College Street and Chowmein College Street a name that throngs the memory of every Calcuttan who loves and lives with books. A bookworms paradise which harbours some of the most prestigious and oldest educational institutes of the city reside a stone's throw distance from each other. So much so that one man's balcony is another man's view and one man's door to leads to another. Slowly and gradually the institutions are changing and becoming more modern but will it override the fervour of the area. An affluent bunch of students born and brought up in the changing times often doses off the history that it was and only visit it for nostalgia. But it's the memory of an old US teacher which I celebrate here. Being a tourist in my city he was quite attracted to the history of the educational institution lying side by side and particularly about the All Bengal's Teachers Association. But amidst this chaos and dilemma of the past and present, business and culture thrive. Like this small eatery called "Tasty" serving Chinese delicacies beside the Niyogi Bookstores. Like other eateries in the area, it has retained its formula. The formula of topping the chowmein with chicken instead of mixing them together. I sometimes, wonder what they were trying to achieve by this technique. To me it seems like an hybrid adaptation, a combination of ideas of Hakka chowmein and ramen bowls albeit without the soup. This is how vigorously ascertained our cultural identity is. You can take the Chinese out of Calcutta but can you take them out of yourself? This is how the consensus of people serves above the consensus of nation. Funny how experiences change from one region to another - often from one alley to another but all the while retaining its vigour. So, while your at Asia's largest second hand book market. How about trying out some of its street foods and lesser known eateries? HakkaChow for the Win
HakkaChow for the Win
I talked about this in this week’s The Man Who Ate the Town Podcast.
Egg Rolls
Stephanie, along with 5 other friends and myself went out on Saturday to celebrate my birthday. The restaurant that I chose was HakkaChow. I had eaten there a few times but, I’ll admit, it’s not in my area of frequency, meaning I don’t get over that way often. I had done an interview with Jonathan Chung, owner, sous…

A few days ago I was hankering to eat some #chinese food. I was actually craving for #hakkachow but didn't have any noodles left. So with only three packets of Maggie on store, I ventured to make this #kungpaofried rice with leftover #rice and #kungpaochicken So I scrambled 2 eggs, tossed in the rice, the shredded pieces of 3 Kung Pao chicken, added salt, soya sauce, vinegar, black pepper, some green chillies and one dried #bhootjholakia and stir fried to make this. #impromptu #impromptucooking #imprompturecipe #leftovers #leftoversforlunch #leftoverrecipes #homefood #homecooking #homecookedfood #instafoodporn #instafoodgram #instafoodblogger #foodbloggersindia #foodblogger #kolkatafoodblogger #kolkatafoodblog #AgantuksRecipe #AgantuksBasket #foodgram #foodblog #indianchinese #chinesefood #indochinesecuisine #indochinesefood https://www.instagram.com/p/B-wYztfA958/?igshid=111rlom1okg5c

Quite loving this Mongolian mushroom cheese balls and Hakka noodles bowl from the @thebowlcompanyindia This festive special combo is really good Though it lacks the cheese in the mushroom cheese balls yet it's an excellent mushroom combo for a mushroom lover like me. Only one problem the bowl is too much for a single person to finish. It's ideal for 2 people. They should have a mini version of this bowl as well. Liked the well cooked mushroom with a light and flavorful coating. The sauce available with other bowls is missing here. An interesting sauce or dip will enhance this combination. #bowlcompany #combobowls #combomeals #chinesecombo #chinesecombobowl #mushrooms #mongolianmushroom #mushroomcombo #hakkachow #indianchinesefood #indianchinese #kolkatafood #kolkatafoodscene #kolkatafoodblogger #kolkatafoodblog #foodbloggersindia #foodblog #foodphoto #foodporn #foodphotography #mushroomlover #mushroomaddict #foodgrammer #foodgram #foodie #foodblogfeed #indianfoodbloggers (at Santoshpur Jadavpur) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4C6ZWsg4SX/?igshid=wpkviix2r32i

Search for new restaurant in old Community Arts Cafe, a good idea?
A review of Tim’s birthday dinner at HakkaChow.
Don’t forget my sponsor, Washington Perk & Provision Company. Better than a convenience store but not quite a grocery store, in the heart of Washington Park and Downtown WSNC.
