote, the best trickster god ever) and the only character I really want to die is Annie's father (God, he should win the worst fictional parent's prize). I wonder if you have the same opinion about him.

Sorry it took so long to answer this. I didn’t notice it was there.

Anyway, yeah, Annie’s father was kind of a dick. I’m still sort of mad when he tried to take Renardine. (Also baffled about how the breakout went down.) I’m not to sure what he’s up to, but it seems he was always like that. *shrug*

AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR MY DEAR FOLLOWERS

When I’ll reach with my Gunnerkrigg liveblog at the currently story, I’ll not stop until the next chapter will be out, I’ll start another liveblog (preferably two in the same time- one day I post from one and the other day from another) until Tom will finish another chapter for my Gunnekrigg Liveblog. I would like to liveblog two other webcomics. One called Namesake (a friend recommended it to me and told me that is a bit similar with TV series Once Upon a Time- one of my favorite TV series btw) and the other one Guilded Age (a heroic fantasy webcomic involving 6 adventurers who fight in a world that is a mixture between Middle Age and Steampunk; this is what my friend told me about and she also warned me that is pretty violent/even gore at times. Hmm, I can stomach violence if there’s a purpose at the end of it and is not done completely  gratuitous; after all, another TV shows I love are Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead and nobody can’t say that they’re not violent shows). Ok, so, I’ll do liveblog for Namesake and Guilded Age after I’ll reach the last chapter of Gunnerkrigg Court that Tom wrote.
