My son might have hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) 😩

Some other toddlers he hangs out with have it since a few days and since this night he has fever as well... Not looking forward since I will most likely catch it as well and it sounds like no fun.

Per one of the peds docs, hand foot mouth disease is going around the kids. He recommended oral solution 1/3 Benadryl, 1/3 maalox, and 1/3 lidocaine. Keeps kids out of the ED getting an IV because they can’t feed.

In case you didn't know, if you have postnasal drip or suspect you do, it can cause throat irritation! The irritation will be an inflamed throat (you can see it in mirrors), soreness (might even be slight, persistent, and not get worse over the course of a few days), and may have sores.

Remember to still get tested for strep or ask about hand, foot, mouth disease if you suspect you have either of those, and to of course see a doctor because you might need an antibiotic.

Can't wait for the blister phase. The also fun fact I've learnt is that it can make your nails fall off.

Hand Foot & Mouth Disease

What is it? Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a mild, contagious viral infection common in young children. Symptoms include sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet. There's no specific treatment for hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

How do you get it? The virus can spread to others through an infected person’s saliva, drool, Fluid from blisters or scabs or poop. They are usually most contagious during the first week that they are sick. 

So my wonderful daycare decided not to disclose that there were a few cases the week prior until after Anderson had already shown symptoms. Super upset because I in turn also got it as an adult (which is generally rare).

The child:

Day 1: fever 102.7 (administered Motrin 2-3 times a day)

Day 2: very cranky, loss of appetite (administered Motrin 2-3 times a day)

Day 3: visible bumps around the mouth, bottom, and knees (administered Motrin once a day)

Day 4: appetite has returned, bumps still visible and multiplied to feet, hands, and interior of mouth (administered Motrin once a day)

Day 5-6: crankiness has subsided a bit

Day 7: interior of mouth seems clear, demeanor back to normal

Myself:

Day 1: fever 103.6 (my symptoms began 3 days after the child’s) took adult Tylenol

Day 2: loss of appetite (most likely cranky)

Day 3-5: immense sore throat (visible blisters inside mouth)

Day 6-7: blisters still present, some pain has subsided, fever of 102 on both days (however working could have exacerbated my condition) took adult Tylenol

Day 8: fever subsided, blisters still present and difficult to swallow

Treatment: We went to the doctors and there’s nothing they can prescribe since it’s a virus. Cepacol and other numbing medications have not worked/helped. Even my usual honey/orange hot water concoction is not doing it for me. Oddly the only relief I get is every time I brush my teeth and use mouthwash – weird.

Food: fruit was our enemy, anything acid was just awful on the throat. Soft foods (and surprisingly spicy foods went down well). So a lot of overcooked rice (porridge), mashed potatoes and soft serve ice cream was consumed during this time. Other things I made: tteokbokki, jello, yubuchobap, eggs.

It sucks because I’m over here sick taking care of another sick being – who’s taking care of me man?

I’m sooo haunted by what you said abt Tor being referred to as the son of Ares and it reminds me of this scene in the perlesvaus where after Arthur (who is kinda likeable in this text??) learns abt the circumstances surrounding his birth, he takes on the persona of Arthur of Tintagiles . it’s not textually explicit but I like to think it’s bc he’s disowning his father :))

I could talk about Tor forever. The implications of his origins and how he is portrayed during subsequent events? Like he is “Son of Ares” on a technicality—he was dubbed before Merlin revealed Pellinore as his sire (one of his many hilarious “a wizard is never late, he arrives precisely when he means to” goofs…) so Tor’s stuck with that title.

However everyone breaks the rules so you mean to tell me he just… kept a title he didn’t identify with? Not likely. I could go on about the titles different knights have but I digress. The essay nobody asked for lol

Anyway Arthur good???? I’ve heard people discussing this text but haven’t read it myself I’m intrigued! I choose to believe in some universe Arthur does disown U*her. He should really lean in and be Arthur FitzIgraine, just cut the man and the place of his birth out entirely. C’mon Arthur you can do it! I’d love other details to support it like Merlin speaking positively on Arthur’s line of succession and he’s like… “Let me not be known by those who came before me, but by the legacy of my deeds in life.” Or something… also he should do right by Guinevere then I’ll accept decent Arthur and no sooner! Lol

My worst was probably when he started asking when I wanted to get married (I was only 19) and saying that we’d make ‘super cute mixed babies’ on the second date. Talked about his exes and listed off all the European ethnicities he’d dated before like it was a bucket list hahahaha.

Red flags even before that but yeahhhhhh… that made me feel weird lmao.

Just over here trying not to die from the Hand Foot Mouth that M gave me after she picked it up from the airplane back from Florida (we suspect). Pediatrician said she got it in Florida. Then was kind enough to share with me. Apparently I’ve never had it before.

This really sucks. I had a fever, body aches, sore throat & chills first. Now, I have lesions on my scalp, throat and hands. My hands are the worst. I’ve also had insomnia 2 nights in a row. The 50mg of Trazodone did NOTHING.

Tylenol & ibuprofen are NOT cutting it. The spots hurt so bad and now even the ice pack is making my hands hurt when it was relieving it. Gabapentin does nothing. Earlier today it hurt to text on the phone it was that bad. It’s slightly better now.

It seems to be going slightly faster than M’s course, though? Probably because I have more of an immune system than she does? But I’m still super annoyed Jim didn’t get this or COVID.

I really want to be able to go to my annual PCP appointment (that had to be rescheduled) on Tuesday & get my nails done. That would be nice.
