So @sassaffrassa and I and a couple of friends decided to do an informal kinda sewalong just to get ourselves moving on I'm Gonna Sew Stuff One Day I Promise.

Sew Liberated was having a sale, so we decided to try the Matcha Top, which at the time was like eleven bucks. Why not. So we got the PDFs and each went through our various travails of printing them out and whatnot. And I'm just gonna talk about the process here, in case anybody else was thinking about getting into sewing, and kind of a review of the pattern. Day 1: Prepare the pattern, and look up other reviews, and figure out what the heck you're getting yourself into.

So, the Matcha Top. it's one of S-L's older offerings, and it only goes up to a size 24. Which is a 48.5" bust, by the measurement table. But it also says there's twelve inches of ease at the bust in the finished garment. Okay so yeah no, this will fit my 50" bust then, no worries. It goes on to say that the only real important measurement is your shoulder measurement. So I measure my shoulder, from where I'd want one sleevehead to be to the other, around the back of my neck, and I get 16", which puts me in a size 10. Uhhh.....

I read a bunch of reviews, which all agreed this thing fits real boxy so you can size down pretty freely, and then I looked at the pattern pieces. Well, the only thing that really matters is that shoulder fit, and the collar. I draped the collar piece around my neck and decided I did want the biggest size there, so I just. Went ahead and cut a straight size 24, and I figure I will take in excess in my toile. I am making a nice wearable toile though, with nice fabric, it's just not expensive fabric. Because I figure, it's a boxy top in flowy fabric, whatever size it ends up being will probably be fine.

Looking at the pattern pieces I am slightly skeptical of the grading. I'm used to seeing like... contours, but these are just straight-up every single pattern piece is expanded in size the same amount from one size to the next, regardless of things like... a plus-size person's skeleton is not larger than a straight-size person's, so it is bonkers to scale up the shoulder at the same rate as you scale up the squishy areas like the bust. So the pattern direction to just cut the size that fits the shoulders is probably correct. The size 24 shoulder is not actually knowledgeably scaled to fit a human being. Somebody "graded" this with a rolling ruler. Ah well. Reviews suggest the more recent patterns by this company are better, so I won't get too mad. But do keep that in mind, as you look at this.

Well, so I marked on my shoulder detail piece where the size 14 line would be, and expect I will trim it down, and use that to place the sleeve, and there'll just be a lot of excess fabric at the armscye that I'll have to trim off. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Or I'll, idk, put some pleats in under that shoulder detail. It has you attach it pretty early. I might be prepared to unpick this thing a few times.

I fondled my fabric stash, decided on a drapey rayon-cotton(?) mystery challis, and the collar and shoulder details in a contrasting cotton-poly solid. Got that cut out one evening when nobody was around. (It does say in the pattern instructions to use something with good drape. I looked at pattern reviews and yeah anyone who used linen or a stiff quilting cotton got a boxy fit out of it. You really want drape here.)

Then I lost my mind due to the stress of house remodeling, and after I'd ironed interfacing onto the collar and shoulder details, I embroidered on them. Why? IDK but it gave me something to fixate on for a couple of hours while there was demolition happening in my house and I couldn't get to my sewing machine.

So anyway.

That's where I'm at, and I'm hoping this afternoon/evening I'll have time to do some sewing.

Marina graced the April 2019 cover of PAPER Magazine. The superstar looked gracious modeling the most colorful Spring/Summer 2019 fashion while talking about her then-newest album “Love + Fear”.

We’re starting off strong with a total look from the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2019 collections (one of my faaaaves!). This ensemble included an orange & pink ostrich feather-embroidered cropped top with the matching voluminious feather print silk trousers.

Our girl crowned the first look with these gold & silver-tone linked chain earrings from French jeweler Annelise Michelson.

Next, an all-red ensemble is presented to us which hails from none other than the maison of Valentino. This Pre-Fall 2019 romantic number is a pleated pussy-bow cape-effect red silk-georgette mini dress with concealed mother-of-pearl buttons.

Marina's jewelry included the Jil silver loop earrings by Luz Ortiz, a ring by Annika Inez and a pinky ring by Jennifer Fisher!

The insane heels are courtesy of young emerging designer Ganor Dominic. These are the Apollo red mirror pumps.

Crafted by artisans in Italy within a factory owned by a family who have been creating shoes for two generations since 1968 – Ganor Dominic bespoke designs are all handmade with locally sourced materials and components.

One of the most interesting looks have to be this white circle-shaped wrap front jacket and suede leather pants which were seen on Balmain's Egyptian-themed Spring/Summer 2019 presentation!

She completed the look with this Lady Grey Jewelry warped silver metal earring...

...and this silver metal corset belt from the aforementioned Balmain collection.

Iconic Italian label Versace set a colorful statement with their Spring/Summer 2019 collection which set free this gooorgeous neon-green jersey midi dress featuring a feminine draped neckline, long sleeves and a risqué slit!

M rocks two different sets of earrings for this look. The first ones are the Hannah Jewett Plus One earrings featuring totemic figurations suspended on gold hoops with little lucite discs.

Her other ones are Givenchy Pre-Fall 2019 mismatched mixed media earrings featuring pearls, chains, rhinestones and coins!

Her neon-green patent leather block heel sandals with crystal-embellished buckle are from the same Versace collection as above.

Our final look comes from Louis Vuitton's Spring/Summer 2019 runway and is this fantasic silver sequined laser-cut structured mini dress with strong shoulders and mock neck!

Lastly, she rocked a pair of Déchainée Mono broken silver chain link earrings by Annelise Michelson.

Weeks 5 and 6, Sept 27 - Oct 4

I had several areas of focus for both the previous week and over reading week. I ended up straying a bit from my productions schedule, but I think the quality overall is better than I originally planned for.

I made a huge improvement to my texture workflow by learning Adobe Sampler over this most recent week. With it, I was able to create much more convincing (and visually appealing) textures for some of my nature items.

The first week I only made two textures with the program using textures online:

These turned out okay and gave me the ability to learn the program, but I wasn't fully satisfied with the results. I determined the issue was the image quality I was working with, and so I went out the next day to take photos with my phone camera.

You can see the improvement I made in a short time period because of this:

Continuing on from the week before reading break, I have rigged and textured the book prop the character will be using in many shots in the film. The low render quality does not highlight the nuances of the paper texture in the normal map applied, but it is there.

The book is rigged so that the book can open and close. In the animatic, the last page of the book turns and reveals a torn page from the book (not shown in images, but is there). It is rigged for this as well.

I would like to retexture the book cover in Adobe Sampler before rendering, but at the moment I have more important tasks to handle with first.

I completed my model's base clothing in Marvelous Designer. I did a sketch before I created the clothes in an attempt to finalize the design before creation.

My goal for her outfit was to create a combination of 1750 - 1800s historical fashion (pleated undershirt collar and sleeves, elaborate patterned embroidered skirt, gold threading, etc) to juxtapose the other elements of her clothes that feel as though they could have been made by a utilitarian adventurer for comfort and warmth while exploring (fur collar/scarf, leather boots, warm under layer, etc.) I wanted her to appear as though she once lived a life of opulence that has since been abandoned in favor of (self) exploration.

This is the current clothing model. Some adjustments and compromises were made to her design for the sake of time and to minimize difficult collision calculations (the ruffle collar was removed, as were the belt loops on the skirt.)

I still have to make her cape in Marvelous Designer. Other elements of her design (like boots, fur neck wrap, and belt) will be modelled in Maya separately. It took some time for me to re-learn Marvelous and make this outfit, so I will be continuing the clothing this week.

The wolf mask has also been modelled. The mask in the animation is carved and made of wood, so I wanted the mask's surface to include some cruder, less refined details so it seems as if it was handmade. Before I bake this to the low poly version, I want to add some asymmetrical variation to exemplify some imperfections.

Textures for it will be finished this week.

In addition to environment prop textures, I have made some of the tree models and plant models that will be a part of a sort of modular kit for environment construction.
