King of Wands - Fest Fic

Yes, hi, it is I, your local Fangfest fangirl. I want so badly to be chill but apparently it's just not in my DNA. This fic was... I don't even know. Special, precious, tender, careful, funny, sweet... just so many good things. I was sucked in (heh) from the very first paragraphs, and I'd argue that most people would be:

“This bond will remain in your heart, beyond even the deterioration of silk and sinew,” the officiant intones. She pulls at the end of the ribbon, which slithers over Harry and Malfoy’s wrist until it drops in a heap between their feet. Harry looks up at Malfoy, searching for something, a twitch of an eyebrow or the hint of a frown, but he’s still infuriatingly blank.

“You are bound by the tradition of vampires and–” The officiant clears her throat delicately. “Werewolves. Let this union be a union of our societies as a whole.”

This is a slowww burn. Draco is everything I love him to be: prickly and self-protective, but also silly and sweet when he learns to let his guard down. Harry, too, is like a big bouncy puppy that just wants to love someone so badly and be loved in return. The way that they care for each other is breathtaking, it made me want to wrap them up in a big hug and protect them from the world. Luckily, they do that for each other. Ok, this has been rambly and I'm sorry, just know that this was sincerely one of my favorite fics I've read in a long time and I'll definitely be bookmarking it to read again and again.

Summary:

It's been eight years of this. Eight years since the tug that drew Harry like the tide pulls the earth towards the Camerlengo and Vatican City. Eight years since he'd last felt what it was to think freely and not around the wretched, awful din. Eight years since the bars of his gilded cage had slammed shut around him all while the Camerlengo spun the key on his conniving finger.

But it was today when Draco Malfoy walked into St. Peter's Basilica, looking so young as though the years had passed him by, and smelling like pennies and dead leaves.

For H/D Fangfest 2022.

Excerpt:

“Where do I start?” 

Harry selfishly wanted to say ‘the beginning’. He wanted to sit in this sweltering little box while Draco touched him until his body boiled itself to death. “Well, I was an awful prat as a child.”

“You’re still an awful prat.” 

“Yes, but now I’m an adult.” 

“Got me there.” 

“I aided the rise of an evil tyrant who wanted to purge the world of Muggleborn magic users.”

“That’s a good one.” Draco squeezed his hand as if to say ‘sod off’ and Harry squeezed it back as if to reply ‘sorry, go on’. 

“Oh, just loads of sodomy.” Harry coughed as the blood unceremoniously rushed to his head and face at that. “Just loads of it, and I never once felt bad about it. In fact, I have no intention of stopping, Your Eminence, so we might as well just skip over that bit.” 

“Confession doesn’t mean you stop sinning, Draco.” It took great effort to clear away the lump that had formed in Harry’s throat at the prospect of ‘loads of sodomy’ to get the words out. “It means you don’t have to carry it around with you.” 

“What if I want to?” Draco’s tone shifted as the song slid into a minor key. “What if I want to remember the look on that bastard’s face as I carved him open and speared him through like the pig he is?” 

Harry tensed against Draco, his breath hitching at the sudden darkness that cast the man’s tone in cold steel. 

“What if I want to close my eyes and smell his vile acrid blood as it bubbled up from his chest and spilled into my hands for the rest of my endless life. What then?” 

Was it fear that had Harry's heart thundering behind his tonsils as though intent to choke him to death? Was it terror that had his lungs pulsing, drawing shallow useless breaths? Or was it something else? 

“I wouldn’t stop you,” Harry answered, his voice thick until he swallowed his heart back down into his chest. “I don’t think I could.” 

“Are you afraid of me now?” Draco’s voice was as delicate as an orchid and twice as tender, and somehow that only made his words that much more disturbing. But where lies were concerned, Harry had never quite gotten the hang of them. 

“No.” Perhaps a better priest would be mortified. Driven mad by the unhinged darkness that lingered around Draco as though he were the very shadows into which he slipped like so much silk on the breeze. Perhaps a better priest would condemn him for the murderer he was, for the monster he had become. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. “No, I don’t think I am.” 

“Then perhaps we are both damned.” Draco drew his hand free of Harry’s and before he had the chance to lament the loss it slid under his chin, tugging him up just enough for Draco to brush his lips against Harry’s. 

The rush, the absolute torrent of desire that he’d stemmed only just barely, seemed to slam into him as he tasted that earthy sort of musk that lingered on Draco’s breath, mingling with the everpresent taste of spoons and pence. It began chaste, but it did not remain that way long. 

Harry twisted, leaning into the kiss to press Draco against the wall of the confessional, his mitre slipping to the floor by their feet as he opened his mouth, inviting Draco inside in more ways than one. His song crescendoed to orchestral. 

“Can’t go to hell if you never die.” Harry’s words were breathless.

Nine of Wands - Vampires

I'm sure everyone is tired of me talking about the Fangfest fics but I will not stop, especially when such perfect fics like this one are in the mix. I'm not going to say too much here, because there are some definite suspenseful elements of this one that had me absolutely flying through it (and enjoying literally every single word).

Draco couldn’t fix time. He couldn’t change it. He certainly couldn’t undo his choices, during the war and in the decades following. His life could only ever move forward. Endlessly forward. Even as those around him changed and grew. And yet, he thought of Harry smiling at him across the workbench, and Molly Weasley’s overful plates, and Pansy’s teasing laugh. For perhaps the first time, Draco felt like he was well and truly living in the present.

The theme of time is expertly woven through this fic, subtly but cleverly. There's a flashback to young Draco in his father's library talking to Draco about the power of time that will haunt me, just Lucius' ability to get into Draco's head and the sheer willpower it would've taken to right those wrongs that had been so deeply embedded into Draco's being. Draco as a clockmaker is just such a perfect fit, too, the mechanics of it, the mystery and satisfaction that comes from solving a particular problem. @babooshkart made some gorgeous artwork that I'm glad I looked at before reading because it was such a lovely image to hold in my head while I read. Anyway, this has been rambly but the bottom line is this: absolutely incredible fic, go check it out.

You are more than welcome to submit before the deadline. All early submitters will receive a bulb of garlic and a wooden stake in the mail.

If you think you might need an extension, please let us know as soon as possible so we can accommodate you as best as we can. 

If you've realized you need to drop out of the fest, it’s no problem at all, but we’d appreciate as much notice as possible so that we can adjust our posting schedule accordingly. 

Extension requests, drop out notifications, and any questions you may have are best made via email (hdfangfest@gmail.com) or discord (crow #5501), not via tumblr ask.

Art claims are still open! However, we request that if you do claim for art, that you please contact us via email or discord at the same time to let us know so that we can confirm your place in the fest ASAP.

HD Fangfest Submission Process

Submissions for HD Fangfest are due on May 1, but if you’re finished early, you’re invited to submit at any time!

Before we get into the submissions procedures, a few reminders:

- Though fic claiming for this year’s fest has closed, art claiming will remain open until the sun consumes the earth  likely until mid-April, so feel free to sign up at any point.

- If you have claimed a prompt for fic or art, you should have received email confirmation from the mods (save for a few cases who were contacted via discord/tumblr because gmail hates us). If you’ve claimed a prompt but haven’t heard from the mods, please reach out to us.

- If you think that you might need an extension, please let us know ASAP. We’ll be able to be more accommodating with extensions the sooner we know you may need one!

Ready to submit? Here’s how:

- Upload your creation to the HD Fangfest 2022 Collection by navigating to the collection and clicking “post to collection.”

- Be sure to fill out all fields as you would for any other fic: title, rating, tags, summary, etc.

- Add the fest mod account as a co-creator by checking “add co-creators?” while uploading. Once you’ve checked the box, you’ll be able to add our mod account, HDFangFest, as a co-creator. (This step is necessary so that we can change the post date when fics are revealed. We won’t edit tags or content in your creation without your permission.
