Haunted Stull Cemetery in Kansas-Van Life 2016~RH Jones Page
Haunted Stull Cemetery in Kansas-Van Life 2016~RH Jones Page
To see all of my categories of posts go to the Home Page Before I get into how I ended up here I spent over an hour trying to find the original article about how the story of this cemetery got started. The story of it being haunted. I no longer have the original article I wrote a few years ago. The story of it being haunted got started by a student at the University of Kansas writing for her…

Note
I have always found this lyric hauntingly beautiful; I picture a small man in an old fashioned nightgown with a candle holder wandering through an ancient library (metaphor for brain) looking for what he’s lost.
I seem to recognize your face
Haunting, familiar yet
I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me
.
.
.
Bonus points if you know the song and band without googling
My biggest regret is not going to see Pearl Jam in ‘91 at a small music festival in Lawrence, KS. It was right after Ten came out and they weren’t that big yet.

Supernatural hot takes, from someone who just finished Season 8, and is also from Kansas.
- Charlie, it is pronounced Sa-line-A not sa-Lean or sa-Lean-a, for Christ sake.
-At the same time, Salina is not in Shawnee county. Topeka is, however.
- There are cons in Wichita people. Give it some love.
- Going back to previous seasons, Wichita is not small. It's metro population is like 400k or something. They have a AA baseball team and a minor league hockey team! They do not have a Freddy Fasbear wanna be on the edge of town off a gravel road or some shit. Please, there's an Urban Air out there and an inflatable water park off the highway.
-Also, Lawrence is a college town. It's not only gonna be much bigger and more modern than the podunk they show in Seasons 1 and 5, but it's also gonna be fairly 🌈🌟liberal🌟🌈.
-Even back in the seventies if John Winchester was originally from Lawrence, he'd be fairly liberal. Which is why, based on his characterization, I'd say he's never been in Lawrence, aside from to spend time with Mary (I'm only on Season 9 episode 2, if I'm missing things, don't kill me).
-This feeds into my head canon that Sam and Dean are very different politically. Like Dean's pretty red neck gun ho and so is Sam, but deep down those two years at Stanford really got the blue blood flowing (further evidenced by the Native American vs Indian exchange in S8E21 or whatever).
- (But to be fair, in history teachers refer to Native Americans as Native Americans unless we're talking Columbus or quoting historical documenst)
-I'd imagine the first few years back with Dean would've been very fun with discussing politics.
-They both, in my opinion, would be against gun restrictions simply because they are hunters. And those restrictions would make it harder to find weapons.
-Back to horrible portrayals of Kansas, we don't have naturally occurring pine trees. If you're gonna act like you're in Kansas, those pines better be on a Christmas tree farm in Novermber or December.
-And you also couldn't have even bothered to google some shit about Kansas like "what county is x city in" or whatever?
-Also, in the last episode of season 5, I don't buy that BS about driving two days to see a KU game. Neither Sam or Dean had mentioned ever being college ball fans, then suddenly that gets brought up, like 🤨?? Personal opinion, that was smashed in there to make it seem more Kansas-ey.
-Also that Kansas City episode... just...gaah...!!!
-Also, the Men of Letters bunker in Lebanon? First, Lebanon is super tiny, so I guess good job there. Second, everyone's just gonna assume that's a fricking tornado shelter because it's a concrete door in the side of a hill, and in Kansas, there are tornados. But if you're going for hiding in plain sight, I do applaud you on that one.
-Quick diversion to Missouri: where in the hell do they think -other than the Missouri River, which doesn't appear to be the case- someone's gonna keep a boat chained up at the dock? Why was Kevin's boat desert in Missouri? Was it just for proximity to Lebanon?
-Also there is literally a haunted house in Atchison, KS called the Sally/Scratch House and the story sounds like an episode of Supernatural why did we not do this people😠? Why?!?!
-In conclusion: I love you Sam and Dean, but you're writers coulda done a better job on Kansa-fying you.
-PS neither of them spent significant amounts of time in Kansas so I don't even buy the "everyman from Kansas" BS for a second.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk y'all.

Lau’s Local Hauntings
Allegedly Haunted Places in Kansas
You won’t find Kansas on any “most haunted states” list. In my opinion, it should be. Here are 3 haunted places in Kansas.
1. The Sallie House - Atchison, KS
If you’ve ever seen a list of the most haunted houses in the US, you’ll know this house. As much as I love the paranormal, you won’t find me anywhere near this horrid place.
This home was built in the 1800s. It is said to house the spirit of a little girl named Sallie. There are multiple theories on who Sallie is and why she occupies the residence. There’s a lot to read about this formidable place.
I recommend “The Sallie House Haunting: A True Story” by Debra Lyn Pickman, a former resident of the house.
2. The Eldridge Hotel - Lawrence, KS
I grew up hearing tell of this mysterious Eldridge Hotel. In fact, in second grade, my class took a field trip there. I was instantly fascinated with the idea of the ghosts that resided within the walls of the old inn. In 1856 the former Free State Hotel was burned to the ground by a pro-slavery group. Once again, in 1863, the hotel was attacked and burned by the infamous Quantrill and his raiders. Very little of the original structure was left. Colonel Eldridge rebuilt the hotel and used what was left of it to create what is now known as the Eldridge Hotel. Room 506 is thought to contain a “spirit portal” because it is the only room to have been made from the original structure. The motto of the hotel is “from ashes to immortality.” Take that as you will...
3. The Former Lawrence Community Theatre - Lawrence, KS
“In 1987, during a dress rehearsal for the spy drama “Pack of Lies,” a photo was snapped that would cement the theater as one of Lawrence’s premier spectral hot spots. The photo clearly shows the translucent figure of a woman standing between two actors, a woman not fitting the description of anyone in the venue at the time. The photographer, Jack Riegle, insists that the image has not been intentionally altered, pointing out it was taken well before the era of Photoshop.” - The Lawrence Journal World.
It is said that this experience triggered 23 years' worth of haunting happenings at the LCT. I have yet to find more information on this.
— Lau
I wrote this because I’m hoping to connect with more people like me. People who like the spooky, unexplainable things in this world. If you want more of these local haunting guides or even something more in-depth make sure to like and reblog.

Album Review: Josh Ritter - See Here, I Have Built You a Mansion (Rare and Unreleased)
Consolidating leftovers from the Gathering sessions, tracks written for others, a Dire Straits number and a couple of live recordings, Josh Ritter made himself a short LP or a long EP.
At eight tracks and 30 minutes, See Here, I Have Built You a Mansion (Rare and Unreleased) is as diverse as its origins suggest. It takes its title from “Haunt,” a folksy Gathering outtake that finds Ritter ruminating: I know I’m not your closest companion/but I am the ghost that you haunt.
“Waiting on You” channels the Band in “Ophelia” mode; “Time is Wasting” is a straight “Graceland” knockoff for which Paul Simon deserves a co-write; “Brothers in Arms” is a rootsy take recorded at soundcheck; and “Be of Good Heart,” originally written for Joan Baez, is a Cat Stevens-inspired, strings-and-guitar “Wild World” sequel that finds Ritter reluctantly accepting the end of a relationship.
But I know that what we had, I’ve never had before/so if you really gotta go, be of good heart evermore, he sings.
The album ends with a live recording of “Lawrence, Ks,” a gospel-blues taped in its namesake city ensuring Mansion goes out with a literal roar (of the crowd).
Grade card: Josh Ritter - See Here, I Have Built You a Mansion (Rare and Unreleased) - B

Up until now, Josh has managed to hang with his Street crowd, but they’re in danger, and so is Austria, the girl Josh recently fell for. The group finds themselves joining forces with previously considered enemies who also now find themselves in danger.
Deeply compassionate and full of twists, Altered Helix captures the struggle of polarized people that must work together for the greater good.

Excerpt:
As I walk through the hallway to the living room, it’s disturbingly silent.  I don’t hear my mother’s fingers brilliantly strumming piano keys. The Silver Clouds Chasing the Moon by Lang Lang, music sheets are strewn chaotically about the room. I close my eyes and focus on my mother’s energy. A vision of her on the bench in the garden under the pergola comes to mind.
I leap the stepping-stones, skipping every other. Blue hydrangeas and orange daffodils blur by me. As I approach, I notice the yellow roses are in full blossom, their smell fresh as the tide rolling in. My mother’s holding a picture in her hands. When she looks up, I see tear streaks on her cheeks. I sit down and put an arm around her. She’s holding the last photo we took as a family. My eyes zero in on a male, mirror image of myself, my father. I was fourteen then; now I’m seventeen and graduated early. I wish he could’ve been there to see it. Mother should be holding a photo of my graduation day with all of us in it, smiling.
I squeeze her shoulder as my throat constricts in pain. Without looking up, I can feel my mother’s eyes turn to me. I close my eyes and place my wrists on my knees. I begin playing the piece thrown from the stand in our living room by heart, moving my fingers to the rhythm and placing them where the notes should be. She squeezes my shoulder in return.
Walking to the house, she stops and points at the tire swing, offering an aching smile. I hold her hand as the visualization takes me. My father’s pushing me at the age of four, and I feel like I’m on one of the roller coasters we drive by on Route 435. One of the old ones with only a handlebar for safety, no seatbelts. At the top, my stomach floats up, and the view down becomes daunting. The velocity forces me to squeal. I can still picture his smile seeing me enjoy the ride. In the excitement, I let go to raise my hands in glee. I still remember the way his face turned from elation to horror. He moved faster than I could imagine and caught me before I met my imminent doom.

Texas Doom Crushers
DESTROYER OF LIGHT
Unleash Chamber of Horrors!
~By Stephanie V. Cantu~
Tumblr media
This summer, DESTROYER OF LIGHT released a doom masterpiece, capturing an atmosphere of cold dungeon dwellings that moan of sorrowful riffs and vocal passion. ‘Chamber of Horrors’ (2017 - Heavy Friends Records) successfully reaps raw emotion and is dark in tone, lyrical content, and musical temperament. The cover artwork by Adam Burke perfectly sets the atmosphere for the record’s journey into torment and terror.
Tumblr media
I would especially recommend any fans of OM, Yob, and High On Fire to check out this album and give it a good listen. The Austin, Texas band has taken on a natural evolution of sound, a leap in wisdom and mastery, showing the artistic intelligence as it has instinctively progressed since their 2012 debut. As if being revealed fresh from the Veil, the new LP exudes mystery and ethereal qualities that remind me of occult gatherings and tribal sacrifice. Seven tracks clock in at 45 minutes, with the opening track beginning our hell-sleigh ride into the dark descent of the Chamber of Horrors.
WHISPERS INTO THE THRESHOLD
Chamber of Horrors by Destroyer of Light
The album introduction blends theatrics and instrumental tension in true doom metal fashion. The mounting pressure and slow climb of the guitar and drums sets the mournful fate that is to befall. Clanging chains that oppress your limbs rattle about, promising no salvation as sharp Whispers Into The Threshold speak evil incantations into your ear.
INTO THE SMOKE
Chamber of Horrors by Destroyer of Light
A riff born in Iommi’s graveyard breaks the clouds of mist at your ankles as you step Into The Smoke. Enter hypnosis, with sludge vox reminiscent of Mike IX Williams from Eyehategod, as rhythmic drone progressions rehash everything we love about traditional doom metal song structure. When the singing aspect of frontman Steve Colca's vocal performance comes to light, we hear an introspective sorrow that is quite distinct from the torment of the sludgey verses. We find here a soulful voice taking on qualities of Middle Eastern influence, containing tones similar to mantra chanting. The guitar leads are awesome on this one, too, even jamming through the vocal verses. Destroyer of Light is not afraid to experiment musically, while still keeping very true to proper song structure and development.
youtube
THE VIRGIN
Chamber of Horrors by Destroyer of Light
Incense vibes dominate this track, bringing us into prayer for the soul of The Virgin that is to be placed upon the altar. Sacrificial rites and hooded robes are the occasion, and if you have a flaming torch at hand it would do quite well. I particularly enjoy the angry vocal outbursts that contrast effectively with the soothing singing sections. This type of delivery reminds me of King Diamond when he does alternate expressions of different characters, always keeping things thematic. Songs like this construct a pathway for visionary journeys to take place through lyrical storytelling.
In this case, we’re led into the crypt for a sacrifice, and we hear twin harmonies of agony from both Steve Colca and doom vocalist Suzy Bravo of Witchcryer. The combination of male and female vox on this one adds a majestic value to the cinematic nature of this track. We hear the cries of the virgin intensify in torment as the ritual progresses. Heavy doom and witch sacrifices bring the blood, making this record a winner already, just three tracks in.
There is a spiritual ring to this one, creating an atmosphere conducive to ancient meditation and stoner groove. Destroyer of Light keeps it heavy and super tradish, making an honorary ode to doom metal, while still remaining fresh. Can’t stress enough the perfect alchemy that balances these new tracks. Destroyer of Light demos prowess and musical chemistry in producing soundscapes that evoke emotion and transport you to their realm.
TWILIGHT PROCESSION
Chamber of Horrors by Destroyer of Light
We have here a complimentary groove of rhythm and lead guitar trade-offs, a sort of slow funeral transition resembled by this melancholic guitar segue. After the death of the virgin in the previous track, we allow the heaviness to sink in with this soothing, bluesy Twilight Procession.
LUXCRUSHER
Chamber of Horrors by Destroyer of Light
This has to be my favorite song on the record. Steve Colca shows his versatile prowess in vocal delivery on this trademark Destroyer of Light banger. There’s a unique flair to the vocals, with an underlying primordial rage seeping through the verses. At times, it can almost sound like the singing is in some cryptic, ancient language. The stoner mantra and incense vibes return, furthering the meditative groove we heard earlier on the album. Destroyer of Light brings down the Eye of Ra in this LuxCrusher and desert vibes go arguably further when we enter subtle Egyptian territory on the five-string at certain key moments.
We’re given steady, hypnotic rhythm guitar breakdowns interwoven with electric leads, drum fills, and sonic distortion as the track unravels. The bass brings a distinct depth and richness that complements the thick, heavy atmosphere of sound. I particularly enjoy the lyrical writing on this one. The words betray a certain wisdom that comes from an intimate knowledge of these otherworldly dimensions.
Midnight worship at the shrine Sonic ritual slowing time Eyes behind the altar gaze You're pulled into an altered haze
PRISONER OF ETERNITY
Chamber of Horrors by Destroyer of Light
Before us is an ode to those ancient ways of mysterious alchemy. A potion of immortality has claimed our frontman, who stands before us as a Prisoner of Eternity. Centuries pass us by in this Destroyer of Light track, as we hear the words of a sorrowful doomed fate.
Is there a way to die? Centuries pass me by, empires rising, falling All who I loved are dead; I hear the voices calling Oh god, just let me die, can't stand eternal waiting
The drums take spotlight in this song, with every cymbal clash and snare hit adding a sort of aggression. The guitars sing in harmony, as a well-composed orchestra of doom takes over. Every instrument adds a masterful varnish as it chimes in, setting this band apart in musical refinement. There is vibrato in the guitars that adds such a wicked appeal, triggering a palpable spine tingle as it creeps its way up your back. We also get a primo axe solo towards the end of the track, just before the finishing vocals lay us down to die. All in all, there is no band that compares to the perfect fusion of stoner and doom that Destroyer of Light conjures.
BURIED ALIVE
Chamber of Horrors by Destroyer of Light
A slow doom crusher closes the record, imbuing wisdom upon our fragile minds as we faintly cling to life...in the Chamber of Horrors. The opening verses move us steadily along before we become Buried Alive into a grave of heavy sound. Bow before the Altar of Damnation and rebuke your righteousness, as you realize the Earth will soon be your tomb. Haunting lyrics promise no salvation for our end as the record moves into completion:
You dread of dying but you’re the living dead
Stop wasting time Just kill yourself No need to live You’re no messiah
God’s not your friend Until the end You're all alone Buried alive
We hear some of the most vicious vocalizations of the album on this track, characterized by Steve's monstrous, low-growling incantations. The song ends with the sounds of a dungeon door falling heavier upon our fates.
Destroyer of Light is:
Steve Colca (guitar, vocals) Keegan Kjeldsen (guitar) Kelly "Penny" Turner (drums)
Chamber of Horrors was mixed by Matt Meli at Orb Recording Studios in Austin and mastered by James Plotkin.

I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to witness this band’s magic several times, as they tour very often. Their stage performance is an Orange amp worship ritual and a séance of frequencies. Destroyer of Light just completed a 2017 summer tour run with Goya that went through the Southern Bible Belt and Midwestern United States, making a pit stop at the Electric Funeral Fest in Denver.

You can catch Destroyer of Light on the road with DUEL in just a matter of weeks, leading up to the Stoned Meadow of Doom Fest this fall:

Word Count: 1,723
Warnings: None too much. Frustrated Dean.... about to be pissed Dean.... yeah. None too much though.
A/N: You guys. I’m super excited to be continuing this series and at the moment it looks like it’s going to be around 6-7 parts. Maybe more by the time I finish it! I’ve decided to post new chapters on Mondays. :) I read through this a few times, but didn’t have anyone else edit it so if there are any errors I apologize! I’m super excited for you guys to read the coming parts :)
Missed out? Here’s Part One
Tumblr media
(gif not mine)
“I need to buy a one way ticket, please,” you manage through your tears as you hand your credit card over to the teller behind the window.
“Where to, miss?”
“Anywhere but here.” The teller smiles as he hands you your card and ticket.
After leaving the Winchesters you had secretly kept in contact with Sam. He’d been one of your best friends growing up and you couldn’t bear the thought of cutting him out completely. You’d shared with him your frustrations about Dean and how it was breaking your heart watching him self-destruct. He understood, and asked that even if you didn’t talk to Dean that you at least keep in contact with him every few months, or however long you felt was necessary.
You ended up keeping pretty consistent contact with him by calling every other week. Sam always looked forward to your calls because he felt he could always talk to you about anything. You were such an incredible listener and always seemed to know a way to help him, even if it was just listening to him rant about how Dean was still in that hole of his.
You had eventually found a job waitressing at a diner in some podunk town in Arkansas, wondering what the hell you were going to do. One day in your one room apartment, you were on the phone with Sam, and he was helping you figure out a new career for you so you wouldn’t have to wait tables forever. The two of you had thrown some half-assed ideas around, not really taking any of them seriously (A brain surgeon? A judge for the federal courts?) That’s when Sam mentioned counseling. “You always have been so good at listening to me and helping me with my problems. Maybe it could be a good career for you… helping people like that. Maybe open a side practice for hunters? The life is really hard on people. Having a professional to help might not be a bad idea.”
“Sam, you really think getting paid to listen to people talk would be a good job for me?” You thought about it; you could have your normal practice and help everyday people, but on the side offer services for those who were in the life and looking for some relief from the pain. It actually sounded kind of perfect.
“Yeah, I really think you’d be awesome at it. Hey, I gotta run. Just, think about it okay? Talk soon.”
“Bye, Sam. Talk soon”
The more you thought about it, the more appealing it sounded. With the desire to help people settled in your heart, you’d gotten your counseling degree online (specializing in PTSD) and four years later you were in the process loading your stuff to move to Lawrence, KS, because a friend of Sam’s owed him a favor and got you in on an open practice downtown.
Present Day
Dean’s POV
Dean pads into the library with a beer in each hand, handing one to Sam as he reaches the table. “Hey. Any luck? We’ve been sitting for a couple of days and I’m getting antsy,” he smirks dryly.
He skims back through the information on the screen. “Yeah, actually I think I found something. Significant others are being killed by the other.. No apparent break ins… killer claiming they were somewhere else during the killing… sounds like a shapeshifter to me.”
“Yeah, anything new to it we haven’t seen before?” He questions as he takes a sip of beer.
“Nope. There have been four vics. We should probably head out today if we’re going to get there in time to help, though.”
“Sounds good. Leave in ten?” Dean starts heading back to his room to grab his bag when he hears Sam behind me.
“Yeah, it’s bit of a drive to Lawrence.” So the hunt was back in Lawrence. Shrugging his shoulders he places his hand on his door and pushes open the door.
“Going back to Lawrence? Sounds good Sammy!” he tosses over his shoulder as he enters his room to pack.
Reader’s POV
Settling into Lawrence has been quite the adjustment. You’ve made friends with the other counselors in your building and one of them has actually invited you to her house this weekend for a BBQ. Living a civilian life is something you never thought you would have, or even want for that matter, and having it in your grasp so suddenly is almost alien. But helping civilians with their issues, as well as hunters has been so rewarding. You wouldn’t trade this for anything.
But. The hunter in you is very aware that there’s a possible shapeshifter running loose in Lawrence and you’re first instinct was to text Sam and let him know. If anyone could make everything better it’s the Winchesters. At least you hoped they would come.
You are locking up your office for the night, conversing with the new receptionist Abby. She’d only been there a few short weeks but the two of you get along really well and you already think of her as a friend.
“... I just hope I can get Paul to agree to it,” Abby finished, smiling widely.
You feel your phone buzz in your hand. Looking at your screen, your heart leaps as you see a text from Sam: ‘We’re on our way. Be there tomorrow night.’  “Yeah, I totally get it Abby. Good luck with everything, and I’ll see you tomorrow! Don’t forget to lock the front door when you leave.”
Smiling to yourself you look at Sam’s text again. It had been years since you’d seen the two brothers. But you’d left for a good reason and Dean was in a very dark place when you walked out of that motel room. The elder Winchester will always hold your heart. He just doesn’t know it, and watching him nosedive like that was too much for you to handle. Sam had always been your best friend though. He had kept you in the loop on how Dean was doing and other happenings in their lives, and also helped you get this job.
With the opportunity presented, you can’t resist texting back: ‘Sounds good. How’s Dean? Does he know I live here yet?’
The reply quicker than before, your phone buzzes as you get into your car: ‘Not yet. I feel like that’s not my information to give out. Either way, you know I support you 100%. Any chance we could meet up? I miss my sister! :)’
You smile widely as you read his reply, his request to see you after so long reminding you that it wasn’t just Dean you had left and that you missed Sam just as much.
‘Sure! How about lunch at a place around the corner from my office at some point? Just text me when.’
‘Sounds good, Y/n. You know I love you, stay safe okay? See you soon.’
You can’t believe that after four years you finally get to see Sam again. You just wish that Dean wouldn’t be mad if he found out. You don’t want him to hate you for avoiding him all this time, so you decide to just keep it to yourself for now.
The Next Day
You’re filing some paperwork in your office during a break in clients when your phone buzzes.
‘Hey, Dean and I are doing some questioning this morning. We’ll probably split up to cover more ground. Want to meet up for lunch after I finish?’
You respond quickly. ‘Of course! I’m buying. :)’
‘Oh, so you’re wearing the pants in this relationship now?’
With a giggle you text back, ‘Of course, Sammy! Haven’t I always? ;)    But seriously. Let me buy because I want to pay you back for helping me get this job. I owe you!’
‘Whatever, weirdo. See you at 12:30.’
‘See you soon!’
Your lunch period finally rolls around. “Hey, Abby. I’m meeting an old friend for lunch. I’ll be back as soon as I can. I don’t think I have an appointment until two, but if someone shows up, please reschedule them. I’m not sure how long this meeting will take.”
“Okay, Y/n,” she replies with a smirk and a wink. “Don’t you worry. I’ll make sure your schedule stays clear.”
You roll your eyes in response and quip back, “It’s not like that! He’s practically my twin. We were raised together.”
“Well in THAT case, have a wonderful lunch, Y/n.” She smiles brightly as you exit the office and into the noonday sun.
Dean’s POV
“Okay, thank you, ma’am. You have a wonderful day now.” Dean walks back out to Baby, pulls open her door and climbs in.
His stomach growls as he pulls away from the curb, and he mumbles to himself, “man, I think I’m gonna hit up someplace and grab some food before I head back to the motel.”
Seeing a cafe, he pulls into a parking spot and gets out, glancing into the diner through the window, noticing that Sam apparently had the same idea. He can see Sam through the glass sitting with a y/h/c woman, laughing and enjoying what looked to be a good conversation. ‘Good for him,’ he thinks to himself, ‘Sammy deserves something good.’
Not wanting to interrupt, Dean walks in and immediately finds a place at the bar and sits down, flagging down a waitress so he can order. After he orders he glances over his shoulder to peek at Sam and smiles to himself, happy that Sam found a girl. ‘Hell, maybe the kid will actually get laid this time around.’
Turning back around, he goes to take a sip of his drink when he hears it. A sound that has haunted his thoughts and dreams for over four years. His body freezes and his eyes go wide. ‘It can’t be. She took off four years ago,’ he frantically thinks to himself. Then he hears it again. Your laugh was a sound that he had missed since the day she left. Trying to figure out where she is at Dean once again turns around, suddenly regretting his decision. You’re sitting with none other than Sam. Dean’s blood boils. He then realizes that Sam must have been in contact with you the entire time because your meeting doesn’t seem like a chance meeting at a cafe.
Livid, Dean leaves his chair and stalks over to the table where you and Sam are sitting. Sam looks up from your face and the color drains from his as his eyes widen. “Oh… Um. Hey, Dean.”

POLIÇA announce new album & share first single "Driving"
LP 'When We Stay Alive' due Jan 31st via Memphis Industries. UK tour next Feb! Poliça return with their new album 'When We Stay Alive', which is set for release January 31st via Memphis Industries. Today the band are sharing the first single & video from the album, "Driving".  When Poliça’s Channy Leaneagh fell off her roof while clearing ice in early 2018, she smashed her L1 vertebrae and battered her spine, leaving her in a brace with limited mobility for months. Yet Poliça’s fourth album, 'When We Stay Alive', is not about one debilitating accident. It’s about the redemptive power of rewriting your story in order to heal, and reclaiming your identity as a result. With a video directed by Isaac Gale, Leaneagh explains the meaning behind the first single "Driving" as she says "Laying in bed, as I healed from a 10 foot fall of carelessness with my life, I would dream of running in green grass and tears would pour from my eyes. “Running in the tall tear grass; imagine wanting life and the want remains.” That is a feeling to hold onto; that life is worth living even when all the towers are crumbling and this goes beyond my own little accident but the world around me. Following the crone into the sinking ship and having the chance to return without a shadow. Drive on, Drive on. A second chance you won’t forget”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djlZf1J0wqI While recovering, Leaneagh’s doctor told her to focus not only on physical healing, but to meditate on the mental act of healing as well – working to erase the anger, regrets, and fear she felt about her fall. To do so, he suggested she rewrite the story she told herself about what happened on February 28th. Left alone with her thoughts and her back fully braced, Leaneagh would visualize herself slipping and falling not onto cement, but instead onto a cloud, landing safely before breaking into a sprint over snow melting to reveal tall blades of green grass. As she felt the positive effects of this mental exercise, she set about doing the same for other injuries and pains that she gripped onto from her past. Prior to Leaneagh’s accident, she had been setting music aside as she raised her children and worked to make ends meet as a nursing assistant. Now in the still silence of healing, she found that a multitude of feelings were becoming very loud. Leaneagh realized her self-identity had become attached to her experiences of physical and mental trauma, and she began to consider what it would be like to live without the past as a burden. “I felt there were many things I could look at and say, ‘This happened to me but I’m okay now. It’s not happening anymore and I got the care I needed for it. Now it’s time to rewrite the story I tell about myself and to myself,’" she explains. While half of 'When We Stay Alive' was written before the fall, and half afterwards, the tracks meld together in a coherent and redemptive sonic whole. Those written before the fall relay ideas with a more heightened sense of anxiety and distress: the rousing “Forget Me Now” interrogates what makes two people bring out the worst in each other, while on the soulful “Steady,” Leaneagh struggles with the sudden pressure of becoming the head of her immediate family after her parents moved away. “TATA” was inspired by the challenge of keeping a cool head in the face of tense community meetings where anger continues to rise against Northern Metals, a north Minneapolis company under fire for pollution issues. Inspired by the power found in her healing process, on the second batch of songs Leaneagh tried a slightly different approach, working to reevaluate her past, difficult personal experiences and bring in a sense of insight, strength, and light that perhaps wasn’t there at the time. The stirring “Feel Life” captures Leaneagh’s process of recasting pain as an alarm to live and see beyond what we lack. She takes back her sense of self on the haunting “Be Again,”a song recorded as she relearned to sing while wearing a brace. “For me this song is a meditation to myself,” Leaneagh explains. “To come back from the disassociation I’ve lived with most of my life.” “Blood Moon” sees her examining how keeping this sort of guard up can prove more precariously isolating than protective. “I can look back and see how music has always been here for me to be loud, say what I feel and ask for what I need in these songs I write,” she says. “I always find my courage again on the stage – that is where I feel alive, and for that I am eternally grateful for music and the people that I make it with.” 'When We Stay Alive' possesses a new confidence in its sound, reflected in its fierce, determined songs and anchored by the heavy synths and punctuating beats of Poliça co-founder and producer Ryan Olson. Over the last several years Olson and Leaneagh have widely collaborated with musicians from all over the world: both with Bon Iver, and Leaneagh individually with Boys Noize, Lane 8, Sasha, Leftfield, and Daniel Wohl; Olson with Swamp Dogg in addition to countless musicians from the 37d03d collective. As a result, 'When We Stay Alive' features one of the largest musical casts of any Poliça record to date. To create the album, Olson brought his favorite collaborators into his studio for all-night sessions. He’d then send Leaneagh the files to write lyrics to while recovering at home, which she’d record alone or with engineer Alex Proctor. Drummers Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu colored the songs with a new approach – drastically changing the rhythmic dynamic from previous efforts by creating an indistinguishable hybrid of live and electronic instrumentation--and bassist Chris Bierden provided a melody-laden low-end as well as more layered backing vocals than ever before. On Poliça’s first three albums, Leaneagh focused on restructuring the world and her relationships within it. On 'When We Stay Alive', she realises the power in restructuring her inner self. The album’s title references the idea of moving forward through life – our experiences, both good and bad – and what happens next with the strength we find. “I had been living unconsciously in past trauma,” Leaneagh says. “I don’t want to deny something happened – this is not about repression – it’s about taking the power back from the past, holding the power in the present, and creating a new story for myself.” See Poliça live: 11/10 - Chicago, IL - Empty Bottle  12/10 - Milwaukee, WI - Flannel Fest 23/11 - Eau Claire, WI - Jampf Theater 26/11-27/11 - Minneapolis, MN - 7th St Entry 7/2 - Bristol, UK - Thekla 8/2 - Manchester, UK - Gorilla 10/2 - Glasgow, UK - St. Lukes 11/2 - London, UK - Village Underground 12/2 -  Brighton, UK - Concorde 2 14/2 - Paris, France - La Maroquinerie 15/2 -  Brussels, Belgium - Botanique/Orangerie 16/2 - Frankfurt, Germany - Zoom 18/2 - Cologne, Germany - Artheatre 19/2 - Hamburg, Germany - Gruenspan 21/2 - Oslo, Sweden - John Dee 22/2 - Stockholm, Sweden - Slaktkyrkan 24/2 - Copenhagen, Denmark - Little Vega 25/2 - Berlin, Germany - Columbia Theatre 27/2 - Warsaw, Poland - Hydrozagadka 28/2 - Vienna, Austria - WUK 29/2 - Munich, Germany - Hansa 39 1/3 - Milan, Italy - Santeria 3/3 - Barcelona, Spain - La Nau 4/3 - Madrid, Spain - Caracol 19/3 - Madison, WI - High Noon Saloon 20/3 - Chicago, IL - Thalia Hall 21/3 - Detroit, MI - Deluxx Fluxx 23/3 - Toronto, OH - Horeshoe Tavern 24/3 - Montreal, QB - Bar Le Ritz 25/3  - Boston, MA - Brighton Music Hall 27/3 - New York City, NY - Webster Hall 28/3 - Philadephia, PA - Union Transfer 29/3 - Washington, D.C. - 9:30 Club 31/3 - Columbus, OH - The Basement 1/4 - St. Louis, MO - Off Broadway 2/4 - Maquoketa, IA - Codfish Hollow Barn 10/4 - Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue 16/4 - Seattle, WA - Neptune Theatre 17/4 - Vancouver, BC - Venue 18/4 - Portland, OR - Wonder Ballroom 20/4 - Sacramento, CA - Harlow’s  21/4 - San Francisco, CA - The Fillmore 22/4 - Los Angeles, CA - Teragram Ballroom 24/4 - Phoenix, AZ - Crescent Ballroom 25/4 - Albuquerque, NM - Sister 27/4 - Austin, TX - Scoot Inn 28/4 - Dallas, TX - Deep Ellum Art Co 29/4 - Oklahoma City, OK - 89th St 30/4 - Lawrence, KS - The Bottleneck 1/5 - Omaha, NE - Waiting Room  2/5 - Des Moines, IA - Vaudeville Mews (Tickets on sale on Friday 11th October) Read the full article
