Today would be my Grandfather's 112th birthday and if that doesn't put some perspective on time and the world, I don't know what will. When my mother was born, he was 42 which is pretty damn close to my age and I cannot even comprehend trying to raise a kid at my age and energy level.

I'm also here BECAUSE of him. Like, more directly than you might think.

My mother, the youngest in a large Catholic family, didn't intend to have any children. Yet my Grandfather told her over and over again that he had always wanted a ginger granddaughter who looked like my Nana and she was his last chance.

He died of a massive heart attack on the side of the street. Nobody in my family got to say goodbye.

To me, he has always been a legend - a man that's larger than life. Apparently, he had the personality to match the myth. He kept two greenhouses where he grew all of his family's food and had the entire neighborhood (and anyone else who happened to stop by) over every Sunday after church for hamburgers no matter the weather.

And yeah, I am his ginger grandchild and I look exactly like my Nana. I always wonder how he pulled that one off. Less than a year and a half after his death and there I was.

I miss him which sounds incredibly strange to say of a man I never met. But I was close to my Nana (her favorite by all accounts) and she used to tell me stories about marrying him and being so afraid that she wanted to go home to her Grandmother every day, but how he loved her and won her over in the end.

She's been dead for most of twenty years now, too.

Anyway, we're drinking his favorite drink tonight and thinking about him.
