Parallax: A Summary!
one of the things that confused me the most while getting into hal jordan/green lantern was parallax. i was very lost and had no clue what was going on, so let me give you a summary!
first, some reading recs:
Green Lantern (1990) #46, 48, 49, 50
Zero Hour
Green Lantern (1990) #0, 62, 63, 64
now that that's out of the way: what is parallax?!
the short answer is that parallax is (now) a fear entity that was stored within the green central battery. it was what caused the 'yellow impurity', or the weakness to the color yellow.
but the long answer requires a lot more history, so let's dive in!
parallax was originally supposed to be the gateway to kyle rayner taking up the name green lantern, as hal had previously held the name since the 1950's (so, for context: almost 40 years!). the original arc was part of emerald twilight, where coast city was destroyed by mongul and hank henshaw (cyborg superman) and seven million people died along with it. the arc was written to have had hal be driven mad by this, and head off to oa to go kill the guardians of the universe and the central power battery, killing any lantern who stood in his way. he would assume the villain name 'parallax' and go on to terrorize the dc universe, attempting to rewrite history to save coast city using the rings that he had taken from the fallen lanterns.
so why do i keep saying 'originally'?
well, because it was retconned! the new story is that sinestro had been trapped inside of the central battery and found parallax, which is now written to be a fear entity resembling a beast-like flying creature. sinestro awoke this entity and released it onto hal jordan during his period of mourning, where he was vulnerable, and that is now written to be what caused him to become a murderous villain! this makes it easier to see hal as a victim of circumstance, but it's also made clear that parallax does not 'control' its host.
so what did parallax even do?
well for starters, as i said: tried to bring back coast city using the rings he stole from the lanterns. he also attempted to hunt down cyborg superman, but eventually his good side won and he gave his life to reignite earth's sun in the story, 'the final night'. from here, you should read day of judgment (where hal becomes the spectre) and the spectre (2001) for his adventures after that!
