It doesn’t take Emma long to learn that being a Time Traveler is not exactly easy. It's unpredictable and peculiar and exhausting and requires an inordinate amount of running. Yes, she spends most of her first twenty eight years running - running and running and running, and so very very lonely. And then a boy shows up on her doorstep. A boy named Henry, the son she gave away to give his best chance. A boy she brings home to a strange little town, to a woman with dark eyes that flicker so rapidly from surprise, to wonder, to anger, that it gives Emma whiplash. She is only confused further when she lands in a future where those same dark eyes look at her with unimaginable softness. A future where Regina is wearing a wedding dress. A future Emma has no time to truly comprehend before she is being dragged back to the present, left with nothing but questions.

Could she really get everything she ever wanted? A family? Love? Is any of that even possible for a Time Traveler - for her?

Interview with @ Lego_Femslash ​ and their work for The Swan-Mills Family Conquer Disney World

What is your favorite medium to work with?

Lego bricks, because I am essentially just a tall, financially independent 13-year-old.

How do you choose the story? Do you look for something in particular, like a visual, for your art or is your choice based on the story itself ?

This time it was protostar art, so I got to come up with a silly story that Sam then turned into this epic that I absolutely love. Generally, when making my Lego pictures and dialogue, I'm just trying to make my wife laugh. Because this was a protostar piece, I wanted to do a couple of scenes that had enough story to give a concept thing, but that an author could do their own thing. Basically, I wanted to do one of those starter pictures for Mr Squiggle, so someone could work on it and say "upside down, upside down" (no idea if that reference translates outside Australia, but you get it).

What did the story make you see that you decided to create this particular piece? Was it a particular feeling/mood or scene?

I love going to Disney World and Disneyland. When I was building the Disney castle that I got for Christmas, I just started imagining how the Swan-Mills family would experience "the happiest place on Earth", the quintessential example of an All American Good Childhood Activity, especially when all the characters are based on their friends, and Regina is supposed to be a villain. Also, I'd recently built a ferris wheel that I motorised, but accidentally made way too fast, and that was just too funny to not do something with. (Luckily Sam reminded me that it's Disneyland that has a ferris wheel, not World, so I cropped the final pics a bit, but you can still see the wheel a little bit in the background of the Mouse pics.)

Do you have any particular steps when you are making art?

I'll see a thing, or think something random and go "pfft, that's dumb. I must build it". I'm embarrassingly bad at editing photos, so once all the building is done, I'll take the photos, then ask my wife what she thinks of the minute lighting and contrast changes and she'll make various noises of "it looks exactly the same as before, and it's fine", then I'll add the text in Preview while muttering that next time I'll know what I'm doing and do something fancier. It's been a few years now, I'm probably not going to do something fancier next time.

What is your preferred working atmosphere? Do you have a certain ritual? (e.g. : Like listening to a particular song/album or do you prefer silence, or do you prefer working at night) What did you do to get yourself in the creative mood?

I got one of those little trays with the legs from Ikea, so I set myself up with my bricks in front of the TV. Depending on whether it's something I've Bricklinked, or a set with numbered bags, I might sort the parts into tiny drawers. Then i'll open the instructions or my plans on an iPad, because the little paper books never stay open the way you want them to. Back when I had a Lego room, it was a lot easier to spread out and set up for a bigger build, like a street or something, but now that I live in a tiny apartment, the challenge is not just being limited in how and where I can build, but also what I do with the sets when I'm not using them.

What is the most difficult part of doing art for a written text? What are challenges you face in your work process?

It's pretty easy to make scenes from existing works, the challenge with protostar is not just coming up with an idea and writing it, but leaving it open enough that an author can make it their own, and trusting a stranger to take your idea and make it awesome. Working with HappyLikeAFool was such an absolute joy, she did amazing things with this story, and found aspects of it that I hadn't even thought about. The collaborative experience with her was exactly what I dreamed Supernova would be like, and I'm so proud and excited to be able to call this talented writer a friend because of this process. And sure, I didn't answer the question at all, but I'm just happy to be here.

Tell us something about yourself (e.g. your darkest secrets are preferable but a funny fact will do too) ?

I dropped the castle when I moved house recently. I dropped it and the pieces went everywhere and it was awful. More than 4000 pieces, a month of building... Of course, it's Lego, and I shall rebuild, but damn that was a heartbreaking moment. Especially when I now need it again for my next bit of protostar art...

Here is our interview with happylikeafool; for their story “And Then Some”

What inspired your story?

Kind of a mix of things: When the Supernova announcement came out I’d just finished a fairly long, non-magic, AU, so I wanted to write something different - canon divergent instead of another complete AU. The Arkells song And Then Some had always given me Swan Queen vibes, and 3B in particular vibes, with lyrics like: Since you came back, I see things differently; when I’m gone, do you think about me?; and I adore you because you don’t care where I came from. So, I'd been contemplating writing some kind of 3B fic inspired by it for a while.

Also, not too long before this, I’d tried to start a fic set in 4B where, instead of a bunch of blank books in the Author’s mansion, each book was an individual person’s detailed life story, and Emma got trapped in hers and Regina had to go rescue her. I couldn't ever get into a groove writing that fic, so I stopped trying, but I was still interested in exploring some of the ideas I'd had for it - namely, Regina finding out some things about Emma's past and how that might affect their relationship. Oh, and I also didn't want to have to work that hard to deal with/get rid of the shrubbery, so I wanted to set it early enough in canon - 3B works nicely for that. So, I sort of rolled all those things together, and what came out was And Then Some.

Let's get deep: why do you write?

It's definitely just a hobby. I enjoy writing.

Do you ever have conversations with your characters, and talk back to them?

Nah, no conversations. Although, the stuff that comes out when I start writing sometimes surprises me. There are scenes that I've plotted out from the very inception of a fic, but there's also stuff that, when I sit down to write, sort of just happens in the moment.

What is your favorite type of writing to do?

Fanfiction for sure. I prefer to write hurt/comfort type stuff. Also fluff. I just want Regina and Emma to get to be happy. The only other thing I write with any regularity are reports for work - and, unsurprisingly, those are a heck of a lot less fun to write (and to read, I'd imagine).

If you could live out one scene of your writing what would it be?

I don't think that I would like to live out anything I've written, as in me in the place of the characters, but it would be really cool to get to see something I've written live action. If I had to pick one scene from this specific fic, I'd probably go with the non-date date, or maybe either of the scenes at the playground with the swings.

How do you shape your characters?

Ummm...I actually don't really know. I guess they are already pretty fully formed, which is nice. I do try and pick out traits that are uniquely a character's and run with those.

What do you do when you’re no longer The Dark One, but the town still whispers about you so you can’t do your job? That’s the dilemma Emma faces in this new story written by @happylikeafoolsam​, well that, and trying to solve some mysteries (and forget that night that definitely didn’t happen).
