Shout out to the maker of the Alex's Mobs mod for Minecraft for adding gynandromorphic lobsters, kind of a biology nerd deep cut. There are mantis shrimp too. Beautiful

gripped by the urge to update shade king ghost’s design after the information in this post, you would not believe the hoops i had to jump through to figure out whether/which species of charaxes and polyura are sexually dimorphic
A rare red and white cardinal in it's festive colors makes an appearance in Canada. It's unusual look is caused by gynandromorphy. The bird's chromosomes didn't separate normally after fertilization causing the red and white plumage.
"In summary, we document only the second record of bilateral gynandromorphy in the Green Honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza), and only the fourth record for any species of thraupid tanager. Our observations extended over an unusually long period (21 mos) and are the first of a gynandromorph of this species alive in the wild. Moreover, the bird we observed exhibited female plumage on the left and male on the right, the opposite of the previous case from over 100 yrs ago."
I designed an Animal Crossing villager for myself! Latte is a lazy bird whose catchphrase is “espresso.” They're based on a northern cardinal with bilateral gynandromorphy, so their left half has male plumage and their right half has female plumage. They wear lots of knit sweaters and scarves.
I'm not 100% certain about their name or catchphrase, but I think I like these for now. Initially I was going to choose a plant or insect name for them and make their catchphrase “sunflower” because cardinals like sunflower seeds, but none of the names I considered fit quite right.
This Is What A "Split Lobster" Looks Like. This Coloring Occurs Once In Every 50 Million Lobsters. This condition is known as gynandromorphy, meaning it is half male, half female. In this case, the blue side is the female side, and the brown side is the male side.

Four Ornithocheirus Pterosaurs for sale! Including two speculative "Gynandromorphs": http://www.palaeoplushies.com/
Two of these individuals are bilateral gynandromorphs! One side appears male, the other female. During the early stages of development, when an organism consists of very few cells, a rare event can occur where the sex determination cells do not split correctly, resulting in one half of an organism developing female traits and the other male traits. Gynandromorphy is observed in many insects, crustaceans as well as in birds. It is most noticable in species that display sexual dimorphism, such as this cardinal.
The possibility of gynandromorphy in Pterosaurs is unknown, and depends on their sex determination system- if their sex is determined genetically, like birds, then gynandromorphic individuals is a possibility. However, it's likely that pterosaurs had thermal sex determination like living crocodillians, which would mean bilateral gynandromorphy is not possible. Take this plush as a fun exercise in speculation!
#TeratologyChallenge day 5: (bilateral) Gynandromorphy
This is most dramatic in animals with clear sexual dimorphism, like insects and birds. Or, say, fire-spewing Elder Dragons. This is actually a completely different phenomenon from chimerism: it’s not two fused embryos of different sexes, it’s one embryo that segregated its sex chromosomes wrong early in development. Depending on when and where the error happened, up to half of the resulting organism can be descended from cells coding for a different biological sex.
(I’m late, I know, work got crazy. May or may not catch up at some point.)
