Weird day today, my allergies took over and completely disconnected me from my head. Drove to work listening to some Vampire Weekend songs from OGWAU, thinking about learning the keys on “Connect”. Looking forward to the back to back shows this summer (well, a week apart), handing out stickers, waltzing around GA, driving 2 hours south, 2 hours north.

Back to the open tabs on my work computer (sorry!), it’s a good mix of discogs, rate your music, and a variety of record stores and labels and bandcamp pages and cassette/vinyl rips on youtube. I’ve been balanced between 70s folk rock (Jim Spencer, Jim Sullivan, Peter Galloway, etc) and 90s acid techno/house (particularly Space Wreck/Industry by Man Made). Complete opposites. Not sure how they’re both existing in me at once. I’ve been diving deep into rate your music and Discogs, feeling like I can crawl into its tiny crevices, pinch to zoom in, another flight of stairs into the basement. Today is starting on a different path but will surely find its way back to one of the two.

Started things off with Lite Hits by Sukpatch, found on All Night Flight and listened to on Youtube (two parts). I would’ve loved this in 2021 and I love it now. I believe the vocals are from the lead singer of Kitty Craft (that’s what this rym list told me, very informative). It’s on Bandcamp, so I’ll go ahead and buy it when I get home, though I’ll probably pass on the vinyl reissue this summer. 

Now I’m on Emergency Exits by Saucer, found on the aforementioned Kitty Craft rym list. Harsh in the beginning, softer in the middle, harsh at the end. The distorted guitars add grit to her gentle vocals. I’m into “Cigarette Polly”, “The Bunny”, and “Spoonerisms”. Now onto Jeep Music by Patch, also of Sukpatch and accompanied by vocals from Kitty Craft. Free download on Bandcamp! Not the best quality, but the direct cassette rip adds to the DIY nature of it, so I’m pleased. 

Long lunch spent at urgent care, morale is in the tank. Not in the mood for anything remotely upbeat and vocals are not allowed. Scrolled through the From the Stacks releases page on Bandcamp, Numero Group’s accumulation of stuff that’s not quite deserving of a full blown release. Perhaps that’s unkind as there are some gems there, but I will stand by the fact that not everything needs to be a masterpiece to be great. Currently enjoying Full Court Press by Calvin Keys. Now this is some smooth jazz/Nordstrom Bistro music. Exactly what I need right now.

Listened to two tracks from the new Soda Lite album, Earthbound. Found on New Commute, I appreciate their succinct commentary, not in the mood for longform at the moment! It’s nice, atmospheric. I might be a little too tired for this music right now. /Next day/ I was in fact too tired for this, had to turn it off and take my headphones out. Didn’t listen to much of anything else for the rest of the day, drove in silence after work to the gas station, I was cutting it way too close. Skipped a screening of Mulholland Drive because I was in a bad mood, but turns out I just needed to be productive at home to feel better. Which I did! I played a little bit of How Many More? by Serious Bizness, a record I got on my most recent visit to Papa Jazz in Columbia, before deciding to end the night with the movie Greener Grass. Fuckin’ weird, extremely compelling. Back to chill 70s folk rock for the weekend, gotta embrace this last little bit of a spring breeze before the sweltering humidity kicks in.

i'm so fucking tired of zelenskii, but it's not what you think. since i got a family in harkiv, you can imagine how nerve-wracking this entire ordeal is for me. so to see this man, whose decisions directly affect them and thousands others, having his vouge photoshhots, videocalls with hollywods, receiving an oscar from sean penn and buying a millions-worthy yacht makes me see red.

don't you have something better to do, man? and don't hit me with "well, he needs to unwind too!" because a president's me-time becomes void and null as long as his people die in drows.

Yeah he's always rubbed me the wrong way. Way too interested in getting cozy with celebrities and wearing his stupid, clean "war outfit" than actually fighting the war he acts like he's on the front lines of. And as an American it's funny, because half the celebrities riding his junk every few months were having apoplectic fits every time Bush was spotted at a golf course during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. I guess that was somehow a terrible dereliction of duty but partying with Hollywood celebrities and buying a yacht with mystery money is somehow brave and noble.

Welcome to Harkive 2018

Harkive is an online popular music research project that invites people to tell the tale of How, Where and Why they listen to music on a single day each year. The aim of the project is to capture a snapshot of the way in which we interact with the sounds and technology of today.

On Tuesday 17th July, we hope you will tell Harkive the story of your music listening day. In this quick guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about joining other music fans around the world in adding to the 10,000 stories gathered by the project since it launched in 2013.

Why tell your story?

Millions and millions of people will be listening to music on 17th July, but no two people will listen in precisely the same way or for the same reasons. That makes your story interesting.

You might use certain products, services, formats and technologies that are common to many others. You might spend the day listening to the same radio station as millions of others. You might go to a gig, or hear music in a restaurant, or catch the hint of a song from the window of a passing car. Whatever your experience, or the situations you find yourself in as you listen, your experience will be unique. It is the unique nature of your story that we are trying to capture.

How, Where and Why you listen to music is fascinating – we’d like you to tell us all about it.

How to tell your story

Telling your story is easy, and you can tell it in a variety of ways. Hopefully there is one that suits your habits already, and you won’t need to go too far out of your way to do it.

You can post to social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram and here on Tumblr, simply by adding the #harkive hashtag to your posts throughout the day. Or you can ‘like’ the Harkive Facebook page and post something to our wall. You can post as many times as you like across the day.

If you’d like to take your time and write something a little longer, you can email your story to us, or post it via our online form.

What do Harkive stories look like?

The stories the project receives come in all shapes and sizes, from short tweets to long-form essays. The shortest story in the database has just 4 words, the longest has almost 4,000. If you need some inspiration, have a look at some of the Example stories we’ve gathered from musicians, journalists, academics and others in recent years.

Remember, though: there is no right or wrong way to tell your story. Just tell us, in your own words, about the role that music plays in your day on 17th July.

Have a look around online and get involved in conversations

Many regular Harkive participants comment that one of their favourite things about the day is reading the posts of others, or joining in with conversations with other participants. Some even discover new songs and artists through the project. Have a look on Social Media channels (especially Twitter, where most of the action seems to take place) by searching the #harkive hashtag.

What happens to your contribution?

Harkive is part of ongoing post-doctoral research being undertaken by Craig Hamilton in the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research at Birmingham City University. His research explores the cultural, technological, economic and social factors surrounding popular music consumption in the digital age, and his particular interest is the role digital, data and internet technologies play in the ways we listen. You can read more about that research, and explore the results of Craig’s analysis, by using the new Harkive Data Explorer application. You can find more detailed information about the research ethics of this work here.

As part of Craig’s research there is also a Music Listening Survey. It takes around 5-10 minutes to complete, and you can do this before or after 17th July. If you do not wish to complete the survey, don’t worry: you can still contribute your story on 17th July. If you’ve completed this survey in previous years, please do take another pass at it – it will be interesting to see if things have changed for you.
