Night skies had become a dull shade of gray since the disease broke out that not even the best doctor in Cradle could find a cure for. Kyle had been researching and studying for as long as he could remember, trying to find the source and how to revert it. People were rushed in the infirmary in hopes of being saved but his medicines were not enough, resulting to their deaths to avoid any risks.
His assistant had been very helpful, though medicine is not her field, her alertness and quick-learning abilities aided him in his everyday work. Alice walked in the clinic that night, a steaming bowl of leek soup and earl grey tea on a tray in her hands, "It's already 1 am, Kyle. Maybe we should get some sleep."
"You can go on ahead," He mutters as she places the tray on the space on his table. He was too focused on his reading that he didn't hear what she said until she wraps her arms around his shoulders from behind. "What?"
"At least eat something first, the last time you ate was about 8 hours ago and you're running on 3 hours of sleep since yesterday." Worried eyes gazed on his golden ones and he sighs, finally realizing the exhaustion washing all over him. "You'll be able to find a cure, there had been good results so far and I'm really happy for your progress, but right now, you really need a break."
There was no point in arguing with her, he'd told her that many times as well when she was trying to study the basics of first aid when she first became his assistant. Finally moving from his seat, he starts eating the meal she had prepared for him.
Alice moves away to clean up the mess on the table by the center of the room — it was allotted for creating the medicine. She inspected the pale blue liquid that was starting to boil on top of a Magic Crystal, "I'll be putting this out now, is that okay?"
"Hold on," The chair skids against the floor and Kyle walks towards the table, holding a half an inch long liquorice root in his hand then dipped it into the mixture. "Let it sit for a while."
"What's the liquorice for?" The curious lady asks as she watches the root slowly break down as he stirs it.
"Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, I'm assuming it should help with the rotting skin, at least to somewhat  help improve, if not completely healing it." He explains. "I also added—"
"Doctor Kyle! Please help!" A soldier comes in carrying a heavily wounded comrade, his uniform was torn and his skin had become gray. "We were coming home from a patrol and a walker had attacked us out of nowhere!"
"He's the same patient we had to tend to when he got grazed last week," Alice points out.
"And we used one of our new medicines to see if it could disinfect the disease." Kyle adds and they carry him to the bed. The man was growling softly, trying to fight the pain. "Alice get me the flask." He orders as he dresses the patient's wound. The assistant carefully holds the container and waits for his next orders. The soldier was bitten on his side, the wound was deep and the bite marks were odd compared to what they've seen many times.
The wounded man starts to thrash on the bed, making the other soldier pin down his arms. "We need to let him drink the contents," Kyle's eyes flickered towards Alice who stares back with worried ones. "Keep tending the wound for me."
"But he's restless Kyle — what if you get bitten?" She holds his hand before he could get the flask.
"I'll be careful, don't worry."
"I will not hesitate to kill you if you die." She frowns at him, hiding away the unsettling fear growing in her chest.
The doctor and the assistant switched places. The anti-inflammatory ointment they made before helped with healing the cursed one's scratch marks so Kyle was confident he was close to finding the cure. Alice's eyes moved back and forth between Kyle's hands and the wound in front of her, losing focus in the panic she was feeling.
Kyle gently opened the patient's mouth, then chugging the flask in between his teeth. The patient was forced to drink all of it until it was empty. Hysterical eyes shoot open when Kyle pulls the flask away and frees himself from the soldier's grip.
"Kyle!" Alice moves away from the wound and attempt to pull him to safety, but she was a second too late and the patient had grabbed Kyle by his shoulders and bit at the bare skin on his neck. "NO!"
She wraps her smaller arms around him as to pull him free from the patient's grip, the soldier with them pulling the other. From her view, she could see the blackened eyes staring wildly down at her and she was almost frozen in fear.
The man blinks several times, his eyes returning to its normal state and his hold on her boyfriend loosens, making the couple fall backwards and Kyle coughs in pain, "Doctor Kyle, I'm so sorry!"
"What?" Both of them muttered as the patients had returned to his normal state gradually,
"It worked." Kyle breathlessly whispers in disbelief, "Alice, we found a cure —"
The woman holding him from behind was still shaking from the panic, her relieved sigh came out as a stagger of breath. The hope to save Cradle sparks to life again and they smiled at each other.
"This calls for drinks!" Kyle cheers happily.
"KYLE FOR GOD'S SAKE YOU'RE BLEEDING WE'LL CELEBRATE LATER."
