Magnus has mentioned several times that he’s lost all his money on more than one occasion (in TBC #2 for instance. I can’t for my life remember what the story’s called, but it’s the one where he’s rescuing Marie Antoinette)

I think he’s just used to hiding away all his money just in case hard times come upon him and he needs to run. Also, he wasn’t always rich - he grew up an orphan in the 1600s. Which is probably how he developed a habit of stealing stuff.

kinda funny to me that magnus keeps saying that he's really expensive but he also canonically steals things all the time using magic, even things as small as coffee, though he could easily pay for it using magic as well. what would he even need those expensive rates for if he's going to avoid paying for literally anything. i'm maybe starting to think it's not a coincidence no one in the books has ever had to pay him for his services. i'm starting to think he's kind of just saying that

Invented the portal and implied many other things!!! That we were robbed of knowing.

Can make potions.

Can fight without magic.

Can fight WITH magic.

Genuinely known for his ability with mind magic (something incredibly tricky this means he’s on par with a neuroscientist or surgeon).

Is fashion in a way that fashion wishes it could be.

Is powerful enough and skilled enough to take care of one of the most powerful Insitutes wards.

Is capable of redirecting and channeling the angelic core and leylines.

Can also heal.

NOT ONLY MAKES HIS OWN POTIONS AND BODY PRODUCTS.

Is powerful enough that his very very prideful father wants him in his side.

Still manages to have empathy and care for his own people and people who should be enemies.

Is Magnus Bane.

Owns a popular club while fulltiming as the High Warlock of Brooklyn.

Step 1: Casually ask him if he wants to grab a cup of coffee.

Step 2: Find a way to make Izzy stop laughing because you accidentally proposed instead of asking Magnus out for coffee.

Step 3: Try to not propose again after Magnus suggested going on a date first.

Step 4: Fail to follow step 3.

Step 5: Overhaul the Clave and their laws that discourage same sex relationships and relationships with downworlders in general, because Magnus said yes!

Step 6: Marry Magnus.

He reached over and ran his fingertips in a light, absentminded caress along Alec’s neck. Alec leaned into his touch. When Magnus’s hand dropped, Alec wanted to follow it.

“Don’t worry about her,” Magnus added. “Many warlocks have tragic childhoods. We come into a world already made dark by demons. It’s hard not to give in to the anger.”

“You don’t,” said Alec.

Magnus’s voice was bleak. “I have.”

“Shinyun didn’t have to join a cult,” said Alec.

“I didn’t have to found a cult,” Magnus pointed out.

Alec said, “That’s different.”

“Sure. It’s much worse.” Magnus tossed a twig into the fire and watched as it withered and blackened, and then curled into ash. Alec watched him.

Magnus Bane was always brightly burning, whimsical and effervescent, ethereal and carefree. He was the High Warlock of Brooklyn, who wore blazing colors and shiny glitter around his eyes. He was the sort of person who threw birthday parties for his cat and loved whomever he wanted loudly and proudly.

Only there was dark waiting behind the brightness. Alec had to learn that side of Magnus too, or he would never really know him.
