Pippa: Hiccup, it's lesbian visibility week, how do you feel?
Hecate: [*chugs an invisibility potion like her life depends on it*]
Pippa: Hiccup-
Hecate: I would like to remain unseen, thank you.

If you really think about it, Hecate Hardbroom from the worst witch is just a non psychopathic, family friendly version of Joan Ferguson from wentworth
-cold, emotionless demeanour
-strict/authoritarian
-tall, black bun, similar physical features
-actually quite caring to the right people but has a hard time/is very awkward at showing it
-emotionally stunted due to a big secret of their past involving the death of a loved one (indigo/jianna)
-can and will beat the shit out of you
-lesbian
-milf
-should have gotten with close female colleague they were 100% in love with (pippa and vera)

So I did a thing... I sat with the idea for at least six months and it's taken me two to write the thing, so I'm happy to be able to put it out into the world now.

My fellow lesbians and lovers of Miss Hardbroom…
I am a uni student looking at a pattern of queer signalling through visually gothic female characters. From my perspective, Miss Hardbroom resonates with many lesbian tropes (gothic lesbian, older historical characterisations of masc lesbians , camp , .)
However, I’m curious whether this interpretation rings true or if it is a reflection of the tendency to read queerness into characters due to a lack of representation in mainstream media. - my main point of research is how lesbians today may interpret queerness when that wasn’t the intention because we are so starved of representation!!
Any thoughts you all could offer on these topics would be greatly appreciated. Please rest assured that this is solely for academic purposes and will not be published.
Thanks so much 🏳️‍🌈♥️

AU is inspired by Renata Litvinova, a director and actress, and Zemfira, a rock singer. I am a fan of their creativity and my brain could not help but generate such an alter reality!
• Pippa is the Supreme Witch (I don't like the version with the Great Sorceress, it's the lot of men to call themselves something great as such without being).
• Hecate is an ethno-rock singer whose creativity is directed at the culture of ancient traditional witches and their rituals. Despite her 20-year career, no one knows anything more than her name.
• There was no Azura and imprisonment in this universe, Gwen was Hecate's mentor, and Pippa pushed her to write songs.
• Pippa goes to all of Hecate's concerts and the witch community shouts about their strong friendship at all. However, the media are confident in their affair, creating the only black spot in the reputation of the politician with rumors.
• Officially, Pippa is married to Joy Hardbroom, the head of the Hardbroom clan, the most influential family on the list of ten. Joy appears only in a couple with his wife and leads a closed lifestyle.
• Pippa has been the Supreme Witch for the last 5 years and conducts programs to support witches from human families and raise the level of magic.
• Gwen and Hecate's team are the only people who know about their marriage.
• Almost every song of Hecate is dedicated to Pippa, which gives rise to these rumors about the novel. Joy is not going to comment on anything.
• Hecate's repertoire and her voice are something in between Zemfira and Sounduk. Listen for the sake of interest to "Прогулка", "Крым", "Жить в твоей голове" (Zemfira) and "Лето", "Герой", "Считалка", "ВММ" (Sounduk)
• Pippa is tired of dealing with the press.
• Therefore, Hecate avoids society.
• Pippa likes to be photographed.
• Hecate can't stand it. But for Pippa's sake he will suffer.
• Hecate has a lot of tattoos, but there is a bright pink pentagram and a bottle with Latin hieroglyphs.
• Pippa collects Hecate's outfits for concerts. On the exits with Pippa, Joy chooses her own clothes. Most often it looks like a widow murdered in the Middle Ages.
• Pippa puts up Hecate's home photos and marks different accounts (separately Hecate and separately Joy) under different photos so that people just know that she is still alive.
• Pippa's accounts are kept by publicists, but the texts of the posts are written by Pippa herself.
• Hecate doesn't know how to run social networks. But she actively monitors the accounts of a few friends and is rude to his haters.

What is Hackle you ask? Hackle is a ship name referring to Miss Ada Cackle (Headmistress and Spells Teacher of Cackle's Academy) and Miss Hecate Hardbroom (Deputy Headmistress and Potions Teacher of Cackle's Academy) from the show Worst Witch (2017). In other words it's dem lesbian witches I keep drawing over and over. They got it all, loyalty, tenderness, THE CLOSENESS!! Just watch the first episode and you'll understand!
Is it worth watching? If you enjoy silly shows, cute dynamics, and all things that are witchy, then yes! But if you're not a fan of occasional bad writing and character development that will undoubtedly be forgotten the very next episode, this show might not be for you. Lol
All that being said have a cute little hackle wip that may or may not be an available sticker in the future!! 🤗💕

Hi I am a student researching the portrayal of female Gothic characters and their defiance of gender norms through the lens of queer theory.
I understand that Raquel Cassidy’s portrayal of Miss Hardbroom resonates with visual and behavioural queer aesthetics. Given that many online discussions interpret Miss Hardbroom as a lesbian, I’m trying to conclude whether this interpretation rings true or wether we read queerness into characters due to a lack of representation in mainstream media.
I would love to hear your insights on this.
Best regards !!
At this stage it's not mere interpretation; we've had confirmation that Hecate Hardbroom is a lesbian by Emma Reeves, the lead writer of S1.

So that complicates the matter and provides you with some interesting avenues of discussion, but it's important to note that this happened after the airing of the final season (and the fandom was far more active prior to season 3's conclusion, but has gained members in recent years).
I also recommend researching the following if you're not already doing so:
Queerness in the Gothic (there are so many papers on this)
Queer monstrosity
Similar characters in gothic literature interpreted as queer, e.g. Mrs Danvers from du Maurier's Rebecca
Existing research into queer fandoms and subtext
You'll find so many branching topics and avenues of research by looking through the citations and bibliographies for these.
Good luck!
