#henry x fanny
Text
someone talk to me the way henry talks about fanny <33
"'...with such unpretending gentleness, so much as if it were a matter of course that she was not to have a moment at her own command, her hair arranged as neatly as it always is, and one little curl falling forward as she wrote, which she now and then shook back, and in the midst of all this, still speaking at intervals to /me/, or listening, and as if she liked to listen, to what I said. Had you seen her so, Mary, you would not have implied the possibility of her power over my heart ever ceasing.'"
i literally ceased to exist
"'I could so wholly and absolutely confide in her,' said he;' and /that/ is what I want.'"

A Playlist for Henry Crawford/Fanny Price
I'm now resigned that my attention to this what-if couple is going to be fixed for the time-being. So, as I do for all the couples I love, I'm making a playlist :)
They're mostly from Henry's perspective, though, so I'm on the lookout for Fanny songs. What I have so far:
Quando Quando Quando - Engelbert Humperdinck
The exuberance! The happy desperation of being in love! Even the low-key presumptuousness! This song screams Henry Crawford.
When will you say yes to me?
Tell me quando, quando, quando
You mean happiness to me
Oh, my love, please tell me when?
Every moment's a day!
Every day seems a lifetime!
Let me show you the way
To a joy beyond compare!
2. Mirrorball - Taylor Swift
A more introspective Henry song about what he loves about Fanny and how his love for her is more than performative (even if he is a performer).
You are not like the regulars
The masquerade revelers
Drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten
Hush, when no one is around, my dear
You'll find me on my tallest tiptoes
Spinning in my highest heels, love
Shining just for you
Bonus: The bridge being a contemplation of how he has always used his charms to compensate for what he lacks, and this is the only time - when he's startled to find something more than the smoke and mirrors he's encountered before - it doesn't work.
And I'm still a believer
But I don't know why
I've never been a natural
All I do is try, try, try
I'm still on that trapeze
I'm still trying everything
To keep you looking at me
3. Make You Feel My Love - Shane Filan Cover
Maybe Henry Crawford in Portsmouth, or Henry in another reality where he actually manages to reflect on his despicable actions and repents uprightly.
The storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet
4. Sweet Nothing - Taylor Swift
My only Fanny entry right now. She never does fall in love with him in Mansfield Park (which is probably why finding songs for her is hard), but I imagine this could've been what it would've been like if she did get a reformed Henry.
'Cause they said the end is coming
Everyone's up to something
I find myself running home to your sweet nothings
Outside, they're push- and shoving
You're in the kitchen, humming
All that you ever wanted from me was...nothing
Industry disruptors and soul deconstructors and smooth-talking hucksters
Out glad-handing each other
And the voices that implore
"You should be doing more!"
To you I can admit
That I'm just too soft for all of it

JAFF recommendation: Unfairly Caught by @bethanydelleman
I really do not like Mansfield Park. But you know what I like? When authors figure out a way to change Mansfield Park so Fanny can be happy without stupidhead Edmund. And that's precisely what Unfairly Caught does.
The love story between Fanny and Henry is delightful. The character growth of both of them felt very believable, and the growth of their relationship was so satisfying. Honestly I felt kind of jealous of Fanny—I want someone to completely adore me and take care of my every need the way that Henry does for Fanny! It was so sweet.
The book does a great job at keeping Austen's style as well. I enjoyed the little references to other Austen works too, like the mention of the Crofts from Persuasion.
The bonus short stories at the end are also a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed the hints in the first one that Edmund sucks at sex, because yes he for sure does! Luckily with Unfairly Caught, that is no longer dear Fanny's problem.
I recommend reading it!

I have a very specific question and I hope you know the answer (or where to look 😅): If I remember correctly when Fanny originally was sent to Mansfield she was first accompanied by a servant and joined by Mrs. Norris on the last part. Was this the normal, proper way for children to travel or would a parent / guardian come and pick them up instead of sending a servant?
Let's say it's the beloved child of Lord and Lady X, they're 8 years old and have a long journey ahead of them to go home. Would loving Lady X travel to her child and bring them back herself or was that seen as overbearing and unnecessary when you have trusted servant Y who will keep the child safe and spare you the hassle?
Thank you so much for your work it's always so insightful!
Thank you!
First a caveat, that was the way that Mrs. Norris proposed that Fanny should travel, but it is not what actually happened:
"...I will engage to get the child to Mansfield; you shall have no trouble about it. My own trouble, you know, I never regard. I will send Nanny to London on purpose, and she may have a bed at her cousin the saddler’s, and the child be appointed to meet her there. They may easily get her from Portsmouth to town by the coach, under the care of any creditable person that may chance to be going. I dare say there is always some reputable tradesman’s wife or other going up.” Except to the attack on Nanny’s cousin, Sir Thomas no longer made any objection, and a more respectable, though less economical rendezvous being accordingly substituted
Mrs. Norris's plan is to send Fanny with a stranger from Portsmouth to London and then with her housekeeper. Sir Thomas clearly did not think this was sufficient. Given what he does for Fanny later, I assume he sent a male servant to fetch her, but we aren't told.
Now as for children traveling, I believe they did often go without their parents. Many children in Austen's and other novels go to boarding school and it doesn't seem like their parents accompany them. However, they would almost certainly send a trusted servant with them. In Wives & Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell, Hyacinth sends her daughter Cynthia, who is a teenager, to France to boarding school completely alone and is criticized for it. She does arrange for Cynthia to stay with family along the way.
If we look at how dependent women travel, which I believe would be similar to children, a male servant is sent most of the time (Elizabeth & Jane's journey to London for example). Fanny is sent with a male relative, William and then Edmund. It is implied that it would be fine for Fanny to travel with Henry Crawford, a gentleman friend of the family. Georgiana Darcy is with her companion Mrs. Younge and at least one (maybe two) male servants. The Dashwood sisters travel with Mrs. Jennings, who would count as a chaperone, she likely has servants with them as well.
The less well-off Miss Steeles travel with a reputable gentleman but not a servant because they can't afford one. Catherine Morland's shocking journey home was shocking because she was unaccompanied (female and only 17). Jane Eyre was sent alone with just the coachman (she was 10) and the school found that odd, so usually a child would be accompanied by someone. Frederica is picked up from school by her uncle in Lady Susan, though that was also because he had to consult with the schoolmistress.
As for real humans, I have read that Jane Austen herself always traveled with one of her brothers, even when she was a confirmed spinster.
So I think it's fairly likely that Lady X could send her beloved child to travel with a trusted servant or three or a relative. I don't think it would be crazy for her to go herself, since Edmund travels all the way to Portsmouth to fetch Fanny, but it would probably depend on the length of the journey and the social commitments of the parents.

Now listen 'ere partner, I'mma need that list or mayhem songs 🤠 also I'd love to know more, I've always loved weird ships that come out of nowhere with little to no possibility of it even being considered ( evident by my Marcus x cup ship, I actually don't know where that one came from) and I always love learning about them and why they happened :33
Wait-wait-wait--WHAT??!! SO YOU'RE TELLING ME THERES SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO SHIPS MARCUS AND CUPHEAD? 😨 Now thats... quite cursed... didnt even know that exists...
But anyway here's the songs with some explanation
Bendy songs:
Instruments of Cyanide (DAGames)
My favorite bendy song, i had different versions of this song as an animatic for inky mystery (i want to animate it but i dont have enough skills to do it yet and its quite long) but there's this one particular version in my head where in WitchBrew was singing chorus 1, Mayhem and Not-Cup had their hands as if spinning the cog with Cuphead and Holly on it.
Tumblr media
This is the art for it.
Behind the curtain (squigglydigg)
(Watch the mv first so u can get what im saying lol)This one is where Cuphead is henry and alice angel was holly-turning-to-mayhem. Mayhem taunts cuphead about the fact that he didnt manage to save holly from the cog
Alice's Tango (You will be mine) by chi chi
Literally just Mayhem dancing tango with Not-cup. He might be newly possessed since i imagined this with him having a bitter expression. (Compared to the art ones where he is smiling af lol) But yea, but him frowning or smiling and dancing with mayhem is still him dancing with mayhem, no matter whoch expression you or i choose lol
All eyes on me (squigglydigg's verison)
I love the og one, Or3o's version, but the og one's for sarah, it had some sweet evil girl tone in it. Whereas Squigglydigg's ver had Alice with a kind of that evil woman voice which is suiting mayhem. Its about her capturing the questers, tying them to a chair and make them watch her sing as they show her that they suppressed her from the cog. Cuphead manages to escape (Oh no no no no babe, hey!;- this is the part of the song where she caught cuphead loose from his ties) and i then she becomes insane as she sing and captures him back while pointing at him, blaming him for uhh everything...? *shrugs* lol
Are you proud of me now? (DAGames)
Ah yes, also one of my favorite songs. This is about holly and cuphead pulling the cog in replacement of audrey and the ink machine in DAGames mv. They bury the pressure that is put on them the the bg figures (Holly: bendy, fanny and cuphead. Cuphead: vicious, fanny, holly and mayhem) and then Mayhem is trying to pull Cuphead into madness when a memory ball revealed that holly is mayhem that is fully influenced by the cog. Cuphead back steps as mayhem is trying to get at him.
Lemme tell ya bud, giving this into detail is quite hard, but i told ya this the best that i can
Now onto the non-bendy songs!
Show yourself (frozen 2)
Hehe, quite weird to see a disney song here eh? XD but basically, this song is about Holly discovering the powers of the cog and some runes in some kind of old hidden Micco Cave. She followed the light where it leads her to Lukahd singing her and transforming her into Mayhem. The questers appeared at the end of the song and Mayhem raind down a cloud of runes she summoned. Cuphead was left flabbergasted at what happened. Alice's angel runes and bendy's demon magic protects them from the attack.
A sad song (we the kings)
This one is based from the Gala heartbreak. Holly goes into full mayhem which makes cuphead heartbroken as she shows bloodlust. But we also get to see Holly's pov which is cuphead laugh off and having fun with fanny and walking away from her as they talk.
And heres the most heartbreaking part; mayhem holds cuphead in a chokehold with her magic as she floats on her broom. Cuphead looks at her with teary eyes, but Mayhem showed no remorse. She was smiling ear to ear as she watched him in pain. Her memory of being holly and messing with the jokester cuphead is vanishing. She chose to ignore those aching memories because of the pain he caused.
Enchanted (taylor swift)
Aint a swiftie but ngl this song is amazing. Perfect for colly heartbreak. Again, this is based from the gala. Also goes along with the storyline of A Sad Song. But this is more on holly's pov tho. This also includes some moments from the gala, when she spied on the cupbros (cuphead hung her on a tree) etc. and then shifts to mayhem attacking cuphead with regrets carved on his glassy eyes.
All of this is kinda hard to get into detail, i tried my best and thats it. Hope u understand my explanations😅
Meanwhile, heres a WitchBrew song but them in a fight:
Devil's Gambit (fnf: indie cross)
Yes, you read that right, an fnf song XD
This one's cool cuz i imagine Notcup having a bit of characteristics from Nightmare Cuphead's form (indie cross).
Tumblr media
Kind of like this.
I imagine him assisting Mayhem of defeating the Questers cuz they were on a hunt for them during the song. Mayhem unleashing her most horrifying abilities and Cuphead shooting blazing hot pink bullets. He still has all of the potion bullets like the chaser, lobber and peashooter etc, its just in pink.
Or possibly theyre fighting sarah, instrument boris and the night terror cuz sarah considered mayhem (and possibly notcup) as anomalies.
Welp, i think ive got it all covered up lol. A LOT was running in my head back then when i was a silent fan.
Holy cuss its 11:30 pm XD i should wash myself now cuz its getting quite late (imstillnotsleepyhelpandimhungry)
Im still wondering how tf did someone got the nerve to ship marcus and cuphead💀

I read some fanfic out of curiosity and now I ship Tom Bertram x Fanny Price. It requires a lot of canon-divergence, starting at least before Edmund falls in love with Fanny, but somehow I find it easier to get behind than Fanny being with Edmund or Henry. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Edmund at all. But I’m a romantic at heart and the book gave me close to zero on that front. Henry Crawford, even without the Mrs. Rushworth incident was just plain icky! He had no understanding of Fanny as a person and did NOT respect her boundaries. Tom, on the other hand, is as close to being a blank slate as possible, especially considering his life-altering serious illness and changing his ways. If Edmund comes to appreciate Fanny’s talents after heartbreak, why can’t Tom after almost dying? And yeah, he’s still a cousin but at least it’s not someone who ignored her as a romantic partner despite being her closest confidant other than a physically absent brother. I guess I can excuse Tom more readily than I can Edmund.

...but at the same time there was a pointedness in his manner of asking her which she did not like, and she saw his eye glancing for a moment at her necklace, with a smile—she thought there was a smile—which made her blush and feel wretched.

top 3 favorite books i read in 2023!
3. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
timid, shy, insecure protagonist who does NOT try to get between her crush and the girl he's going for, has a wonderful relationship with her older brother, and ultimately just wants to be loved and accepted by those around her.
her return to her parents' home is realistically heartbreaking. it isn't that anyone is mean to Fanny - they ignore her.
the entire play fiasco is so juicy and fun to read!!
we get to witness the romantic interest go through his own fall and redemption arc & we as the audience have to sit back and just watch him grow and find himself rather than be alongside him, which is simultaneously frustrating yet a unique experience :)
i honestly thought that henry could have his own redemption arc & was surprised when he instead fell again...this time harder than before...the drama.......
2. Villette by Charlotte Brontë
sad, lonely, traumatized protagonist who is also such a badass. she will not tell us what tragedies she has had to face....so mysterious... i love her
she literally moves to a foreign country where she doesn't speak the language & doesn't have credentials to teach and she just....learns the language and becomes a teacher. she gains respect from the students and staff even if she is still a bit of an outcast
the nun subplot.....so fun and supernatural and the truth of who the nun is was just so damn funny
the graham reveal!!!
the way lucy is treated when she experiences depression, loneliness, and anxiety is so necessary and realistic for her character & all that she's gone through. the way others react to her sucks but is true to the time; it allows us to see how mental health (especially that of women) was treated. no, happiness is not a potato, graham!
the banter & dialogue is so funny and realistic - i love the black cat x delusional vain sunshine dynamic of lucy and ginerva. also the reading shakespeare scene, the 'call me your friend' scene, the whole getting shut up in the attic for hours to practice acting scene, the drug trip, the time she refused to give paul his gift in order to piss him off, and the showdown between lucy and madame beck are such memorable moments that make me laugh out loud or gasp or smile :)
i sobbed at the end. literally sobbed.
1. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
yet another protagonist who is insecure, paranoid, wants so badly to be loved and preferred and noticed, and has a massive inferiority complex.
identity, names, influence, public perception, and reputation are unbelievably important. maxim vs. max, who the "real" or "true" mrs. de winter is, the fact that everything in the house (from meals to portraits to how a desk is arranged) has rebecca's touch all over it, down to the fact that we don't even know the protagonist's first name!
omfg the mystery and suspense and drama and tension is unbelievable. every time she turns a corner, every time she answers the phone, every time she goes outside or visits a family member or talks to a servant or her sister-in-law or even brushes her hair there is so much tension and anxiety and self-consciousness
du maurier's writing is immaculate; i could read her describe paint drying and it would be beautiful
the evening of the costume party is so fucking amazing. the initial rejection and drama is so so good, but i love the rest of the evening even more i think. the way her soul seems to truly die while she keeps a smile on her face and greets her guests, so anxious to be as good of a host as rebecca.....i've never read anything like it. and the morning after...she's so sure that everything is over with maxim & there is no hope and i can feel her despair...
the confession...so incredible. i didn't see it coming and i had no idea what the narrator was going to do, how she'd react. "time and tide wait for no man"...
once the boat is found and there are people suspecting there may be foul play and rebecca's cousin is there and mrs. danvers is suspicious and the narrator faints and they're calling the doctor that rebecca went to - the tension and suspense was so good.
this book got me thinking about perception for days. we are told details that allegedly describe the same story, but many aspects don't line up & we are never given the full, perfect truth. what was rebecca really like? was she really as hedonistic and vain and self-serving as we're told? did maxim ever love her? did she ever love him? did she plan to run away with favell? did strangers think her lovely and wonderful simply because of her beauty or because she actually was a good person? even if she wasn't a good person, did she deserve what happened to her? was maxim justified in getting upset with her and/or putting up with her alleged behavior? who is rebbeca truly?
i'm obsessed.

Mary Crawford tells Edmund that if Henry had married Fanny he wouldn't have had the affair with Maria. He would've only kept flirting with her but otherwise be faithful to Fanny.
As an avid Henry x Fanny shipper what do you think? He claims to love Fanny dearly (and I believe him) but the thought of poor ignored and misstreated Fanny having a husband that will flirt with other women behind her back / in front of her just breaks my heart.
As a preface to my response, I don't take Mary as the absolute authority on Henry. She never expected him to fall in love for real, so she is kind of beyond her knowledge once he decides to propose to Fanny. I also don't think she expected Henry to actually sleep with Maria and certainly not to "get caught".
The one thing we know is that Fanny is unlikely to marry an unreformed Henry. I fudged it a little for my book, but I don't think she would take him if he didn't fix himself. But let's say she does accept him for some reason, then the question becomes, would he hurt Fanny on purpose?
Henry isn't actually a cruel person, he seems to honestly believe flirting doesn't hurt people and also that the women he goes after don't have real feelings. This is not a good worldview, at all, but his personal thoughts about flirting aren't mean. Mary dismisses it as almost a rite of passage or something that could even be good for Fanny! So without reformation, Henry might continue to think the same, but he does believe that Fanny is a unique woman with real feelings. I don't think he would actively continue something that made her miserable. Especially flirting with her own cousins!
Also, Fanny's gratitude to the Bertram makes her partially blind to their faults. For example, we know that Maria was an active participant in the flirtation, but Fanny tends to shove almost all the blame on Henry. If married to Henry, she would probably extend this gratitude blindness to him and be able to overlook a lot of his faults (cough cough right Edmund???).
Lastly, Henry is very resistant to marriage at first, probably because he knows his life will have to change. Maria thinks Henry will propose, which would be impossible if he's married. By proposing, Henry has accepted that he won't be able to have his single person fun anymore.
