一年一度的中秋節期間，正好適逢邵族的過年。傳統邵族的過年，既原始又有人情味。為了準備過年，族人在七月時就都會到山上去設陷阱捉捕野獸。然而，事實上，邵族以前的過年並沒有固定日子，而是由部落裡的長者來做決定，到後來才把過年固定在農曆八月初一，而在過年期間，通常也會藉由舉行祭，來感謝祖先一年來的庇護。

每年農曆七月的最後一天，邵族人開始舂杵音，揭開祖靈祭的序幕。早期舂石音只能由部落的婦女為之，男子是連舂石音的場地都不能踏入的，現金已無此限制，男女族人一起持杵同舂，以傳承這項別具特色的文���。

祖靈祭是邵族最隆重的祭儀，也是邵族族人為了感念祖靈的庇佑，藉著祭儀的舉行，感謝祖靈所賜予的作物豐收、漁撈豐盛、獵物豐厚。古代傳統的祖靈祭，在祭前邵族男子們會上山捕獵野獸，下潭捕抓魚類，並且釀造粟酒，以備過年之用。
