Also I forgot about them until now but one of my OTHER favorite characters is one that Éinín and I lovingly refer to as hamilkin (whose actual tag is like TJefferson or something Idr). They’re a player who gets kicked out of the league because they wrote fanfiction about other players and also they joined the Washington state team thinking it was a Washington DC team and are permanently spiteful about it. They’re maybe the one character that’s retained their initial concept as a joke oc and they make me crack up every time I remember them

hey. what's your opinion on feeling like you're kin with a character if that character is directly based on a real person in history? i know i'm partly having a kneejerk reaction like NO BAD because obviously you should have respect but (and i apologise i'm baby to all of this) fictionkin see canon as a past life, right? but since the character has the real life story as "backstory" isn't it like saying i was this person in a past life? basically... is that still fictionkin? is that ok? idek!

This is honestly a very fun topic for me, as I was present through the “Hamilkin” wars and am now expectantly waiting for the same drama to rear its head amongst Our Flag Means Death ‘kin. Honestly any big source based off of real historical events and/or people will find itself mired in the same discourse, and I wish I had a better answer for you, but a lot of the time to me it just boils down to being kind of funny.

Past lives are a real concept even outside of our niche ‘kin circles, and folks have been claiming to be reincarnations of famous dead people pretty much since there were famous dead people to be reincarnated as. So in that respect, yes, they would technically be considered past lives.

But on the other hand, fictionkin, unlike otherkin, is an umbrella term that covers any kintype from a fictional source, even if said character is human. Additionally, there are many ways for someone to identify as fictionkin, so it isn’t always a past life situation. Being ‘kin just means you identify as that character, it doesn’t specify how or why you do. That part is up for your own individual interpretation.

Historical fiction ‘kin are generally pretty hotly debated, and I’m really not an authority here so I can’t exactly tell anyone how their identity works, but I can say that I really find it interesting when the lines between fiction and non-fiction get blurry. After all, how else would we get Thomas Jefferson’s Miku binder? If you’re kin with that character, are you kin with the real Thomas Jefferson? No, right? It’s a fictional counterpart of a real person, and the lines do get very blurry there, but technically you aren’t the real guy. Just a fictional version of a fictional version. 

At the end of the day, if it makes you uncomfortable, that’s fine. It’s a strange, rather nebulous area, where you’re like one degree of separation away from admitting that you identify as a heinous person who existed in real life. And if I’ve learned anything from the whole Hamilkin thing, it’s that nothing is gonna stop them from doing their thing. So you might as well do yours!

Look guys I don’really know much about otherkin but isn’t it transphobic? I don’t know, obviously, because if I did I wouldn't ask. But isn’t it a transphobic thing? Can someone please explain plantkin to me? And is kinning something a spiritual thing or just a ‘oh lol I relate to this character/creature’ thing, because I dont get how you can spiritually BE a fictional character someone actually created and thought up, and then also, is Hamilton kin fictionkin? Oh gods, I wish I remembered any specific drama. Mostly it was just the hamilkin trying to live their lives (with the occasional doubles drama, which was prevalent back then) while being attacked by antikin. I only got involved with the kin community proper around 2017 and I didn't listen to Hamilton until 2018, I think? So whatever I might've witnessed firsthand was quickly forgotten. Nonetheless, it was bad enough that it got a Know Your Meme page.
