Bruce thought that was the end of it. That was not.

Hours after the interaction, he took a break to hang out with John on the beach. Normally, Bruce would surf around this time, but he had skipped some of that with fair frequency to spend time and try to relax with his brother.

"You looked freaked out," John mumbled as Bruce sat next to him.

"You can't even see me. Your eyes are closed."

"I'm right, yeah?"

Bruce sighed.

"What happened?"

"This old guy was in the lobby, looking for someone. He was either looking for a criminal or is the criminal. I don't know which is worse."

"Maybe he's a private contractor."

"Huh?"

"Private Investigator, P.I."

"If he is, he's not very good at it."

"If you want, when he comes back, I could have a talk with him."

"If you could get him to respond."

"Huh?"

"All he did was grumble, could barely understand the guy."

John sat up a little. "What do you mean?"

John was on his feet - er - foot faster than Bruce had ever seen him move. Standing straight and leaning against the chair he was once sitting in. He tried to let it go but the quick movement had hindered his balance further. "Sergeant. Sir," John replied, sharply. He was as stuff as a board.

"At ease," the man grumbled.

It was the growly guy.

John barely relaxed.

"Shit, kid. I thought I told you not to get shot."

"Pretty sure it was an explosion, sir."

"Pretty sure?"

"And as I recall, you told me to take care of my team. I did."

"I'm sure," the man hummed. "It is good to see you alive, Dory."

John blinked, almost surprised but he relaxed a bit more and smiled, lightly. "You too Pete. Uh... here, I mean. Not that I thought you died. And I'm going to shut up now. I guess aside from... why exactly are you here?"

"I heard what happened. Retire for five minutes and ya get your leg blown off!"

"It was a little longer than five seconds, GP," John replied, calmly.

"Better question, why are you in this sandy dump?"

German Eurofighters Make Record-Breaking Flight With Help From Private Aerial Refueling Company

Three of the German fighters were airborne for more than 10 hours during a flight between Japan and Hawaii with the help of Metrea aerial refueling company.

Three German Eurofighter EF2000s have completed a record-breaking endurance flight for the multirole fighter. Remaining in the air for a total of 10 hours 31 minutes, the trio of combat aircraft flew from Japan to Hawaii today, supported by aerial refueling tankers that included KC-135 Stratotankers operated by private aerospace firm Metrea, a contractor-owned and operated aerial refueling business that recently acquired of 14 KC-135s from the French Air and Space Force.

Three German Eurofighter EF2000s have completed a record-breaking endurance flight for the multirole fighter. Remaining in the air for a total of 10 hours 31 minutes, the trio of combat aircraft flew from Japan to Hawaii today, supported by aerial refueling tankers that included KC-135 Stratotankers operated by private aerospace firm Metrea, a contractor-owned and operated aerial refueling business that recently acquired 14 additional KC-135s from the French Air and Space Force.

The long-distance flight, part of the Pacific Skies exercise, which you can read more about here, began with the three Eurofighters taking off from Chitose Air Base in Hokkaido, Japan — where they had been taking part in the Nippon Skies 24 drill — at 9:02 a.m. local time.

Multiple refuelings were required to get the aircraft to Hawaii, including tankers flying from Guam, according to the official account from the Luftwaffe.

While eight refuelings were planned, the fourth scheduled refueling wasn’t required, with sufficient fuel already having been delivered by the first tanker. The sixth refueling rendezvous was also not required, due to a good tailwind.

“Never before has a Eurofighter been in the air for longer than this,” the Luftwaffe live-blogged, as the mission came to its conclusion. “After 10 hours and 31 minutes, the fighter jet touched down at Hickam Air Force Base in Pearl Harbor at 12:33 a.m. local time. Naturally, we toasted this with a Guinness.”

Now they are in Hawaii, the three German Eurofighters will take part in this year’s Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) international maritime warfare exercise alongside ships from the German Navy, and ships and aircraft from other nations.

Reportedly, the previous longest-duration Eurofighter mission involved an eight-hour and 36-minute flight by U.K. Royal Air Force Typhoons, when they were engaged in operations against Islamic State in the Middle East, on September 23, 2017.

It’s unclear how many tankers were involved in supporting the latest Luftwaffe mission, although at least one was provided by Metrea. We have also reached out to the company for more information. A video published by the Luftwaffe shows the Eurofighter flown by the detachment leader taking on fuel from one of Metrea’s KC-135s, using the probe-and-drogue method.

Metrea’s Jon “Ty” Thomas, head of the company’s Air and Space Group, did provide The War Zone with the following congratulatory statement about its Luftwaffe clients:

“We are proud to support our partners in the German Air Force as they executed this complex movement from Japan to Hawaii. 10.5 hours is a new record for the Eurofighter. Long flights over the Pacific are never simple, with few divert options and challenging weather. Ausgezeichnet, Luftwaffe! The German Air Force did an excellent job. I’m equally proud of our team at Metrea, who prepared and executed this mission with excellence. We look forward to more support for the German Air Force as part of Pacific Skies 2024.”

While the duration of the mission itself is an impressive achievement, it’s just as notable that it was enabled, at least in part, by contractor-owned and operated aerial refueling assets.

The mission comes in the same month that Metrea announced it was to dramatically expand its business with the purchase of 14 KC-135 tankers from the French Air and Space Force.

Transfer of ownership of the KC-135FR tankers to Metrea took place on June 26, according to a company press release, and the company said it planned to have the first of these aircraft flying under its banner “within weeks.”

Metrea currently operates four KC-135Rs it previously acquired from the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

With the French tankers now added, Metrea’s tanker fleet is by some margin the largest in private hands — in fact, it owns more aerial refueling aircraft than all but four air forces worldwide.

Providing refueling support to German Eurofighters underlines the thinking behind Metrea’s business model.

Earlier this month, “Ty” Thomas told The War Zone that the KC-135 had been “very deliberately chosen… as our platform of choice.”

Thomas continued: “From the perspective of a receiver, whether it’s a U.S. military receiver, or a NATO or an… otherwise allied receiver aircraft, if they find themselves in a position where they need help from the United States… and it includes help in terms of air refueling, what is the most likely tanker that’s going to pull out there in front of their receiver? It’s gonna be a KC-135. Why? Because the vast majority of tankers in the USAF inventory still remain KC-135s. And will even for probably the next 10 years or so.”

For Metrea, supporting the Luftwaffe’s long-distance flight is just the latest in a series of milestones.

These include the first use of a contractor-owned and operated tanker to refuel an aircraft via boom, the first commercial aerial refueling of any U.S. Air Force aircraft, and the first-ever use of a private tanker to refuel Air Force tactical combat jets (A-10 Warthogs) in April, June, and October 2023, respectively.

Nevertheless, as is so often the case with supporting tanker assets, it will be the German Eurofighters and their pilots and maintainers that win the plaudits for today’s record-breaking flight.

Of course, that is hardly undeserved, especially as the mission puts a spotlight on the German Armed Forces’ increasing focus on the Asia-Pacific theater, a reality that’s now reflected across several of Europe’s NATO nations.

Once again though, today’s long-distance flight reinforces the old adage, “nobody kicks ass without tanker gas,” and it’s increasingly the case that those tankers are being provided by private contractors as well as air forces.

Water based Latex Popular for residential use because of the ease of application and ability to adhere to most substrates. These can be painted on and are suitable for situations where gaps / voids are very small and movement is minimal. Latex is can be prone to shrinkage and can pull away from the substrate creating gaps, allowing water to penetrate. You will often find water based latex seals in freshwater such as Lake Ladoga or Baikal.

Acrylic These are UV stable making them suitable for exterior applications, and are not prone to shrinkage. Acrylics can be difficult to apply and cannot accommodate significant movement. Contrary to popular belief, acrylic seals don't actually eat crabs!

Butyl Adheres well to a broad variety of substrates but can be hard to apply due to their stringier consistency. They have poor resistance to abrasion and struggle to accommodate movements that introduce shearing forces. They are not suitable for demanding building applications. You can find them across all of the islands of Hawaii, but don't get close because they're endangered!

Polysulfide Excellent flexibility even at low temperatures with little shrinkage or UV degradation, and can be used for underwater applications. Polysulfides are more expensive than similar sealants and have a tendency to have higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Though, a life expectancy of 10 to 20 years does compensate for the price somewhat. When most people think of seals, these arctic animals with their fuzzy white babies are in the top three!

Silicone Has excellent thermal resistance, good dynamic movement capability and good adhesion. They can be easily vandalised and tend to collect dirt. For certain substrates (such as stone), staining may also be an issue, in some cases making the use of primers a necessity. As weather proofing and air sealing applications silicones can be used structurally e.g. for bonding glass or metal to frames. Silicones are generally the most expensive but quality silicones have very good durability performance. These seals are often seen along the shores of La Jolla beach.

Polyisobutylenes Have similar properties to natural rubber but with improved durability, good resistance to chemical attack, and have very low permeability. These are commonly used as the primary seal for insulating glazing units (IGU) as they are capable of resisting the transmission of vapour and gases. The products are normally factory applied, rather than site applied. You can find Polyisobutylene seals all over the world, and they are the origin of Selkies!

Polyurethane Adhere well to the majority of different surfaces with little substrate preparation, and are generally the go-to choice for contractors. They have excellent resilience to abrasion and shear forces as well as having strong adhesion and movement capability. When male seals of this type reach maturity they gain a scent similar to gasoline! In fact, Ponsuke is a polyurethane seal!

No singular seal is universally superior or inferior to another. Some are simply better at certain applications than others are due to their innate physical and chemical properties. But we all have our favorites!

You’re six months pregnant when Charlie 1 turns up at your door with a bottle of top shelf bourbon and a gleam in his eye. It’s an echo of the past, of a time before you and Joe got together.

It’s been over eighteen months since you last laid eyes on him, and you already know exactly how this is going to play out. Charlie’s going to turn around and disappear into the night, never to be seen again. You have nothing to offer him, you’re six months pregnant with another man’s baby and honestly, you’re exhausted.

“How about you let an old friend come in and we can talk about how this happened?” He said pointing at your baby bump.

It’s a curve ball, one that you aren’t expecting. Charlie’s involvement in your life has been limited to post mission fucking, something he is very good at. He’s a passionate lover, dedicated and skilful but there isn’t usually much follow up. You’d grabbed a meal a couple of times, drinks the last time he was in Hawaii. He was fun to be around, but he was usually gone by the time the morning rolled around.

This transition has you intrigued, and if you’re honest being behind a desk has you bored out of your mind. At least with Charlie you know he has some wild stories.

“Sure.” You say opening up the door. “Why don’t you come in?”

Charlie is full of surprises.

One of those surprises is that he can cook, you discover this because the first thing he does is head into your kitchen. It’s not an unusual course of action, there’s a running joke at Pearl that he’s rarely seen without a snack in his hand. However, when he starts pulling out the veggies and other items from the fridge, you realise the plan is to actually cook a meal. You try to protest but he gives you a look as he starts to slice a red bell pepper that tells you not to argue.

“We both need to eat.” He says as he cuts into the vegetable. “And at least this way I know you’re getting something healthy in you.”

It’s not as odd as it seems, having another man cooking in your kitchen. Your partner Kai comes over once week and cooks a slew of meals for you to reheat because he knows you’re exhausted after work. His father Wally, owns a restaurant and has turned up on more than one occasion when Kai’s been too caught up in a case to make sure you’re fed. That’s the nature of your ohana, they express love through acts of service.

You reach over and snag a piece of chopped red pepper before popping it into your mouth. Charlie tilts his head to look at you and you see something in his eyes, something you don’t think you’ve seen before.

“So you and Joe…” He says gesturing at the baby bump. “How long’s that been going on?”

“Around eighteen months.” You tell him as he pushes more of the sliced pepper towards you. You pick up another piece before crunching it between your teeth.

“After the thing with the safe houses in Mexico?” He asks, his pacing slowing as he dissects a carrot.

You know what he’s really asking. How long after us did it happen? You’re not sure why it matters but it seems to.

“Why are you here Charlie?” You ask him, tilting your head so you can read his expression. “I mean really? You could have just turned around and left when you found out I was pregnant, but you decided to stay, to cook for me. That’s never been us.”

“What if I wanted it to be?” Charlie asks you, setting the knife down on the chopping board. “What if I realised I messed up back in Mexico?”

“Charlie…”

He presses his palms flat upon the work surface before he lets out a sigh.

“Do you remember what I told you that night?” He asks you.

You fall silent and he knows that you do.

You were tangled up in his sheets, his cock buried deep inside of you as he holds you on the precipice of climax, his thumb ghosting over your flushed cheek.

“Charlemagne. My real name is Charlemagne.”

It’s the only real piece of personal information he’d revealed about himself, and it heightens the intimacy. You clench around him, the ecstasy flooding your system as he whispers against your lips.

“I want to hear you say it when you come.”

His voice interrupts the memory, drawing you back to the present.

“You are the only person who knows who I am.” He tells you; his eyes meet yours and you see the weight of that admission, how much it costs him.

Charlie doesn’t trust easy and that night he had taken a step, a huge step because the truth was, he wanted more with you. That’s why he came here tonight, after eighteen months trying to forget you, he’d decided it was time to put his cards down on the table. Only things had changed and now he’s in your kitchen, halfway through preparing a meal because for a moment he wanted a glimpse into the life he could have had, the life that Joe does have.

Only Joe’s not here.

Charlie gets the impression that Joe isn’t here a lot.

“Aren’t you tired of doing this alone?” He asks you, his gaze lowering to the baby that resides inside of you.

He can see he’s struck a nerve, it’s in the way you tense your jaw as you turn your head away.

“Joe’s not here.” Charlie says quietly. “But I am, maybe we should talk about that.”

14. where do you get your inspiration?

All over! I get some atmospheric inspiration from places I've been (there is an IRL doohm rock reference from mercaleb, as you know), tidbits and themes from life experiences I want to explore from various angles, themes from canon that leave room for more exploration, idle daydreams, whatever other media I'm watching and go "hmmm what if I put a blorbo in that situation". Sometimes it's escapism and sometimes it's reflection and sometimes it's both. Other creators inspire me (like you!) with beautiful writing and art that makes a thriving fandom ecosystem. I've written snippets for art and drawn art for others' writing, circle of life, etc. I love great art prompts from followers when I'm doing doodles (thank you to everyone who has ever sent one!). Sometimes my inspiration for any creation is just "hehe wouldn't it be SO stupid if I just-" and then I do. Highly recommend.

19. the most interesting topic you've researched for a fic

It's gotta be everything volcanically related for Volcaleb. All the materials I watched and read for that were interesting, whether or not they made a reference in the fic. I watched videos of scientists who simulated lava flows with their own materials melted in a massive drum & poured down concrete slopes. Lots of folks hiking around active lava flows in a variety of heat gear, taking samples. Drone footage over active fantastical eruptions. Stumbled on a really unfortunate series of AI images of "people eating lava" (do not recommend). Timelapse footage of slow-moving pahoehoe which has this fascinating chrome color to the cooling surface in some lights. There was one 20min Youtube video about contractors in Hawaii talking about how it was dangerous to move construction equipment in some areas of the islands because you could unexpectedly have a big hollow chamber somewhere under you at any time and the weight of the machinery could collapse the whole thing. I watched the whole thing and used none of it lol. I learned about long-term land use recommendations as official documents in areas where geological variables are at play - this actually did get a mention! Anyway, volcanoes and lava are cool (heh).

BIOGRAPHY

Arthur's always been a part of a big, loving family. His parents met while they were both in the military and his dad turned into a civilian contractor while his mom decided to become a house wife. The oldest of three, Arthur joked that he was the ruggrat wrangler even if he loved his brother and sister with all his heart. Besides, who else was going to sit on his surf board while he rode the big waves?

It was a disappointment when his dad got a new job in Maryland, forcing the family to vacate their beautiful home of Hawaii, but Arthur kept a stiff upper lip, not wanting to make things even harder on his folks. Though his old man made pretty good money, college just wasn't in the cards for Arthur. School was never really his thing. Instead he worked odd jobs until he was 21, and then applied for a bartender gig at Ottobar. To so much as breathe in that stale, piss and beer coated air was a dream for any aspiring punk artist. Anyone that really knew Arthur was always surprised by his taste in music, given his upbeat personality. Those that didn't know him were equally as surprised by his personality.

Through connections at the bar Arthur was able to land a few shows for him and his friends, their garage punk band decent for what it was. They kept like that for two years, not thinking of anything beyond their next set. So it took Arthur by surprise one night when after a particularly vibrant concert a guy in a suit walked up to him, handed him a business card, and offered to help him become a professional bassist. If he was being honest with himself, Arthur never considered being a musician full time. He just liked to vibe with his friends, drink some beer, flirt with some groupies. But his friends and family pushed him to try for it. Afterall, what did he have to lose?

In a whirlwind of auditions and paperwork, Arthur somehow found himself being saddled up with some scrawny kid named Briana. He didn't really get it, she seemed like your standard grunge chick, until she sang. At that moment he swore to himself that he would do everything in his power to help her get her voice out in the world. Over the years band members came and went, but Arthur always stuck by Briana's side, her one constant. When her mental health started to decline, Arthur was there for her. In the manic 3 am flurry of writing lyrics and rambling nothingness, he sat with her until well past dawn, ever patient, ever loving.

When things only seemed to get worse, it was Arthur who suggested to Briana that she visit home. That getting some closure may help fight off some of her demons. He sent her off with a big hug and a promise that he was only one call away. Except she never called. Arthur tried not to worry, wanting to give her the space she may need to deal with estranged family. But after a year enough was enough, and he decided it was time to check up on his Baby Doll.

A woman accused with her husband of living in Hawaii under the stolen identities of dead babies will remain behind bars pending their trial, a U.S. magistrate judge ruled Wednesday.

According to prosecutors, Walter Glenn Primrose and Gwynn Darle Morrison are the real names of the couple who have been fraudulently living for decades under the stolen identities of Bobby Edward Fort and Julie Lyn Montague. Prosecutors say Primrose spent more than 20 years in the Coast Guard as Bobby Fort, where he obtained secret-level security clearance. After retiring in 2016, he used the secret clearance for a job as a U.S. defense contractor, prosecutors said.

There is no indication in court documents why the couple in 1987 assumed the identities of deceased children, who would have been more than a decade younger than them.

Previous rulings have kept them detained.              

At a hearing Wednesday asking a judge to release the wife, she identified herself as "Lyn Montague."

"I understand the court's concern - the allegation is my client has used a false and fraudulent name for almost her entire life and we cannot verify who she is," her attorney Megan Kau said.

Kau said she is not accused of committing a crime using an allegedly stolen identity.

As Kau's client was led out of the courtroom after U.S. Magistrate Judge Kenneth Mansfield's ruling, she said, "As expected." She referred to the situation as, "this whole idiotic thing."

A hearing for a similar request by her husband hasn't been scheduled. He has a new attorney who said Tuesday that he won't be ready in time for the couple's May 22 trial date. The newly appointed lawyer, Marc Victor, said he doesn't think he will be ready anytime this year.

Kau said she is contemplating requesting a separate trial from her client's husband.

There was no mention in court Wednesday of Russian spy intrigue prosecutors introduced when the couple were arrested last year.

A search of the couple's home in Kapolei, a Honolulu suburb, turned up Polaroids of them wearing jackets that appear to be authentic KGB uniforms, an invisible ink kit, documents with coded language and maps showing military bases, prosecutors said at the time.

But prosecutors last month asked that jurors not hear about the uniforms, and a judge last week agreed.

The couple have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, false statement in a passport application and aggravated identity theft.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by Hawaii News Now, Primrose was allegedly issued a total of five U.S. passports under the identity of Bobby Fort. Morrison was issued a total of three U.S. passports under the name of Julie Montague, the complaint says.  

In a court filing last year, prosecutors released details from a small portion of what they said is Morrison's journal, Hawaii News Now reported.

The entry is titled: "12 things I would take with me if I had to flee my present life (Again?)"
