22 août 2017 - Des chutes d’eau aux champs de lave

Faux départ, le réveil n’a pas sonné. Nous quittons le camp un peu plus tard que prévu. Cela nous laisse quand même largement le temps d’aller voir de plus près trois chutes d’eau : Selfoss, Dettifoss et Hafragilsfoss. Petit plus : la météo est toujours avec nous ; le soleil brille et le ciel est complètement dégagé.

Nous partons d’abord en direction de Selfoss, la chute d’eau la plus en amont des trois. Je gardais un bon souvenir de cette chute, que j’avais trouvée bien plus belle que la puissante Dettifoss en 2011.  Et je reste de cet avis. 

Nous remontons un peu pour arriver à Dettifoss. Le débit de cette chute d’eau est toujours aussi impressionnant !

Pour aller voir Hafragilsfoss, nous prenons le fameux passage un peu escarpé qui mène au bord de la rivière. Et en effet, la descente est raide : une corde permet de la sécuriser mais il faut mettre un peu les mains. Ceci dit, les marches sont bonnes et il n’y a pas de grosse difficulté pour qui n’a pas peur du vide. C’est le seul passage vraiment compliqué.

Nous remontons la rivière, surplombée par les orgues basaltiques.

Les falaises ont par endroit des formes surprenantes. Nous y voyons ainsi parfois des visages, nous donnant l’impression d’être observés d’en haut.

Nous arrivons au niveau d’Hafragilsfoss et restons un moment pour l’admirer. Petite mais vraiment jolie.

Nous revenons sur nos pas et rentrons au camp. Il est temps de démonter les tentes pour prendre le bus. Une partie d’entre nous ira directement à Mývatn, pour profiter des bains chauds, tandis qu’Eva et moi descendrons à Krafla pour rejoindre à pied Mývatn, à travers les champs de lave.

Sur le parking, nous commençons par répondre à une enquête. On nous demande de donner notre avis, en tant que touristes, sur le développement de nouvelles centrales géothermiques, hydro-électrique ou encore l’implantation d’éoliennes dans les highlands ou dans les zones moins reculées d’Islande. Jusqu’où la nature nous semble-t-elle intacte ? Nous donnons notre avis. Me concernant, je trouve que l’augmentation du tourisme a déjà considérablement dénaturé certains sites. Si on pouvait éviter d’en rajouter une couche, ce serait pas mal.

La parking est situé à proximité d’une centrale géothermique. Ça fume dans tous les sens mais surtout, ça fait un vacarme du diable ! Imaginez un réacteur d’avion à coté de vous, qui tourne en continu et vous aurez une idée assez précise du bruit et de son volume sonore.

Nous suivons le chemin marqué jusque Mývatn. Nous passons d’abord par une zone d’activité géothermique, avec des sols aux couleurs ocre, jonchés de solfatares.

Nous passons ensuite un bon moment à faire le tour du champ de lave de Krafla. Long de 19km, d’une épaisseur pouvant atteindre jusqu’à 8m, il nous faudra une petite heure pour admirer tous ses recoins.

Au milieu de tout ce noir, quelques touches de couleurs surgissent tout de même ici et là dans le champ de lave.

Mais ce qui surprend le plus, ce sont les fumerolles qui s’échappent encore par endroits, alors que l’éruption date des années 80.

Nous quittons le site et continuons en direction de Mývatn. Il nous faudra un peu moins de 4h pour y arriver. Nous retrouvons le reste de la troupe au camping qui au bord du lac. Ce soir, douche ! La dernière avant... ?

Fraîcheur et humidité s’invitent durant la soirée. Nous récupérons la nourriture pour les deux prochains jours et nous la répartissons entre nous.

Demain, nous prenons le bus pour Herðubreið, pour nous enfoncer un peu plus au cœur de l’île.
