so important to me that ritsu is the weakest natural psychic we see outside of the awakening lab. that whether by inexperience or simply not having as much raw power (solid evidence for both but i like him not having raw power), he simply doesn’t have the same strength that the others in the main cast have! and that it’s enough, because he wanted psychic powers so he wouldn’t be afraid of ???%, and then realizes he doesn’t have to be. even at full strength, he’s not strong enough to stand against shigeo for more than a moment, but it DOESNT MATTER. bc he has enough to help people. to protect the body improvement club from getting hurt. enough to use his wits and the power he can use to hold his own, and keep up with the likes of shou and teru through his resourcefulness. how the talents he cared so little about turned into something he could be proud of! and how he did all that with basically just telekinesis and barriers, none of teru’s cool techniques or mob’s raw power! and how despite being outclassed on paper, ritsu can hold his own against serious threats! catch shou’s attention! and most importantly of all, he can help his big brother!

Ritsu thought for so long that the only way he could be safe was to be more dangerous than his brother. All his worth was on his physical strength as a literal trauma response, because in his mind that was the only way to be safe. But once he finds his safety he can actually exit survival mode and care about other things. Him being a weaker esper does not make him a Lesser one. Yk. Physical strength ≠ worth. People are not defined by their talents. Y'know how you talked about how for so long he was defined solely by his achievements and being normal (the lack of what he wanted, of having psychic powers), and even once he finally got powers they weren't like Mob. How much he judged the awakening lab kids for not being as strong as Mob. How much he judged himself for not being as strong as Mob. Thinking about how he tried to self destruct to make himself stronger. How people will do that with sacrificing their mental health to advance in school or work so much, that probably carried over from how he became such a good student to how he viewed training at All. How he awakened his powers from feeling horrible about himself but gained CONTROL over them by being honest with himself and letting himself feel. By being able to see the good in himself and Mob. By admitting what it is. It was trauma. They weren't monsters. They weren't enemies. They were just traumatized as fuck. And this scary part of Mob wasn't actually just something scary. This was just trauma and fucked up emotions. It wasn't about becoming stronger it was about FINALLY stopping trying to be like his brother. He stops trying to be Dangerous, he stops being a doormat, he doesn't sit still and let ???% "hurt" (I really don't believe ???% was going to hurt him, at least not on purpose, he might've accidentally hurt him though with how bad his powers were going haywire, yikes) him to snap him out of it, he takes control over his own life. He wanted agency so so bad for so long and how he gets it isn't by becoming dangerous or becoming like Mob, it's by finally reflecting on the source of all his anger and pain and feelings of helplessness and letting himself SEE his brother and do you HEAR ME. “Ok Borzoi so why don’t you like Dirkjohn” - somebody, who didn’t ask, but I want to ramble. 

I guess it’s funny as a crack ship but in actuality, i feel it would fall incredibly flat and only be viable in an unhealthy way. Canonically, they've got little to nothing to do with each other, and their relationship branches on bullshit in the epilogues and HS2 which just isn't a good judge of Dirk and Johns character so much as a butcher of it.

First, lets get their characters down. Dirk, very introspective to the point of destruction, who’s prone to rambling, overcomplicating and accentuating things in a way to keep up his aura of coolness, of being “totally in control and all knowing”, and sort of socially awkward, failing quite a few times to read jokes as jokes. 

John, upfront, more likely to push forward without really thinking, keeps things simple and asks not much, and very much a protagonist figure. He’s blunt, he’s teasing in his humour, and he likes to take the mic out of people and make his own fun. 

Dirk is very active. He's willing to go through many hoops and talk around himself, and he needs a conversational partner willing to spar him on it, however, John is anything but that. He's upfront, he brings a hypothetical hammer down into the bush that dirk is walking around. Jake will indulge, so will a lot of the alpha kids, but the beta kids by far are more blunt and straight forward. John would see whatever bullshit Dirk is pulling and think it's stupid and ornery, and shut him down..Dirk would go "okay" and then either try to counterpoint to be shut down, or walk away.This conversation is a relaly good point of reference for how it would go. Note how roxy is going through the general alpha kids bullshit theatrics and ornery, and john instead of getting it, cuts it down with "no thats stupid", and doesnt get the joke.

dirk wouldn't know how to handle someone actually being completely straight up and refusing to humor him, being open about not giving a shit about whatever tangent dirk is on.  it might humble him which he definitely needs sometimes but most of the time itd just make him go "ok. whatever man im going to jake's"

John and Jake also have a bad habit of comparison in a negative sense, like how he did with davesprite. Jake does it out loud with no regard for others, and John is the type to drop a single “x has already made this joke” because his preference of Dave is so much stronger than Dirk. Dirk wouldn’t be able to beat Dave to the ironic punchline because most likely, Dave has already said it in a language John understands, and John has made fun of him for it already. John doesn’t have patience for long winded games, if he’s not in the mood he’ll just fuck off. 

Personally feel like John would be acutely aware that Dirk hates when he shuts him down, but he just genuinely cannot sit here and listen to a “worse version of dave talk like hes pretending to be rose. I just cant.i don’t have it in me.” 

I mean I think they’d be funny somewhat, but they would not be happy together at all it would be awkward as hell. Dirk needs someone to pull him out of his bullshit but John just won’t do that. He won’t consider it really that much. They could have funny moments, but the toxicity of their potential relationship sours most of it for me. Dirk is pretty fucking intense in a lot of ways, and hes prone to being a lot. 

the alpha kids in general are just way intense due to their fucking isolation whatever thety smoked in those years made them volatile like fucking potent like a chili peppers but thats words for another ramble.

John just isn’t able to match Dirk. He doesn't think enough, he's just going with the flow and dirk needs someone who can either match him on an intellectual level or someone who can match him in an interest way. John just wouldn’t take the relationship seriously enough, which would lead to Dirk trying to figure out something that isn’t there to really figure out. John matches well with someone who has known him for a while and doesn’t have a specific way they want things to go.

i dont want them to be too similar, so i dont think ill be giving this lydia any colour changing features. the most immediate visual indicator of her inheritance is her amber eyes. i think she has the potential to do anything beetlejuice can, but she has no control over any of it. shes a volatile, furious, but also confused and scared spirit, and it tends to just burst out of her, mostly as a destructive force. beetlejuice isnt all that great at emotional regulation himself, so hes not much help in regard to teaching her to manage it. he sort of just figured it out over time, he doesnt know how to explain it.

lydia is spiritully bound to beetlejuice in some way. im not sure about the details, but its definately magic and hes definately the one with the power. otho essentially gave him her soul. it might be that she cant disobey him, or she needs his explicit permission to do certain things. but as always, i gotta make their dynamic as fucked up as possible.

bit of both. beetlejuice does grant the cult occasional favours to keep them interested, but theyre mostly either simple magic or placebo. basically, hes led them to believe that summoning him requires invoking his name and an offering. i dont think lydia was killed with any specific repayment in mind. it was part the cult being this feedback loop of hyping each other up to deeper and deeper dedication, and part otho trying to cement his status at the top. they thought sacrificing her would show just how devoted they are to beetlejuice. will beetlejuice see this and realise hes gone too far? of course he fucking wont! he just tells them good job, you satisfied my hunger for innocent blood or whatever, so you dont need to do that again for a while and can go back to the regular stuff.

lydia is furious at all of this, of course, but shes also just distraught. she was put through a horrific ordeal and died choking on her own blood for people who found her a convenient means to suck up to a demon, and subsequently lost her autonomy to that demon who never wanted her in the first place. not that he cares that she was murdered in his name, just that shes inconvenient. she just lost her mother and now has been ripped away from her dad too and doesnt have anyone she can trust to care for her, so she has to look out for herself while not really knowing what 'herself' means anymore. shes still dressed for her execution and theres blood all over her face and this huge gash in her throat, and she cant figure out how to change it. she doesnt understand her new powers and cant stop them exploding out of her.

so i read the isekai bean counter The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter as per ur suggestion and wowe i actually like this isekai. there's enough characterization in the side characters to feel like they have their own stories and pov to tell. it's great, and the typical isekai rpg tropes arent really used too much and yeah i like this

so i think for this case, there is a bit of japanism going on but its not egregious? maybe? ill try to explain but ymmv. ill say if theres a flaw its that the world building of this isekai is not fleshed out enough on the culture/social department in short, but it's not really a problem since the story is really good at focusing on the stuff it wants to hit. the flaw is a personal observation and doesnt subtract imo.

work culture

the most japanism the mcs bring into this world imo is their view on work, which is the center of the story's theme. to put it simply, the MC, Seiichiro and the girl maiden, Yua, come imprinted with the culture effects of having the expectation to pull their own weight and work. Seiichiro is the overworked 30 year old salaryman thats normal under japanese societal standards, and Yua is a new gen yet to enter workforce girl who has yet to figure out if she wants to accept or reject the work culture.

meanwhile the isekai country they are summoned into, Romany, clearly embodies a different work culture thats more on the more... wasteful or even lazier side. more about this in a bit.

Seiichiro's work ethic and the work culture he embodies starts infecting others in the isekai, and Seiichiro single handedly causes multiple department in the world to be actually efficient, and influences the king to look for internal and difficult solutions than rely on summoning randos to fix their problem. but theres some stuff in there. theres a more framing on how his work ethic is actually extreme, is fucking terrible for his health, and he does pay the price multiple times, and he does eases up on it a little which is good.

it takes time for his love interest Aresh to slowly coax him out of it, and Aresh also gets a kick in the nuts to put more thought into his work, which is very cool.

but if i can point out a little thing here, its that Romany comes off as a incompetent country thats more interested in serving the egos of its nobles and those with titles. kind of, since we're shown that many of those already in positions of authority are actually competent in their jobs.

if we extrapolate how Romany might be a European or a Western country compared to Japan, i can then safely say this might be subconsciously how some might view the short work hours in certain countries like Australia, New Zealand and Norway. i believe none of them are over 40 hours/week. but japan is so bad its infamous for Karoshi so. you know. somethings going on here. since the writing never frames it as an actual flaw but just the norm, the writer is careful to not take a stance about Romany's work hours and by proxy its potential real life counterparts.

theres also something lowkey about ikigai, the thing that one centers to be the meaning of their life. for seiichiro, that's work that he can throw himself into and produce results. Romany does not seem to have this ikigai, and to be fair ikigai is like the self help book for employees to justify the destruction of their bodies over, so eh.

Romany at least does not culturally fully pick up on this ikigai, and the writer doesnt let Seiichiro impose this part of him on the country despite bettering it. which is good. so the japanism of this part i think gets a pass imo.

food culture

hmmm tough

because the MC doesnt have full agency over his food, he is only allowed to eat things that suit his palette and doesnt kill him. of the food we are shown, while of them are vaguely yoshoku, it never becomes too much of a focus for me to pick up on anything that suggest otherwise either. so its ambiguous as to what cuisine this is, but at the very least there's soup.

because also theres a lack of focus and a huge suggestion on how the MC's palette is more in line with japanese cuisine which tends to be on the lighter side, he seems a little picky with food.

but again bc the writing is careful not to force the natives of this Isekai world to be influenced by his choice of food, but in fact the other way round, its not a problem here.

religion

okay probably the most egregious part but i think its bc the writing is more interested in using this as a vehicle rather than fleshing out world building.

the miasma and purification thing is rooted in shintoism. thats it. Romany's religion is Shintoism but if the god was a more Monotheistic one. this isnt out of the norm for japanese media but it feels very uninspired to me. religion in anime/manga/LN also tends to be very dragon quest-y rather than actual religion-y.

i skimmed through vol 6 in japanese, and theres a part where Seiichiro and Yua goes "We come from a polytheistic culture where there are so many gods one can't possibly remember all. So its cool if you want to believe in just one or all or none at all."

and this breaks the minds of the small audience they have bc Romany is 90% of a monotheistic faith. to be fair these 2 who are supposedly summoned with the backing of their god saying polytheism or even atheism is cool is in context kinda mind blowing.

if anything this is more of a take that to those who try to shut down other faiths. so again, not actually bad and also funny.

the mc's domain

its interesting that his domain is just over check and balances. meaning, he physically does not have agency over a real material piece. his position as the uke also further reinforces his (perhaps at times willful) lack of agency.

in other isekais as ive mentioned before typically when the MC gets their 'domain' it goes full japanism and often while consuming the native's own. while i dont expect a writer to write things thats radically out of their comfort zone and culture, it does get a little silly like the Reincarnated As A Slime anime where the MC's faction wears increasingly Japanese outfits.

bean counter also gets a plus for committing to not bringing in more japanese style outfits. kinda. the hoodie Aresh wears at times is kinda a pass.

This is was supposed to be a simple ask but it ended up getting long because of there being too many question and discussions but barely any answers so sorry about that.

On the topic of WhatPumpkin sometimes we all have to wonder what the fuck is going on behind the scenes, the latest news we got werent that much and it felt more of a like "Hey guys we are still alive dont forget about us" situation and it doesnt help that we cant really get any info because of how the only guy that Im atleast aware that works on it and is online is James and although I have no source because it was months ago, when beyond canon came back I remember him getting asked about Hiveswap and i dont remember if he answered it on the blog or on a reddit qna but he had said he cant really do much about it because hes just the music guy on that department and not an director or writer and he probably cannot say whats going on if hes aware of even the minimum because of NDAs and you know the situation is weird when not even the new director for post canon can do nothing about it or doesnt know what the fuck is going on over there either (i believe its more of the former).

On the same topic Hussie jumping the ship in my opinion feels like such an awful move in a moral and community sense, he hires fucked up people and ends up going through development hell and instead of trying to fix it he just runs away and gives someone else the work. He becasically invited destruction to that place by not doing background checks and shit and now everyone else but him has to suffer for it. I wonder if WhatPumpkin will close business after they finish Hiveswap (if they even manage to finish it) or if their writting quality wont be bad if they try to do Hauntswitch now.

Overall sounding like an awesome story itself, a alien coming to earth and fighting a cult related to the presidents with a human companion. Especially considering how Dammek sounds like hes an asshole and also because of how trolls are usually violent could lead to interesting interactions.

I might be wrong and biased though but I feel like that concept could attract more outsiders than Hiveswap could ever wish to do. And hopefully thats it and that I wont waste almost an hour of my life rambling about this stuff (for my own sake because i feel like i could have spent my time better but i also need to post this somewhere and i dont use social media most of the time and when i do its usually to see fanart, memes and overall discussion of my fav franchises) but I probably will in the future.

Yes, the question about Hiveswap was asked in a Q&A back in October 30th, 2023 from James Roach here (Archive ver for backup). The news about development should be something more like how Toby does with the Deltarune newsletter. Monthly, maybe do a special event ARG thing that gives insight of what's coming up, or anything like that. Though even with that, it might be probably too little too late since we are at 11 years since the Kickstarter had funded. Probably doesn't help since 2 million dollars was wasted, it's a mystery how the game is still being worked on if the original Kickstarter money that was given to them, had been used up. What is WhatPumpkin's new source of income then? Do they have a second job they aren't telling us about? Are they using part of that Patreon money from Beyond Canon since technically there are some that work within Hiveswap too like James? Then there's the fact Hussie not only wasted the money, but basically left the Kickstarter project he started in the first place. He may own it and be credited as the creator, but he won't be involved in the future Acts and Hauntswitch. I'm surprised nobody is pissed at him for scamming them out of 2 million dollars. Do people not care if the original person who hosted it left? Especially with the truth come to light thanks to Gio's research on this. I wouldn't be surprised if WhatPumpkin does shut down because they couldn't gain the sales needed after releasing Hiveswap Act 3. People will probably wonder if even buying stuff from Topatoco would help or not with HS merch like the prints slowly resurfacing. Drawing in the crowds from old and new to play the game will be tough. I wouldn't be surprised if Hauntswitch was first made in mind before Hiveswap. Dammek even had a 3D model ready too.

Likely back when it was still a 3D game, we would control briefly but then after the cutscene of them being transported to the other planet, we would then have to take control of Dammek, have him meet Jude to possibly have him find a way to help him back home, and the pair would adventure on Earth itself for the rest of the game to find out about the monsters and the cult. Dammek's paranoid nature would play off Jude's conspiracy theory pretty well as it has the two involved looking deep into the mystery. I wouldn't be surprised if something about the cult would eventually tie in to his home planet and the rebellion as a final grand twist. An idea like that sounds more interesting than some girl getting lost on an alien planet and was roped into some rebellion that she has no reason to be part of besides being concerned for a friend.

so, lance and veronica like kuron- i think thats very fucking cool for multiple reasons- but does that extend to other members of their family? i think it would be funny if they just decided to adopt this weird fucked up guy into the family<3 though knowing your au, i have a feeling things arent that simple in this situation....

Honestly that is a good question, cause i didnt even factor in Lance's other family members. My instinct is, "obviously yeah Lance's family love strays, they'll see Kuron's pathetic little meow meow ass and bring out the adoption papers." However given the entire family is already a bit fucked up right now, i dont think that would happen immediately and also i have like 3 options.

1.Veronica doesnt say shit and is a lying liar who lies- pretty much everyone here is bad at communication and to be fair this is like a very weird ass situation to even process let alone explain, so when Veronica gets a call from her mom, she thinks back to when Lance was missing and everyone was having a really hard time and than the Galra came and then they were having even more bad time and Lance comes back and war ends and i think Lance and atleast his parents move to Altea¹ and while she wasnt around much things were fine? She guesses? And then Lance runs away and they were all having a bad time again and Christ alive Lance their parents are in their 60's their hearts cant take this anymore.

Anyway Vero remembers all this and she hears her mom asking if she found anything on Lance and she goes, "yyyuuupp in fact i actually found Lance! He's umm.....he's sleeping right now! Yup! He's definately fine! That is right! He just needs a little space and was uhhhh.....helping out a friend, he will definately call you if- When he wakes up!!! I will tell him to call you back, we are going to have a long chat anyway! Dont worry mom! He's ok :)!!!"

She'll definately tell them!! Eventually! The time is just isnt right yet!! The fact she is ready to full on "Weekend at Bernie's" this shit doesnt mean anything!! She'll figure it all out and then Lance will wake up and she'll fucking kick his ass for doing this and everything will go back to being normal!!! This will not come back to bite her in the ass and her family is Not getting Suspicious at all!!!

In this scenario Lance's family never meet or even know about Kuron. In case they do eventually find out he'll kind of go overlooked cause 1) they just found out Lance is in a coma. 2) they just found out Lance has been in a coma for a long time. 3) they just found out that Veronica knew and she lied to them! 4) they just found out that Lance is uhhhh not doing Great. Supernaturally. Kind of makes it hard to pay attention to other major elephants in the room. (This could be where Kuron can stand up for Veronica and be like "look none of you are ok! Veronica isnt ok! Lance certainly wasnt ok! And things are not ok and they have changed irreversibly and all of you are hurt! And you know what that is ok! But we all have to acknowledge that hurt!" And something else super cheezy along the lines.)

2. Veronica tells her family only like half truth- in this Vero still trying to process the situation kinda just tells her family that Lance is in a coma but not about Kuron or magical shit. So to the family Kuron is Lance and Vero's weird friend who is really all over the place but ultimately a good friend who is just trying to help and be supportive and is kind young man with good head on his shoulders 😊 (they do think he should stop with his self destructive habits like they arent going to judge but smoking isnt good for you :/). The option where Kuron is adopted the fastest. Meanwhile Kuron is kind of being crushed by guilt. Like logically he understands that Lance's condition isnt his (Kuron's) fault, but at the end Lance did drop into coma to bring him back so he does feel a bit responsible. So it's just Kuron screaming internally.

Obviously the family isnt doing great at all. But i also feel like few of them (maybe few of the siblings) saw something like this coming. It's either because Lance was very clearly not ok before he ran away and also they have gotten just so used to this bullshit that they are just numbed to it. It doesnt make it any better but man just tough times for area family.

3. Veronica tells everything- Basically Vero and Kuron tells her family everything they know. Naturally family has mixed reaction towards it. Atleast few members arent surprised that Lance went and did this for a friend. One of them is really heartbroken and angry and most definately lashed out on Kuron and i think Kuron lashes back. There are those who are a bit uncomfortable but more because they really do not get the situation cause like what do you even do? Atleast one of them is also angry at Lance for repeatedly running off and pulling this stunt and doesnt he know what everyone is going through because of him? Just all around fucking mess everyone. It's tearing the family apart.

¹ Yeah i think Lance and his mom did move to Altea. I did actually watch the last ep just skipped to it and in the ending credits he seemed to be in Altea cause of fucking course he is. It's not like he spent the whole fucking show missing Earth or the fact that him being a normal human of Earth was a fundamental part of his narrative, nooooooo he is A-ok with moving to Altea and not even to help in rebuilding the universe but to be a fucking farmer and "tell Allura's stories" or some shit, cause yup that's all his character is! Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?

You know he does things to hurt himself long time by simply Not Thinking About and not Addressing things which can cause issues when they force themselves to be addressed... but otherwise he really is trying his best for multiple reasons. Now i think this might change soon and he may really lean into I am a Tool For Julius and nothing else. But I am hoping if that happens it is temporary.

ok so i got this one more than once so im gonna answer by going far back in his past this time and then the next one more recently.

his ex in high school got beat up by police and he fled - imo validly, he couldnt have done shit, but if instead of fleeing he tried to do something it would have certainly fucked up his academics more (legal issues, maybe suspension) but also strengthened his relationship with that person. I think if he had intervened he would have become, paradoxically, perhaps, more selfish, as he developed a more general love for humanity over the course of his historical studies. doing this would have made him a bit more jaded early, and instead of caring about ppl in General would have made him care about Specific People (his ex was a lil self centered lol would have rubbed off on him). from there he could have gone down a LOT of life paths but would have never caught the attention of Julius (his sire) because he did so through his academics - so would have likely just been a human guy.

you cant tell me donnie isnt traumatized after being much more than others painfully aware of just how dire the situation with the krang was because theyve never had to use the escape pods before, after getting his battle shell destroyed and nearly getting killed without it before getting swooped into the death trap that has become of the turtle tank where he along with mikey was seconds away from being crushed before april came in to save the day; after fusing with an alien spaceship which might not have been painful, but looked very disturbing to him personally nonetheless (at least before he rejoiced at the fact of becoming one with a cool piece of tech)

to reiterate, obviously leo and cjj have gone through a LOT and are severely traumatized as a result. but lets not forget the rest of the family just because they didnt break every bone in their bodies, but broke only a few instead.

2012 Leo deserves to go a little apeshit

So you remember a couple of months ago when I mentioned how 2012 Leo in the Krang Apocalypse future creates a reverse version of the Healing Hands that instead of the user using their own energy to heal it instead takes away the energy of others and give it to the user while also corrupting the user's soul?

You remember how 2012 Leo ends up in the 1987 dimension?

That deadly power was born from pure grief and pure RAGE when all three of his brothers died on the same day.

Something similar is going to happen

2012 Leo searches everywhere for his brothers, as 2012 Raph, Donnie and Rise Donnie all jumped into the portal to the prison dimension to try and save Rise Leon before they got separated in a massive flash of light and a loud explosion.

So when 2012 Leo ends up in the 1987 dimension ALONE without his brothers after everything that happened in the Riseverse...he's gonna assume that they're dead. (He doesnt have any evidence of this aside from Rise Leo's cracked katana that fell through with him, but he doesnt have any evidence proving that theu arent dead either. Logically they probably ended up in different dimensions as well but 2012 Leo is far too stressed to be thinking logically right now)

And then he sees the 1987 Technodrome in the distance and. He. LOSES. IT.

The only thought on his mind is "Dont let my brothers die in vain. Avenge them!"

He breaks into the technodrome and as soon as he locks eyes with 1987 Shredder and 1987 Krang.

God help them.

He goes absolutely feral, trying to rip and tear them and the entire Technodrome apart.

Shredder and Krang are completely outmatched and it only gets worse when 2012 Leo grabs Shredder by the throat, the rage barely contained.

And thats when it happens.

The rage reaches a peak, burning like fire under his skin. A deep hatred for the man squirming under his grip triples in size.

The fire needs fuel.

2012 Leo screams out his hatred for this man, an alternate version of monster that murdered his father a year ago, allied with an alternate version of the monster that killed his younger brothers. He feels nothing for Shredder but pure hate. Pure fury.

Pure rage.

While howling winds swirl around the pair, seemingly also screaming inside the Tehnodrome, something shoots up his veins.

Burning hot yet icy cold, zapping all through his body and growing stronger by the second. It settles around in his body like a parasite, demanding MORE MORE MORE.

The look on Shredder's face while his life force is ripped away is horrifying but god does Leo love watching that man suffer.

A lazer cuts through the storm, burning Leo's shell. He looks over at 1987 Krang, the rage growing even stronger. He drops Shredder, allowing the man to live before charging.

He moves so fast Krang cant even move before his metal body is being furiously clawed to shreds, metal swirling around in the trashed Technodrome. He grabs Krang and rips him from the remains of his mech suit, gripping him so tightly.

Just as he's about to literally tear Krang in half, the 1987 turtles come in to see one of their friends causing this much destruction.

And so begins the plan to try and calm 2012 Leo down, but he doesnt exactly WANT to calm down. He wants Krang's blood splattered all over the walls. Its a difficult thing, trying to talk down an enraged, grieving turtle that is one of your friends.

Eventually the only one that can at least get 2012 Leo to cool it with the murderous rage for a few minutes is 1987 Raph (purely because he has the same voice as 2012 Donnie and Leo would naturally calm down if he thought Donnie was here)

yo. not sure if ure the right person to ask but idk where else to go. i recently came back to apex and am trying to catch up w the lore except im a bit confused. i knew octane hated his dad and was working under him to fuck him over later but now he fell for his dads BS? or am i missing something? and i heard his dad isnt even his dad but his grandpa and im just confused.

okay so, not entirely sure when you left or how much you know of the current storyline but quick recap, octane's abusive POS father does some terrorist shit and continuously ridicules him and disowns him in that one season 9 comic, then starts running for Syndicate Head Honcho in season 12 after some fuckery framing maggie for the destruction of olympus.

obviously concerned about his father who is uhhh an evil terrorist (not like maggie, the cool terrorist <3) octane tells lifeline he'll break into his father's safe to gather some info. duardo catches him, but basically like. bribes octane into 'working' for him and octane agrees because he's like teehee!!! i'm gonna screw him over!! che will be sooooooo impressed

then over the course of the quest duardo continuously praises octane and convinces him that he's doing good things by donating to the Frontier Corps. the climax of the quest is lifeline managing to break into duardo's safe while octane finds a video on his computer from a press conference where duardo seems to confess that he loves his family more than anything and that his son is very important to him.

the secret in duardo's safe is his own death certificate. lifeline wants to expose him. octane wants to wait it out and see what happens and might be a little emotionally vulnerable from the whole shebang (as is lifeline tbh cuz she likes to take the whole weight of the outlands on her shoulders), so some petty arguing ensues but it escalates until octane grabs the certificate from her and burns it. they break up as friends officially and both remark that their friendship has been dead for a long long time.

fast forward, octane apparently helps 'duardo' campaign but doesn't question him until the night of the election where he wins, and duardo announces he's taking over lifeline's organization and installing her mother as the new head. octane confronts him after the election, devastated and angry at the idea that duardo had played him. his 'father' insists he hasn't, so when octane demands to know his true identity he tells him: torres silva, his grandfather, and continues to gaslight octane into thinking he's doing it For The Family. in the epilogue, lifeline teams up with maggie to do some terrorist girl shit herself.

so the quest ends with lifeline and octane on opposite sides, and also the reveal that the video that made octane think his father actually cared about him was in fact his grandfather talking about his father LMAAAAAO

how eager / thrilled / willing he is to work with torres seems to fluctuate a little and hasn't really been explored since. on the one hand, he shows moments of anxiety about the whole situation like in this image in the newcastle teasers where the description explicitly says he's nervous about the whole thing;

and in the final chapter he seems genuinely upset and freaked out about the fact that lifeline's mom has taken over the frontier corps, who he thinks is 'not cool' (so true bestie)

he also seems to occasionally be suspicious of torres, right now when you drop in certain areas of the new map (Broken Moon), if he's alone (and notably, *only* if he's alone) he will ask himself what torres wants with the place.

on the other hand, he seems...Fine with engaging with torres still? and maybe even helps him do shitty things? it's implied in this interview between seer and lisa stone that torres paid her to pin the blame of boreas's turbulance on seer, and the way octane reacts after the interview seems to imply that either a.) he knew what torres was planning and is amused or b.) he didn't know, but regardless, was very amused by what torres did to him.

in a loading screen torres also says this (context: they are filming a PR video apologizing for the giant sea monster attacking the legends)

it's not outright confirmed octane still helps him do his political shit after campaigning with him, but it's likely. he also helped pitch boreas as a new apex map to torres with seer and still seems very engaged with him despite the bombs dropped at the end of s12. given that he helped seer pitch boreas, and questions (alone) on cleo about what torres wants with the moon, he seems to suspect something is up, but he isn't as open about it as others and seems kind of hesitant to say anything.

so. the verdict;

i get what apex was trying to do in the season 12 quest. torres DOES start love-bombing octane all of a sudden, which makes octane give literal pause like Twice because "what?? he called me son???? he's never done that before ??????" (<- transgender btw) and i think they were hoping to give the impression that octane is gaslit and manipulated into siding with torres. the narrative also acknowledges that octane's actions are Extremely selfish here and driven entirely by emotion and wanting to feel loved than any sort of logical reasoning or 'greater good' like he insists.

that being said, it really needed more time in the oven. he goes REALLY quickly from "i'm gonna trick him!! teehee!" to burning one of the very few bridges he has and possibly throwing the entire outlands into turmoil because daddy said he loved him once. then it goes very quickly again from "octane unconditionally supports his (grand)father because he is desperate for his approval" to now "octane may in fact regret this and be very suspicious of him" but the latter thing is kind of up in the air given that octane still actively works for him and seems to do a little bit of villainous shit himself.

right now, i think they are intentionally going with a rather messy narrative because like...abuse is messy. family is messy. being manipulated and gaslit and you yourself manipulating and gaslighting your friends and repeating this cycle of abuse because your abuser suddenly pretends he cares about you because he wants to USE you for political gain is a very messy story and it always would have been.

i don't think octane 100% is onboard with torres or fell entirely for his BS, but i don't think he hates him either or what he's doing. it seems like there *IS* a part of him that cares for people Other than himself, but octane's focus is kind of on Me Me Me and right now what matters to Me Me Me is the fact that HE feels loved and gets what HE wants, outlands be damned, and admitting he was wrong means that torres does not love him, and that che was right. and since he also happens to be very petty he doesn't want to admit she was right since they're fighting rn LMAO

i think the story suffers from the main problem with All of apex's storytelling which is just that there wasn't enough time to sit with what it presents but overall i think this is like. fine. almost good, even. one of the better characters arcs apex has going for it right now.
