ah, yes, the wind in your hair while you rest your hands on the bounty railing. you were spacing out until nya broke the silence, "oh, they should be back now.." you look towards nya and master wu's direction, realizing who she's talking about. 

"oh, i fear something terrible has happened to them." master wu said as he turned to you and lloyd "[reader], lloyd," before he finished, lloyd gasped before quickly switching his comic book to a lesson book and you straightened up your back. "you two are in charge of the bounty while nya and i have a look around town." you two look at each other then look at master wu to answer "yup, yeah, okay, sure." is what came out of each other's mouth.

as master wu and nya started to walk away, lloyd pulls out his friz donogan comic book "okay, fritz donogan, i guess its just you, me, [reader], and the imperial sludge" you look towards him and ruffle his hair "you're so adorable, you know that?" you chuckled as lloyd furrowed his eyebrows and pouted in annoyance.

after a few hours, you two were hanging out playing video games, a phone rang and you two looked at each other with a "you do it" expression. after a few seconds of being tired of the sound of the phone ringing, you picked it up and put it on speaker so that the two of you could hear. 

"hellooo-? destiny's bounty, [reader] speaki-"

"[reader]!? it's jay!! can you bring sensei here?"

oh, cool its one of the people that master wu and nya are supposed to find. you and lloyd looked at each other with shock and curiosity. 

"uhm.. sensei and nya are actually trying to find.. you guys. where are you guys anyways? what are you doing?"

lloyd replied while still playing with the console. 

"apparently, you need parental permission to take the bus and we can't seem to get out of the city!"

jay groaned through the phone. 

"uhm.. excuse me?"

you said as you try to register what he just said.

"never mind.. its a bit complicated, just meet us at buddy's pizza in, like, ten minutes. oh, and bring our weapons!"

jay said as he hung up the phone. 

"weapons?" 

you and lloyd said in sync, lloyd falling off his chair at the same time. "but.. we have to look after the bounty?" lloyd look towards you, waiting for your answer "we need to get to them! what if they're in danger!?" you said as you went to get the weapons "you're worrying like a parent again, [reader]" lloyd said, following you from behind.

you two stand in front of the pizza place, looking in disbelief and curiosity, you two went in. 

looking around to find the ninja, you thought that they would be at the counter. on the way there you two heard someone whispering to the two of you. 

"psstt.. [reader], lloyd!" you guys turned around and saw four kids sitting together. 

"beat it, brat. we're on a mission." lloyd said as he tried to turn around and look for the others, until you looked at lloyd while crossing your arms. "lloyd, apologize to that young man right n-" "no! guys, its kai!" 

your guys' jaws were on the floor. you guys look again and see that.. it is them! seeing that, you two gasped and lloyd dropped the weapons on the table. 

"hey.. our weapo-" "woah! what happened!? you're! uh.. uh.. small!!" lloyd shouted, cutting you off and making other people look towards us. "keep it down. we're trying to lay low." kai whispered

"your father's mega weapon not only turned us into kids, but unleashed a creature whose sole purpose is to hunt down ninja." kai continued to talk, "typical garmadon!" cole said. 

"now, everytime we try to tell someone, they won't believe us.. cause we're kids!" jay said as you pick up their weapons. after hearing what jay said, lloyd laughed. "lloyd, why are you laughing? your brothers are in danger, you know?" you scolded and they all stopped to look at you with a surprised look on their face. 

"brothers..?" zane said as he tilted his head, "come on! you guys just act like brothers together!" you said as you hugged them and ruffled all their hair. "hey! let go!" all of the kids, except zane and cole, say as they struggle to get out of your embrace. 

"haha! i thought today i was gonna babysit one kid, guess fate had something up her sleeve!" you exclaimed as you let them go, "argh! let's just get this over with!" jay huffed and crossed his arms. 

"i'm gonna be a big brother.." you muttered under your breath "we can hear you!" they all said in sync, sounding quite annoyed.

I'm crying omg!!!

3 minutes in. Wu Xin immediately beelines for Xiao Se. Alright ship i see u. Lei immediately tries to bodily shield Xiao Se behind him. Which looks like a child trying to protect a parent honestly.

I am suddenly wondering if this took any inspiration from Word of Honor particularly Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu, and Zhang Chengling as their kid. Because Lei is a touch older and these 2 a touch younger, but Xiao Se is taking a very parental almost supervising role over Lei, since he came to check on him and keep his dumbass from continuing to fight and get hurt. Since Xiao Se is the man with secrets acting like he needs Lei for a burdensome money collection - which he does - but also like he may develop a soft spot for Lei over time. Despite being so cold and calculating now. Meanwhile you've got Wu Xin who's giving Wen Kexing vibes in terms of STRANGER DANGER BLARING so instinctively that Lei even felt the need in his pure innocent single minded heart to need to shield and protect Xiao Se in the first place. (And its Liu Xueyi known by me best for his shady roles as Xiao Hua and terrifying horror that is Bai Lin so I love that he's getting to play an intimidating guy here).

Meanwhile Wu Xin wakes up. Looks around then eyes Xiao Se and just LOCKS ON. "Oh hi, I'm wondering if you'd like to come somewhere with me~"

Lmao. Xiao Se shut that down FAST. (And have I mentioned how much I love Xiao Se's character type as the lead of a wuxia? Someone who doesn't do martial arts in the smack center of a wuxia! Someone who counts property damage and has real life shit to do but is trying not to die in a wuxia battle as ppl fight on the carriage he's in and smash it, Someone immediately looked at and approached by God-Power-Level unknown monk guy that he was curious about before cause hey valuable, but is now like nah dude I'm not trying to die ill just leave. I love how he's both the straight man comedically and this very Like Us mundane dude in a very Over The Top superpower heavy wuxia.

Okay so again. I don't know if the novel and donghua this is based on is older than Word of Honor. And I don't know therefore if it could've been inspired at all. Maybe it's coincidence. I do think though perhaps the Instant "is this possibly bl" vibe hits though because of certain similarities. Wu Xin (at least so far) hasn't gone full on gay compliments galore of beauty and I wanna bang you (which made wen kexings crush anvil heavy obvious immediately), but he is visually approaching Xiao Se immediately the same kind of way Wen Kexing did. Singling him out visually, going right for "want to come with me?" And giving me the impression even though Xiao Se said no (like Zhou zishu did) that Wu Xin is still going to travel with him. And Xiao Se has his own kid he's hauling around (Lei) just like Zhou Zishu had Zhang Chengling. Even if the dynamics are bound to be unique as these characters already are, the sort of opening WoH did has some similarities here in character meeting.

Mildly related but it would be kinda fun if the new "trope" was very bl vibes parental units with a third person slightly younger, which makes it "brotherhood" as a big trio but has space to be kinda shippy as the writers desire since the third one is more like their kid then partner. Heroes sort of did this even, from the few eps I watched, with the main boy (and girl) being immediately painted as a bit younger and more naive than Bai Choufei and the guy in red (and girl in white). WoH of course did this, it's the story. Xena way back in the day actually did this a lot - first Joxer as a 3rd to the trio that the girls did not love romantically like they did each other but did love him familially, then the kids and later sort of students they'd pick up temporarily and mentor. Guardian didn't do exactly this obviously but the group investigation unit structure I do think helps have a found family vibe take the main stage and romances become less !!! If downplaying a relationship is desired (I imagine that's also true for The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty? Since it's very found family). Dmbj is not bl lol, but it's main structure of usually a trio and (wu xie you know it's true) wu xie being a bit super close to some guy (interpret as the reader desires depending on the book) works well in part cayse there's usually a trio to emphasize the overall found family/team dynamic, rather than all the focus going to 1 specific pair solely. (Alrhough dmbj is it's own beast... new stuff is purposely trying to put heihua alone pretty front and center, meanwhile xiaoge and pangzi read more as mentors of wu xie but they don't get shipped much instead wu xie shipped with one of them is the norm since he likes older men ). My point is!!! If you DO happen to have a couple in a show (or just a pair with couple potential for fans), there's a way to lean into that partner dynamic in writing without making it the Only Dynamic if say you can't pair those two. And that's by making a trio or bigger found family group, so there's an overall team dynamic going on. I'm just thinking to myself if that's an avenue where we might be seeing more bl like stuff or just fandom getting into stuff. My Roommate is a Detective leaned this route, as did Detective L (Detective L low key shipped the main lead man and woman but the trio element let them keep it from too much focus as they didn't want heavy focus on that, meanwhile mriad oppositely leaned heavy into the bl pair).

On another note. Xiao Se reminds me of Shang Qinghua in svsss a tiny bit, except if he was smarter sjjdjd

I just love Xiao Se okay. He's like a Nirvana in Fire prince got kicked out of politics, retired to run a little in to survive, and the entire jianghu of martial artists suddenly swarmed him like the plague with their super moves and flying fire and he was like... goddamn I'm just trying to get to Xueyue city for some money I inherited... I love deeply he doesn't do martial arts and yet that's the Genre hes in. It's like contemplating in Word of Honor if palace shit plot was going on with a bunch of totally mundane people, then like one just fell smack dab into jianghu martial politics. Like OOPS I shouldn't be here.

Can I bother with a question... I was (re)watching that zhang qiling edit (not today) - 'cause it's so cool, btw- and I wondered if Reboot Xiaoge’s your favourite one...? lol dang it, I was kinda hoping to avoid this question, just because I feel like I'd find it hella hard to explain some things, but I'll try my best and hopefully it'll make some sense xD

I'll start from afar bc I wanna try to explain my reasonings, since I don't want to go without arguments into such highly debated question lolz. I talked about this a bit in my previous asks somewhere, but not broadly as to why that one guy hit all the right spots.

So throughout the books Wu Xie always does this wonderful thing, where he very tangibly describes the feeling he gets when Xiaoge is near, I mean like the aura around him. And he always somehow does it so colorful, that this mix of safety, assurance, calmness, composure and some things I can't quite put into one noun, that he brings to him, I think everyone who've read the books can recognize as this almost magical "Xiaoge feeling". It's not just the way he acts in some dangerous situations or smth like that. It's just everything. You either have it or you don't. And here goes my first argument... to me none of them, except for Huang Junjie and Yuliang have it.

I mean it's not even the obvious stuff, it's like the way they move during the action scenes, the way they even stand and hold themselves, the way they touch Wu Xie, the tone of their voices (both of which are like soothing as fuck), little things you'd think wouldn't matter, but when you watch it and all the puzzle pieces are together, you're like... fuck yeah, thats him.

Also not really that weighty of a point, but to me there's always a joy to see that the actor who plays the character not only gets what's he's playing, but also loves it, bc it's always seen on screen. Usually when some asked about the character they play and what they have in common for example they answer with obvious things like if some character is introverted they're like "well I also don't talk very much" or smth like that, you know what I mean. When I was watching interviews of Yuliang and Huang Junjie I was just smiling so much, bc they've said such things that made me go "yeah, Qiling is safe in their hands".

In Reboot case working in such close proximity with the author definitely also played a huge role here. Bc it kinda gets complicated in some aspects since the books are written from Wu Xie's point of view and you can't only base your picture on his perspective, just bc it's coming from a person who after being basically told "you're my whole world" goes "I'm just a person he randomly passes by in his long life" in his thoughts. Not only he's utterly clueless and dumb when it comes to all this, that he wouldn't notice the way Qiling looks at him and other things, its also not that kind of book, that would go "I suddenly caught poker face looking at me like I'm his whole existence" (and I honestly don't want it to be that book lmao). So you have to take into the account here stuff like what author says to get the whole picture, bc if you look at that from the point of Qiling's view for example, this shit takes a whole wild turn. So I really loved that in UN and Reboot ways of showing Qiling's feelings were well thought out and fit the timeline.

Bc it also works both ways, when it comes to other adaptations. Like Qiling is very and I mean ETREMELY hard to win over. We all know that it was a very long process of gaining his trust and even longer for him to fall for Wu Xie to the point of him being his everything. So what I want in those interpretations is for them to get at which point of their relationships what Xiaoge's behavior makes sense. I do not need any fanservice if it ruins the character, I'll just hate it. The thing that their feelings didn't come out of nowhere is what I LOVE about this ship, bc I'm not the kind of person who believes in "we love for nothing" thing and love at first sight thing (only "got hots for each other" at first sight), bc thats bull. Wu Xie became his everything after a long LONG process of getting to know each other. At the beginning tho he was the same stranger to him as everyone else. So what Reboot Qiling feels for Wu Xie is not what UN's Qiling feels for Wu Xie yet and what UN's Qiling feels for Wu Xie is not what Lost Tomb's Qiling feels for Wu Xie (which at that point was nothing). And I feel like not everyone gets the fact that you can totally wreck the character if you make him behave not the way he behaved in that particular time. Like for example, if someone would make a MDZS adaptation where at the very beginning of their relationships LZ treats WWX the way he treated him after the reincarnation just because "who cares, it's still LZ", that would be dumb af, see what I mean. So Xiaoge having a weakness for Wu Xie in part one is automatically not a Xiaoge to me, bc a huge part of his character and the thing NPSS speaks a lot about is just how IMPOSSIBLE it is for someone to catch his attention and how long it took Wu Xie to get there. So let's just say to me UN and Reboot Qilings for the first time didn't feel like some mashup or character summary/parody, they were Qilings the way they are supposed to be in that part of the story, bc it was the only times someone actually bothered to coordinate it.

Now as to why I prefer one to another. Xiaoge has this thing... the way he holds himself with other people, that is sometimes intentionally and sometimes unintentionally suppressing.

Like everyone knows that if you're a passerby, Qiling genuinely doesn't fucking care and would in fact be pretty harsh about it in terms of treating people like they do not deserve their attention. He won't be like "please, don't bother me", he simply ignored them like an empty space. He is also like that with acquaintances who in his opinion do not deserve his respect like that girl who went hysterical, bc she was upset that he was the only one who wasn't drooling on her like all other men on the crew, Chen Wenjin, Wu Xie's uncles and etc. He's not openly disrespectful unless they trigger him in some way (usually by trying to act superior or later on for not treating Wu Xie right), but if they do, he will in fact remind them their place in sometimes a very rude way, at times humiliating them in front of ppl bc he looks younger than them and talking starts.

He's always doing things on his own terms and hates being told what to do. Like he legit scared Chen Wenjin just with a look and the tone of his voice when he said "let go", when she tried to command him on the mission and grabbed him trying to lecture him about what he should or shouldn't do. That's why Wu Erbai didn't even try anything like this and let him do whatever he needed to do and equally lead the mission in Reboot. And why the scene where Wu Xie 'commands' "Xiaoge, come back" and he immediately listens holds another special place in my heart. Bc he NEVER and I mean NEVER allows such things to ANYONE.

So here I came to a point of why despite loving them both dearly, my favorite Xiaoge is Huang Junjie.

I have this dissonance with Yuliang's version when to me in many scenes it felt like he and Wu Xie are the same age. Like if he was Xiaoge, but in his 20s. In his interactions with Chen Wenjin the dynamics was turned upside down, with him being okay with her telling him what to do and just in general the way she behaved with him. Same as like I didn't always quite believe him to be on par with older generation or even Pangzi, it just felt like he was truly younger than them. Some scenes that I do find extremely cute just don't fit book Xiaoge at all, I'm talking about some moments like his face when Wu Xie gave him food, or him pouting and many things he's done, when you were going "uwu he's a baby". He just never gives me this feeling in the books ever, not just bc he's 100 years old, but sad fact here.. bc he's simply unable to behave that way. Like in the books you'll desperately want to shower him with love, but he's just... I can't quite explain, it's very sad.

I guess it's just you know these characters, who are like hundreds years old, but look like they're 18? I think you have to be very careful with how you write those, so you could deliver that. And in UN because of some changed dynamics and scenes I straight up forgot about it, until Wu Xie threw some joke like "he's an old man" in front of a restaurant.

In Reboot Xiaoge could make Wu Erbai stutter with one move, put Yuliang's version in the same scene, I just don't think it would've worked. Like I'm trying to imagine him telling UN's Wu Erbai what to do and having troubles already haha. Same as I don't think he's capable to be genuinely mad at Wu Xie, and HJJ nailed it esp in one of my fav when Wu Xie was laughing at Pangzi's joke about him catching cold. The look he gave him and how ZYL just retreated was priceless xD. And boy could Qiling get angry with him in the books!

Otherwise I didn't have any drastic fall outs there, like with Joseph's Wu Xie and Ah Ning's death, because that was just too much of a difference, but there were still moments where it was once again this the same scene completely different emotion thing. He was more tolerable to ppl in general here, more pliable. And 50% of the time he gave me the cute lost kitten type, which I just cannot connect with the feeling he gave me in the books. His personality is a cat type 100%, but like seriously "cute baby" is the last word combination I would ever apply to book Xiaoge, but with Yuliang's version it's easily applied. So small bean he is indeed. With Joseph and in UN it works incredibly perfect to me, but the way he is in UN is at times too gentle. And there are lots of scenes where Joseph himself looked at him in a way "you're too cute, let me pinch your cheeks" kind of way, or the way he like sat down next to him on the coast, he was a bit babying him at times. I can't imagine book pingxie doing that. It's just a whole different vibe, the way he takes care of him, the way he lets him take care of him... it's...uuuuuuuuu another vibe (see, I'm so good at explaining lmao).

It's also kinda funny to me, bc HJJ who's the smallest and who irl truly a kitten never once gave me that feeling on screen for some reason. The one babied and loved by every crew and old ppl, who was cutely hiding behind ZYL's back on set, who won't sue an ex who almost ruined his career bc of how stupid she is, bc he "didn't want to hurt her", who according to staff can't even step on a fly, whom CMH was petting for several minutes after he had to hit him with a prop brick bc he didn't wanna do it lmao. I was just like.. ok, this is hilarious, bc I in fact didn't expect him to be a small bean, so watching all the bts made me go LOOOOL. Probably ZYL acting like a 3 year old helped him transform and the age difference problem got lost lmao

As for other adaptations. You know I can't watch seriously "Lost Tomb", I think some ppl probably have some nostalgic feeling about it, but I'm sorry, to me it's fucking hilarious. Like I've already said it looks like some type of twilight parody thing or smth. Soft damselle Wu Xie esp killed me, bc 1st when he ever was that, 2nd in the first book he's salty af, I don't even know this dude in this interpretation, I was like who's this. YangYang I know him from other things, I really don't think it's his role. I know the script and everything is bad. I know the costume and hair are horrendously funny, but it's just I was watching him in those action scenes and was like no... just I'm sorry but I'm not feeling it. I simply just don't know what to say about the whole thing seriously, bc I don't even know where to start. 10 episodes of some salad finished with one mutilated scene from book 6 for no reason the fact that characters are weird themselves also I can't quite tell, did they really just meet or they imply smth else lmao.. I'm sorry, but I do not get it.

I've given LT2 another try after finishing all the books and I've dropped it half way through, Cheng Yi wasn't even close to how I pictured Xiaoge in any aspect. He in fact didn't do anything OOC or off the book or anything, I just was like "not my Qiling". Happens sometimes.

Explore with the note you already know how I feel about this lol let's just forget.

P.S. To be fair here also maybe we should take into account the fact that some got luckier than other with "at which point" Xiaoge they're playing. Like for example, "Wrath of the Sea" and "Qingling Tree" books which is LT2 is not exactly you can say much about Qiling there, he trolls them there in the beginning (in a brilliant way that was totally lost in the adaptation) and he is there in "Wrath of Sea", but it's not the part that can make his character shine in any way, there's not much things happening there that would make you fall for him or get to know him; Yuliang grabbed the fattest piece bc it's middle several books, when they're always together and his character shines the most in terms of clues about past, opening up to Wu Xie and Pangzi, and there are many many events where you can get the picture of what kind of man he is; Huang Junjie grabbed my fav piece of utter devotion, where he's already fully and wholeheartedly belongs to Wu Xie, that I'm just weak for. So like... there's also that I guess xD.

AH OMG!!! Your ask could not have come at a better time, cause I have a feeling this man’s gonna be an important part of my next fic, so I really should start figuring him out. He’s SUCH A LIL WEIRDO??? honestly i love him, even though he’s a total Bitch 97% of the time, but I think at heart he’s just Looking For Something, as are all the characters in this show. 

What really interests me about Huo Daofu are his character parallels with Wu Xie, and I think that’s where most of the conflict between them comes in. Wu Xie, whether he means to be or not, is the Focus of Jiumen a good seventy-five percent of the time. Not always in a positive manner, because in Sha Hai they were all about ready to kick his ass, and in Reboot he pisses them off pretty good with his Warehouse Eleven stunts, but there’s a level of attention on him that other members of the families don’t receive, and I think Huo Daofu notices that, and is like “hey wait a minute why is he getting all the spotlight I want some spotlight >:( He’s not even doing a good job why is everyone paying attention to him”

Cause this bitch. THIS BITCH. He tried to be that bitch. He TRIED SO HARD. He went to EUROPE. He went to EUROPE and got a fucking like??? medical degree???? Like he went to GERMANY??? who does that?? not fucking wu xie, that’s who. Wu Xie went and got like a history degree or some shit which was just par for the course. But HUO DAOFU. He was DIFFERENT. He was gonna be THE SHIT. He was gonna be the unabomber of Jiumen, was gonna blow all that shit up and then say “fuck u” and all the future generations of Jiumen children were gonna hear horror stories about how Unique and Wild Huo Daofu was and he was never gonna have to deal with any of them ever again. 

BUT THEN WU XIE DECIDED TO BE PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE AND HE DIDN’T EVEN DO ANYTHING OFF THE BEATEN PATH. HE LITERALLY JUST FOLLOWED WU SANXING AROUND FOR LIKE. A YEAR. AND EVERYONE LOST THEIR MINDS. Like if I had been Huo Daofu and tried SO HARD to be different from everyone else in my generation and then this Dumb Little History Twink kissed a Zhang and found some wild swamp treasure and everyone went nuts about it, I would have been pissed off too. 

Cause Jiumen is like. Annoying as hell, and everyone has a different way to deal with the fact that they’re a part of a treasure hunting org that has been around for hundreds of years and features immortals and weird-ass dudes with unbelievable martial arts skills and also Wu Sanxing. Xiaoge deals with them by Fucking Off Forever. Zhang Rishan deals with them by being The Most Competent Person In Any Given Room, and Huo Daofu deals with them by being The Biggest Bitch He Can Be, which isn’t even that much of a bitch, because there is always going to be a bigger bitch in Jiumen, and his name is Wu Xie. So it just backfires on him, because NO ONE GIVES A SINGLE FUCK. 

We’re introduced to him at Xiao Hua’s fake funeral (which lmao i love that) when he’s making some Evil Plans with the rest of Jiumen, but not for the same reasons, cause when they actually get to the desert, Huo Daofu does not care about the treasure pits. He doesn’t even go down into Gutongjing (I’m pretty sure), he just hangs out in the camps because he doesn’t CARE about the treasure, he just wants to keep Wu Xie from succeeding, wants to say, see, look, I can do things too, I can be clever and cunning, I can take them all down from the inside out and I don’t even need friends to do it. 

Huo Daofu is jealous of Wu Xie, I think, because Wu Xie is free of the confines of Jiumen, and Wu Xie has friends, and Wu Xie didn’t have to go to another country where he knew no one and didn’t even speak the language and work so hard and be fucking brilliant in ways that no one knows about and doesn’t always, always get overlooked in favor of someone who disregards everyone’s favor, but receives it anyway. 

So when Pangzi shows up with Wu Xie, half-dead, on Huo Daofu’s doorstep, I think a little vindictive part of him goes serves him right. 

But Huo Daofu is not a part of Jiumen in the ways that matter, and he’s a doctor, first and foremost. He took oaths because he wants to help people, he wants to save them, and even if he hates Wu Xie down in the pits of his stomach, he’s not just going to let him die. And so he follows Wu Xie to thunder city because, as he says, “I want to be there when you die.” He’s not going to kill him, he can’t do that, he’s a doctor, but that small, mean part of him wants to watch Wu Xie fall. 

(Also I love @kholran’s headcanon that Huo Daofu is Wu Xie’s bitchy ex, bc like YES??? OF COURSE???? like they had an on-again, off-again thing cause they were like “we’re not doing this with the Jiumen women” but they’re WAY TOO ALIKE and just ended up fighting all the time.)

Reboot loves the Rule of Threes, which is where an idea is repeated three times in order to create a pleasing pattern. Human brains love patterns, and so when we see the Iron Triangle, when we see the three pills that mark the stages of Wu Xie’s illness, when we see the three missing people from Sanshu’s journey, our brains go oh that’s important (and Reboot ALMOST kills the game, ALMOST knocks it out of the park, but then they have FOUR story arcs instead of THREE, and it drives me ABSOLUTELY FUCKING INSANE. WHY DID THEY DO THIS. WHY). 

And Huo Daofu is a FANTASTIC tri-tier replica of Wu Xie’s Greatest Hits, which are: 

Being a sort of outcast/family runaway (Wu Xie has very clearly said Fuck Everyone Who Isn’t Sanshu, and Huo Daofu has aligned himself with the Chen clan, because the Huo’s are like Fuck Men (which honestly good for them but pLEASE love ur special doctor boy he’s getting a Complex))

Acting based almost Solely on Emotions when in the Heat of the Moment (i.e. dropping his entire life to go play doctor with a man who will not calm down for any length of time in order to actual REST)

Solving problems that no person should be able to solve because he’s smart as shit 

Narratively, he’s a FANTASTIC foil for Wu Xie, because not only does he essentially hold this man’s life in his hands, but because he is what Wu Xie could have been if he hadn’t met Pangzi or Xiaoge, if he hadn’t had support from other people. And I don’t think that’s Huo Daofu’s fault, because he and Wu Xie are so, so similar. He just never got the people he needed, and its so clear that he’s achingly alone all of the time, so no wonder he’s jealous of Wu Xie and wants to become part of this little group so damn badly, even as he’s protesting and saying, “no, no, I want you to die, literally nothing would give me more pleasure, please die right now, I’m waiting.” 

Sure, he’s a flipper-flopper ass bitch, but he’s trying his best with what he’s got, and shit, that’s not a lot. He’s got zero support system. I mean why the fuck is he making street churros? Even Zhang Rishan, who has NO culinary expertise or connections whatsover, gets to live in a restaurant, while Huo Daofu has to make fried dough in an alley and then keep people from choking on their own lungs on his damn kitchen table. Someone please help this man.

Sorry if you've answered this before but I'm curious about the lost tomb. Does one need to watch the other seasons to watch the reboot or whatever the new thing is? I saw gifs from it a couple months back and thought the cast was really pretty but didn't watch because I didn't want to have to watch all that other stuff to get to the pretty boys yanno? Would I be losing out on anything by not watching the other content?

So I watched “The Lost Tomb” first, the original season is only 10 episodes long, and then dove immediately into “Reunion”;  but since every single character is re-cast between seasons with extremely few exceptions, you still have to learn everyone over again. I did feel like I was missing some stuff, but not to a degree that impacted my viewing.

Um... I’ll make a little character guide for you. Read that and you should be fine::

Wu Xie (Iron Triangle #1)

Wu Xie is the main POV focus. Wu Xie’s great-grandfather began robbing tombs during China’s great famine as a way to feed his family. He left behind The Gravedigger’s Notebook (title of the book series), which catalogues hidden tombs both explored and rumored. It is considered the family’s greatest treasure.

Wu Xie does not rob tombs to make money. He believes in studying their history and secrets, and sort of goes in as an advanced scout before summoning archaeological teams and donating everything inside to museums and such.

In the original “Lost Tomb” series (2015), Wu Xie is poisoned inside a tomb. To save his life, Xiao Ge feeds him something called “Dragon Medicine”- an ancient, rare form of Chinese medicine that grows more potent with age. The piece Wu Xie eats is 3,000 years old, and it causes permanent changes to his DNA. This appears in the story as both Wu Xie’s blood being used to protect others sometimes and whenever someone mentions Wu Xie having “Dragon’s Blood”.

Kylin // Zhang Qiling // Xiao Ge (Iron Triangle #2)

A 100+++ year old tomb raider. Xiao Ge is the patriarch of the most powerful tomb raiding family- though he doesn’t have anything to do with them. His kind are incredibly long lived and he may even be an immortal- so long as he doesn’t die of injury, starvation, cold, etc.

His blood is a deterrent to most of the creepy crawlies in tombs, it can cure some poisons, and he has two fingers on his right hand that are elongated and possess near super strength thanks to an ancient and lost technique. 

Xiao Ge often wanders off on his own, but he always appears when Wu Xie is in trouble. For an unknown reason, Xiao Ge has had a couple instances in the past where he as badly injured and lost time or memory entirely, so much of his past is a mystery to him as well.

Wang Pangzi // Fatty (Iron Triangle #3)

Wu Xie’s constant companion and, along with Xiao Ge, one of his best friends. Pangzi was a tomb robber once upon a time, but a couple of raids in a row landed him with Wu Xie, who doesn’t allow him to steal.

Pangzi has friends in low places, but Wu Xie has become the person he is most loyal to. Seriously, they act like an old married couple most of the time. Oh, and Pangzi might have magical abilities like Xiao Ge- no matter how long they’ve been in a tomb or how unprepared they were to enter, he somehow always has plenty of peanuts or sunflower seeds in his pockets. It’s a running joke.

** Wu Xie’s uncle Sanxing had a companion and right hand man named Panzi who is mentioned a couple times. It gets confusing, just a heads up.

Wu Sanxing // Third Uncle

Wu Xie’s father is the first brother, Wu Sanxing is the third (the second is listed next). Wu Xie idolized his uncle Sanxing his entire life, but Wu Sanxing vanished after a tomb exploration, never to be seen or heard from again. 

Wu Xie’s guiding mission is to find his uncle Sanxing at all costs- but to do that he must use his grandfather’s notebook to follow in his uncle’s footsteps and try to piece together a decades-old mystery.

Wu Erbai // Second Uncle

Wu Xie’s... second uncle, lmao!

With Wu Sanxing missing, Wu Erbai is the only family Wu Xie has around (in some “Lost Tomb” adaptations Wu Xie says his parents are dead, but in this one it is implied they are alive but estranged from Wu Xie). Wu Erbai is a bit of a mob boss, though he is kind to his family. He tends to finance Wu Xie’s explorations and takes a keen interest in his nephew’s safety and wellbeing.

A-Ning

A-Ning was one of the first tomb robbers Wu Xie ever encountered on his travels. Over “The Lost Tomb” series, Wu Xie and A-Ning go from enemies to friends- and there are little hints that they may have been heading towards intimate relations.

In “Reunion”, A-Ning is revealed to have died on Wu Xie’s watch as they searched for a tomb (IDK if this is part of another of the Lost Tomb shows, I’m going back now to watch my way through the whole series). Her memory is very present in the story, so it was worth mentioning her.

Black Glasses // Hei Yanjing

(Not Giffed, but... you know... look for a dude all in black wearing sunglasses religiously)

One of the people Wu Erbai has on his payroll. Black Glasses is another semi-immortal. He is only a little bit younger than Xiao Ge, and very nearly his equal in terms of power. 

Yanjing’s main abilities lie in his eyes though. Out in the world- day or night- he is blind without his simple black sunglasses. In a pitch-black tomb though, he can see perfectly due to his insanely good night vision.

Xiao Ge fights mainly with his sword, but Yanjing is more fond of modern weapons such as guns. He’ll use anything to his advantage- and he’s quite mouthy. I think he and Xiao Ge are... cousins? Or something?

That’s pretty much it for “Reunion”. There are a few other characters who are returns from earlier seasons, but their purposes are pretty easy to guess and their roles minor enough that you’ll pick up on their characters pretty quickly. This includes Liu Sang- the one whose GIFsets I keep sharing :)

The show contains itself in its own story very well, so I think you’ll be able to make it through. But if you feel lost, all I watched before going into it was “The Lost Tomb” from 2015 (10 episodes), mainly to learn who the characters are. You can also look up the characters in the DMBJ Wiki (DMBJ = shorthand for the name of the novel).

grew up in california, and his parents own a hella successful solar panel company that he’d most probably be in charge of in the future but his parents aren’t pressuring him to get involved yet so he’s just chillin for now

certified new york times best seller! his thriller novel “the five omens” was published when he was twenty four, and its sequel “the crow’s call” was released three years later. he’s got a third novel rumoured to be on the way, and fans are apparently excited for it

he’s just a wanderer my dudes. he travels a lot, going to all sorts of countries to gain inspiration for his novels, so he doesn’t stay in a place for too long. oh, and his instagram feed looks SO GOOD because of that no wonder he’s got nearly 3 million followers (and no, it’s not because he posts shirtless pics and dumb selfies sometimes,,, okay maybe it is but whatever) and has been the face of a few brands

because his main occupation is being a writer and he doesn’t stay at one place for too long, he doesn’t really have a job (seriously feel free to tease him for being jobless he will laugh along with you because it’s true) so! he tends to take on small or odd jobs for the experience that he can incorporate into his writing, or just because he’s bored. boy’s worked as a barista, a salesperson, an office intern, a dog walker, a bodyguard... just small things, you know? 

really laid back, just one of the most chill people that you’ve ever met. you wouldn’t take him for a rich person because he sometimes dresses like a tired college student or you might have met him while he’s doing a part time job or maybe you saw him napping on the beach and you’re wondering if he’s a homeless person or,,,, but then you see the rolex on his wrist or he’ll mention that he’s staying at an expensive location and you’re like “whoa hold up”. he’s pretty charismatic and a tad mischievous so he’s easy to get along with, but maybe he can be a bit scary when he’s mad? *eyes emoji* but it takes A LOT to get him properly angry, so he’ll just stay his calm and warm self most of the time.

a tour guide, first of all! someone who’s willing to show him all the tourist attractions but also the spots that only the locals know of and appreciate. all the best food places? pls show them to him and feel free to join him for a meal, too! also he takes amazing pictures with his professional camera so hey, the view’s pretty and you’re even prettier, when’s the last time you’ve uploaded a gramworthy pic? this shot might be your next one. 

a potential employer? or colleague? people that he can work with because how is this man supposed to pass the time here when he’s got nothing to do? that would get boring real fast. the job wouldn’t be something that’s particularly hard or something that requires him to take up the position for a long time, so something that he can quit easily! bonus points if it’s a job that he hasn’t take up before. he’s up for anything. 

a muse!!! someone who captures his curiosity so much that he just. has to write it down on paper. next thing you know, he’s already making a character based on you. is it weird if this character gets killed in the fifteenth chapter? yes? okay then how about the character being the new killer? okay maybe you can be a side character- 

a temporary lover? kinda like a summer fling but it’s not really summer. is it spring yet? ya girl has no concept of time i’m sorry lmao but yes. mostly physical with someone who’s not likely to get attached because he’s only here for a short time after all, but it’s fun going out on dates and stuff and hey, on the off chance that you ARE the one, then wouldn’t that be a good thing? he’s not looking for love, but if it comes to him, then he’s not complaining.

a familiar face? dude’s been to many places, traveling all over the world since he graduated college so what if he runs into someone that he’s met before in another country? did they get along well before? were they friends? were they lovers? did they annoy the hell out of each other? maybe he doesn’t even remember them but they remember him. they might be aware that he never stays in one country for longer than a few months, so will they try to have a more meaningful relationship while he’s here or just avoid him altogether?

at first wu wants them to fight longer and shit but hes OLD so who cares and theres probably conflict on thatbut kai and cole are old enough to realized they dont have to be controlled

so they get married, symbolically if anything, because they've been dating for probably a little over a decade now and known each other even longer, AND been living together for the same amount of time

theyre the first of the ninja to settle down, and they buy a small house in a village thats maybe an hour away from ninjago city

the tininess of the house is made up for by the largeness of the yard, where cole likes to garden, especially fruits and vegetables

cole works as a stay at home free lance artist, doing stuff like commissions, book covers, comics, etc for moneykai does something that puts his charisma to use, probably something in business that lets him advertise and talk a lot..he could never settle down for a stay at home job or anything, even with all his thrilling ninja stories

they have enough money from donations and awards to thrive off these jobs, and ninjago probably pays them kind of like retirement

cole cooks for kai so he always has a meal ready when hes home, so then kai cooks on the weekend

anyways, they have two kids, about 3 years aparti haven't figured them much out yet, but kai and cole cook and bake with themcoles parenting style is very protective and rather spoils them, while kai lets them do whatever as long as its not immediately dangerousthey balance each other out well, so their kids grow up loved and well rounded

moving on to the other ninja who also start to settle down,jay doesnt really want kids, so he passes on his powers with ~science~ or something, but only when hes a lot olderhe does engineering at borg industries or something, and he messes around a lot but gets away with it bc hes the blue ninjahes like kai and coles kids Fun Uncle, since he lives in a big apartment in downtown ninjago city, with a bunch of cool techkai and coles family often take elongated road trips therejay thinks hes a cool relative but besides being super lenient hea actually kind of embarrassing lol

nya settles down a bit later than the rest of them, because she wants to live her ninja days to the fullesti could go on about my domestic samurai au but her and pixal have a kid who gets nyas water powersnya is much more eager to train her kid than cole and Kai are (they want to start properly training thwir children when theyre like 16, much to wus disappointment)nya doesn't force anyrhing on her kid but she doesnt protect her kid from the fact they'll have to train sooner or latershes determined on still changing the world, so she's a strong political leader, with innovative ideas who doesnt approve of ninjagos government and wants to change it for the betterShe also lives in downtown, but isn't as fun as jayher kid is younger than kai and coles, but kai and coles kids look up to them because they're very independent and skilled! their mom is also super cool, but not in a silly way. she rocks leather jackets and drives her kid around on a motorcycle

lovelypeaches08/28/2019zane is tricky for me...i like to imagine him sticking with lloyd to being a ninja or whatever, since hes going to be alive a lonnggg timehe also wants to respect wus wishes, so he teaches students and fights alongside lloydhe does so much less however, and finds a lot of time to visit his friends

kai and coles kids are shy around him at first, him being a nindroid whose still a ninja, but hes so much nicer and softer than expectedhe always brings them presenrs and enjoys quality time with them, so he's basically their favorite uncle

now lloyd continues his master training, to become the next master after wu dies. hed be the one to guide the next generation of elemental masters as well as their parents in training thembut don't worry, he gets a break too, since the other ninja help him out. hes much less burdened then wu was in the later years of his lifeok thats all i think

little boy whos like 3 and super wide eyed and excited and loves pink (when he foudn out zane at one point had a pink gi he asked if he could get one too)older girl around 6 whos a big daddys girl and loves to garden with cole and make mud piez

the little girl is the fire em - she had temper issues linked to autismz which they worked through her with early and never thought of it but she has a big passion for gardening they mistook for elemental connection when rly she just LUVS IT

little boy is em of earth - hes a natural born leader and stubborn, wide eyed and excitable. again bc they worked w both their kids about their tempers and such they never realized he was just naturally good at keeping his composure. also a lot like jay keeping morals upnaturally strong but both their kids are and i hc the super strength doesnt come in until peubertyz

shes a bit of a late bloomer with em powers but one day their little boy accidentally makes a pot hole inside the kitchen bc he was excited over zane cookingthey took too good of care of their kids and his true potential was simple bc he was a litol kid which was im going to live my best fcuking life with friends and family *rips a hole in the ground

nya is hesitant but ends up being a really good aunt, i meanshe took care of kai /j

you quickly wake up, not wanting master wu to go inside your room and barge down your door.. again. you got ready, went in the kitchen to grab your mug and get your desired beverage, and you made your way to the ninja's room as you stretched. you knock on their door and you open it. 

"morning guys. you know what to do." you sip from your mug as you look at them tiredly until you notice something. they were even.. lazier than any other day. they basically look like jellyfish? of course, except for zane. he was normal but he also noticed what you were thinking about.

you look at them with an eyebrow raised, "alright guys, what is going on? you guys feel alright? i can just tell master wu for you to not train today." jay clinged on the fabric of your outfit and shook you lightly "MY WHOLE BODY IS ON FIRE" jay screamed, receiving a few nods in agreement. 

"jay, let go of me! i'll get sick too!" you said as you took a few steps back and bump into someone behind you, it was nya. "it looks like the ninja has gotten sick." nya said as everyone looked at her weirdly, "wha- what do you mean by that, nya? we were healthy and strong yesterday!" lloyd asked, his voice sore. 

"doesn't mean you can't get sick, kid!" nya smiles. "also, master wu had to go somewhere for a few days. maybe just.. two and a half days." nya announced. "that means we have to take care of these goofballs on our own?" you asked her, knowing full well the answer is yes. and of course, she nodded as everyone groaned. 

after a few hours, it was dinner. you and zane had to prepare it, you thought of making something warm and.. and "soupy". he agreed and you two decided to make miso soup. zane called everyone to eat as you finished preparing the table. everyone enjoyed it! 

when zane and nya tell them to go to sleep, you were in your room. and you tried to sleep until a knock on your door could be heard.

"come in." you said as you sat up from your bed. the door creaks open and it showed zane and nya, they brought sleeping bags. "oh, hey guys. what's up?" you asked them with a smile on your face.

"can we sleep with you? i'm sooo tireddd.." nya sighed loudly, being very exhausted after taking care of the ninja today. "this day has been really tiring for us all. why don't we spend time with each other without the ninja?" zane explained as he laid down his sleeping bag. they both get ready and say their goodnights and sleep tights. you saw them sleeping soundlessly, you sigh as you close your eyes. drifting to your sleep.

we had a personal falling out and he likes to paint me in the worst light possible and twists actual events and removes their context to try and grab for attention every now and then which eh whatever i was just surprised ((or rather... not surprised...)) to see him doing it a year and like four months on... like maybe when it first happened its fair game, we were upset and angry, but now its just sad to see after all this time

the guy aint outright evil, but me and another person he refers to as ‘her’ have both been demonized in his posts for a long time and he needs to learn to let shit go, you feel? after he started demonizing me, the one he refers to as ‘her’ reached out to me and explained what went on between those two and turns out he screwed us both over in pretty similar ways

im not gonna say i was entirely innocent during the whole thing, i lashed out too and was very sore about the whole thing but honestly i responded pretty normally and i honestly doubt im as ‘abusive’ or (dare i even use this word without laughing) ‘toxic’

after all, even after we fell out i noticed he was feeling bad without the binder i lent out to him so i met back up with him to give it back ((bearing in mind... it was my own personal binder)) and he brought a group of his friends along with him without saying he would do so and then didnt even look at me when i handed it to him which felt gr9 even though that was something i absolutely didnt have to do
