This question is more about your thought process on writing rather than anything very specific about the game but how did you decide which traits would be built in and which would be under the player's control? We control Musicality/Theatricality but not something like "charisma" or "songwriting ability". The character is written to be objectively charismatic and good at writing songs when that COULD be something players could emphasize or play down. You decided those traits were non negotiable for the character. Kind/Hostile and Humorous/Reserved are pretty common sliders on choice games but what made you decide Professional/Relaxed was important enough to have its own bar? The survival skills section hasn't come into play yet and the implications kind of freak me out but I haven't seen enough of how that's going to work to ask about that part.

To be super clear I LOVE that the player character is a strong character in her own right rather than a grey outline that the player has to fill 90% in but that's not a common way to write the viewpoint character in choice games. You clearly have a decided idea of who this woman is and I'm curious both how you decided what was integral to the character and what you could let the player control and, it occurs to me as I'm writing this, why you are writing this as a choice and game and not a novel.

I feel like a weirdly aggressive BBC reporter going after a baffled MP just trying to eat lunch in her office, sorry, this reads as more accusatory then I meant it to but I don't know how to write it better.

Oh where to start... I'm not one to even sit down and find the time to write a novel. I have way too many hobbies. When I say this is truly a general "for funsies" hobby that I didn't anticipate anyone would care about other than me and my closest friends, it cannot be overstated.

As for MC's stats and personality, I went for traits that felt amendable enough to ensure that one could explore different variants of the same MC to its fullest potential (within the context of the story). Word-salad and a half, but hopefully that makes sense.

It's crazy you say that, because in my drafted version of my edit of the demo so far, I added a Charisma stat that allows the Humorous stat to function more separately and specifically. Because until a week and a half ago when I began this draft, charisma and humorousness were interchangeable essentially.

Professional/Relaxed bar initially was "Hard-Working" and Relaxed; in the coding the variable for "Professional" is literally "hard_working" funnily enough. This bar is relevant in the case of what MC values as important to her in life; which will come into play more as the killings begin to unravel within her sphere, which I'm excited about. Depending on how relaxed she is or isn't, she may but her career on the back-burner once a new facet of reality is brought to her forefront.

I am honoured to be the baffled MP eating her lunch in her office to your weirdly aggressive BBC reporter (which you are absolutely not, by the way). In fact, I wouldn't have it any other way!

I just had a very silly idea (also an explanation of the DF Values System).

This is gonna be a long 'un, so 'ere's a read more.

It's a Dwarf Fortress idea. I'm gonna generate, right now, a Human Civs cultural value, but first, for anyone who needs an explanation for what on Earth I'm talkin' about

An Overview of Dwarf Fortress Personality Values

If y'need some assistance understandin' what I just said, lemme explain. Dwarf Fortress Civs have Cultural Values in their raws. Which means a default attitude on any given topic by the Civ's culture, the Values are also known as 'Personality Values' because they influence a person's personality. In-game you'll find Dwarves have 'like most in their culture they value' and then usually a long list of how they have 'a great deal of respect for the law', 'greatly prizes loyalty' an' so on. Wi' only their personal exceptions highlighted, like a Dwarf might have 'doesn't really see the point of working hard.' which is an exception t' the normal cultural value bein' 'deeply respects those that work hard at their labors'.

The differing views are part of what influences any given Dwarf t' act and react differently from any other Dwarf (note I said 'part of' 'cause there's more at play than jus' Values). It's always kinda strange when you see the rare Dwarf who is 100% a conformist t' Dwarven Cultural Values.

Now, these values am defined by numbers in the raws. All the ones I jus' listed: Law, Loyalty, Hard Work are set at '30' via the tagging of '[VALUE:X:30]' in the Dwarven Civ raws (wi' the X bein' LAW, LOYALTY AND HARD_WORK respectively, of course).

But what does this abstract value of '30' actually mean? Well, the scale ranges from -50 to 50 and is catagorised into 7 ranges: -50 to -41 being the Lowest Regard, -40 to -26 bein' Very Low Regard, -25 to -11 bein' Low Regard, -10 to 10 bein' Neutral Regard, 11 to 15 bein' High Regard, 26 to 40 bein' Very High Regard an', of course, 41 to 50 being Highest Regard.

Each Level of Regard gets its own sentence, which is what you see in a Dwarf's character sheet rather than some random numbers. In our Hard Work example the lines are for Lowest 'finds the proposition that one should work hard in life utterly abhorrent', for Very Low 'thinks working hard is an abject idiocy', for Low 'sees working hard as a foolish waste of time', for Neutral 'doesn't really see the point of working hard', for High 'values hard work', for Very High 'deeply respects those that work hard at their labors' and for Highest 'believes that hard work is one of the highest ideals and a key to the good life'.

That make sense? Functionally there's not much difference between a 30 in Hard_Work and a 31, or even a 26 and a 40, but the different ranges alter a person's views on things, as I said. We ay gonna get into all of that and we ay touchin' Personality Facets t'day (though that is a rich and big topic as well).

So, Human Civs

Now, as I slightly touched on Dwarven Civs have their values defined in the raws. A long line list of hard-coded values readin' [VALUE:LAW:30], [VALUE:LOYALTY:30], [VALUE:FAMILY:30], [VALUE:FRIENDSHIP:30], [VALUE:POWER:0], So On and So On (I only kept that goin' so long t' show they ay straight 30s all the way). Every other Civ also has their values hard-coded like that...

Except the Humans. Unlike any other Civ-type Humans only have 1 line of code on this Values matter: [VARIABLE_VALUE:ALL:-30:30]. That randomises every Human Civ's Cultural Values between Very Low and Very High regard, but never the extreme Lowest and extreme Highest (of course, individual Humans can have the Extreme Views, but we're talkin' Overall Culturally).

So, Understand the Silly Idea Now?

That's right, I thought it'd be fun t' get meself a random number generator open and generate meself a full 33 Personality Values Human Civ Cultural Values set. We'll be doin' it in the order of the Personality Values on the DF Wiki (I recommend lookin' there for further readin' on this topic an' maybe lookin' at Personality Facets too).

I'll be puttin' a full paragraph as the 'next segment' called 'Putting 'em all Together', so skip t' that if y'wish.

Law: 4: Neutral 'doesn't feel strongly about the law'.

Loyalty: 21: High 'values loyalty'

Family: -7: Neutral 'does not care about family one way or the other'

Friendship: -13: Low 'finds friendship burdensome'

Power: 20: High 'respects power'

Truth: -30: Very Low 'sees lying as an important means to an end'

Cunning: -1: Neutral 'does not really value cunning and guile'

Eloquence: 0: Neutral 'doesn't value eloquence so much'

Fairness: 13: High 'respects fair-dealing and fair-play'

Decorum: -29: Very Low 'sees those that attempt to maintain dignified and proper behavior as vain and offensive'

Tradition: -30: Very Low 'finds the following of tradition foolish and limiting'

Artwork: -18: Low 'finds artwork boring'

Co-operation: 2: Neutral 'doesn't see cooperation as valuable'

Independence: -21: Low 'finds the ideas of independence and freedom somewhat foolish'

Stoicism: -15: Low 'sees no value in holding back complaints and concealing emotions'

Introspection: -3: Neutral 'doesn't really see the value in self-examination'

Self Control: -4: Neutral 'doesn't particularly value self-control'

Tranquility: 29: Very High 'strongly values tranquility and quiet'

Harmony: -9: Neutral 'sees equal parts of harmony and discord as part of life'

Merriment: 7: Neutral 'doesn't really value merrymaking'

Craftsmanship: 3: Neutral 'doesn't particularly care about craftsmanship'

Martial Prowess: 18: High 'values martial prowess'

Skill: 6: Neutral 'doesn't care if others take the time to master skills'

Hard Work: -27: Very Low 'thinks working hard is an abject idiocy'

Sacrifice: 1: Neutral 'doesn't particularly respect sacrifice as a virtue'

Competition: 24: High 'sees competition as reasonably important'

Perseverance: -26: Very Low 'thinks there is something deeply wrong with people that persevere through adversity'

Leisure Time: 2: Neutral 'doesn't think one way or the other about leisure time'

Commerce: -15: Low 'is somewhat put off by trade and commerce'

Romance: 6: Neutral 'doesn't care one way or the other about romance'

Nature: 5: Neutral 'doesn't care about nature one way or another'

Peace: -3: Neutral 'doesn't particularly care between war and peace'

Knowledge: 22: High 'values knowledge'

Putting 'em all Together

Like most in her culture she doesn't feel strongly about the law, values loyalty, does not care about family one way or the other, finds friendship burdensome, respects power, sees lying as an important means to an end, does not really value cunning and guile, doesn't value eloquence so much, respects fair-dealing and fair-play, sees those that attempt to maintain dignified and proper behavior as vain and offensive, finds the following of tradition foolish and limiting, finds artwork boring, doesn't see cooperation as valuable, finds the ideas of independence and freedom somewhat foolish, sees no value in holding back complaints and concealing emotions, doesn't really see the value in self-examination, doesn't particularly value self-control, strongly values tranquility and quiet, sees equal parts of harmony and discord as part of life, doesn't really value merrymaking, doesn't particularly care about craftsmanship, values martial prowess, doesn't care if others take the time to master skills, thinks working hard is an abject idiocy, doesn't particularly respect sacrifice as a virtue, sees competition as reasonably important, thinks there is something deeply wrong with people that persevere through adversity, doesn't think one way or the other about leisure time, is somewhat put off by trade and commerce, doesn't care one way or the other about romance, doesn't care about nature one way or another, doesn't particularly care between war and peace and values knowledge.

So, imagine an entire society of people with about those views. Sure would be interestin', right? At least it'd be quiet. Hahahaa.
