IC-1805 has the colloquial name “The Heart Nebula” because of its shape. It is 7,500 light years distance from us, which is nearby, on a galactic scale. It is 165 light years in length.

The intense billowing red clouds of hot hydrogen contrast visually with the interspersed dark dust lanes. Most of this energy originates with the cluster of stars at the bright centre.

I photographed IC-1805 from my garden in Strasbourg France on 2 nights in September 2023. This is an aggregation of 61 photos, where each photo was a 5 minute exposure.

“Heart” Nebula,

Located in the constellation of Cassiopeia in the Perseus arm of the Milky Way galaxy and some 7,500 light-years from Earth is IC 1805. 

The reason for this name should be obvious: its two swooping wings resemble the shape of a heart, and it glows red from within -- classifying it as an emission nebula -- from hydrogen ionised into plasma by nearby stars. 

The cluster of very young, hot stars -- just 1.5 million years old -- in the centre of the nebula is known as Melotte 15. The nebula itself spans some 200 light-years across.

To some, this nebula looks like the head of a fish. However, this colorful cosmic portrait really features glowing gas and obscuring dust clouds in IC 1795, a star forming region in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. The nebula's colors were created by adopting the Hubble false-color palette for mapping narrow emission from oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur atoms to blue, green and red colors, and further blending the data with images of the region recorded through broadband filters. Not far on the sky from the famous Double Star Cluster in Perseus, IC 1795 is itself located next to IC 1805, the Heart Nebula, as part of a complex of star forming regions that lie at the edge of a large molecular cloud. Located just over 6,000 light-years away, the larger star forming complex sprawls along the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way Galaxy. Heart & Soul Nebula (HOO Palette) With cloudy skies over the past month, I have been working on multiple processes of my recent big projects, Heart & Soul as well as the California Nebula. I wanted to post this processing version first before jumping in any reprocesses of what has already been posted. Processing in HOO with a color camera and a dual narrowband filter is a lot more natural then processing in SHO because you do not have to simulate a Sii channel. I am leading with the starless version because it blew me away. Instead of using Starnet++ I have been using StarXTerminator and I 100% recommend it. Starnet isn't bad, but StarXTerminator has simply done a better and cleaner job in both stretched and unattached data for me. Astro Pixel Processor was used for stacking, separating channels, combining channels, and some back ground correction. Photoshop was used for final processing. .
