All day I was thinking about running around the park after work. I wondered if I would get my run in before the forecast rain and snow arrived. I wondered if the blossom trees were in bloom yet and I wondered if the Daffodil beds had survived the sprinkling of snow we had last week. At 3.30 I packed up my desk, got changed and headed off out the door. There was a cold wind blowing but it did not take long to warm up. There were plenty of runners out running under the blossom trees today. I could have run faster but I just had to stop and take pictures. I am a big spring fan! As I ran back to the office I realised I still had plenty of time before Hubby collected me so I ran through the gardens where I paused for my photo taking. I still had time once I had run through the gardens so I headed over a bridge and ran back to the office the long way and rounded out the 10km by running around the block several times. It was a good run. My grumpy old knee was happy today once it had warmed up and my weird pain in the butt was not a problem. When I got back to the office I did some stretches while I watched out the window for Hubby. Once home the rain arrived with gusto I wonder if we will get more snow.

Happy birthday to me! I took the day off of work Friday to give myself a long weekend. Before I started working, I used to go to a weekly coffee with a wonderful group of women, but I don't have the opportunity anymore now that I'm working that M-F 9-5 grind. So, this lovely Friday morning, I headed off to Dune in New Brighton for some lovely breakfast and coffee. I have some amazing friends back home who kindly sent me a few little treats, and they were able to give me a great day!
Tumblr media
Once breakfast was over, I decided to go to the hot pools, which was only about 2 minutes away. It was a bit of a crappy weather day - the day started by raining sideways with high winds, but I kept an eye on it, and, when there was only one ticket left in the time slot I wanted, booked in real quick to make sure I didn't miss out!
Tumblr media
It was still a bit miserable when I got there (as you can tell), but it was so nice to sit and relax in the hot pools. The rain let up and the blue sky peeked out after all!
Tumblr media
After that, I went to grab myself a few cupcakes (salted caramel macaron and lemon meringue) and got ready for dinner.
Tumblr media
I went out for dinner at a place called Bar Franco with Lauren and Heather. We had a nice meal that ended with some limoncello, before heading back home for a few more drinks.
Tumblr media
All in all it was a great day!
Tumblr media
Saturday, I took the day to rest and relax. I caught up with the Meg(h)ans, Erin, and Katie Cooney for a while, including a slide by slide review of the PowerPoint they put together from their visit to me. Afterwards, I went for a nice walk and had a chill day, ending with watching the JLo/Owen Wilson film "Marry Me."
Tumblr media
Sunday, I joined the group I usually walk with for a great walk around Hagley Park with a lovely coffee break. After, I caught up with Erin (not the same one as Saturday) before getting ready to head into the week. Felt very loved this weekend with all the birthday well wishes!

Hagley Park, Worcestershire
It is getting a bit ‘backendish’ – as they say in Yorkshire – and the Folly Flâneuse is taking a short break. Meanwhile here are some of the wonderful landscape ornaments built by the Lyttelton family at Hagley Park, seen on a perfect autumn day as the leaves begin to turn bronze and gold, and the mist clears to reveal a blue sky. Day 7 Towntober: Park
Did a redraw of a photo I took in Hagley Park Christchurch while visiting a friend. Birds are two paradise ducks (Pūtangitangi) with their chicks. They're endemic to New Zealand.
[Image ID: A sketchy drawing of a footpath winding through a park. There are some trees planted beside the path with large branches with roughly painted leaves making the pathway more shaded. To the left of the path there is also a grassy incline down to a river. The river is hidden from view due to some two long leaf plants: flax and toetoe. Near the front of the path there are two adult ducks. One is lying down in the grass and is a very dark brown. The second duck is mid walk and has a light brown body and white head. To the left of the ducks are 3 ducklings which are light grey with a darker grey stripe down their back. End ID]

When we eventually locate the van it’s a ship too, a square blue and white 1980s Nissan, stolidly earthbound in the middle of the mown field. Metres from it is a generator, and a radio antenna which stands like a spectral parody of the kind of public sculpture it is not.
I start to draw a diagram that connects the widely disparate geographical elements of the work: the National Sound Archive on Cashel Street,4 the temporary encampment in Hagley Park, and the uncharted vacuum of outer space. At the centre of the diagram, and of the sculpture project, sits the van and transmitter: a purposeful, itinerant monument, inhabited by amateur radio operators. Surrounding it in a circle is the public park, bisected by lines of visitors to the van, and overlaid with the archival radio broadcast — a series of dotted lines — and arcing upwards is the line of radio waves which reach the ISS and the astronauts and continue beyond, off the page and perhaps forever.....
I draw a kind of cloud, thick with zigzags. It makes a clean equation on paper, completely dematerialised and spanning a vast stretch of space, and sits cleanly with Leach and Noble’s stated desire not to add more stuff to a cluttered and broken post-quake city.
Largely immaterial, the work is held together by a sculptural logic which relies on displacement: the tenuous possibility of making a real connection to somewhere else — somewhere as distant as the past, or outer space —and the currency of sound as a vehicle for collective recall, and anticipation. It is both preposterously expectant and resolutely conceptual. Maybe, maybe there will be an affirmative reply to one of the call signs issued. A small community of believers arrive intermittently at the van in time for scheduled passes, but it’s not a response they come for. Rather it’s to listen to the still-present voices of a Christchurch that was, and to be part of a transaction with the farthest reach of inhabited space. They come to listen to the radio. They come to remember what it’s like to get lost.

Māori Rock Drawings
Tumblr media
Today, I joined a Meetup group on a walk in Waikari, 45 minutes north of Christchurch, to the Māori Rock Drawings at the Weka Pass Historic Reserve.
According to the Department of Conservation, Māori first explored the Weka Pass area about 1,000 years ago. The area was originally forested, and Māori would visit the area on their seasonal round for food gathering. Māori used the large overhanging limestone shelter as a temporary overnight camp. It was during these stays that they drew on the shelter wall, using charcoal from their fires and red ochre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1929, at the direction of a museum director, some of the drawings were painted over with house paint in the name of "conservation," actually destroying the historical significance of the drawings and the site.
It was a beautiful walk, terminating with a trip across the way for coffee, drinks, and food.
Tumblr media
Later that evening, Margaret and I attended Sparks, a free concert in Hagley Park featuring the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Annie Crummer, Roslen Ulaula, and Harry Burt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The evening ended with some incredible fireworks as the CSO performed the iconic Indiana Jones soundtrack!

"I'm not actually sure why I started running. As a kid, I had health issues which prevented me from being overly active but after a life giving operation at the age of 14 my perspective on the world changed. I probably always liked a challenge but now I sought them out. Mostly it was through learning new things and seeing what I was capable of.
I had a friend at work Sarah who I started tramping with in my 30s and I fell in love with being out in nature. That same friend compelled me to then do the 5k Corporate Challenge. I had never really run in my life, so it was most likely at that point that it all started and I did a bit of training for that. I really struggled as I felt my body was not made for running, but I enjoyed the movement and going out in the morning when it was still quiet around the park so I persevered. It did get better and I did a few 10k events to keep the momentum going. I then decided to challenge myself even further and did my first (and so far only) half marathon. That was certainly an experience and I learnt a lot about myself in completing it, particularly my tenacity to keep going even when the going gets tough.
After that though I kind of had a break from running as things in my life changed. I still sought adventure and every holiday over the Christmas period for the last 7 years, I have done a Great Walk solo. I am pleased to say I have just completed all the South Island Great Walks having just come off the Milford Track!
It wasn't until my friend Maria who was helping out with Hagley parkrun decided to become a run director a couple of years ago and I said I would come along to support her first time as an RD. Sure enough she was amazing and I ran again for the first time in a long time. I have now done over 50 parkruns and will probably keep at it as Maria is a great motivator. She managed to get me to do a 10k run last year which I didn't think I had in me, but managed to survive.
I think I keep running because I like moving in different ways and appreciating all that my body does for me. I am currently learning tap dancing. I am a swing dancer and a Scottish country dancer, having done both these things for many years. I started yoga while at Uni and continue to practice and being able to focus on my breath while running has really helped me get through the tougher experiences.
On my 39th birthday, I decided I would do 40 new things before I turned 40. Completing 25 parkruns was one (which I achieved on my 40th birthday!) and for the month of June I did a challenge within a challenge and did Sweat with Pride which involved doing at least 21 minutes of exercise every day. But of course I had to do it a bit differently and made it a different form of movement every day which included roller skating, aqua aerobics, pole dancing, martial arts, trampolining, and juggling, to name but a few (and I did have one rest day!).
As you can see I do like a challenge, so even though I am just getting back into running and have said I would never do a marathon... watch this space! Next up though is the Whanganui River Journey!"

Embracing Nature: Conservatories in Christchurch
Introduction
Christchurch, New Zealand, a city renowned for its stunning natural beauty, is home to a unique and captivating feature that showcases its commitment to preserving and celebrating nature - conservatories. These botanical havens offer residents and visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the lush and diverse world of plants, flowers, and ecosystems from around the globe. In this article, we will explore the conservatories in Christchurch, their significance, and the remarkable experiences they offer to all who enter.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens serve as the heart and soul of the city's conservatory culture. Established in 1863, these gardens cover over 21 hectares, featuring a stunning array of plant life and outdoor landscapes. Within the garden's sprawling beauty lies the jewel of the conservatories - the Cuningham House.
The Cuningham House conservatory is a splendid Victorian glasshouse dating back to 1923. It houses a vast collection of exotic plants and flowers, including palms, orchids, ferns, and seasonal displays that change throughout the year. The conservatory's elegant design, with its intricate ironwork and glass panes, adds to its charm, creating a serene atmosphere where visitors can escape into a world of vibrant colors and fragrant blooms.
Visitors to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens can take leisurely strolls through the lush greenery, relax by the Avon River, and explore the various themed gardens. The conservatory is also a popular venue for weddings and events, with its enchanting surroundings providing an unforgettable backdrop for special occasions.

Located in Ferrymead Heritage Park, the Enchanted Garden is another delightful conservatory in Christchurch. This hidden gem offers a magical experience for visitors of all ages. As you step inside, you're transported into a whimsical world filled with fairy tales and wonder.
The Enchanted Garden features a collection of exotic plants and flowers, but what sets it apart is its imaginative design. Visitors can wander through lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and enchanting pathways that lead to charming surprises. The conservatory is adorned with fairy houses, mythical creatures, and secret hideaways, making it an enchanting destination for families and those with a penchant for fantasy.
The Enchanted Garden also hosts events and activities throughout the year, from storytelling sessions to themed workshops. It's a place where the boundaries between reality and enchantment blur, leaving visitors with memories of a truly magical experience.
The Curator's House Conservatory
Nestled in the heart of Hagley Park, the Curator's House Conservatory is a picturesque venue known for its historic charm. This unique establishment combines the elegance of fine dining with the allure of nature.
The conservatory at the Curator's House is an idyllic setting for dining, weddings, and special events. Surrounded by lush greenery and adorned with hanging plants and flowers, it offers an intimate and romantic atmosphere. Guests can enjoy a gourmet meal while being immersed in the natural beauty that Christchurch is known for.
Otari-Wilton's Bush
While not located in Christchurch itself, Otari-Wilton's Bush is a renowned native plant reserve and conservatory in Wellington, just a short flight or drive from Christchurch. This conservatory is a testament to New Zealand's commitment to preserving its unique flora and fauna.
Otari-Wilton's Bush boasts an extensive collection of native New Zealand plants, including many that are endangered or rare. The conservatory serves as an educational hub, offering visitors the opportunity to learn about the country's native ecosystems and conservation efforts.
Visitors can explore the reserve's walking trails, which wind through lush forests, fern groves, and wetlands. The conservatory itself houses a variety of native plants, from towering tree ferns to delicate orchids. It's a place where you can truly connect with New Zealand's natural heritage.
Conclusion
Conservatories Christchurch and the surrounding areas offer a unique opportunity to escape into the world of nature, whether you're exploring exotic plants in a Victorian glasshouse, wandering through an enchanted garden, or enjoying a meal surrounded by greenery. These conservatories serve as reminders of the city's dedication to preserving and celebrating the natural beauty that New Zealand is known for.
In Christchurch, where the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 shook the city to its core, these conservatories stand as symbols of resilience and renewal. They provide a sense of tranquility and wonder, inviting visitors to reconnect with the healing power of nature.
As you explore the conservatories in Christchurch, you'll not only witness the incredible diversity of plant life but also experience the profound connection between humans and the natural world.
