Valto Hanksi is a career criminal who makes his money smuggling archeological finds across international waters for high paying clients. Occasionally, however, he deals in a much more precious cargo.

When he was sixteen, Valto lost his eye (and very nearly his life) in a hunting accident. He survived, but his status in the town suffered greatly. He had been born healthy, and thus, was not considered 'Favored' enough by the All Seeing Shepherd to serve in the local church's inner sanctum. Yet he was too young for the church to take over his care, and after losing his job (and subsequently, his apartment) due to his newfound disability, he had to move back in with his parents. His parents saw this as an unfair burden on their shoulders, and Valto's first year of recovery was a living hell of shouting matches, blame, and guilt-tripping.

When he was eighteen, Valto stole his father's snowmobile and pawned it in Poiketa for a bus ticket to Kittilä (and later to Helsinki) where he did odd jobs for shady people and slept on attic cots until he could afford a one way plane ticket to America. He picked a city at random (flights to Gotham were alarmingly cheap) and paid off a friend to get him a fake Visa, and tried to start his life anew.

He originally brushed off the Vargkonung resistance when they reached out to him, as he thought the invitation was a trap set by church leaders to tie off any loose ends outside the town. Valto then got drunk that night and had a strange dream about a red dog leading him through the snowy forests of his hometown, and then he woke up face down on his desk.

Valto took this as a sign, and agreed to talk to the resistance.

It's still incredibly difficult to smuggle a Favored out of Vargkonung, as they are so closely monitored by the local sect of the cult Church of the Burning Root, but Valto has managed to help more people like him, who became disabled later in life, escape the town and find new lives in America (mostly Gotham, though a few do move further inland). Many of them ended up working under him out of gratitude, and helped him build his criminal enterprise from a handful of opportunistic thieves to a decent sized gang.

Valto takes advantage of the superstitions of his hometown to control the members from Vargkonung by giving them little metal pins stamped either with an arctic starflower (praise) or a twinflower (threat), depending on whether or not they've pleased him. The power has absolutely gone to his head.

Hanksy’s Adam Lucas’s “Some Grow Up, Others Grow Down.”

For years now Adam Lucas has existed as pop-culture art phenom Hanksy, whose pun-tastic, quick-witted wheat pastes and paintings have tantalized, beguiled, angered and delighted countless passer-by’s, myself included.

But now, as Lucas’s exhibition title suggests, it’s time for him to the name to bed.  “Some Grow Up, Others Grow Down” is the artist’s first show completely dropping the Hanksy moniker and features paintings that are quite a departure from his street art oeuvre, finding him moving closer to something out of a Cubist fever-dream.

Adam notes, “The last five years have been fun and full of pun, but things are slightly different now. My day-to-day is changing quite a bit and the current administration is a damn tire fire. The work I’d like to create right now makes more sense without the Hanksy label.”

The exhibition will be on view for four days only at 151 Canal Street in New York City with an opening reception from 7 to 9PM on Wednesday, November 8th, 2017.
