Thanktival 2022 - Day 7 - Horrible Histories
Title: The Office Party [AO3]
Characters: Milton "D.I." Bones / Mike Peabody
Prompt: HHTV News Team
Summary: While decorating their Christmas tree, Mike and Milton take a trip down memory lane to the very beginning.
————
The Office Party
“Remember our first Christmas together?”
Milton snorted. “You mean that office party two weeks into my new job where I made a fool of myself by wearing an ugly Christmas jumper while everyone was dressed formally? Yeah, I’d rather eat glass than remember that.”
Mike laughed as he passed him the Christmas lights. “I’ll have you know that I thought you looked very fetching with that cute little reindeer on your chest.”
“Not funny,” Milton grumbled, pointedly not looking at him.
“It’s a bit,” Mike said, unable to keep the fond smile off his face. “You did, though, you know? Look fetching that night.”
Milton heaved a heavy sigh and let his head hang. “I looked like a bumbling fool is what I did. I thought the bosses would fire me right then and there.”
There was a beat of silence as Mike took in the tension in his shoulders and the way Milton gnawed at his lip. He looked so utterly miserable that Mike gently reached up to cup his face. “But they didn’t.”
“I didn’t know that then,” Milton reminded him. He closed his eyes for a brief moment. “I just wanted to make a good impression, you know? To show everyone that it wasn’t a mistake to hire me.”
Mike allowed his thumb to stroke over Milton’s cheekbone. “I hoped you hadn’t heard the office talk back then.”
“Oh, I did,” Milton glowered. “I was very much aware of the fact they’d only hired me because their favourites pulled out last minute and they desperately needed someone to do the job. I also knew people were betting on when I’d leave, and that they were laughing behind my back every time I screwed up.”
“I’m sorry,” Mike said softly even though he knew it didn’t change anything. “For what it’s worth, I never participated in any of that. And neither did Sam or Bob.”
Milton heaved a heavy sigh and finally leaned into his touch. “I know. You were the only ones who actually talked to me, both at the office and at that blasted party. I thought it was pity at first.”
“Oh Mil,” Mike whispered. He let his hand fall from Milton’s face so he could interlace their fingers and gently pull him down from the ladder. Looking up into those eyes that he loved more dearly than any other, he pressed a lingering kiss to Milton’s lips. “It wasn’t pity at all. And I meant what I said: when I saw you in that Christmas jumper you took my breath away. I know you didn’t have the best time that evening but I? I fell a little bit in love with you that night.”
To his surprise, Milton huffed out a laugh. “I looked like a walking Christmas tree at a funeral, Mike.”
“You also looked like you wished the ground would open up and swallow you but that didn’t stop you from holding your head up high the whole time,” Mike said, giving his hand a squeeze. “I admired that about you. Still do.”
Shyly, Milton ducked his head. “I didn’t know that.”
“Then it was about time I told you,” Mike whispered before he leaned in for another kiss.
There was a beat of silence after he pulled back before Milton’s lips twitched up into a fond smile. “Sam teased you mercilessly, didn’t she?”
The noise Mike made was somewhere between a laugh and a groan. “You have no idea. She knew immediately that I was crushing on you and wouldn’t stop gossiping with Bob about it every time you went to get us more drinks. It was a nightmare. Bob actually started taking notes on our interactions that night. For the Bones-Peabody wedding report – his words, not mine. And I’m not kidding, Mil. I’ve actually seen them. They exist.”
He basked in the sound of Milton’s unabashed laughter. “So that’s why he was so eager to do a speech!”
“I can already hear him, Mil.” Mike cleared his voice, trying to imitate Bob. “And then they sat there at the party, awkwardly looking at each other – but not for long!”
Milton leaned his head down so his forehead was touching Mike’s shoulder, shaking with laughter. “We’re going to get the most accurate wedding speech of all time.”
“And probably the most embarrassing one too,” Mike said with a grin. He wrapped his arms around Milton to hold him close. “We’ve come such a long way from that moment, haven’t we?”
He felt Milton hum against his shoulder in agreement. “Five years … I can’t wait to see what the next five will bring.”
Mike closed his eyes, imagined their wedding, their honeymoon, maybe even adoption down the line, and smiled.
“Probably more grey hairs for me,” he joked.
Milton snorted.
“As if you care.” He pulled back to look up into Mike’s eyes. Smiling softly and a little dreamily, he brought up one hand to card his fingers through Mike’s hair as Mike knew he was fond of doing. “And neither do I.”
They stood like this a little while longer, lost in each other and the moment, before Milton finally found the strength to pull away. It took them another hour until the Christmas tree was sparkling in all the colours of the rainbow and the rest of the house was decorated as well, mistletoe very self-indulgently included. They shared a quick kiss under it before they let themselves fall onto the sofa. Exhausted but happy they glanced at each other.
“Elf?” Mike suggested at the same time as Milton said, “Night at the Museum?”
“That’s not a Christmas movie!” Mike protested with a laugh.
“You’re wrong and you know it,” Milton told him. Then his face softened. “But yeah, we can watch Elf.”
Mike grinned and put on the movie while Milton went to the kitchen to get them some of the cookies they’d made earlier.
They were halfway through the film when Mike turned to him, pointed at Buddy’s outfit on the screen and whispered with a grin, “Imagine you’d have worn that to the Christmas party.”
Wordlessly, Milton reached for the pillow behind him and hit him squarely in the face with it.

lately i've been wondering: what is the lore of horrible histories?
obviously it's not really meant to have lore; it's a education comedy sketch show. but we often have sketches where people from the present travel to the past and vice-versa. so, here's my theory:
in the horrible histories 'universe' time travel exists. a while after it was discovered, several news stations were allowed to use it to gain information about historical events first-hand. this explains how hhtv news works.
then, time travel became available to more people, particularly those working in television, which is how we get sketches like history's greatest escapes and, arguably, some of the adverts. some people living in the past even adopted these ideas and used modern technology to make their own tv shows and adverts, such as the vikings' 'we sell any monk' ad. along the way, many launched music careers, as well.
however, the biggest change was that some people decided to use time travel to travel to the present. this is how we get many different sketches, like historical masterchef, historical dates and many more. everyone seems to have grown used to the large number of historical figures visiting and perhaps remaining in the present, as no one reacts strangely to the deceased monarchs and cavepeople wondering around.
there are some exceptions to this however. for example, whenever we see the historical paramedics, they are from a different time period. this suggests that they are in fact not from the past, but are in fact both obsessed with history, and since time travel has become accessible to everyone, enjoy visiting a time period, purchasing some outfits, learning about medical treatments from the time and then cosplaying as paramedics from that time. either that or they're immortals who've lived through many different eras and are keeping up with the changing treatments.
the only character who i imagine does not fit into this frame is death, as we can assume he does not live on this world but on the crossover between life and the afterlife. however, it is interesting how stupid deaths mimics real life, beginning as comparable to airport security, and then become a talent show like the x factor. this implies that death either realised that a talent show would be a more fun way of letting people into the afterlife than a check-in point, or - my preferred headcanon - he has some rags-to-riches story in which he goes from a humble employee to being famous enough to have his own star-studded talent show.
this has just been a lot of rambling haha, but i just think this is all fun to consider!
