Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood.
If you’re reading this because you think you might be one, my advice is: close this book right now. Believe whatever lie your mom or dad told you about your birth, and try to lead a normal life. Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways. If you’re a normal kid, reading this because you think it’s fiction, great. Read on. I envy you for being able to believe that none of this ever happened. But if you recognize yourself in these pages – if you feel something stirring inside – stop reading immediately. You might be one of us. And once you know that, it’s only a matter of time before they sense it too, and they’ll come for you. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
My name is Percy Jackson.

Birthday surprise
Being surrounded by ocean on all sides was not how Percy had planned to spend his day, but here he was. Stranded on a dingy. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Lucky for him he could easily get back to shore, but that would be counterproductive. This was the first time he'd gotten a chance to be alone in a while.
All in all, he could have woken up in a much worse situation. It had been a while since the Stoll brothers had pulled such a prank on him, but jokes on them, he was going to pay them back tenfold. How they had managed to send him out into the middle of nowhere---Percy knew exactly where he was, but that was beside the point---was the true puzzle. Actually, now that he thought about it, they probably only intended for him to be stuck in the middle of the bay near camp. They were going to freak out once they realized he was no longer in the boundary.
So much for some alone time. Feeling the flow of his powers, Percy used them to guide his little dingy back in the direction of Camp Half-Blood. It didn't take long for him to reenter the camp's magical boundary and bring the dingy up onto the beach. Once he had, he began making his way to the pavilion where he could hear campers moving about.
Among the casual conversations of the other campers, he could hear Annabeth yelling at someone---scratch that, two someones. "-the middle of the ocean! You're lucky he's the son of Poseidon."
Percy smiled, walking up behind the Stoll twins and grabbing one of their shoulders with each hand. The twins stilled beneath his touch.
"You two have no idea the payback I'm going to rain down on your heads," Percy told them.
"Percy," Annabeth said. "You're early."
Percy blinked. Early? "For what?"
That was when he looked around and saw all the party decorations the campers had been setting up.
"Oh."
"Happy birthday, Percy," Annabeth told him.
