a. Episode 9: Zhou Hua Jian is on stage, patting his face with a tissue after his and Yi Qiao’s performance, and Li Keqin basically decides to throw Zhou Shen under the bus. 

ZS, talking discreetly to LKQ about ZHJ: Why does he consistently carry those tissues to absorb facial oil? haha 

LKQ: *lightbulb moment* ...Ask him in a moment.

ZS: !...I don’t want to. Haha *cutely, with his arms in a cross* No!

LKQ, raising his hand (to ZHJ): Wait a second, just to ask... Earlier, when you finished singing, the young singer next to me had a question he wanted to ask you.  (ZS, pointing at LKQ in disbelief: EEEEYYY )

b. Episode 9: Football cut, Li Keqin had told Zhou Shen that if he could shoot the ball into the goal, he could choose the song. If not, Li Keqin would choose. The result’s not surprising.

LKQ, each of them sitting on a football: I’d like a song with a lot of long notes.

ZS: A lot of long notes right? *thinks*

LKQ: Actually, I used to have this song called “Great Concert Hall” *demonstrates a little* But I’m scared that you’ll have to sing in Cantonese again -- it feels like each time, I’m bullying you. *snorts*

ZS, kickstarting broadcasting mode: Not at all. Why would everyone else think that you’re bullying me? They’ll just think that you’re giving me an opportunity to practice my Cantonese. *impish smile*

LKQ, patting ZS on the shoulder: Good kid. (Both crack up)

They talk about Han Hong’s “Tian Liang Le” and its sad backstory and ZS does a K.O on Li Keqin with his “my every song are my children” line. (already translated)

LKQ: What else is there?

ZS: *sings a little bit of “That Sea” / “Na Pian Hai”* (LKQ: Ohhhh! )

LKQ: *sings along* Eh, this song is really good. (ZS: It is a really good song.) But if we really decide to sing this one....we might have to make some changes to it.

ZS: Truth be told, if it’s a duet, it will already be a little differen-- eh? At the end, wasn’t it supposed to be you choosing the song? Why am I giving so many ideas?

LKQ: Eeeh, we’re a teaam... (ZS: Aaaahh) Okaayy *snaps fingers* (ZS: As expected of senior singeeers *snaps fingers with him* Role model artists are just differennnt) LKQ: It’s like you and your every song being your childreeenn. (Both start laughing again) 

c. Episode 9: During Qin Shen Shen’s performance, Li Keqin’s earphone monitor fell during his high note and was basically hanging behind his butt for the rest of the song. At the end of the song, the MC points it out:

MC: Elder brother Keqin, had you realised that it fell?

LKQ, no shame whatsoever: Yeah. *clears throat* 

ZS, very impish: Haha!

LKQ: So I was scared that this...this young person here *designates ZS* (ZS: You’re young too.) ...would feel embarrassed, so I...tried to give it my maximum. 

 ZS, using the polite form of “you”: Ah, no, no, no. Please do not say that. I am scared. *still laughs* 

Fun fact:  Li Keqin’s earphone monitor fell in Zhou Shen’s presence not once, not twice, but three times: once here, once in Episode 12, and one time during their 2020 New Year’s concert event (Ye Lang Disco) after which Li Keqin probably couldn’t hear the music anymore and looked like he had to find his rhythm back by reading Zhou Shen’s lips.

d. Episode 9: Backstage room. Even though they’d introduced what they’d sing as “That Sea”, what they sang is actually a combination of “That Sea” and another song called “Listen to the Sea” ( “Ting Hai”). Li Keqin explains.

LKQ: Actually, I think those two songs’ lyrics overlap quite a bit. So...I thought, if we could mix them together, it could give a bit of a ....... *wiggles silently while looking at ZS*

ZS (to the camera), translating: ...a nice surprise!

LKQ: A nice surprise! Yes!

e. Episode 9, after each group wished Li Keqin happy birthday using their own musical way. 

MC (to LKQ): So the show’s staff team doesn’t really have a birthday present for you, but we’ve found a very special song and through this song, we’d like to ask you a question, is that ok? *the staff puts on a song*

LKQ, thinking briefly before nodding: Mm.

MC: Elder brother Keqin, this song is very meaningful to you. 

LKQ: Of course. I used this song to enter a competition (T/N: the competition thanks to which he debuted).

MC: 34 years ago... (LKQ makes a face) you used this song to win a singing competition.

LKQ: Yes, at 2 years old. 

ZS laughs. LKQ, next to him: ;;;;;;;;;;;

Li Keqin then explains how, at the time he won the competition, he had signed up for college (he was actually 18) and told his parents to give him 2 years, if after 2 years there were still ppl willing to sell his CDs, he’d stay in the industry etc. etc. 

f. Episode 9: Easter egg at the end of the episode, i.e. Zhou Shen rallies the other participants one by one and organises a bday surprise for Li Keqin. 

ZS (visiting ZHJ): Hello teacher Hua Jian.

ZHJ, while asking ZS to sit: Eeehh! Hello little Zhou (ZS: Hello, big Zhou) Old Zhou finally meets small Zhou.

Zhou Shen explains that he wants to do a bday surprise for Li Keqin. Zhou Hua Jian replies that he’ll think of a few lines to sing to him, including writing a few lyrics, which Zhou Shen finds to be great. 

ZS, bullshitting: Then...Then the day after tomorrow is my birthday, can you also write a song for me? (both crack up)

ZHJ: Let’s talk about that tomorrow. (Both crack up again) So, now that I’m already going to put in work for him *grabs ZS’s arm* what are you guys singing tonight? *laughs*

ZS: Ahh! *slides away on his chair* We’ll sing whatever you’ll sing!!

ZHJ: Hey, no need to slide away on your chair like that! (ZS slides away even more)

(Later, when Zhou Shen visits Ren Xianqi) RXQ: So, what you’re saying is that you’d like to give him a “surprise” (said in English). 

ZS: Yes. 

RXQ: How do you want to do it? Splash him with cake?

ZS, laughing: That’s not a “surprise”, that’s a “shock” (also said in English).

Zhou Shen then says he also needs the younger singers’ help and visits Ayanga first. They say hello and start acting needlessly formal.

ZS, in an uncharacteristically deep tone: May I ask if this is gentleman Ayanga?

AYG, in the same tone: It is.

ZS: I am gentleman Zhou Shen. 

AYG: Please sit.

ZS, shaking his hand, still acting formal: Tonight, I need your help for something. 

AYG, playing along: Tell me.

ZS: Tomorrow....*switches to mischievous whisper* ...is teacher Li Keqin’s birthday!!

AYG: Then what do you have?  Do you have cake? *laughs*

ZS: Of course. A birthday surprise should of course have birthday cake.

AYG: Is it those cakes that have multiple levels and are really high?

ZS: Full of peaches.  (ZS cracks up and looks at the camera) No need to broadcast this (T/N: Not too sure, but I think there’s an inference with peaches and old people?)  Anyways, I’ll count on your cooperation, Ga Zi Ge. (AYG: Of course! Such a good thing) See you later, gentleman Ayanga.

AYG: Ay. Ms. Zhou Shen-- (ZS, holding him down: Don’t stand up.) 

Zhou Shen then realises what he said and hits him while Ayanga laughs. Zhou Shen finally visits Xiao Zhan.

XZ: What do you need me to do? 

ZS: Push the cake trolley!

XZ: No problem, I’m the best at pushing cake trolleys! 

ZS: Ah, really? Then ok, thank you. *shakes his hand*

XZ: Ah, that’s it? Whoa, this surprise is pretty easy to do!

For the surprise itself, Zhou Shen hides behind the sofa in the backstage room where all of the senior singers will come sit & chat. He lies down with a confetti cracker and his gift for Li Keqin. The seniors come in and start chatting about things, including their younger singer partners. Ren Xianqi mentions that whenever people see him and Liu Yuning together, they find Ren Xianqi’s legs really short (because Liu Yuning is super tall), and Li Keqin picks up:

LKQ: Well, my partner is not easy to work with either!

ZS, hidden behind the chair: ????? *narrows his eyes*

LKQ (to the others): You (RXQ) said just now that after working with yours, you found out that your legs are very short. Well, me? After working with mine, I suddenly found out my key is very low! 

Zhou Shen laughs silently behind the sofa, while the seniors agree.

RXQ: Right, Zhou Shen’s singing key is really high. 

LKQ: Yeah, my key is like here, and his is there! *demonstrates the gap with his hands*

ZHJ: That...that, we all know already. Doesn’t he have any other small problems/bad points? (RXQ: Right, any other small....?)

LKQ: ...No. No, he doesn’t. Appearance-wise, we match quite well. It’s very nice. 

ZHJ: *chortles* He makes your legs look long. 

All the seniors laugh, and Zhou Shen feigns being hurt behind the sofa, rolling his eyes. 

ZHJ: He really doesn’t? Not even a small problem?

LKQ: No, no. I find him very fun. He just doesn’t like sports. So I’ve asked him, what do you usually do at home? And he told me... “I lie down at home”. That’s it! (ZS is covering his mouth behind the sofa) So each episode, I take him out to play a sport. (RXQ, interested: Eh? ) Yeah! Yeah, yeah. For the 2nd episode, we played badminton, and yesterday, we played football.

ZHJ: Oh, no wonder, no wonder -- I think he grew taller! (all the seniors laugh, and ZS also laughs behind the sofa) That fast!

Zhou Shen finally makes the confetti cracker explode, scaring all the seniors. Li Keqin is in complete ????????? mode while Zhou Hua Jian is already dying of laughter at seeing Zhou Shen come out from behind the sofa. Li Keqin finally sees Zhou Shen and jumps to his feet:

ZS, vaguely threatening: Teacher Keqin~ 

LKQ, dying of laughter but also cowering: Eiyo, yo, eiyo, ey... Whoa! You’ve been hiding there for this long?? 

RXQ: You want to scare us to death?

ZS: From the beginning, I’ve marked down each and every single one of the bad points that you’ve raised about us young singers. (ZHJ laughs) I shall transmit them to the others one by one. But especially you *grabs LKQ’s arm* What you said was exceptionally truthful. 

LKQ, opening his mouth like a goldfish: Thank God I praised you a tiny little bit in the beginning, huh? Otherwise I’d be done for, huh? *makes space for ZS on the sofa* Sit, sit, sit...

The other young singers finally come in with the cake and more confetti crackers, thus completing the surprise.

Episode 9 bonus, not a QSS moment, but the others’ comments on their performance: 

FYQ, on behalf of him and Ayanga: Really, really really. This definitely needs written notes. (...) These two have already collaborated multiple times; there’s plenty of chemistry. And especially Zhou Shen...his voice is multi-layered, it keeps piling upwards...... Li Keqin’s voice is SO stable! You sang these songs of yours, changing back and forth, it made us really enjoy it... *remembers his killer line* The score will definitely be high. (T/N: he says that line for every group throughout ep. 9) 

ZHJ (about FYQ): It sounds a lot like a report on the situation of the stocks market. 

ZHJ, on behalf of him and Yi Qiao (about LKQ and ZS): I feel like this group, from ep. 1 onwards, they’ve kept levelling up (...) We will work hard too. In the future, when we grow up, we’ll definitely learn from you. *laughs* 

AC, on behalf of her and Xiao Zhan: Oh, I was closing my eyes earlier on and thinking ‘where did this girl come from? Her singing is so beautiful! (ZS looks to the side, embarrassed) (...) Especially, these two, they have a kind of...It’s like, when we used to do acting in the past, the director would tell us that acting is like a ball game, if one side’s ball falls to the ground, the scene won’t look good. This scene (referring to Qin Shen Shen) looks really good.

RXQ, on behalf of him and Liu Yuning: I think it’s really pleasing to the eye. Especially the stage design, and those two looking like they’re looking at each other across the sea, and then slowly, slowly getting back together. It makes you feel the sea waves coming and surrounding you. *appreciative sound* Good. *thumbs up*

Sougo driving the bike off the road and then ducking beneath the curb to hide from Geiz reminds me of Emu, in full golden-dreadlock mode, hiding behind a corner from the people-turned-bugsters and peeking out like a little kid.

The small twelve year old--er... Sorry, sixteen year old--is playing hopscotch w/ the dead guy. That they just... Left there? I guess Geiz popping up did distract everyone.

And... As I suspected, he’s back. Well--suspected bc preview images, but... Ya know.

Woz! That actor is having a lot of fun and I appreciate it. I’m wondering if they had to do that scene multiple times bc he had trouble pulling the hood up smoothly.

The fact that he disappeared from the outside the temple just to appear immediately at Sougo’s house is both unnecessary and hilarious.

Also: ‘I Woz-proofed my house, but he still got in!’

Aw, Geiz is a good boo. I guess maybe he and Tsukuyomi were going back to find Another Build when... Another Build found them.

And Sougo’s here! Yeah, thinking about it, saving his life is probably one of the best things you could do to make Geiz pause about killing you--given that future you tried to kill him, it’s an antithesis, so... Did that make sense?

On that note, I think Woz told him were they were/that Geiz was fight Another Build? I know he said Geiz’ name while invading Sougo’s house. Where was Junichiro in that scene, anyway?

You know, while I do mostly agree that maybe they coulda waited an ep before diving into the Build cameo, I think they may have been trying to use it to establish the ‘schtick’ of the season so to speak (at least the beginning schtick--like how w/ Build it was ‘find and fight Smash’ and w/ Ex-Aid it was ‘find Bugster Virus patients’) using a Rider that, as it had just finished, everyone was already familiar w/. Though in regards to that, obviously they start w/ Build bc he’s the most recent. But the point is, I’m thinking it may have been meant to be the ‘tutorial’ or ‘introduction’ incident of the series. I could be wrong ofc, and like I said, I do think would probably have behoved them to wait an episode, I think I get why they did it this way. That... May have made no sense. I’m sorry.

God, even in this small scene, the chemistry between these two remains amazing. Glad Eiji and Atsuhiro seem to be having fun.

So... I accidentally paused it at a moment where Sento looks like a scared rabbit and Ryuuga looks like he’s being protective. Cuties.

Also, I guess the Time Jackers are stealing the powers long-distance? Speaking of Evil Cutie Baby Boy (that’s his name, right?) there was a shot in the trailer of him freezing Build and Cross-z in time to harass Sougo. Wonder if that’s in this ep? (it probably is, and then I’ll be too lazy/stubborn to delete this bullet point later)

The teleporting Ride Watches strike again! Seriously, who made those things? They get around faster than mosquitos! ... Maybe.

So... What, it just had to get double-Rider Kicked, or just Rider Kicked twice to die? I am the confused.

Pfffft. Sento and Ryuuga screaming when they realise they’re hugging. Well, half hugging.

Oh! So... Something just rewrote time? So Sento giving Sougo the Build Ride Watch in 2018 creates a stable time loop for something that’s going to happen in 2017, which 2018 Sento remembers bc it’s his past, but that Sougo doesn’t understand bc it’s his future. Time travel.

Wait... Are we just completely nixing Sento’s actual first meeting w/ Zi-O? Bc even if it’s from Sougo’s future, it’s from Sento’s past (the movie), and the Sento of now should remember it. Maybe. Though maybe that got retconned so he forgot. Again. Time travel.

Oh! It did come back! Wait... Why did Sento and Ryuuga’s memories change when Geiz kicked it? Or... Maybe they just ‘reset’ like that every time it’s destroyed, and then when it respawns they get rewritten again. Or maybe talking is a free action.

Aw, poor Geiz has Rider Kicked too many times and worn himself out.

Oh. So they have to use the power of the Rider that the power was stolen from to destroy it?

Sougo correctly identifying Geiz as his secondary and handing him the Cross-z Ride Watch. Love them.

Aw! They ran Fast Like Sonic together! I think Sougo saving their lives is what’s making Geiz willing to work w/ him temporarily--not to mention the, er, Another Rider attacking people. Geiz is a good boy. But I’m sure he’ll get more hostile again once the situation is over.

It’s is Time Majin! I feel so deceived.

Oh! Hey, it’s the Best Match Boys again! Can they transform? Maybe. I honestly don’t care anymore. Not in a negative way, though. I’m more not bothered bc I’m enjoying this--if that makes sense?

So the format seems to be--they meet the Riders somehow (be it in the past, or in the present). A Time Jacker, meanwhile, goes back in time and creates Another Rider. So what our heroes have to do is find the Rider in the present and fix their memories--even temporarily--to get the Ride Watches from them and create a stable time loop of some kind, then go back to that time period (again, if they’ve been there before) and destroy the Another Rider there to set things to rights. So maybe more like the Riders are lending them a portion or piece of their power rather than it being ‘taken’ or anything, and they’re not really effecting the original flow of the previous story, just adding a scene were ‘monster that wasn’t a MOTW showed up and then some time traveler folks did, too.’  Ofc we’re only part way through the ep, so there could be other effects, I don’t know yet.

OH. MY. GOD. Another Build sees Ryuuga and then just... GLOMPS him. And shouting ‘BEST MATCH!’ While Sento just kinda is like ‘WTF?’

But oh boy is he probably gonna be mad at Ryuuga for rejecting him...

I guess the guy also got... Connected to Build’s memory somehow? Bc he was able to identify Ryuuga as Cross-z w/out any outside clues, and I don’t think it was common knowledge? After all, he was still a wanted criminal at that point, right?

Oh! They can transform, but it’s glitchy as hell. I see... But why is Ryuuga being glitched? I get Sento being effected, bc Another Build is, well, right there, but there isn’t Another Cross-z, so what’s happening w/ Ryuuga?

Well, either way, it’s still nice to see Cross-z’s original suit again. Shoulda said that last ep, too. That was a damn good suit. Glad they were able to keep it active, even just for these few eps. Might get scrapped after though. Still grateful, however.

Well, Sougo’s response to Evil Cutie Baby Boy seems to have won him some points w/ Geiz... You’re doing a good job making up for your poor communication in ep 1, honey.

Actually, one thing that bothers me about Uhr’s appearance is that the strand of his hair w/ the feather in it (that all the TJs have--yes, they’re TJs now) just cross right across his forehead and never moves and it’s kinda distracting.

Aw, look, boys, you’re already synchronised in putting your Drivers on. Ya’ll are gonna be friends whether you like it or not!

Well, we now know that Sougo can’t swim, I guess. Or... Maybe just not in the suit? Also, awwwww, Geiz pulled him out.

Woz here on par w/ Kogure for unexplained abrupt entrances. If there’s a crossover between Zi-O and LuPat, I really hope there’s a scene where they do it to each other or something.

Sougo looking around like ‘Ah! Where’d he come from!’ is really funny, too. He even looks up at the damn sky.

Also, I’m just gonna assume he’s got a Time Majin hidden somewhere. Unless there’s another way to jump through time they haven’t shown yet.

Oh and, hey, Woz smiled! Not sure if that was a good thing, but he’s got a nice smile.

Oh, wait... Are we gonna get Geiz’ reaction to Woz? Admittedly, Tsukuyomi only got to act surprised and ask what he was doing there (and got no answer), but Geiz hasn’t seen him yet. Does he know him, too?

Okay, I’m really liking the trend of people ignoring Woz’s speeches to do other things. Like the first time when Sougo was wondering at his transformation, and here where Sento whispers to him. It’s funny and I hope they keep doing it. I’m also hoping one day (if Woz shows up to do this every time Sougo gets a new Ride Watch) that some day someone (probably Geiz or Tsukuyomi) is gonna shove him aside or at least tell him to shut up and he gets offended. Double funny if they cover his mouth.

Sento and Ryuuga just watching the math move slowly along. Sento doesn’t seem pleased. Ryuuga just looks confused.

Oooooh! I see! Now this adds to the formula. They give the Riders the Ride Watches in the past, so that they carry them w/ them and it... I dunno, learns about their power, or is just there and ready in the future present/when they’re needed. And that’s why Sento and Ryuuga had them in their pockets! Rest of the proposed format still holds.

Eh? Katsuragi? Though... His personality doesn’t seem different at all? And he’s still on good terms with Ryuuga... And... I don’t see how what happened there would change him into Katsuragi? Maybe... Something went wrong w/ the Another Build power return? Plus, when Sougo went to see them at Nascita earlier in the ep, it seemed like he was Sento then, didn’t it? I could have sworn Ryuuga called him that? So it’s not actually that big a change? I’m confused.

Geiz is just like ‘Tsukuyomi, I literally saved him earlier, I think it’s pretty clear I’m taking a pausing from being terminator for the moment.’

Hm. So he’s going to try and investigate why the alterations are happening? So maybe he figures it out and that’s why Sento is still Sento in the present? You know what, I’m not gonna worry about that stuff, it’s just gonna give me a headache.

Oh god, he comes downstairs and they’re both in his house, I love it. I guess Geiz saw the sign at some point, and when he decided to hold off on the killing Zi-O plan was like ‘oh hey, that could be useful!’

Sougo has the ‘I just woke up’ excuse for any nonsense he might accidentally say.

Tsukuyomi denies the handshake and Geiz is just like ‘hi, I’m gonna threaten you now’ (I assume that’s what he’s doing).

And then Geiz and Tsukuyomi reacting to the food (I guess it’s not what they’re used to--can’t tell whether it was a positive or negative reaction though).

Excited for next ep! Looking forward to seeing my grouchy emo surgeon son and his gamer ray of sunshine again! Seems he’s calling Emu ‘paediatrician’ instead of ‘intern’ now, hee hee. More primary-secondary friendship, give me more, MORE! Ahem. I also just really loved that particular relationship and I hope they get friendship interactions. Though I don’t think there’s been a Brave Ride Watch? Maybe there has and I missed it.

Miyo’s Anime of Various Notes 2017 Edition

This year was a good year for anime. I liked a lot of shows this year and I thought I would write up another one of these! Again, they're in no order really!

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Dragon Maid

Dragon Maid as a series has definite problems. There's some kind of gross fan service and some really unhealthy feeling fetish stuff, especially from what I've heard and seen from manga snippets. However, despite all that, Kyoani was able to polish this show up into a nice little story about a dragon and her love for the woman who saved her life..and drank with her a lot out in the boonies one night. It's a really nice story though of a lonely person slowly getting a new lease on life with new friends who happen to be dragons. There's lots of good little character moments and it's nice that all of the characters grow as time go on really, even when one just plays MMOs all day and writes curse doujinshi. Also I can't listen to the opening theme without getting butterflies in my stomach from cute lovey doveyness.

Girls' Last Tour Girls' Last Tour takes place in the shell of a world that is on its last legs. There are crumbling buildings, technology long since in use and even the occasional grave site. Really, the world itself is kind of bleak, but the story of Chito and Yuuri is not an overtly sad one. It's the story of how as long as you have each other, you've got all you need in life. Seriously though, there are some good heart warming moments in here. The girl's have weirdly cute wide Hidamari Sketch style heads against the bleak background but it works really well. It has some really nice music too:  the rain drops song in patricular is super duper chill and is just a joy to listen to.

Recovery of an MMO Junkie It's nice to see an anime about people my age, that might be why this one interested me at first. On top of that though, it's a show where one can find a lot of familiar stories, especially if you've touched an MMO at any point in time. First and foremost though, Recovery of an MMO Junkie is a story about relationships though and how helpful they can be. These don't pertain to just romantic ones of course. Friends are super helpful when you're having a bad time, and as the show goes on, you can see just how much the friends Moriko is making along the way mean to her. It's a cute little story with some very cute moments and character designs. Morimori-chan is one of my favorite characters this year and I support her in every way. Sakurai is also a very good boy of course.

Love Live Sunshine Season 2 Last year I had season 1 on my list and the trend continued this year. The girls in Aqours just seem so much more realistic in their struggles than Muse ever did in the original show. They don't always get what they want; life does not just throw out miracles like Chika wants it to. But they don't let it stop them, and the girls keep going because, to quote the opening "we got dream." Seriously though, I am consistently pleased with this show and it helps that my favorite girl got her own episode early on. Also the studio has FINALLY figured out how to make the CGI look good compared to the previous series' attempts. Good music, good girls, good show. It still has 2 more eps but I'm confident with placing it here in my shows of the year of note.

Little Witch Academia Little Witch Academia has been bouncing around through various OVAs for the past couple years, so it was nice to finally get to see this show...be an actual show. It has a few ups and downs, which mainly are wishing a few characters got more screen time, and one specifically LESS screen time, but it's a very nice show. It's got a fun doofy protagonist who is doing her best even though she is terrible at magic. It has a haughty rival, even though only Akko sees her as on the same level, a cute nerd pal who reads anime Twilight and a mushroom obsessed creepo who got vored by a slime monster. I really do not know what else you need me to say. It's by Trigger so it's beautiful to watch? It has a Moomin reference? You can see the dumb guy from Pawn Stars but anime? It's a really good show. Real good.

Restaurant to Another World This show is a guilty pleasure honestly. It's fun to see the weird fantasy creatures ordering, mostly Japanese, cuisine in an interplanetary restaurant, yes. The main draw though is seeing the wonderfully animated and drawn food though. Every week watching this just made me hungry and it was hard not to drool a lot of the time. The characters are all really fun, even if they're essentially all interspersed between episodes. Almost all of them get their own little spotlight episodes in conjunction with their favorite particular dish. Most of all, I'll never forget Restaurant to Another World for giving me so many furry vore retweets from a random image I got from an episode. It's a fun show you can watch in the background and just admire the tastiness. Just, you know, maybe eat dinner first.

Interviews with Monster Girls Interviews with Monster Girls is not Monster Musume, that's the thing I can stress the most about this. It's about a world where there are just...monster girls! Join our way-too-into-them sensei as he...tries to honestly just learn about the differences between the folklore surrounding various monsters and how it ties into how they actually live in society. Also root on for a succubus as she tries to just let her mature woman side fly. It's very rough being a succubus in a super packed society did you know? Seriously though, it's a nice little show that oddly has more continuity than you'd think since it's not just an episodic 4koma style show. It's also got a dumb vampire with a shirt that has a cape design on the back, it's great.

Kira Kira Precure a la Mode This was the first Precure I've watched as it was on-going so it's been a fun ride. It has a bunch of magical girls who are also animals but ALSO are desserts. It also has some of most fun looking CGI I've seen in anime before, but that seems to be what Precures are good at so it's not that surprising for series veteran watchers I'm sure. Either way, it's a good story about friends and fairies and sweets. It's made me want to bake dumb anime cookies for an upcoming con and fill them with kira*kiraru. It has a really fun ending theme too...well both of them really. I'll look forward to see what the Precures are up to next in the coming series, but I'll never forget these girls.

Umaruchan R I liked the original Umaru season well enough, but the second season has really been going all in on the fun. On top of that, a lot of the characters have gotten more screen time and more character development even. We learn more about Sylphin, Kirie and Ebina, and  Umaru and Taihei's sibling relationship is shown to be a lot nicer too. It's not like before where she was always just a terrible brat trash girl, now she's just that SOME of the time. You can tell they really love each other though, and not in a gross way that other anime like to do with siblings. Also it's shown just how being friends has helped the other girls, and even Umaru herself really. It's a good show and I'm glad that it managed to get better on its second at bat.

Big Gold Star Show

Kemono Friends Kemono Friends is...well It's not really a good show. It has a hilariously low budget and even worse CGI. It's a lot like a picture drawn by your 5 year old where it's not fine tuned yet but it makes you feel kind of good anyway. It has some really cute character designs of this bunch of doofy animals that are just living their lives. Whether it's going to battle every day against their long time rival, wandering ruins looking for coins or just singing to their hearts content, there is something about the Friends that just makes you root for them. It's not a show you need to watch, but you might just like it if you do. Sugoooooi~

Old Anime of the Year

These are shows that I watched that didn't necessarily come out this year but that's when I watched them. It's pretty simple!

Osomatsu-san Sheeeh! I watched this one on the recommendation of a buddy. A remake of a series from the 1960's about sextuplet brothers modernized into terrible dirtbag NEETs. This show is full of weird, often gross, things, but there's something about its manic humor that just speaks to me. The brothers are terrible terrible terrrrrible boys but you can find good points about them too. I've been watching season 2 as well this season so this will probably carry over into next year as an old anime of the year. Sooo...let's just say Osomatsu-san is an Old Anime of the Year 2016-2018. Ok? Cool!

Yuri on Ice I had this on last year's list of shows to look into and I'm very glad I continued it. It tells a really good story about gaining confidence and learning to feel good about yourself. Yuuri's journey along the way is wonderful. Because of that, this is another series I'm looking forward to the second season of to see where it goes. My only complaint was that it was a little repetitive but that's probably how sports anime go huh? I liked watching the routines and listening to the songs. It also has a great cast of side characters like Chris with the great butt, the weird vampire guy and Phichit, your best friend. There's also J.J. who is full of himself, sure, but there's just something fun about him still. Here's to more ice boys!

Konosuba Konosuba is a series full of lovable dummies. Like...execeptionally dumb. Like..super..SUPER dumb. But that's really what's so fun about them. I had some Ah! My Goddess vibes with the series' set up except Aqua is a much much much more flawed goddess than Belldandy ever was. Seriously though, this series takes the isekai/reborn in another world from our world genre and takes it in a direction that's actually fun instead of retreading the same old stories. It's got explosion mages, it's got really awkward paladins and it has a very put on dullahan who just wants to have his evil schemes go the way he planned. I need to watch season 2 still, and if it's more of the same, I'm in for sure.

Heart Catch Precure This show was actually my first Precure several years ago, but my buddy and I didn't finish it before. Since we had been watching the new show, we decided to double up and watch both of them at the same time. Heart Catch is honestly a delight and has some of the things I like most in a magical girl show. It has fun heroes, it has really doofy villains and it has a whole lot of heart. It's episodic sure, but it has a really great art style that just makes it even more endearing to me. Also, episodic magical girls with dumb monsters is why I loved the original Sailor Moon anime. I also enjoy that the Precures just punch and dropkick things as their first course of action. You just can't step to a magical girl that's gonna just pop you in the jaw.

Ugh show?

Gabriel Drop Out I don't know whether to call this show an UGH show or just an ultimately lame one. I know it definitely is a 1 or 1.5 character show though. The best character is sweet dumb demon Satania who the show seems completely content to just dump on whenever it has the chance. I do not appreciate that anime. I don't at all. Please do not bully this sweet evil girl because she does not deserve it. This show was not as heinous as last year's Kuma Miko, but one of the characters is for sure a bad bad ugh one.

Anime to Check Out

I have a few shows I've had on my list to look at, mostly on my Crunchy Roll queue that I haven't gotten on due to a crazy good Fall season/laziness. Here they are!

Alice to Zoroku I watched the first episode of this back in the summer and I didn't take the time to finish it up. I plan to fix that in the coming year since I like the premise and I really liked the old man especially. I look forward to learning more about them in the future!

The Ancient Magus' Bride This one I've mostly seen interesting looking pics of so I'm curious. I like cool skeleton wizard looking things and anime. This seems reasonable enough to me.

One Punch Man This is still happening right? Yea, definitely gonna watch that.

My predictions for Digimon Adventure Tri Movie 5 - Symbiosis/Kyōsei This Post is super long

The following are my predictions for Digimon Adventure Tri Movie 5, as it stands.

Okay so we know that Hikari is going to go through some kind of Dark Evolution to cause Ophanimon Fall Down Mode. In another post I commented on what I think will cause this but I’d like to reiterate it as well as expand upon it.

Okay so many people have already pointed out Ophanimon Fall Down Mode’s biography but in case you don’t know here it is, taken from digimon wikia:

“Ophanimon Falldown mode is a Fallen Angel Digimon. It is a form of Ophanimon that was so angry that it suppressed its own emotions and fell into madness. It swelled with anger at the world, where atrocious sins keep mounting no matter how many times they are purged, and it closed off its heart. In order to nip evil in the bud, it hunts whichever opponents it has judged to have become a barrier to justice, and tried to establish a world of what it recognizes as justice.”

Okay so this is great because I think it plays very well into who Hikari has been established to be as a character. Hikari has a very strong sense of justice. She gets upset at any violence and will do anything she can to stop it, like being kidnapped and taken to Vamdemon/Myotismon. In the Machinedramon arc when she sees the numemon being enslaved you see her very upset and she wishes for more power to stop it, which is granted. What I find particularly interesting about this whole episode is the facial expressions they gave Hikari when she is protecting the numemon, she looks like she is full of righteous anger and determination. Her desire to protect people gives her the power to make her digimon evolve and allows others to evolve. Now in this case she was right to attack the way she did but imagine if this was applied while what she was doing wasn’t truly righteous or she  perceived someone to be evil who wasn’t truly evil.

I’m predicting that the next movie is going to have some strong call backs to that episode, Digimon Adventure ep 49, the crest of light. So, it makes sense that Hikari will see something that upsets her, that she feels is truly evil and tries to stop it, but perhaps her feelings are clouded by anger and Tailmon evolves in the wrong way.

For example, Meicrackmon has now reappeared and it looks like she is going to be fucking some people up next movie, it’s obvious that Gennai is going to try to use her against the Chosen Children. So maybe Meicrackmon severely injures Taichi, a sin Hikari will not be able to forgive, and even if Meicoomon returns to normal Hikari still sees her as a threat and decides she needs to be eliminated.

I feel it’s a good time to bring up my Mei and Meicoomon predictions. I actually think that Meiko and Meicoomon will be the heroes of this next movie while Hikari will be a Villain/Anti-hero. Someone has already pointed out that with Meicoomon’s ultimate/mega on the poster her eyes are green instead of red. It’s been established through the past couple movies that when Meicoomon goes evil, such as when she kills Leomon or evolves into Meicrackmon, her eyes turn a shade of red, but when she is good her eyes are green. So, the fact that her eyes are green on the poster implies this is a positive evolution. In addition, take a look at Meiko’s stance in the poster, it is a stance often applied to heroes, standing tall with her hand against her chest as if holding onto hope and a look of determination on her face. I find this stance most often applied to heroes when they are facing a great challenge against a villain and must learn to believe in themselves in order to win. This does go along with Meiko’s development as she is obviously not a confident character and in the last movie she finally learned to confront what was wrong with her digimon, showing that she is gaining strength and learning to not be afraid or sit on the sidelines.

Compare this to Hikari in the poster. First off, we know that her digimon is definitely a negative evolution. Furthermore, look at her stance. She is turned away from us and her face is covered. I don’t think I need to argue that this is ominous.

So, going back to meicrackmon, I think there is a very strong possibility that Meicrackmon will do some harm during the fight with the chosen children at the beginning of the movie, possibly severely injure Taichi (I’m hoping for this like you have no idea) and then Hikari just loses it and even when Meicoomon is successfully turned back to normal (I’m going to throw it out there that Doctor Jyou restores Meiko to health cause that would be awesome, doctor jyou to the rescue!) Hikari is still going after her because she sees her as a threat that needs to be brought back to justice. There will be some kind of clash between Meiko and Hikari and Meiko will have to positively evolve to Mega in order to compete.

Going back to Ophanimon Falldown Mode’s bio, it says that she closed off her heart”, I feel like Hikari is kind of forcing Tailmon to close off hers. We know that Hikari thinks that Tailmon is better off without her memories but by eliminating the sad memories she also eliminates the good memories, she has closed off Tailmon’s heart to her friendship with Wizardmon and all the good that came from it. Hikari herself seems to have difficulty with this, she often sidelines her own emotions for that of others, she doesn’t complain or voice how she’s feeling because she cares more about others as showcased through Adventure 01 (this is something her and Sora share in common so I actually think it makes a ton of sense for Hikari’s storyline to follow Sora’s). I actually think Taichi also suffers from this complex a little but that’s a post for another day. I think this will also contribute to Tailmon’s Negative evolution.

Hikari has been shown to be very powerful, more powerful than any other of the Chosen Children, and she also has a strong connection on a spiritual level to the events going on since she is directly tied to Homeostasis. So imagine if she suddenly decided that she knew what was best for everyone and acted on her own, imagine the damage she could do, absolute power corrupts absolutely and Hikari has got a lot of power. I think Ophanimon falldown Mode will be a representation of what we will see from Hikari, a powerful character who believes with all their heart they know what is truly best and moves forward with little resistance.

Okay so on to Wizardmon. I definitely think he will appear and play a part in the next movie. Tri has been full of fanservice and it would be very weird if they didn’t bring back a fan favourite character like Wizardmon. Now recently I have subscribed to Miss-Doodle’s theory on how this might go down. You can read it here:

To summarize, she thinks that because Wizardmon does not originate from the digital world, he will not be reborn but instead appear as a ghost the same way he appeared in Adventure 02. This makes sense since to get rid of both Wizardmon and Tailmon’s memories of each other defeats the purpose of his return, what would then be the purpose of them interacting. She also believes that Daigo and Wizardmon should team up considering they both have close bonds to two female characters who have a lot in common. Anyway, read it, it’s really interesting.

I also think that Wizardmon is going to be the one to save Hikari and Tailmon and trigger a positive evolution. Many people think he will be brought back only to die again in order to trigger Falldown Mode but I think that would be such a waste and we’ve already seen that happen in Tri with Leomon. If they go that route I will be very disappointed, missed opportunity. I think we will get both a positive and negative evolution from Hikari in this upcoming film.

Ophanimon vs Holydramon. Okay I think what is going to happen is that when Tailmon is defeated or turned back to normal after her dark evolution I think she will lose her Holy ring as penance for her sins. Because of this she will evolve positively into Holydramon instead of Ophanimon. I believe this because it makes sense that Tri would want to give service to both the fans of Holydramon and Ophanimon, also it’s likely there are fans of both on the writing staff. In addition, I think this because we have seen a lot of Holydramon in the merchandise and that can’t be random.

Okay so going back to Taichi for a second. Like I said before I think he is definitely going to play a part in Hikari’s downfall. I believe this because Tri has often foreshadowed what will happen in the next movie in the movie prior. In this past movie, there was a lot of Hikari calling to her brother, I think this is hinting at their relationship playing a huge part in the next movie. We have seen in the past that she is very dependent on her brother. So, I already mentioned that I theorize that he may be injured to cause her downfall but I have a completely different theory as well, although it doesn’t perfectly line up with some of my other theories.

Taichi has been doubting himself a lot in Tri. In loss alone he doubts their ability to save Meicoomon (and although he says “will we”, I would argue he really means “can I”), he is upset that he can’t evolve Agumon to protect everyone, and then there are plenty of examples from past movies. I think there is a chance they may do a throwback to episode 48 of adventure when Taichi talks about how he fails to take care of Hikari and how he almost got her killed. Although I’m not sure of the details I would argue it is more likely that Taichi will trigger Hikari’s downfall by failing to protect her, or someone she cares about, in the following movie. Again, I’m not sure about the details but I just think it makes sense based on Hikari’s co-dependent relationship with him, his strong need to protect her, and the doubt he has shown in Tri.

#StrangerThings S2, Ep. 3 & 4 "Chapter 3: The Pollywog"/"Chapter 4: Will the Wise" Recap/Review

Chapter 3: The Pollywog

Dustin finds what was in his trash can at the end of last episode, while Eleven tries to disobey what Hopper has been telling her to do. As soon as Dustin sees what was in his trash can, he takes it and brings it inside and kept it as another pet. I feel bad for the pet turtle and his mother's cat. What he brings in looks like some kind of pollywog that can eat anything, mostly candy as Dustin as given him.

He shows the creature to the guys and Max and tries t figure out what it is and names it Dart. But soon Will hears the same scream that he heard from the creature that in the upside down world and freaks out. The creature soon runs off and the guys chase after it but when Will sees it and starts getting another episode in the Upside Down World, but this times tries to stick up for himself the way Bob had advised him, but the creature puts its shadowy arms through his mouth and ears.

Meanwhile, Eleven really wants to get out of the cabin and see Mike but Hopper isn't going to let that happen. He kept promising her that he will but it keeps being put off more and more (something parents would do all the time). As soon as Hooper leaves, Eleven wonders out and gets spotted by a mother and her child and tells the cops. But she moves on and tries to see Mike until she sees him with another person and leaves. I thought that "The Pollywog" was a very good episode. From the Hooper and Eleven story line to Dustin and the guys meeting and searching for Dart. I was in standing mode when Eleven and Mike were so close of seeing each other. I thought the writing of this episode was very good and the performance from Brown and Noah Schnapp was very good, some of their performances really stood out. Overall, I give this episode a 8/10.  

Chapter 4: Will the Wise

As Joyce rushes to find Will, other issues are happening as they come in this episode. 

As Joyce races to the school to find Will, she runs into Dustin, Lucas and Max and sees that Will is outside with Mike, in another trance of seeing the Upside Down and the creature. After he is awake, he is taken home and tells his mom as best he could what he sees and how he feels about it, but it really doesn't come out in words. The next day comes when Will doesn't feel good and shows a body temperature that's below any normal. He wouldn't take a warm bath saying that it was too hot and tells Joyce that he doesn't want to take a bath it get warm and walks out. 

As Joyce tries to call Hopper many, many, many times. He finally comes and tend to what was going on. He asked Will about what he has seen and felt but he just couldn't tell him so instead does it in drawing and at first it may seem to look like scribbles but really it's a huge puzzle that needed to be put together and sees blue vines and Hooper thinks of one thing and heads out to the pumpkin patch. More later. 

Dustin keeps Dart and leaves him home with more candy. Mike, Lucas and Max tries to find Dart around the school but still couldn't find it. Mike tells only Lucas and Dustin about the creature and how it connects to Will's episodes in the Upside Down. Mike goes over to see how Will is doing and asked Joyce about the creature he's seen. 

While Mike handles that, Lucas catches up with Max and tries to get her to come along to find Dart. But she doesn't want to after what Mike had told her that she's not a member. And the two break off as she heads to her so called brother's car (who by the way is a real pain in the ass if I may say). 

Nancy and Johnathan heads to meet with Barb's parents to tell them what really happen and gets caught with the DOE people and is brought to have a meeting with Owen. Thinking that they're plan didn't go through, it really did as Nancy recorded the conversation with Owen while inside the DOE building. WOW!

The one story in this episode that really got me was that of Eleven and Hopper. As soon as she comes back to the cabin, Hopper goes strict mean dad mode and tries to tell her that he's trying to protect her. But she thinks that he's lying to her and causes a big mess in the cabin. Hooper takes everything away from Eggos (NO!!) to even Television (NO!!!!!) but he couldn't left the television set because of her powers and just pulls the plug. After a night of cleaning parts up Hopper tells her that if she cleans the cabin that he'll repair the TV. 

While cleaning up the cabin she spots a hidden door that has boxes full of stuff and sees Hawkins Lab. She sees and looks through the files and comes to what is her file with her name and her parents. She does her ninja power with the radio and sees her mother but she goes away after hearing her call Eleven by hear name, Jane. 

The episode ended pretty creepy that at one time I had to look away because there's one scene that I knew that was coming. When Dustin comes home, he rushes to his room and sees that the tank that Dart was in has been broken and leaves a shed of skin. He turns and hears growing near the closet door and sees blood on the floor and walks towards it to see that Dart has grown and eating the cat. But Dart is shown as an early stage look to what the creature in Season One looked like with it's mouth opening like a planet. 

And let's not to mention that as soon as Hooper figured out the blue vines, he heads out to the pumpkin patch farm and digs til he spots something gross and blue. Also he goes into a tunnel that happens to look like what Will was seeing. 

"Will the Wise" was such a good episode that had some really good moments from the gross of Dart eating the cat to the sad moment of Eleven seeing her mother and not to mention that Hooper finding a tunnel of the Upside Down World. This episode has about everything to offer and then some. I enjoyed everyone performance. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
