Time for bad decisions! \o/

The inside of the teahouse is...not quite what Rakha expected, to the extent that she knew what to expect at all.

Though it's a plain enough building from the outside, the inside barely seems constructed at all; grass and moss line the floor and walls, flowering plants sprout from every corner, and there's an enormous tree pushing up through the middle of the room and out through the roof. There's only one table, next to which is an ornate chair with a miserable-looking young woman seated in it.

And Ethel is there, looking none the worse for wear for whatever magic teleported her away from the men threatening her.

"I don't want to see a crumb left on that plate, girl," she's saying in a brisk, commanding tone as Rakha enters.

The girl clambers painfully from the chair. Rakha can see her swollen belly, the awkwardness with which she moves. She looks deeply ill, as nauseated as Rakha was at the scent of the Gur hunter outside. "Auntie Ethel, please," she whimpers. "One more bite and this pie is gonna come back up to say hello."

"Don't make me get the wooden spoon," Ethel snaps. "You're eating for two, so get to it!"

She turns, then does a double-take, registering Rakha's arrival. Immediately, the irritated expression bleeds off her face, replaced by a wide, welcoming smile.

"Ah! If it isn't my favorite flower!" she says brightly. "Welcome to Auntie Ethel's! Come in - come in! Feel free to relax yourself and have a cuppa, hm?"

Then she glances over her shoulder, her face suddenly imperious again. "Gods, grant me patience - eat up, Mayrina! I won't say it again."

Rakha feels, to put it mildly, off-balance. There's definitely something strange going on here - the girl looks miserable - but Ethel's treatment of her continues to be more pleasant than Rakha really has any other experience with, even from among her companions.

"You have... an interesting home," she says haltingly.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Ethel says cheerily. "It's my little refuge for the lost and hopeless. People in dire need travel from all over Faerun to see little ol' me. And I do my damnedest to help them."

She takes a step closer, pokes her finger gently into Rakha's shoulder. "And you, petal - well, you need a lot of help." Her eyes narrow with sudden, incongruous intensity. "That wriggler swimming in your brain juice is a bit of an inconvenience, isn't it?"

Rakha goes very still. Of all the words she expected to come out of this strange woman's mouth... those were not among them. At once, her interest in the girl at the center of the room vanishes and she peers at Ethel with wary curiosity. "How do you know that?" she asks hoarsely.

Ethel clicks her tongue with a shrug. "Because you stink," she says. "And I know the stench of mind flayer anywhere." She takes another step closer, the kindly smile back on her face but with a strange, unreadable edge to it. "I can tell you're almost done cooking. You know you could turn - just like that. What do you say? Want me to take care of the little bugger?"

Rakha's breath quickens. Another promise of salvation, another offer of help to line up along all the others, most of which have fallen apart before they began.

The man outside said Ethel offered help for a price - and that fools would take it. Rakha is no fool.

But Ethel was kind to her without cause, mere days after she awoke. She asked no payment.

(A/N: I'ma be real - part of me just wants to do this because I never have before, because it's very different from what Hector did, and because I like my characters to have a steady diet of poor choices to make life more interesting. However, I also have been intrigued this whole time by Durge's initial conversation with Ethel. It really is an unexpected dose of kindness completely out of proportion to anything else that has happened to them up to that point - and completely manipulative, of course, but at the time Rakha had no reason to know that.

I kind of like this as a character-based Bad Decision because it also plays on the progress Rakha has been making up to this point. She's slowly becoming more comfortable with her companions, trusting their opinions and guidance - particularly Wyll, who is distinctly kind and looks past her darkness.

And Rakha is basically taking in these lessons that she's learning and picking the exact wrong person to focus them on, and letting that overrule the logical deductions she would normally be making here.

On some level, too, she's definitely salty about having been dragged to the creche and having that not pan out, so there is a fine, I'll do it myself attitude also coming into play. >.<)

"Yes," she says, almost before she has fully thought the words through. "Get this damn parasite out of me."

Ethel grins. "My - I do like them eager. But know that I don't work for free. I expect payment up front." Her grin widens, showing her teeth. "One of your pretty little peepers." She gives a dramatic pulling gesture with one hand. "I'll pluck it from your head, kiss it for luck, then back in it goes. Won't take but a moment!"

Rakha stares at her. "You want one of my *eyes*? Why?"

"I'm afraid that's my business, petal," Ethel says blithely. "It's nothing nefarious though - I promise."

Rakha shifts her weight slowly from one foot to the other, squinting. "Will my sight be damaged?" she asks slowly.

"A touch," answers Ethel. "But sure you've two eyes in your skull, don't you? No need to be precious."

A long pause. Then Rakha nods, because Ethel was kind to her once and because the creche didn't work, and because she can feel the worm squirming in her temple with agitation. "You have a deal," she says.

(A/N: LOL. Unsurprising.

Honestly it's hard for me to justify NONE of these people stepping in and dragging Rakha away before she can do something stupid, so I'm inclined to say that the others absolutely were not paying attention until right this moment. Lae'zel is hanging outside the door looking around bc of the weird vibes the swamp was giving everyone, Wyll is focused on Mayrina's agitation, Shadowheart is busy checking out some of the potions on the shelves elsewhere in the teahouse. And everyone clocks the conversation right at the moment that Rakha makes the deal. Whoops.

"Glorious." Ethel smiles widely. "One moment. Auntie needs her real nails for this."

The Weave around them surges with sudden bright energy, and Rakha watches as the human woman's form shifts and twists with violent, cracking jerks, then settles into something new - almost as tall as Rakha herself, bulkier and sharp.

Around them, the illusion of the place fades, the sunlit wetland giving way to a dark, forbidding swampland. The building itself seems to shrivel, the flowers dying in an instant, the grass turning brown.

"Much better," Ethel says - the same voice coming from the new, monstrous face. "That human skin is fierce restrictive."

Rakha draws a slow breath and lets it out heavily through her teeth. So. The man outside was right, it seems. [WIZARD] "A green hag," she says flatly. "And a powerful specimen, it seems."

(A/N: By game mechanics this is a wizard line - but in this case I think it's really just Rakha putting together all the pieces she's been given up to this point, and conscious of the amount of magical manipulation that just happened.)

"Thank you, petal," the hag croons. Her voice has taken on a lower, gravellier tone - not so distant from Rakha's own growl. "It is so lovely to be appreciated. Magic is the lifeblood of hags. And I'm one of the best."

Lifeblood. Rakha feels a shiver of understanding at that. She too feels that way about how the Weave works its way through her with each breath. She knows nothing about hags beyond what the hunter outside told her; she has no idea if Ethel is telling the truth. But she suspects she is - at least about her power. Rakha can feel it in the air.

"Now choose..." Ethel murmurs. "Which eye will it be? Right or left?"

The last chance to back down. The beast in her head certainly wants no more to do with this - it sees the monster before them and wishes to rip and tear and break and smash and kill.

But in truth Rakha's decision is already made. She wants the worm gone. And on some level, unarticulated even to herself, she wants this woman's - this creature's - kindness to have been real.

Perhaps it is some deep, obscure flicker of sentimentality that leads her to say the same eye that Wyll is missing. "Take the right eye," she says.

(A/N: I think this is the point where everyone else clocks in on what's happening. XD Also I wonder what happens if you have her take Volo's fake eye. Will have to look that up later lol. )

"Hell's fires--" she hears Wyll shout from behind her. "What are you--"

Agony. Light bursts around Rakha's body, the Weave surging and bending and screaming along her skin.

"Hold onto your knickers," Ethel whispers in her ear. "This might sting a bit."

Rakha staggers. She can't see through the pain, but she's dimly aware of Ethel reaching out to her, and then a wrenching, yanking tug and a spasm of brighter pain, and then the hot scent of blood spattering on the wood floor.

Then an impact as if she's been struck across the face, a backwards slam that almost sends her off her feet.

Sudden silence. Calm. The pain ebbs, slowly fades out into a prickling numbness on the right side of her face. Her temple throbs.

"Now..." Ethel says coolly. "That wasn't so bad, was it?"

Check that your eye is still there.

It is indeed there. She paws unsteadily at her face, feeling a strange pulsing heat under her brow. Swaying, she turns and finds Wyll at her side. He looks grim, grips her arm, helping to hold her upright.

"That color suits you..." purrs Ethel. She reaches out her long-clawed hand again. "Now... unless you want tentacles for a tongue, stay absolutely still. I've removed one of these buggers before - but it's a touch tricky."

Pain again - this time a clearer sort, more familiar. The parasite, howling its objection to Ethel's intrusion.

Narrator: The parasite squirms at the hag's words. Pain builds behind your eye. You feel the creature writhe as it's dragged towards your ear... then it bites back, burrowing even deeper into your brain.

Rakha screams, falling to her knees as her vision whites out completely. She can hear an answering sound of similar agony from Ethel and finds herself taking a flash of savage pleasure from it.

"Aaaaaaaaaggghhhhh! Gods-damned wretched-- argh!"

Ethel towers over Rakha's fallen body, shaking with sudden rage. "You little shit! You didn't tell me it was Netherese! I'm not touching that!"

Rakha struggles back to her feet, trembling all over. "Netherese?" she whispers weakly.

"Filthy shadow magic," Ethel snarls. "Brings nothing but chains and misery. How could I have missed the stink? Like blood and piss congealing on my tongue. Bleh." She spits. "Someone's tampered with your parasite. That's likely why you've not turned yet."

Foolish, Rakha thinks, a stab of anger suddenly cutting through the pain - anger at herself as well as at Ethel. You knew that. Halsin told you as much. So did the guardian.

"I thought you could remove it," she rasps. Foolish. Foolish. I believed you.

"I can," Ethel says. "But that thing has been touched by more than mind flayers." She shrugs dismissively. "You're a dead soul walking. I can't help you."

"What about my eye?" Rakha asks.

Ethel sneers. "What about it? I held up my end of the bargain. It's not my fault the wriggler's tainted by shadow magic. I want nothing to do with you or that scum in your brain."

The anger shifts to rage - furious, helpless anger at having been used, misled, manipulated. It was all a trick, right from the beginning. The beast roars in Rakha's skull, feeding on the scent of the blood from her own face. Kill her.

"I'm not leaving," she growls. "This wasn't the deal."

"You're bloody right it wasn't!" Ethel screeches. "I agreed to remove an illithid spawn. That thing is an abomination!" Her voice quiets - only slightly. "But let it not be said that Auntie Ethel doesn't honor her debts. Here--" She shoves a putrid piece of bone into Rakha's hand.

"It's on you to fix yourself," the hag snaps. "Now get out!"

Before any of them can respond, she pivots on her heel. "Come now, Mayrina. Time to go!" she snaps. There's another burst of magic. She and the girl both vanish; Rakha can see the slightest shiver through the Weave, marking a path away and seemingly through the solid wall where the fireplace sits.

And then she's gone, and Rakha is left alone with her own foolishness.

Professor Christopher Lyon, who teaches at the University of York in the U.K., researched and concluded that Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) euthanasia law enables healthcare serial killers (HSK).

Lyon’s research was published by HEC Forum on August 2, 2024 under the title: Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying System can Enable Healthcare Serial Killing.

Healthcare serial killers (HSK) is not a new phenomenon. Lyon writes about several well known HSKs, and examines what enables them to remain undetected for long periods of time while killing their patients.

Lyon outlines his article by stating:

Criminal HSK appears globally. Offenders may kill fewer than ten to hundreds of people. They are often challenging to detect and stop due to job-related access to means of killing, responsibility for record-keeping, trusted role, professional insularity and protectionism, poor oversight, and victims whose deaths are less likely to attract suspicion due to age, illness, or existing likelihood of dying. Ambiguous or divergent legal and medical concepts and practices can make prosecuting HSK challenging.

He continues:

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), the expression frequently used to describe legal euthanasia or assisted suicide (EAS) in Canada and elsewhere, is currently available in several countries and under consideration in others. Beginning in 2016 with “no model…without standards, without guidance, without training”, Canada’s MAiD system is criticized as the most permissive or least safeguarded in the world, raising the question of whether it could protect patients who fit the clinical profile of adult victims of HSK from a killer working as a MAiD provider. Indeed, like the systemic issues that enable criminal HSK, concerns are frequently flagged that the risks stemming from the Canadian MAID programme’s ambiguous criteria, noncompliance with law and regulation, applications in mental illness, impact on clinical staff, and inconsistent oversight. Accordingly, assessing the Canadian system through the HSK lens is helpful in illuminating gaps in the safeguards and opportunities to prevent abuses by such an offender. This task is critical, as forms of MAiD are available or under consideration in many countries, and Canadian courts seem likely to maintain some form of its constitutional permissibility.

Rescuing Lae'zel has one last fun little wrinkle in the form of requiring a lockpick with DC of 25 in order to actually get her off the Altar of Bhaal. Luckily Hector has a lot of lockpicks and 4 levels of rogue so this is not a gamechanger for us, but still annoying. :P

I may end up writing a drabble here on Hector waking her up because the actual scene is two lines and not particularly emotionally resonant. XD We'll go back to camp first and see if there's a better scene there, though.

Looting Orin's body, we get a number of fun items. One of them (perplexingly and for no obvious reason) is a studded leather +2 armor set. The second is HER armor set, which is labeled "Mutilated Carapace":

Gross. It's clothing-weight, which means Hector, Minsc, and Karlach could all wear it; they're not going to do that, but it sure is a Look:

We also get a Legendary-level shortsword called "Crimson Mischief," which is a pretty dope name and also has special benefits as an offhand weapon, which means it goes to Jaheira in place of one of her scimitars.

There are a few Bhaalists still hanging around who were, I suppose, just watching the fight; none of them seem particularly broken up about her having died. I guess this isn't surprising.

Wandering down behind the battle arena, we get another brainquake and another visit from the Absolute:

At the very far back we're able to break into Orin's room, which is predictably blood-smeared.

I'm not actually entirely sure how to interpret this one but it's definitely creepy.

Blech. >.< There's still the brain ahead of us, but taking Orin and Gortash out of the picture sure seems like a net positive.

We read a bit about her in one of the books we found near Sarevok - that Helena was her daughter and Orin their incestuous child. It looks as if Orin may have killed her here.

On the other hand, based on this document in the nearby wardrobe, it doesn't seem like she was really any peach either:

Yeah, they can! Now, neither of the twins can force actuall tears stream down their face, but they've learned how to appear like they're about to burst out crying and make a scene - all teary eyed, voice cracking, breathing sharply etc. The boys don't think about anything specific. It's actually quite easy to make yourself tear up w/o the need to think about anything sad (or about children falling, wink wink, get it?), the rest is just regular acting. And Anillis and Hec-Tor are great actors :p

Though I think they're not as good at it as they used to. The twins only pretend to cry when the situation calls for it (like when they need to appear sad over their parents' deaths or when it the memorial day and literally everyone around is crying). But as kids they did it all the time to get anything they wanted, since their caretakers' biggest fear was to see their poor little angels upset u-u

So he would intentionally mess up his dishes so he'd never be asked to cook again :)

For Hec-Tor - anything related to his interests in science. Whenever someone notices and compliments his skills Hec-Tor finds himself in danger of being constantly asked and nagged about accepting a new job offer lmao. He literally can't be good at anything anymore, cause people are going to fight with each other over having one of the Kur brothers as their employee or student Like, he gladly puts his knowledge and skills to good use when he's working on their big project with Anillis, but he'd never put any effort for some regular job. So he likes to play bimbo and pretend like he knows nothing about, say, chemistry or technology, so ppl would just let him be. Hec-Tor is a hedonistic routine hating guy, he belongs at the club...

ooooooooooooooh, boy, this did NOT age well. I've basically given up all hope of ever just even MOVING OUT AND RENTING, let alone buying a house..... since even people who are earning 120k are struggling to afford their mortgages or even rent.

this is besides the point that the reason I'll never be able to own a house is that im finding it IMPOSSIBLE to get ANY job, let alone a job that'll pay off my hecs of 67.5k (after indexation hit on June 1st, making it go up $3000) at a decent rate- say 4% to 4.5% on 75k to 87k.... considering everyone looking at my resume regards me as "entry-level" so I have to "work up" 51k or 55k.... even though im also cursed with even getting rejected from those lower paid roles, too all bc apparalently "the applicant was too nervous in the interview, so we can't hire them" AND having shitty referees (which I think should be removed from ALL job applications moving forward tbh imo).

sorry i'm actually still on that castlevania brainrot, with a big big focus on CoD since i've been re-playing it in my free time, but felt like i was being too annoying about it between simping for Hector in a way i have not publicly done for any other blorbo and bitching about netflixvania lmao

now that i've had some time to let my thoughts Stew and Simmer, and after consuming whatever Hector-centric fan content i can get my greedy little hands on, i got some Thoughts on all the pairings i've come across, and put together my as-of-now takes on them:

• CV: CoD Hector/Isaac - yes! THE ship of all time! versatile, but however you ship them, They Are Each Other's Whole World!!! they're best friends at minimum (at least before Hec's betrayal) and hell yes they're fooling around with each other - they're 2 dudes in their early 20s who grew up together, literally have no one else and probably spend damn near 24/7 together as a result of their living situation/jobs. is it a casual friends with benefits thing? are they romantically involved and devoted to each other? work besties? mentor mentee kinda thing? is it mutually toxic and/or abusive? friendly rivalry? bitter enemies til the end? it all works! the beauty of the canon not being set means theres so much room for interpretation, but i don't think hector or isaac would be as broken up as they are if they didn't feel something for each other. for me, it all tracks and part of the fun is seeing new ways to interpret their dynamic (except no one makes content for their game counterparts anymore after netflixvania 😢)

• Netflixvania!Hector/Isaac - sorry but i just can't get on board the Forgehusbands thing here. in this version, the most chemistry they have is barely tolerating each other as colleagues. its not even animosity, just straight up indifference. then hector spends some months in his own personal hell being Lenores plaything probably just trying to not lose his sanity while isaac is thousands of miles away consumed by the thought of revenge but otherwise living it up. Issac doesnt even really save Hector in the end…? and idk why but the writers were really pushing a Lenector agenda so there really isn't much of anything to ship here. N!Isaac's too dry and serious about his own misanthropy without any of the mindless, fanatical devotion to Drac's cause CoD!Isaac has, while N!Hector is just. barely a character tbh with how passive and contradicting he feels (and i will CURSE the writers for forever squandering his character when he probably has the most official, coherent material dedicated to explaining his whole deal!!!). there's not much in this canon that drives them towards each other in a way i find compelling, but if someone out there could take on the challenge and actually show how they end up getting together (as friends or romantically) i'd be interested in that! because the current status quo where they're Inexplicably An Item From The Start is a little stale tbh

• Hector/Rosaly - YESSSSSS i love how their relationship is depicted in both PtR and the manga series! (favorite panel of all time: "Oh, you bit right away") i've seen some criticisms of this ship and specifically Rosaly essentially being Lisa 2.0 and a namedropped source of Man Pain™ for all of CoD's intro cutscene before never being mentioned again and. yeah, that's all true. BUT its so soft, and quiet and loving. they really are perfect for each other <3 and it's an interesting parallel for Drac/Lisa, and how Hector doesn't go on a genocidal rampage after losing his beloved in the exact same way, despite his own misanthropy still holding strong. does that say something about Hector's character, or was it all just Death's scheming going exactly as planned?

• Hector/Julia - nnnnooo…. come on man. you cant fuck your ex's (that you killed btw) sister that just so happens to look like your recently deceased wife. who was murdered by aforementioned ex. god the baggage going in all directions here... thankfully, even in canon its only implied at best, if you turn your head and squint. i like 'em as Just Friends, thanks - 2 magic wielders that share a bond through being persecuted by humanity, and for losing a mutual someone they cared for deeply. (side note: wish we saw more of Julia! i love that for what little we got of her, she does seem to mirror Isaac, in ways only siblings who are close can)

• N!Hector/Lenore - no and FUCK no. i actively hate this pairing. the only acceptable interaction between these 2 is Hector staking Lenore through the heart with a smile on his face. and before anyone comes for me, it has NOTHING to do with the fact that it's a m/f ship, because as mentioned above, i adore Hector/Rosaly. it's not even because it's abusive, you CAN write and enjoy darker relationship dynamics but. this just wasn't it. if they were going for an enemies-to-lovers kind of thing, they failed spectacularly at establishing the 'to lovers' part. the only reason i enjoyed their S4 interactions is because it's seemingly the only time in the entire series anyone talks to Hector with any level of respect, even if it was just dumb sex jokes.

• Hector/Alucard - this one surprised me, for simultaneously seeming to hold both statuses as 'squarely defined as a rarepair by most fan's standards' but also 'there were at least a good few pages worth of the Hector Castelavnia tag on Ao3 that was just these 2 as the main pairing'?

not really sure how i feel about this one - i like them as individual characters who have a lot of parallels going on (probably because Hector is supposed to be like an 'improved' version of Alucard from what i've read?)

i like the idea of their netflixvania versions trauma bonding after the shit in S3 because good lord they both need someone who can understand what they've been through. but they don't interact at all in the netflix show, so no dice there imo. under a more cynical lens, my feelings are something like "you only ship these 2 because they're both soft prettyboys you wanna see fucking huh"

if you go by the games canon and lore then they're just about the same age and logically would have interacted at least occasionally in their time at Castlevania but ofc we dont see any of it. theres some ancient fanfics out there that expand on this with alucard, hector, and isaac all being childhood friends before they grew up and had to kinda move into their respective roles and protocol and formality and work kinda made them drift apart and i find those very cute <3

i think this pairing could work honestly, they're both generally kind-hearted albeit tragic souls with a cold disposition who experienced the madness of Castlevania and Dracula's vengeance firsthand. there's gotta be something you can pull outta there. mmmaybe not quite friendship either but.... kindred souls. they have that "prince and his knight" kinda vibe, at least aesthetically, which i can get behind! and i like what i've seen from the exceedingly rare pre-netflixvania fics that exist, and even the netflixvania fanfics are kinda cute (please can we move away from the theme of N!Trevor brutalizing N!Hector out of mistrust just as a chance for N!Alucard to swoop in and save him? shit is damn near ubiquitous even in my very brief time exploring)

• Hector/Trevor - (i should specify i'm referring to their games versions exclusively here. N!Trevor isn't even aware of N!Hector's existence afaik) i dig it, there's just the very inconvenient fact that Trevor's supposed to be married to Sypha lol. and i dont really see a trephacard type of situation happening here (not that im crazy for trephacard now that i mention it. it's cute, it's wholesome but eh, not much substance to it? im realizing i like my ships with a pinch of tension)

so much comedic potential! a fun ship to entertain, but i feel like no one seems to make any content that captures their dynamic well. so ultimately this is a "the best ship is friendship" type of relationship for me. i have a headcanon that Trevor tries, really, really tries, to reach out and befriend Hector post-CoD in a way he might not for other people, out of guilt and concern he'd end up like Adrian (except at least Adrian has the option to wake up and rejoin the world, if he felt like he was finally ready someday. Hector, for all his demonic powers, is still very much human and is shown not once, but twice, ready to let himself go peacefully from this world because he just can't envision a future for himself after Castlevania and losing everything that's important to him. and i generally just like Trevor being a Genuinely Good Person, despite being a bit of a pompous hot-head. miss me with whatever netflixvania was going for)

• Hector/Dracula - ….okay so a certain tumblr user's AU got to me and i do enjoy how dark and fucked up this is <33 and thats pretty much exclusively how i view this ship - always a power imbalance, never wholesome. that's all i have to say about it, don't really wanna go into specifics and squick anyone out but uhh yeah. it's not pretty lmao
