what songs so far do you think were daydreaming exercises? to the best of your knowledge?
obligatory i’m just some guy
songs i’m pretty sure are fictional
I'm Only Me When I'm with You: it’s a 2003 song, before she moved to nashville, so she didn’t have any super close friends at the time. the romantic connotations are almost definitely made up
A Perfectly Good Heart: could be her being dramatic about a middle school breakup, but i think it’s more likely she was just daydreaming about being really sad
Fearless: taylor’s said she was just daydreaming about the perfect first date a million times, look at any concert she played this at in 2007/8
Timeless: she wrote it sometime in 2009, likely sometime after june because she mentions antiquing as a new hobby in the lover journals from that month. so it could be about somebody we don’t know about, or maybe taylor lautner, but my guess is she was just wandering around an antique store and daydreaming about being in love
Stay Stay Stay: she says she was just daydreaming, and while she definitely bent the truth with the red secret messages in particular, i’m prone to believe this one. she wrote it sometime in 2010, so “daydreaming about real love” could be a really sick burn about any number of people, but i think this was just her in between relationships fiddling around
Death By A Thousand Cuts: you can get into conspiracy theory stuff about just how on and off again her and joes relationship was, but it’s a pretty direct retelling of something great, so i believe it when she said she watched the movie and then got inspired
like, the vast majority of the unreleased tracks
song that kinda blur the line
Stay Beautiful: cor(e)y passed her in the hallway and she thought he was kinda cute, i don’t think it was a big thing as the song makes it seem
You Belong With Me: taylor’s said it was inspired by one of her band mates apologizing to his girlfriend on the phone, but everything else is made up
Mine: she said a guy put his arm around her and she saw a whole life flash before her eyes, so like, it kinda happened? it wasnt anyone she got super serious with though
Speak Now: she was the +1 to hayley williams’ ex’s wedding, joked about speak now-ing, then had a nightmare about one of her exes getting married
too many songs on folklore and evermore to list out
anything she’s ever written for a movie soundtrack
songs that probably have a muse but not anyone we know about so could be daydreaming
Cold As You: there’s an unreleased song, love to lose, that parallels cold as you. so possibly there’s some guy that inspired two songs, or she was just circling around similar themes
Electric Touch
Foolish One: possibly joe jonas angst, possible pre-relationship john mayer angst, possibly someone else, who knows what taylor was up to in 2009 man that girl had a fucking roster going
Everything Has Changed
Message In A Bottle: i like to think it’s about eddie redmayne but genuinely i have no clue
Wildest Dreams: iirc she said it was her being dramatic and thinking no one would ever want to really fall in love with her at the grammy museum performance but like who knows if it was general discomfort or a specific person that inspired it
Crazier: could be a drew song, could be her daydreaming
Beautiful Eyes and I Heart ?: don’t know enough about these songs to say one way or another, but i believe she’s claimed the i heart ? thing actually happened? cant remember where though

4/ STARS by Annabel Nugent
The Swiftie fatigue should’ve set in by now. The pop star, 33, is everywhere: she is re-recording old albums and releasing them periodically while also on a very sold-out, very publicised world tour, clips of which circulate hourly on social media. And yet, still fans awaited Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) with the same heady anticipation as if it were a release from an elusive artist who seldom puts out music, not pop’s hardest-working star.
It’s the third of six albums that Swift is re-recording in order to take legal control of her back catalogue. Originally released in 2010, Speak Now arrived sandwiched between 2008’s Fearless and 2012’s Red (the two records, in fact, that Swift has already remade). To listen to Speak Now, written entirely by a then 20-year-old Swift, is to hear an artist in transition – both in her music (Swift cleaves closer to pop here than she had ever done previously) and her profile, which was rising rapidly and dizzyingly.
As with previous Taylor’s Versions, the most obvious change is Swift’s voice, which is expectedly richer and more mature than it was a decade ago. It is also notably less country. That nasal twang that once plucked against the lovestruck chorus of “Mine” is no more. Its absence slightly blunts the fun factor in singing along, but not by much. (Notably too, the fiddle appears to sit lower in the mix of the rootsy, bluegrass-influenced kiss off “Mean”).
But really, the record’s appeal exists in how true it stays to the source material. This isn’t an opportunity for reinvention, but rediscovery. The shimmery haze of “Enchanted” is as enticing as ever, as is the bruised, bluesy ballad “Dear John” that takes aim at an unkind ex-lover. John Mayer, though – whom Swift briefly dated and whom the song is heavily rumoured to be about – is perhaps part of the minority who was not eagerly awaiting another round of Speak Now. Last night, he shared a photo of the night sky at his Colorado concert lit up with the words “please be kind” possibly in anticipation of the vitriol likely reinvigorated and heading his way (again).
Lyrically, too, these new versions do not stray far, if at all. The only exception is “Better than Revenge”, which has undergone one significant tinkering. The Paramore-indebted number, a pop-punk savaging of a girl who stole her boyfriend, originally included the line: “She’s better known for the things that she does/ On the mattress, whoa.” To the dismay of some fans, Swift has traded in the barbed taunt for a vaguer sentiment, something about a moth and a flame.
Sprung from the vault are six new tracks. Co-produced with her frequent collaborators, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, these include features from Fall Out Boy (“Electric Touch”) and Hayley Williams (“Castles Crumbling”). The most talked-about track is “When Emma Falls in Love”, a lilting piano-led number that is the spiritual predecessor to “Betty” (2020’s Folklore) and “Dorothea” (2020’s Evermore). The best, though, is the very danceable “I Can See You” – a track that conjures an indie-rock mood not unlike those found on Swift’s most recent records. The past typically isn’t the most comfortable place to inhabit, but Swift embodies her younger self fully, imbuing these tracks with the same immediacy and emotional heft as she did all those years ago. Country twang or not.

Reading Master List (non-fiction)
After graduating from Uni I was so burnt out from reading that I couldn't pick up a book for years. I love to read, but it's been pretty rough trying to get back into enjoying reading. This year though I decided to make a master list of books I want to get through, and it seems to be helping with motivation! I've bought about 5 or 6 books from the list and I'm about halfway through with them (Chomsky was a beast and took the longest).
Anyway, I thought that maybe y'all would be interested in seeing the list. It's got a bunch of stuff on it... lots of politics... I'll put it below the cut. Things in green will indicate items I've already read/are currently reading.
I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have read something from the list, or if you have something that you think would be a good addition.

We’re so excited to catch up with Lauren and what she has in store, read our full interview below. Download/stream “In Between” HERE
By Perry Johnson

TELL US ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR NEW EP IN BETWEEN
These songs have actually been sitting with me since 2018/2019. I think the inspiration for all of my music is always pretty personal, introspective, and reflective. I drew from experiences that I was going through for songs like Em(oceans), Trust Issues, & Always Love and then I try to relate the themes in such a way that anyone listening can see themselves in my experiences. All In My Feelings was inspired by a fuck boy lol and then Wolves was inspired by the bullshit I’ve been through in this industry and a reminder to keep going to anyone who needs it.
WHAT SONG AND LYRIC FROM THIS EP HIT HOME THE HARDEST FOR YOU
They honestly each hit in a very deep way lol but I think it’s between Em(oceans) & Wolves. Probably Always Love & Trust Issues as well; Trust Issues always hits incredibly hard lyrically.
ALWAYS LOVE IS AN ODE TO LOVE HOW DOES LOVE SHOW UP ON THIS RECORD AND WHAT MOMENTS LED TO WRITING THIS TRACK
Yeah, it’s an ode to love that can no longer be but will always exist. I feel like there aren’t many breakup songs that acknowledge the fact that there was love shared between the two people involved even if it wasn’t meant to be at the end of it all. Most are either bitter & wrought with regret or mean and dismissive of the love that existed once..so I figured this song summed up my actual feelings which is that even though it was difficult to let go, I will always have a place in my heart and love for the people I have once loved.
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR SOLO MUSIC HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE GROWN LYRICALLY AND MUSICALLY AS AN ARTIST
I think I’m still in the process. I’ve released 2 EPs and 4 singles on my own. Plus some really beautiful collaborations with my friends, like Snow Tha Product & Halsey. I think I keep getting more and more comfortable expressing myself and like with anything, practice makes for perfection. I’ve been writing since before I put it into song format so I think just getting clearer and better at expressing myself through music has been the biggest growth arc for me. I’m definitely in the studio now making new things..like I said all these songs were written back in the 2018/2019 era, so I’ve grown A LOT as a woman since then and I think that’s reflected in the music I’m making right now.
Tumblr media
WHO HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN MUSIC
I don’t know that I have one biggest inspiration. I’m inspired by all kinds of incredible artists that have shaped my ear and the way I hear and complete my songs. I love singer/songwriters so definitely Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, Hayley Williams, Alicia Keys, PINK!, Shakira, John Mayer, Jhene Aiko, Summer Walker, Kehlani, SZA, Lana Del Rey. I’m inspired greatly by Beyoncé and the way she executes background vocals and communicates an entire vision and pulls that into her performances. I’m inspired by Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone…I just love women who express themselves and their truth.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF
I’d tell her to relax and allow life to happen for her. I’d tell her that she was safe now and protected and that she deserves to be present and happy and enjoy the moment. Also to read the contracts and find a lawyer who gives a fuck lol
OUT OF ALL THE TRACKS ON THIS NEW EP WHAT SONG DESCRIBES YOUR TRUEST SELF?
Probably Em(oceans) & Always Love
Tumblr media
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WANT LISTENERS TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EP
A better understanding of who I am and who they are and some songs that can accompany them through life and make them feel seen and held and shake their asses.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR MENTAL HEALTH BEING IN THE SPOTLIGHT FOR SO MANY YEARS AS WE ALL KNOW SOCIAL MEDIA CAN HAVE ITS GOOD SIDE AND BAD
I honestly have had a lot of rapid growth in this department over the past year. I believe life is as spiritual as it is physical and the more that I tap into how connected I am spiritually, the more I’m able to understand that I am protected and held in realms that go beyond this world. The more I tap into that the less I’m tapped into the matrix and what other people think of me. Most of what other people think or judge about someone is actually thoughts and demons of their own that they’re facing and projecting to feel better about themselves at the moment. I know who I am now and no one can tell me otherwise, especially not strangers on the internet that I do not know personally. So, prayer, breaks from the internet, more time in nature, meditation, creating, and spending time w people I love and by mySelf. All of that really helps keep me grounded.
WHAT BEAUTY PRODUCT ARE. YOU OBSESSED WITH AT THE MOMENT
I don’t really wear too much makeup unless I’m going to events haha so I love a good light, clean foundation. I’m obsessed w my new Caliray free dreaming skin wellness diffusing tint. It’s lightweight and feels like a tinted moisturizer but has better coverage AND it’s clean. Which I love. I love products that are made thoughtfully, sustainably, and with ingredients that don’t harm me or the environment. I also loveee their clean mascara called Come Hell or High Water. I also love me some virgin coconut oil. I use it as a full-body moisturizer and makeup remover and it’s amazing.
BEING CUBAN AMERICAN WILL WE SEE MORE MUSIC IN ESPAÑOL FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE
Definitely. Spanglish energy will always be coming from my corner, whether that’s full Spanish songs or incorporation of it into my English music sonically or lyrically.
YOUR FAVORITE SPANGLISH WORD
Hahaa maybe janguear o chilear
Tumblr media
WHAT CUBAN DISH DOES YOUR FAMILY MAKE THAT YOU ALWAYS CRAVE
Omg my mom’s bistec empanizado with a side of tostones
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU THIS YEAR
I’m working on my album so very much in the studio and just connecting with mySelf and life and allowing myself to live in the In Between. Definitely going to be taking these songs on the road as well

Ok now that we’re five hours away from sntv, here’s my wishlist (I won’t really be posting about the album but I thought I’d make this for posterity)
Hayley williams gets a verse on castles crumbling (PLEASE)
she keeps the last kiss shaky breath
at least one of the vault tracks tears John mayer to shreds. I want that man eviscerated
she keeps the emotion in her voice!! Part of the reason sn is such a good album is the way the songs are so tell-all and emotional and genuine, and honestly it just won’t hit the same if you can’t hear the anger in DJ, the sadness in last kiss and ngu, the desperation in haunted, and so on
Speaking of haunted, I hope the rerecord sounds as similar as possible. She is perfect and should not be messed with
she keeps all the little spoken ad-libs in the background of better than revenge
general rock/pop-punk vibes on the vault tracks— she went somewhat in that direction on songs like the story of us, and I just want more of it
she keeps the little giggle in speak now. this one is probably a given but I’ll include it anyway
