Straw Hats Pokemon League AU Part 2

Part 1 : Gym Leaders (Usopp, Chopper, Nami, Brook, Franky, Robin, Jinbe, Sanji) I thought of making the elite 4 yonko or former yonko, warlords etc but it got a bit weird figuring out who would qualify for it so I figured I'd just choose four of my favourite characters and run with it. As stated in the previous post, everyone is alive and well and it's all very wholesome; I'm not making an evil team either because there's too many goddamn antagonists to establish something coherent. All elite 4 members get full teams off the bat because I can

Ground Specialist Nefertari Vivi: Vivi is part of a tradition of ground type elite 4 members including her dad and Crocodile and she’s thriving! Cobra is doing just fine and both of them have mentored her to varying degrees, although she still maintains (justifiably) that Crocodile is an asshole. I like the idea of her wearing her coronation outfit in the official league battles and switching to more casual stuff when you actually see her in her hometown. Golduck is there as a tribute to Karoo, and the Sandaconda is a nod to Cobra. Hippowdon would help set up sand streams but also per the first post it’s implied that she gave Nami a hippopotas egg that hatched from her own. Cobra has a Nidoking and Crocowani has a Krookodile. Team: Golduck, Garchomp, Sandaconda, Gastrodon, Hippowdown, Nidoqueen

Fire Specialists Portgas D. Ace and Sabo: Ace is the successor to Whitebeard’s old elite 4 position, and *dealing with some stuff* after a lifetime of inferiority complex knowing he’s the son of a former GOAT champion. After you clear the league, he decides to take a bit of a mental health break and Sabo fills in for him, although you can still find him for rematches. I almost almost gave Brook the Skeledirge because I wanted him to have more musical Pokemon, but I thought it’d be funny to give Ace a ghost type (wink wink nudge nudge) His team’s not the most balanced in that it has a lot of sweepers and is very offence oriented, but I think that suits his character and there’s some thought behind it (lots of drought and heat rocks to nerf water as much as possible and boost the team, probably an air balloon here and there to help balance out the ground weakness, and give the Incineroar and Armarouge some fighting moves to counter rock types). Sabo is also kind of a fire specialist, but he gets lots of dragon types as a tribute to his mentor and signature attacks in canon. He also gets a Charizard to kind of link the two brothers since the Mera Mera doesn’t exist in this world. Ace’s Team: Volcarona, Mega Charizard-Y, Drought Torkoal, Armarouge, Skeledirge, Incineroar Sabo’s Team: Mega Charizard X, Haxorus, Ceruledge, Chandelure, Turtonator, Salamence

Mixed Dark/Fairy Specialist Charlotte Katakuri: I was caught between having either him or Kidd as the third elite 4 member but I ended up choosing Katakuri just because I personally enjoy him more. I thought of giving him a dessert team at first but there’s no donut Pokemon as of yet and I figured that would suit Linlin better in the event that I do make a team for her, so I’m giving him a lot of dark and fairy types. Mismagius and Hatterene are both there as tributes to Brûlée and I wanted to give the bitey boy something known mostly for its extremely prominent hidden jaw as his ace/signature Pokemon  Team: Grimmsnarl, Obstagoon, Clefable, Mismagius, Hatterene, Mega Mawile

Ice/Water Specialist Trafalgar D. Water Law: Law still has his submarine, although he uses it a bit more for research purposes; you run into him in the Polar Tang while you’re being dragged around doing underwater side quests at Jinbei’s behest. The Beartic, Cetitan and Empoleon are there mostly as tributes to Bepo, Shachi/Hakugan, and Penguin, and he leans toward ice/water specialization because of his crew and their polar theming. I thought about giving him an Eiscue, but I figured Empoleon would help balance the team a bit more and generally feels slightly more sword-fighty. Alolan Ninetales is the exception to the polar marine animal theme (although ig it could technically be an arctic fox) but it’s mainly just there to set up hail and I don’t think Aurorus suits Law any better. I thought of giving him an arctozolt to match the colour scheme of the Polar Tang but I ended up choosing Weavile just because it seemed more aesthetically suited to him.  Team: Beartic, Cloyster, Cetitan, Empoleon, Alolan Ninetales (snow warning), Weavile

Champion Roronoa Zoro: Zoro is, at present, the champion of the region although he doesn’t really think it suits him, and straight up tells the player that someone else who’s stronger and who he’s deeply loyal to should really be in his place right now. His team is annoyingly, almost detrimentally sword-themed and painfully unbalanced. He’s basically the Wallace of this world, in that he’s got the chops to be where he is but he’s still basically filling in for the real champion/final boss (Luffy) It’s implied that he and Sanji had a massive fight over who should take the seat after Luffy stepped away from being the Champion; Sanji claims he chose his current job so that he could focus more on his cooking but keeps insisting he totally could have beaten Zoro is he really wanted to and it remains a major point of contention. The rest of their friend group is sick of it.   Team: Samurott, Scizor, Lucario, Mega Gallade, Absol, Kingambit

Final Boss: Pokemon Trainer Monkey D. Luffy This one’s a bit weird; Luffy’s team isn’t meant to be especially balanced or well thought out because Luffy isn’t a strategist and chooses his companions on pure instinct, but he still needs to have those mythical Zoan attributes, a monkey theme, and stand head and shoulders above all the other bosses, so I slapped a bunch of legendaries/mythical Pokemon that had Luffy vibes onto his team and let him approach battles with a “hit hard, ask questions later” kind of attitude. The Infernape was his starter and given to him by Ace, who obviously raises little fire types in his free time, and it’s there for the obvious Wukong connection. Annihilape kind of reminds me of gear 5, the Tauros is a tribute to Ucy/Moocy, Hoopa has chaos vibes, and Victini is there as a symbol of victory and liberation. Pokemon Trainer Luffy's Team: Paldean Tauros (Combat Breed), Infernape, Zarude, Annihilape, Hoopa, Victini

I figure other Yonko, Warlords, Supernovas, or major antagonists could be frontier brains or something along those lines but I have spent enough time coming up with Pokemon teams for now.

Drifts in stage left to throw out ye olde op pokemon au thouguthts and a small idea I had for Sabo’s handover exhibition match versus Dragon in order to become Baltigo city’s gym leader

Dragon opens first because he has nothing to hide, a Thundurus specifically already in its Therian form because exhibition matches are for show and if he’s being suceeded he will go out with a bang

Sabo stares at the display in a distant kind of shock like firstly thats not a dragon type, secondly what the fuck, thirdly he wouldnt have expected anything less from his mentor, wouldnt have had it any other way

Chompy is totally going stir crazy almost a frenzy inside his ball, he wants out so Sabo lets him go right ahead hes not gonna deny his partner a good chance to throw down, shrugs his jacket right off bc its gonna get hot but also who doesnt like a little fanservice with the popped collar open dress shirt look (the gym trainers playfully heckle him with taunting boos like put that shit back on nerddd!!! We know that some Pokémon gyms have little side businesses that the Gym leaders run. (Ex. Valerie's fashion house, Cilan, Chili,and Cress's Restaurant, Lenora running the Nacrene Museum, etc.) My question is: does Sabo have something of that nature in the Baltigo City Gym?

Huh good question, I’ve never thought about this until now

He owns a side business in bouldering, abseiling and rock climbing

Because his gym challenge is a sheer cliff face climb versus his dragon gym trainers waiting at select arenas on elevated platforms around the cliff

I should probably sketch out the gym so you all know what I’m envisioning but I think its cool

So when the gym is not being set up and used for official challenge battles, all the flood lights are on and the gym is open for climbers to come test their times or just for recreation, by climbing up the cliff face, there’s several routes all with varying difficulty, for the sake of general public athleticism the gym challenge climb is the easiest route — bc the point of it is to have your pokemon help you navigate in the dark, and battle in unfavourable conditions, the actual physical part isnt that important

the marines and the world government and pirates dont really exist in this au obs hahdvdb but i was hinting that the league committee was sus, sussy as hell but i didnt have much else to pad this concept out

General concept is there’s a big “calamity” incoming for this story, what it is i still dunno but the league committee is absolutely at the center of it all, as is the general??? Government? We have to assume theres a political presence in pokemon?? So we have a overarching government power and they oversee the entirety of the grandline and the islands i guess and theyre in cahoots with the league committee

So there’s this concept that trainer’s and their bonded pokemon can “sync” when they mega evolve , this phenomenon is present in other “gimmicks” but for the sake of mega evolution being the first big game changer of its kind and Ash having ash-greninja as a alt form im going to use this for the au

This means a variety of things but mostly what kind of bond is needed for this perculiar sync to occur? How strong is it, is it emotional attachment? Or not?

The boa sisters were experiments, for this phenomenon, the result was a sense of detachment for all of them, specifically hancock as she seemed to have the most promising temperament for this special bond

As a result, Hancock does not use mega evolution, she despises it and maybe as a shield, to protect herself has built her empire and gym (she is the 5th? Gym leader) over a dynamax spot, the gargantuan size of her pokemon helps her feel safe and thats all she is willing to say about any of the competitive battle tactics she likes to see her pokemon tower over the challengers so she feels in control, at all times no matter what

Marco and Ace can use mega evolution and their bonds with their available Pokémon who can evolve this way are stable, trusting and loving, this is the best possible outcome for a mega evolution bond sync, this is what every top tier trainer should be aiming for if they want to utilise such a powerful form

Sabo however is like Hancock, he’s got potential, and it helps that he’s highly attuned to his Garchomp

There’s a second tier to mega evolution where a trainer and partner pokemon sync so closely its hard to tell where their personalities start and end, for Hancock she was experimented on with charizard mega stones (she has a great fear of dragons…) she became violent as did the bonded charizards, but the bond was forced and painful and left a scar on their minds

For Sabo which many would say is a good relationship, becomes more bestial, taking on Garchomp’s hotheaded animal mind so that Chompy can become more level headed, its like a trade in a sense, Sabo takes the animal impulse from Garchomp so he can become more rational, this is because mega evolved garchomp are violent, uncouth beasts that should never even have such a demonic temperament, without a good trainer they’re unstoppable creatures out for blood

Basically Sabo becomes a bloodthirsty feral bastard so Chompy can use his mega form without fear of hurting anyone, any physical changes on either is most likely a trick of the light but there have been photos of Sabo with slit pupils thrown around the forums

Luffy also has potential too but he doesnt know it yet, he currently has no mega stones or pokemon who can evolve this way

You wanted a Pokémon au question, here's one: has Luffy ever broken into Sabo's gym just to camp out on the battlefield so he can be the first one to challenge his brother?

Haha no he hasn’t, because Sabo has very tight gym security, I’m adding this lore bc Sabo’s the last gym leader prior to the elite four meaning he’s excellent security

Sabo’s gym currently holds some rare artefacts that need to be protected and what better guard for it than the eighth gym leader and his army of dragons

Dragons like guarding things so it makes sense to have them adopt these items into their hoards

Luffy stayed at Ace’s ranch for a week before his official gym battle with Sabo, he loves and misses Ace too much to go break and enter a cold dark gym

Plus he finally gets to meet Mr Marco! (He’s a doctor, luffy) and then Marco has to sit politely at the kitchen table as Luffy lists off all the things hes gonna do if he breaks Ace’s heart

After an hour of his potentially gruesome death details Marco smiles at Luffy like “You’re going to have to get in line. Ms Rouge and Sabo have already given me the exact same talk.”

What's the story with the 7 Red Scabbards in your Pokémon AU? What roles do they play?

Unfortunately idk anything about the scabbards (haven’t read/watched wano) all I know is Kine’mon and Kiku are the best imo

But then again idk who the other five are 😂😭😂

so i like to believe theres a ton of shady shit going on behind the scenes of the grandline league challenge, Mihawk wants no part of it, Sabo suspects shit, other gym leaders are probably part of it

Ofc the ones at the tops pulling the strings is a messy three way power struggle, Big Mom, Kaido and Blackbeard (they’re three out of the Elite Four… oof.)

The Scabbards in this au probably exist as a special investigation force that’s currently looking into why the megalopolis of Wano has been shut to outsiders all of a sudden, as per canon Wano has one entry and it’s with the DIVE tm or a hired ride Pokémon that knows dive (yeah i know its a waterfall but i think diving to get to a city is cooler) that entrance is sealed currently

So theyre sus like why? What’s Kaido doin? Why he shady huh

So why’s the grandline league filled with shady shit, bc with titles like elite four or gym leader, these people can get resources and manpower and “good” reputation super duper mega ez like it’s no small knowledge to know that elite four member Blackbeard regularly reaches out to people who have seen a legendary Pokémon, when prompted about this he just laughs like who doesn’t want to chase greatness

Anyway ee yeah scabbards are trying to figure out wtf is up with Kaido, they have a cool assortment of Pokémon, stuff like all the Eeveelutions because theres seven right so one for each scabbard :3 (well nine? Excluding Eevee eight actually? Jolteon Flareon Vaporeon Espeon Umbreon Glaceon Leafeon Sylveon????? ) ok so excluding Sylveon and Eevee theres seven evolutions 👍🏽

Extremely pleased to have the op pkmn au Sabo set done!!!

1. Kid Sabo and his newly obtained Gible who unfortunately was the one who burned him :( poor babo, its ok they bond rly fast bc of it!!!

2. Teen Sabo and his Gabite, rookie trainer and pokemon looking to take names and become stronger for many reasons

3. Adult Sabo and Garchomp, Sabo’s way more mature now compared to his teen self who was… edgy for lack of better description 😂 as edgy as a teen dragon trainer could be that is, he’s mellowed out now and follows Luffy’s adventures thru his Pokégram account :3

4. Adult Sabo, again but with a promotion under his belt as he’s now the Grandline League Challenge’s 8th and final gym leader, as expected his loyal Garchomp is his signature Pokémon and often mega evolves him, further proving their incredible bond between each other

Also thinking abt how pokemon au Sabo would be the city’s heartthrob like dudes the last gym leader in the league challenge, he’s got dragon type mastery (the most difficult type to work with other than ghost/steel/poison/fire) and he’s handsome too? Wild tbh

He probably has a die hard fanclub made up of middle aged moms and dads 😭😂who are into the gentleman aesthetic he rocks whilst handling giant fanged lizard monsters

His only drawback is he’s genuinely awful at social media, his second Koala has to deal with that mostly and Sabo, like Ace is not very photogenic, most of his expressions are either mid speech or hes moving so he’s kinda ugly/blurred in most of his pics not that this matters to him or his fans 😂
