Ike & Tina Turner - Proud Mary: The Best Of Ike & Tina Turner
We don't need more compilations. Ike & Tina are great, obviously. Tina Turner's voice goes from sweet to screaming on a dime and it's just amazing. But I don't think there's a need for a compilation. This is a greatest albums list and guess what? These two were more popular for their singles. I figured the Phil Spector Back to Mono was meant to cover for the fact that a lot of artists from the era operated this way. But no we also get a bunch of comps from individual artists. Anyway, fuck Ike Turner and I hope Tina Turner lives forever. Also fuck the haters she's great in Beyond Thunderdome.
Kelis - Kaleidoscope
Kelis is a fine vocalist, but the stars of this album are clearly producers The Neptunes. Soul, R&B, Hip-hop, House, and Funk blend together in some of the punchiest and bubbliest beats I've ever heard. Unfortunately there are some artistic decisions that absolutely baffle me. The intro track was embarrassing as was the hook on Caught Out There, and the lyrics of Mafia and Game Show felt uninspired at best. Thankfully the second half of the album is completely solid so if you can get past a few stumbling blocks it's overall a very good album.
Pixies - Surfer Rosa
I try to keep these reviews relatively brief. As such I'm stuck on this one. Do I talk about the massive influence this album had on 90s rock? Or do I talk about how much I like Black Francis and Kim Deal's vocal delivery? Is it the fact that without Surfer Rosa grunge as we know it probably wouldn't have evolved as it did? Or is it that I like the way the buzzsaw guitars and screaming vocals are mixed in a way that somehow makes them sound subdued? But I'm not really talking about two different things am I? I doubt that I'm getting something different out of this album than Kurt Cobain, PJ Harvey, Billy Corgan, or any of the other musicians that cite it as an influence did. It's influential because it is so fucking good that you can't come away from it unchanged.
Mariah Carey - The Emancipation Of Mimi
Yup this is what a pop album from 05 sounds like.
Aretha Franklin - Young, Gifted and Black
Most artists never manage 18 albums, and if they do it's basically never worth your time. Aretha Franklin isn't most artists. After starting in 61 Aretha Franklin put out roughly 2 albums a year for a decade. But listening to 72s Young, Gifted and Black it's clear that fatigue had not set in. Franklin's voice is one of the most powerful instruments in musical history. Honestly her whole career could have coasted on that fact. But no she puts thought and effort into creating arrangements that are especially good at transforming other people's songs into her own. Her version of The Long and Winding Road is the only one that matters and obviously her cover of Nina Simone's To Be Young, Gifted and Black is legendary.
Radiohead - In Rainbows
In Rainbows was, in my opinion, a return to form after a couple of weaker albums. Not bad albums, just weaker than Ok Computer or Kid A. Anyway In Rainbows takes the continued evolution of alternative experimental electronic rock and adds a really solid injection of psychedelia that rounds the whole thing out nicely. Thom Yorke mopes through a solid ten tracks singing about... uhh, well I have no idea what he's saying most of the time but the vibes are there. Radiohead expresses sadness through vague tone and moods more than direct lyricism.

Recap: Pleasantview Round 5 (Summer)
The romance of Spring certainly went to a few heads in Pleasantview - the suburb is in the midst of quite the baby boom. But now Summer is here, and school is out! Parents are scrambling to sort out childcare, teenagers are reveling in their freedom, and with the sun shining, the mood in the neighbourhood is pretty great.
But are the families as happy as they seem? Or are some on the brink of collapse? What secrets lurk in their hearts?
The round began with newcomers Tiffany Sampson and Kevin Beare getting settled in. They adopted a puppy, got new jobs, and got to know the neighbours.
Then as Tiffany finished her first day of work in the Education career, she learned she was already pregnant!
They had a quick, slightly rushed wedding before the baby arrived.
Baby Harvey was born, but it already looks like she might be expecting again.
The round ended on a happy note, with the couple already nicely established as a family in town with a few friends!
The Dreamer family started out just as well, but things quickly started to deteriorate.
Due to a combination of bad mental health, recurring nightmares and possible haunting, Brandi Broke isn’t in a good place. Her relationship with Darren suffers for it, too.
Meanwhile Cassandra’s marriage with Don is falling apart, and Darren can’t help being sympathetic. Perhaps a little too much so.
Mia Broke, obsessed with the paranormal, gets herself abducted by aliens, much to her mom’s dismay.
She’s also eager to discuss her theories about the spooky sounds in their yard, but Brandi shuts it down.
Mia goes on a date with Benedick Monty, but it’s kind of a mixed bag.
Back home, Mia and Darren eventually talk about the possible hauntings at home. He admits to her seeing Darleen’s ghost, from time to time.
Brandi also opens up to Mia about her father, Skip.
And Mia is vindicated to finally some ghosts herself!
I played the Lotharios next since I was interested in what was going on with Cassandra.
Cassandra and Don’s relationship has had its ups and downs - neither of them has been 100% faithful, but they’re dealing with it. Maybe? Between raising the twins and focusing on their careers there hasn’t been a ton of time for marriage counselling.
Don’s been feeling a bit isolated, recently. Outside of his family and his coworkers, he doesn’t really have a lot of friends. That’s been deliberate, to an extent. The fewer people around him, the fewer temptations to stray outside of the marriage.
For the most part, it’s been working. But a chance meeting with Nina Caliente has him feeling… confused.
The kids are doing fine, the parents not so much.
She’s always in low aspiration, lately, ever since her Dad passed away. It’s been hard getting on her feet since then, and Don going on about needing “me time” doesn’t help. She needs his support right now more than ever! Why doesn’t he get that?
They don’t talk about it, but both of them are feeling very alone, and starting to lose faith in each other...
Meanwhile, the boys age up. Bernado’s a popularity sim and Cassimiro’s knowledge.
Eventually, things in the marriage finally explode and Cassandra tells Don about Darren, trying to get a rise out of him.
Don immediately retaliates by woohooing with Sharon Wirth on a grocery-run.
After a cool-off day, they agree to break things off, and Don moves out.
He moves in, temporarily, with Bella. Who is insistant that he and Cassie try and patch things up!
He’s more interested in exploring new options, though.
Bella is devestated to lose her job as a party guest.
Meanwhile Oliver Goth (Dina and Mortimer’s son) gets his first kiss with Ariel Capp! Later he goes on a date with Tommy Ottomas, too.
At one of Bella’s parties, Cassandra and Don keep things civil, but Cassandra evidently isn’t doing well.
Bella goes on a date with Gilbert Jacquet. It’s not really all that serious between them, and Bella still misses Mortimer dreadfully, but Gilbert is charming and handsome enough to take her mind of her worries.
Things with Bella and Don also seem to be getting a little heavy, and Don concludes he needs to move out before things cross a line. Bella reluctantly agrees, it’s obvious her plan to get him and Cassie back together hasn’t worked
Don moves to Strangetown!
Next up are the Ramaswami family, a nice breath of fresh air after all the drama.
Priya befriends some of the other mothers in town, becoming especially close to Kaylynn.
And baby Ravi gows into maybe the coolest toddler ever?
Sanjay survives a near death experience.
And Priya finds out she’s expecting again!
Divorced once and with the girls having just graduated college, Daniel Pleasant didn’t expect to be engaged again with a kid on the way as he approached retirement age, doing it all over again. He’s far from unhappy about it, though. Mary Sue always had an independent streak, but Kaylynn adores him. Maybe it’s a bit selfish, but it feels so good to be needed.
Kaylynn knows some people in the neighbourhood look down on her, think her naive, call her a homewrecker… that’s fine. If they worked as a cleaner for years and years maybe they’d consider packing it in and settling into an easy life, too. What’s wrong with wanting to be taken care of?
Notably (and much to my horror) during the Pleasant round, Brandi and John start up their affair again.
Kaylynn finally gives birth, to a baby boy they call Jeffery Pleasant, after Daniel’s father. Daniel’s really pleased!
Jennifer’s eager to meet her new nephew. She and Kaylynn get off to a rocky start, but eventually start to bond.
She’s closest friends with Brandi Broke, though. The two have become inseperable, with Brandi visiting all the time.
Daniel invites both of the girls over to meet their little brother, but Angela is the only twin who shows. Whether that’s because they have a better relationship, or because Lilith was just busy is anyone’s guess.
Then it turns out Kaylynn’s pregnant again already?
Kaylynn and Daniel tie the knot!
Nina and Don also reconcile at the wedding.
Kaylynn gives birth to another baby boy, Luke!
And Jeff ages upp!
Daniel ages up, too. It’s finally time for him to retire, soon...
Daniel’s definitely a bit of a dirty old man, but Kaylynn doesn’t seem entirely oblivious to that side of him, and figures as long as she keeps his needs met they should be fine. We’ll see if that holds up.
Then it was time to catch up with the Shoreharts, who moved here form Widespot for a fresh start.
A retired chef, Sandy’s enjoying her retirement a lot more than she ever enjoyed being a stay at home mom. Granted, all this free time has her a little restless, but it’s nothing a bit of time outdoors and excercise can’t fix. She hopes.
They were honestly pretty chill! Rhett’s taken to the whole marriage thing suprisingly well, for a romance sim. Turns out, as long as he’s getting lovin’ on a regular basis he doesn’t really care if it’s with one woman or several. It’s never boring with Sandy, and he intends to keep her as happy as he can for the rest of her days. That’ll show her shit-heel of an ex-husband.
Mostly they just spend a lot of time with family.
Sandy’s very generious with the backrubs, but nothing goes too far.
Mimi is definitely at least a little anxious about her parents’ marriage though, because she spends some of the round reading up on Couple’s Councelling.
Then it’s time for her to age up! She grows into a rather cute romance sim.
Then at the party the house of cards starts to crumble, as Sandy gives her ex-husband Hamilton a kiss, right in front of Mimi and Rocky.
Mimi agrees not to tell her Dad, but isn’t happy. She spends a lot of time out of the house.
With Sandy keeping her indescretion quiet, I’m not sure what they have in store in the future!
Regardless, next are the Ramirez family.
Tessa’s spent a lot of time looking afte rthe baby and she’s sick of it! So she spends some time Downtown with friends.
She later takes Bernardo on a date, although he’s not sure if he likes her as more than a friend. Bernardo likes the idea of falling in love with Tessa, who he’s always admired! But he’s a little hesitant at the same time, especially with his parents’ divorce still being so recent.
Checo has a bit of a wandering eye, but mostly he keeps himself in check.
Checo might be a bit of a flirt, but at least he’s not a hypocrite. When Lisa was dancing with Skye he didn’t even bat an eye. Or maybe he just doesn’t see an old man as much of a threat…
Ugh, God, I forgot this happened
Baby Sofia grew up super cute!
Anyway, that’s all from them!
The Oldies weren’t too eventful, mostly just focused on hobbies!
They did finally meet Mary’Sue’s new partner, which went... poorly.
But they did have a nice meeting with their grandaughter later, and a fun night out!
Then it was the Burbs! John’s recent indescretions with Brandi aside, things seemed to be going well.
At least, until he made out with Coral Oldie :/
Oblivious to thins, Jennifer was starting to trust John again.
They had dinner with Jen’s brother Dan and his new wife...
And Jennifer discovered she was pregnant again!
Lucy headed away for college...
And baby James grew up, leaving the Burb round complete and Pleasantview all done & dusted!

daddy jaehyun
iv.xxii. (a)
You sit on the couch and breastfeed Kiwoo while Geon is over your shoulder. Jaehyun was gone. You didn't know where he was going, but he said that he had to get out of the house. He took Sunoh and Miga with them because they wanted to be with their father. You're a little worried because you knew something had happened in the sauna, but you don't know what.
"Hey, can I sit with you?" Harvey came to you and smiled softly. You nod while trying to handle your babies.
"Can I take the little one from you?" He then asked, pointing to Geon, who was lying over your shoulder.
"Yes, if you like. But take the cloth. Geon spits a little after eating." You smile and lean out a little so Harvey could take your son.
"They are really cute ... all four." Harvey gently stroked Geon's back and looked at him.
"Did you change your mind about children?" You ask with a laugh, but Harvey shook his head.
"No. I wouldn't be a good father." Harvey comes from very difficult family backgrounds and he was always afraid to become like his father.
"I know, I know ..." You look at Kiwoo, who looked up at you with his blue eyes, which have become a bit darker by now.
"And did you find your luck? I mean with Jaehyun." Harvey looked at you seriously and you look up at him.
"Yes. We have been together for almost 10 years and I still feel so much love for him. And our children just made our luck perfect." You smile and look back at Kiwoo, who is still looking at you.
"I'm happy to hear that. Really ... I always wanted you to be happy and I knew I could never give this to you." Harvey sighed and looked down briefly.
"Harvey I ..." You didn't know what to say. Everything was difficult anyway.
"No, I didn't want to put you in an uncomfortable position. I just want us to interact normally again. After all, we've known each other for so long."
"Yes, that sounds good." You smiled and were glad that Harvey was so mature. Most of the time he was never so caught up in emotional issues, but apparently he's grown in that regard. And when Harvey smiled softly, Mia came to you.
"Hey you two." She grinned and sat next to you.
"Mia, what are you doing now?" Harvey said, smiling softly. It felt a little bit like the time when you lived back home, after all, Harvey was part of your family. He had always looked after Mia too.
"I now live at Y/N, help with the children and will soon start my business studies in Seoul." Mia leaned over and stroked Kiwoo's head.
"I am so happy to have a sister with me. That's why I'm glad that she has Xiaojun now." You smile and look calmly at Mia, who was also happy.
"But Sophie is totally cute too. I didn't know you were married." Mia glanced at Harvey, who was still looking at you.
"Yes Sophie ... we just got married quickly. We'll do a bigger wedding later. You should come." He smiled, but you shake your head.
"It sounds great, but Miga goes to school soon and Jaehyun can't leave because of his job that often."
"You can come alone with Mia. Audrey, Emilian and Viktoria are also invited."
"Hmm ... I don't know ... I'll think about it." You don't like the idea so much, you are also attached to your children and almost never want to be away from them.
"Daddy, why don't you eat anything?" Miga was sitting in front of a large ice cream bowl and grinning.
"I'm not hungry," he said, wiping Sunoh's mouth, which was sitting on his lap. He went out with his kids to eat ice cream so he got a little distance from Harvey.
"Daddy, are you mad at us?" Miga's eyes suddenly grew big and sad. Jaehyun immediately felt guilty, he didn't want his children to think that.
"No my princess. Daddy is just tired today." He smiled and Miga nodded understandably. The children continued to eat their ice cream and Jaehyun knew he had to go back because Sunoh got tired and needs his nap. He took Sunoh and Miga by the hand and walked back to the house with them.
"Mummy ..." Sunoh ran into the house and looked for you. He started to cry when he couldn't find you. Audrey came into the hall and met the three.
"Oh Sunoh. Your mummy is up in the bedroom." She leaned down to the boy who was looking at her with wet eyes. He was playing uncertainly with his shirt and he was sobbing.
"Come on Sunoh, we're going up to Mummy," Jaehyun said, taking his hand. The boy nodded and went up the stairs with his father and sister.
"Mummyyyyy ...." Sunoh ran to you as you lay down the twins for a nap.
"Quiet Sunoh. The babies are sleeping," you whisper and take your boy in your arms. He nodded and sobbed in your arms.
"Oh my boy. Are you so tired?" You stroke his head and Sunoh is already struggling to fall asleep.
"Daddy, can I watch TV?" Asked Miga, looking up at her father. Since you were here and the boys were taking their afternoon nap, Miga was always allowed to watch videos on the iPad.
"Yeah, princess," Jaehyun said with a smile and gave her the iPad. You put Sunoh on his pajamas now and it didn't take long for him to fall asleep. Jaehyun looked at Miga when you came to him and looked at him worriedly.
"Hey, can you tell me what happened?" Jaehyun pressed his lips together and said nothing.
"Please Jaehyun. Talk to me." You sighed and were desperate. Jaehyun took his headphones and put them on his daughter. Then you both go to the bathroom and you look expectantly at Jaehyun.
"Harvey is an idiot. How could you be with him?" Jaehyun crossed his arms and looked at you seriously.
"How could you have anything with Suji?" You roll your eyes.
"But you loved Harvey, didn't you? I never loved Suji!" Jaehyun glared at you.
"Jaehyun! What happened in the sauna that you got so angry?" You finally wanted to know more, but Jaehyun found it difficult to say.
"He provokes me. He's sitting there with his big cock and grinning idiotically."
"Please what?"
"I keep thinking that he fucked you with this thing."
"Jaehyun, you're not serious, are you?"
"You enjoyed it, didn't you?"
"Do I have to apologize now that I had good sex before you?"
"So you admit it?"
"STOP JAEHYUN. Or do we want to list all the pretty idols and models that you had slept with?"
"You never had anything to do with them."
"That's a lie. I've seen them. Every time I've worked with a pretty idol, I also wondered if you fucked her."
"You pretend I've slept with hundreds of idols. THAT’S NOT TRUE!"
"But you lived your life and you had good sex too." It went like this between you on and on. At some point you had forgotten how loud you two got. Suddenly you hear a sob not far from you. You two turn around and see Sunoh and Miga standing in the bathroom. They held hands and cried. It broke your heart to see them like this. Both had tears in their eyes and Miga held her little brother's hand tightly.
"Are you getting divorce now?" Asked Miga and several tears ran down her cheeks.
"No my princess." Jaehyun knelt down to her and wiped away her tears. You take Sunoh in your arm who cried in your chest.
"But the parents of my friend Mimi in kindergarten also were fighting, and then her Daddy was gone." She continued sobbing and you look desperately at Jaehyun, who also took Miga in his arms.
"No, my princess. Your Mummy and I would never separate. I love her too much for that." Jaehyun turned to you and smiled gently. You also smile and hope that the topic has now been forgotten.

CRITIC’S CHOICE
April 13, 1963
Directed by Don Weis
Produced by Frank P. Rosenberg for Warner Brothers
Written by Jack Sher, based on the play by Ira Levin
Synopsis ~ Parker Ballantine is a New York theater critic and his wife writes a play that may or may not be very good. Now Parker must either get out of reviewing the play or cause the breakup of his marriage.
PRINCIPAL CAST
Lucille Ball (Angela Ballantine) marks her 80th feature film since coming to Hollywood in 1933. This is her fourth and final film with Bob Hope.
Bob Hope (Parker Ballantine) was born Lesley Townes Hope in England in 1903. During his extensive career (in virtually all forms of media) he received five honorary Academy Awards. He died at the age of 100. In 1945 Desi Arnaz was the orchestra leader on Bob Hope’s NBC radio show. Lucille Ball and Hope made four films together: Sorrowful Jones (1949), Fancy Pants (1950), The Facts of Life (1960), and Critic’s Choice (1963). In between the first two and the second two, he appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E10) in1956. Hope made a cameo appearance in a 1962 episode of "The Lucy Show” that starred Jack Benny. Lucy and Hope appeared together in dozens of television programs, including Ball’s final appearance at the 1989 Oscars.
Marilyn Maxwell (Ivy London) appeared with Bob Hope in “The Colgate Comedy Hour” (1950, 1951, 1953, 1953), The Lemon Drop Kid (1951), Off Limits (1952), “The Bob Hope Show” (1954) and with Lucille Ball in DuBarry Was A Lady (1943), Thousands Cheer (1943), Forever Darling (1956), as well as “Here’s Lucy: Lucy The Co-Ed” (1970).

He was a traveler at the airport when “The Ricardos Go to Japan” (1959). He made a dozen appearances on "The Lucy Show” and a half dozen more on “Here’s Lucy.”
Murray Pollack (Audience Member) was one of the party guest in “Country Club Dance” (ILL S6;E25). Like Monty O'Grady, he was at the airport when “The Ricardos Go to Japan” (1959). He made two appearances on “The Lucy Show” and returned for three episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Paul Power (Audience Member) was seen in two episodes of “I Love Lucy” and two films with Lucille Ball.
Beverly Powers (Girl with Dion) played Mimi Van Tysen in “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20) in 1966. In that episode, she had a gorilla on her arm, not Rip Torn!
Alan Ray (Hotel Doorman) was seen on “I Love Lucy” as the clapstick boy at “Ricky’s Screen Test” (ILL S4;E6), a Brown Derby waiter in “Hollywood at Last” (ILL S4;E16), and a male nurse in “Nursery School” (ILL S5;E9). He made four appearance on “The Lucy Show,” including once as a hotel doorman! In 1950 Ray was also in the film A Woman of Distinction in which Lucille Ball had a cameo.

Hal Smith (Drunk) is probably best known around the Desilu lot for playing Otis the drunk on “The Andy Griffith Show”. He made three appearance on “The Lucy Show” including the role of Mr. Weber in “Main Street U.S.A.” (S5;E17). He did one episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1972.
Norman Stevans (Clerk) was in the audience of “Over The Teacups” during “Ethel’s Birthday” (ILL S4;E8) and at the airport when “The Ricardo’s Go To Japan,” in 1959. He appeared in two episodes of “Here’s Lucy” and in the 1974 Lucille Ball film Mame.

Ralph Volkie (Audience Member) is best remembered for playing John Wayne’s masseuse in “Lucy and John Wayne” (ILL S5;E2) in 1955. As Wayne’s trainer, he also appeared in sixteen films with the Duke.
‘CRITICS’ TRIVIA
Lucille Ball’s costumes for the film were designed by Edith Head. Irma Kusely, Lucille’s long-time hairdresser, did her hair design.
Lucille Ball and Bob Hope break the fourth wall and appear as themselves in the film’s trailer.
Because of poor audience reaction at test screenings, this film sat unreleased for a year before being sent to theaters. The delay did not help, as it received generally unfavorable reviews.
"It is pleasing to look at in its expensive décor, color and scope, ably played by its experienced stars and ingratiating in its quieter insights into a sophisticated marital relationship. So long as it meanders modestly through some above-average repartee, it provides an agreeable way to pass an evening. Instead of leaving well enough alone, unfortunately, the director, Don Weis, has tried to upholster the shaky plot with slapstick and broad burlesque...Both stars, old hands at this sort of thing, go through their paces with benign good humor, but their subtler comic talents remain untapped. At this rate, the critics' popularity seems unlikely to improve." ~ The New York Times
Angela's play opens at the 46th Street Theatre. This is an actual Broadway theatre, though it has since been renamed the Richard Rodgers Theatre and since 2015 has been home to Hamilton. At the time of filming it was host to the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical How To Succeed in Business...Without Really Trying. Lucille Ball was on Broadway just one year earlier at the Alvin (now the Neil Simon) Theatre in Wildcat.
The collage of stylized posters for Broadway plays (The Music Man, Life With Father, Fanny, Gypsy, Camelot) that appeared under the opening credits, were all productions that had (or in the case of Camelot, would later be) filmed by Warner Bros.
Ira Levin's original play had been produced on Broadway in 1960, when it enjoyed modest success under the direction of Otto Preminger. The play starred Henry Fonda in the Bob Hope role of Parker Ballantine, and also featured Georgann Johnson (in Lucille Ball's role).
Angela and Dion fly from New York to Boston in an American Airlines Lockheed Electra, registration number N6102A. By the time the movie was released in 1963, the plane no longer existed - on August 6, 1962 (Lucille Ball's 51st birthday) it was wrecked in a landing accident during a thunderstorm at the Knoxville, Tennessee airport. Fortunately, all aboard the plane survived.
The casting of Marilyn Maxwell as Hope's first wife was a kind of ironic joke, as their long-time affair was well enough known in the industry for her to be often referred to as "the second Mrs. Hope."
The Ballantines were based on renowned theatre critic Walter Kerr and his playwright wife Jean Kerr. As an inside joke, Hope mentions one of her plays, "Mary, Mary."
The film’s music orchestrations are credited to Arthur Morton (inset photo). Not only is Morton Ball’s married name, Arthur Morton was the name of the character played by Richard Crenna who had a crush on Lucy Ricardo in “The Young Fans” (ILL S1;E20)!
The film is mentioned on “What's My Line?” featuring Bob Hope and Lucille Ball on May 5, 1963. Lucy and Bob are on a promotional tour, New York being the eleventh of their 19 cities. They had just come from being on “The Ed Sullivan Show” earlier that evening, also to promote Critic’s Choice.
Lucille Ball mentions the film on “Dinah!” featuring Bob Hope on April 15, 1977.
About Critic’s Choice (1963), it is clear that this was a film Lucy didn’t want to do. Lucy and Hope were obliged to do a 11-theatre promo tour to “sell” the film. Hope calls it their only flop.

HW might walk free and here is why.
Harvey Weinstein’s case might be too weak to convict: Devine
/Miranda Devine/
The trial of Harvey Weinstein has provided ample evidence that he is a grotesque pig lacking empathy for the many women he preyed upon, but probably not enough to prove he should be convicted as a rapist.
Prepare for an acquittal or a deadlock after the jury goes out Tuesday, because anyone who has sat through the trial can see the prosecution has struggled to prove its case.
If Weinstein does walk, it will be a tragedy for his accusers, who at the very least were degraded by their association with him and have suffered brutal courtroom cross-examination.
But it will be a well-overdue check on the power of the #MeToo movement that was spawned by the Weinstein case, and which depends on his guilt.
What started as a reasonable comeuppance for a powerful movie producer who preyed on aspiring actresses went too far when it mutated into a toxic feminist movement designed to demonize all men.
#MeToo has become a tyranny of its own, a crusade to overturn a mythical patriarchy in which women have no agency or power.
Of course, it’s easy to condemn Weinstein, with his grotesque physical appearance, brutish behavior and self-pity.
But “in a criminal trial, proof matters,” Weinstein’s defense lawyer, Donna Rotunno, told the jury. “This is not a popularity contest. But you have to remember that we are not here to criminalize morality.”
Rotunno has been branded a “traitor to her sex” and a “woman of escalating infamy” for defending Weinstein, after less lion-hearted lawyers dropped out, but she has appealed to the “New York City common sense” of the jury.
At least 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual predation, but, in the end, this jury was told to consider the cases of only two.
Jessica Mann, now 34, an aspiring actress from a dairy farm in Washington state, met Weinstein at a Hollywood party when she was 25 and testified that he raped her in 2013 at a hotel in Manhattan.
Yet she continued a relationship with him for several years afterward, during which time she had consensual sex with him, attended Oscar parties as his guest and sent hundreds of affectionate messages, some of which Rotunno read aloud to the court.
In the weeks after the alleged rape, Mann emailed Weinstein to thank him for arranging an audition for a vampire movie: “I appreciate all you do for me, it shows.”
“Miss you big guy,” she wrote six months later.
She asked him to meet her mother in another email: “You can see how good my genes are.”
And four years later, she wrote, “I love you, I always do. But I hate feeling like a booty call. ;)”
Rotunno read out another message in which Mann wrote she was “blowing a super-rich Hollywood producer.”
“This is not the way you would characterize your relationship with your rapist,” said Rotunno.
“She made a choice that she wanted the life that he could potentially provide for her.”
The other accuser before the jury, production assistant Miriam “Mimi” Haleyi, now 42, also continued a consensual relationship with Weinstein after he allegedly forced oral sex on her in 2006
According to evidence presented by Rotunno, Haleyi went on to accept hotel stays, limo rides and flights to Los Angeles and London, and sent Weinstein affectionate messages, including one signed, “lots of love.”
It is hard not to feel sympathy for these women, whose vulnerabilities were exploited by Weinstein.
But that is different from a criminal conviction for rape.
The prosecution case raises the frightening prospect that any man could be found guilty for retrospective rape, years later, over a consensual sexual encounter.
It relies on the “Believe all women” slogan at the center of #MeToo, which only disrupts healthy heterosexual interactions and places every man under suspicion of rape.
As Rotunno told Vanity Fair, “Regret sex is not rape.”
Summing up the defense Thursday, she described the prosecution’s case as an alternate universe in which “women are not responsible for the parties they attend, the men they flirt with, the hotel room invitations, the plane tickets they expect, the jobs they hope to obtain.”
It is no favor to women to pretend they are not responsible for their own choices, including entering into a sexual relationship with a powerful older man who can do them favors in a competitive industry.
To equate those choices with rape is an obscene disservice to genuine victims.
But the pendulum has swung so far toward “believe all women” that it will require courage for those seven men and five women on the jury to come to an unpopular verdict, which will be seen as a referendum on the #MeToo movement.
Don’t expect the activists who banged on pots and screamed “The rapist is you” outside the Lower Manhattan courtroom to accept anything but a conviction.
But even if Weinstein does walk free in New York, he has not escaped punishment.
He faces another trial in Los Angeles — and his reputation and once-mighty career are already in ruins.
Thank you😊❤️❤️❤️❤️

Non-OUAT Whumpers
Most of the whump collected on this blog takes place on the show Once Upon a Time. The Whumpers responsible for these incidents are collected on this blog’s Official Whumpers Page for your amusement.
However, this blog also collects whump from Colin’s other work, as well as humorous “bestings” from real life when appropriate. Those “whumpers” will be collected on this post, also for your amusement ;)
Incidentally, while the Official Whumpers List is listed by character names, this list is organized by the name of the actor/actress playing the role. There’s no reason for this, other than it amuses me.
Amy Huberman
Irish actress. Played Conor’s friend Daisy in The Clinic.
Entirely angsty bestings here, as Daisy is the cause of a lot of Conor’s emotional upheavals throughout his time on the show.
Anthony Hopkins
Academy Award winning actor. Played Father Lucas in The Rite.
All kinds of whump here. Father Lucas brings about angst, delivers lectures, manhandles him, attempts to possess, and even throws Michael Kovak across the room.
Antonia Campbell-Hughes
Irish actress. Played Shelley in Storage 24.
Shelley doesn’t really do much to Mark throughout this film, but near the end, after everything he’s done to his friends... she gives him a sound slap.
Bad Fashion Choices
Let’s be real, it’s mostly just that fucking shirt.
This one also has a lot of Killian Jones bestings, as there was the diving suit, the white tuxedo, the Dark One robe that offended him, that hair bow, and various other questionable fashions in that show. There’s also some lovely fandom contributions of Killian/Colin being bested with bad fashion. And, of course, plenty of that buzz cut and that fucking shirt.
Bathroom Fixtures
Seen in every bathroom in every home around the world.
Usually, bathroom fixtures are useful. Sometimes, not so much.
Bel Powley
English actress. Played Carrie Pilby in the movie of the same name.
Carrie doesn’t really whump Professor Harrison, but near the end of the film, she does bring her father over to his house - and the two of them invade his home, her father punches him in the face, and Carrie mocks him.
Berserkers
A crazy band of murderers found in What Still Remains.
The Berserkers are at war with Peter’s commune in the film, and near the end of it, they attack and annihilate the commune entirely, burning it to the ground.
Bikers
Random ruffians found in 2004′s Love Is the Drug.
LITD’s Peter goes up against some badass biker dudes to defend the guy his sister’s with. It doesn’t go well, and he gets punched in the face. As usual.
Camera Angles
Found in everything, everywhere. Stupid cameras.
Let’s be real, though. It’s mostly just me bitching about leaves.
Cats
Adorable furry creatures. Showed up en masse in The Rite.
“Make sure they don’t come in,” Lucas said. Spoiler: They all got in.
Chris Carmack
American actor. Played Nora’s boyfriend David in The Dust Storm.
Near the end of the film, David confronts Nora and Brennan in a bar and punches Brennan in the face, resulting in a pretty big bruise.
Chris Ellis
American actor. Played Harvey in What Still Remains.
Harvey seems, at first, to be a harmless old man cooking over a campfire in the middle of the day. Unfortunately, his innocent demeanor lures Anna right in - and once she and Peter are close enough, they’re ambushed.
Colin O’Donoghue
I think we all know who this guy is.
This tag’s not for him getting bested... it’s for when HE bests US.
Cops
Police officers. Seen in many films and TV shows.
This tag includes some Once Upon a Time whump, but also has Conor Elliott’s arrest in The Clinic.
Demons
Evil otherworldly beings. Most famously found in The Rite.
This tag covers the demonic goings-on in The Rite, as well as some fandom bestings of Killian Jones being possessed or haunted.
Dorothy Cotter
Irish actress. Played Laura in the short film, The Euthanizer.
Laura is Ben’s beloved girlfriend, who has left him for unstated reasons. Ben is completely heartbroken by the loss, and turns to suicide.
Feels
Seen: Everywhere, in everything.
This tag encompasses all those moments when Colin’s character is overcome by emotion - including when that character is Killian Jones.
Finbar Lynch
Irish actor. Played Terry in 2005′s Proof 2.
The moment is very brief, but Terry does a wonderful job of grabbing Jamie by the lapels and manhandling him.
Frogs
More animals, spotted in 2011′s The Rite, besting Michael Kovak.
You’ve gotta be fucking kidding him.
Gary Lydon
British actor. Played Dr. Patrick Murray on The Clinic.
Patrick Murray was Conor Elliott’s therapist, and his poor handling of Conor (and Conor’s condition) contributed to the emotional breakdown that led to Conor setting himself on fire.
Gabriel Byrne
Well-known Irish actor. Played Carrie’s father in Carrie Pilby.
Carrie’s father invades Professor Harrison’s home and eventually punches him right in the face. In an interview about the film, Colin said, “Who doesn’t want to be punched in the face by Gabriel Byrne?” Indeed.
Giant Alien Monsters
Giant. Alien. Monstrous. Starred in 2011′s Storage 24.
One thing you can say about these things... they have good taste.
Jeff Kober
American actor. Played Zack in What Still Remains.
Zack doesn’t whump Peter at all within the film, but as the main driving force behind Peter’s warped world view and the man who orchestrated the abusive environment Peter grew up in, he is instrumental in the trauma that made Peter into the mal-adjusted psycho he undoubtedly is.
Jennifer Morrison
American actress. Played Emma Swan in Once Upon a Time.
She and Colin like to tease each other at conventions. “By teasing each other, we mean that Jen teases me, is what happens.” We got you, Col.
Josh Dallas
American actor. Played Prince Charming in Once Upon a Time.
O’Dallas is love. O’Dallas is life.
Keith McErlean
Irish actor. Played Dr. Adam in Season 5 of The Clinic.
Dr. Adam was Daisy’s boyfriend in Season 5. Conor and Dr. Adam didn’t get along very well, causing much angst... and eventually a blow-up that resulted in some physical aggression.
Kristen Gutoskie
Canadian actress. Played Nora in 2016′s The Dust Storm.
Brennan’s feelings for Nora (and Nora’s rather unhealthy ways of dealing with her own emotions) cause a lot of conflict and angst throughout the film. She also inflicts physical harm on Brennan near the end of the film, when she burns his arm with a cigarette.
Lana Parrilla
American actress. Played Regina Mills in Once Upon a Time.
Only adorable bestings need apply <3
Lee Arenberg’s Acting Choices
American actor. Played Grumpy in Once Upon a Time.
What was he even doing, tho? And why? And what?
Lesley Conroy
Irish actress. Played Mandy in the 2003 short film, Call Girl.
Mandy comes to Brendan’s house, she makes him nervous, they have sex, she argues with him, she pushes him... umm, yadda yadda yadda?
Lulu Antariksa
American actress. Played Anna in What Still Remains.
Anna spends more of this film getting whumped by Peter than whumping him, to be honest, but when she does get her whump in... it’s the fatal kind.
Marta Gastini
Italian actress. Played Rosaria in 2011′s The Rite.
Rosaria is a young woman who is possessed by a demon. Her behavior during a routine exorcism unnerves Michael in the beginning, but eventually escalates to an all-out physical attack where she tries to strangle him.
Mimi Rogers
American actress. Played Judith in What Still Remains.
Aside from a few awkward hugs and exchanges in the film, Judith doesn’t actually whump Peter on screen. So why is she here? The film hints at long-term sexual and emotional abuse that Peter suffered at the hands of Judith and her husband Zack - abuse that surely shaped Peter into the psycho he is, and a dynamic that adds depth to those awkward encounters.
Noel Clarke
British actor. Played Charlie in Storage 24.
Charlie is Mark’s best friend when the film begins, though he’s arguably less so as the film progresses and Charlie finds out Mark’s been sleeping with his girl and is the reason said girl broke up with him. There’s an accidental nut-crunch in the beginning, a fight when the betrayal is discovered, and a punch right in the kisser later on.
Others
Everyone and Anyone NOT listed here or on the Once Whumpers list.
That means everyone. Even you, if you play your cards right.
Pay Phones
Apparently, they still had them in Ireland in 2009.
In The Euthanizer, Ben has a bit of trouble with one of these.
Robert Carlyle
Scottish actor. Played Rumplestiltskin in Once Upon a Time.
Full honesty - this is mostly just endless references to that blooper.
Rose Reynolds
English actress. Played Alice Jones on Once Upon a Time.
Rose and Colin are amazing together <3 Their bestings are the best!
Rutger Hauer
Dutch actor. Played Michael Kovak’s father, Istvan, in The Rite.
There’s not really much besting shown in the film, but the man made his son Michael help embalm his own mother. If that’s not a fucking besting, I really don’t know what would be.
Sarah Bolger
Irish actress. Played Princess Mary in The Tudors.
You likely recognize this actress’s name from her role in Once Upon a Time as Princess Aurora, but what lands her on this list is her role as Mary in The Tudors - where she allegedly steps on Duke Phillip’s foot.
The Crew
Assorted crew members of assorted projects, including OUAT.
...because everyone likes to tease Colin. It’s an international pastime!
Tobias Jelinek
American actor. Played Phillip in What Still Remains.
The dystopian world of this film lends itself well to random whumpings from complete strangers. Phillip is one of two men who Anna and Peter run into on their journey who attempt to rob them.
Tommy O’Neill
Irish actor. Played the Euthanizer in the short film of the same name.
The Euthanizer is originally hired by Ben to help him hang himself... but when Ben changes his mind and decides to live, things turn even whumpier!
This list was last updated on February 5, 2019.

Weinstein’s rape trial shifts gears after intense testimony

NEW YORK —
After a day of intense testimony at Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial, prosecutors are expected to shift gears Thursday with a slate of ancillary witnesses.
Two aspiring actresses testified Wednesday that Weinstein preyed on their vulnerabilities while pushing the notion that sex could lead to film roles.
Tarale Wulff choked back tears as she testified Weinstein raped her at his New York City apartment in 2005 during what was supposed to be a film audition.
The casting director for that film is expected to testify on Thursday, along with the manager of the Manhattan hot spot where Wulff worked as a cocktail waitress and met Weinstein.
She alleges that on one occasion there before the alleged rape, Weinstein masturbated in front of her.
Dawn Dunning testified Wednesday that in 2004, Weinstein put his hand up her skirt and fondled her genitals during a meeting in his hotel suite about her fledgling acting career.
At another meeting, Dunning said, Weinstein tried trading movie roles for sex, claiming the lewd offer was the kind of thing that happened all the time in the film business.
Dunning’s fiancé at the time is expected to testify Thursday.
Wulff and Dunning’s experiences with Weinstein are not part of the underlying criminal charges against him, but their testimony could be a factor in whether he goes to prison at the end of his landmark #MeToo-era trial.
Prosecutors called them as witnesses under a state law that allows testimony about so-called “prior bad acts,” enabling them to explore things like motive, opportunity, intent and a common scheme or plan.
Weinstein, 67, is charged with forcibly performing oral sex on Mimi Haleyi, at the time a “Project Runway” production assistant, in 2006 and raping another aspiring actress in 2013. That woman could testify later this week.
Weinstein has insisted any sexual encounters were consensual.
Jurors are also expected to hear Thursday about Weinstein’s efforts to keep his alleged behavior secret, including his use of a private intelligence company as reporters from The New York Times and The New Yorker pursued stories about him in 2017.
The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they have been victims of sexual assault, unless they agree to be named or gone public with their stories, as Haleyi, Wulff and Dunning have done.

Getting To Know...
MAGUIRE.
London based artist MAGUIRE has released her debut EP Préludes. The stirring five track collection includes three brand new songs, opening with the lead track ‘Strangers’. The EP follows the release of two singles this year, which have led critics to draw comparisons between MAGUIRE and the likes of PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke.
The classically trained multi-instrumentalist Gillian Maguire has been touring since the age of 16, and recently supported Ry X on his UK tour dates. As well as making her solo music, she is one half of the ambient arthouse electronic project Awkward Moments along with DJ/Producer Mimi Xu. The collective debuted their most recent project at Houghton Festival in 2018, and have recently been announced to play again at the event in 2019.
We chatted to MAGUIRE about Préludes, her influences and more. Read the full Q&A below.
How would you describe your sound? Who or what are your biggest influences?
“I would say it’s introspective but expansive at the same time. Melancholic yet euphoric – ‘melanphoric' is a term I coined with my bassist. I seem to work in a lot of opposites, and that’s the same when it comes to the scope of influences I draw from. I grew up playing classical piano and was learning a lot of Debussy whilst writing the EP – hence the nod to his Préludes in the title. More contemporary influences would have to be Thom Yorke, Feist, Joni Mitchell, Conor O’Brien from Villagers…the list goes on. I guess I subconsciously take inspiration from everything that I consume, I read a lot of literature and poetry, and that has seeped into my lyrics. Writers like Virginia Woolf, Milton, Teju Cole, and even artists like Agnes Martin have provided a lot of inspiration.”
What made you want to follow a career in music?
“To be honest I didn’t always know that music is what I wanted to do. Music was always my escape, my hobby, and something I did to get away from the pressures of everyday life. Growing up I trained classically in both piano and violin, but I never saw myself as fitting into the classical world, so as time has gone on I’ve found my own collaborators and my own place within music. I see now that you don’t have to fit into any mould and I just know that I’ll aways continue to play music in some form or other, as I’ve been doing it since the age of 3 and can’t imagine life without it. Being in the studio and on stage are the places where I feel most at home, so I feel like there’s no other path I could follow.”
You've just released your debut EP Preludes. What is the record about? What do you hope listeners will take away from it?
“It’s really a reflection of stepping into a new chapter of my life where I’m finding my feet as a musician in my own right. I’m laying myself bare and inviting the listener to do the same and embrace their vulnerability. The title of the EP itself is tentative to some extent; it’s very much the beginning of a process and a return to purpose. It explores themes of loneliness, and isolation in the wake of a breakup, but also more generally in a time of utter disconnection and disengagement due to technology. By searching for authenticity and truth I guess I’m asking the listener to do the same, and reconnect to themselves and to the people around them.”
What kind of things have you learned during the process of making your first EP?
“Most importantly I’ve learnt to follow my gut and my instinct. It’s taken me a long time to find my voice and you can only do that once you ignore all the projections of who you want to be or think you should be, and be true to yourself. Turn off all the voices in your head and follow what comes naturally.”
Finally, what's next for Maguire?
“I’m continuing to write and collaborate. I’m in the studio a lot with Liam Howe who I adore working with. I’m also finishing an album with DJ / Producer Mimi Xu who I have an ambient electronic project with called Awkward Moments. We’re playing at Houghton Festival in August and working on a multimedia show for that.”
Preludes is out now.

And tonight the curtain closes on my final high school play
It’s wild to think about that. That deciding to audition for my school’s production of Cinderella about 9 years ago would wind up opening the doors to something so important to me
This may be my last show in high school, but by no means do I intend to make it my last show. This isn’t the end.
And the show must go on.

8 Tips from Real Working Moms on How to Strike the Balance
There's no denying that working moms are masters at multitasking. But, between changing diapers, setting up playdates and juggling conference calls, today's career women are struggling to live up to unrealistic expectations. Not only are they carpooling, cooking dinner and creating Pinterest-worthy birthday parties. They're also spending countless hours at the office climbing their way up the corporate ladder.
“Expectations are implied through social media like Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest, as well as TV shows, movies, commercials and billboards,” says Lorena Arguello, a marriage and family therapist in Claremont, California. “Sadly, we instantly compare ourselves to each other's ability to have it all. Yet we only see what the mom is choosing to post, not the everyday ups and downs.”
We recently chatted with working moms from all walks of life – authors, executives and accountants – about their favorite tips for striking that elusive work-life balance.
Empower. “I used to feel so guilty because I wasn't available to help out at a pizza party or to pick my kids up. They ride the bus. But someone told me, 'Listen, we need each other. Some moms get the field trip to the UN organized because they've worked there for 20 years. Other moms create magical entryways for the gala because they have more time to create from home. Love thy fellow mother is truly my number one rule.” – Kristen Dollard, 41, Brand Director at Yoga Journal, mom to Avery, 10, and Luke, 5
Stay Positive. “I de-friend those friends who drain me with their negative energy. Brutally honest, I know. But you only have so many hours and minutes in each day. Who you choose to surround yourself with really matters. Choose positive!” – Robyn O'Brien, 45, New York Times bestselling author of The Unhealthy Truth, mom to Lexi, 17, Colin, 16, John, 14, and Tory, 12
Disconnect. “I set the boundary to focus separately on family and work. My inbox is never empty but I make sure my computer and iPad are away so I'm not tempted to look at them. Once Will goes to sleep, I hop back on email to handle anything that came in since I left or to get a jump on things for the next day, but I cap that at 90 minutes tops. It's hard to disconnect from work, but it keeps me sane.” – Jillian Roscoe, 38, Senior Vice President Talent at ID Public Relations, mom to Will, 9 months
House Help. “Don't drown yourself in chores. You must enlist help from your husband, babysitters and even kids to keep up with the housework. You are balancing a lot but chores are something everyone can do!” – Colleen Keilers, 36, Digital Marketing Manager for The Mom Project, mom to Gerald, 4, Noah, 3, and Maddock, 11 months
Order Online. “Delivery apps! Google Express and Amazon Prime Now are my main two. It's key, especially if I'm out of town. I'll cook before I leave but I like to keep the fridge packed. My oldest is so picky I can always rely on getting some rotisserie chicken and chicken tenders delivered, especially if I'm gone for more than two days.” – Mimi Dakar Berry, 40, Vice President & Creative Director for Sonya Dakar Skincare, mom to Jacob, 5, and Eli, 3
Make Choices. “As a working mom of two young boys, I sometimes feel like there is a birthday party every weekend. I have two systems in place to help this stay fun. First, I buy presents in bulk. Secondly, I alternate birthday parties with my husband. If he has work to do, I will take the kids to the party and vice versa.” – Desi Bartlett, 45, Celebrity Trainer and Founder of Mothers Into Living Fit, mom to Cruz, 8, and Rocket, 3
Plan Ahead. “I try to work late at night to make up for future lost time. My schedule is not your typical 9 to 5 so I can work around that and plan accordingly. I do have a planner I live by that has everything from what is pending at work to my grocery shopping list. That helps me stay sane!” – Melina Harvey-Read, 33, Senior Accountant for The Mom Project, mom to Lucas, 6, and Louis, 4
Play Dates. “My favorite way to balance it all is to have lunch outside with the kids during the week. It refreshes me because it's a break from work where I can see my sons. We talk about what they did that morning or what park we will go to before dinner. They go back to a sitter after lunch, but I let her have a little breather while I hang with them.” – Nicolette Martin, 34, HR Coordinator, mom to Christopher, 4, and Vincent, 1
The experts agree. Arguello suggests taking a time-out to find your own happy place. “Balance is something we're always striving towards and it can truly feel elusive,” she says. “Factors may include self-care, children, spouse, friends and work. It is definitely our tendency to put self-care last, but caring for ourselves is what makes us a better mother, wife, friend and employee.”
