This vision of outdoor bliss isn’t just about furniture arrangement; it’s about plumbing synergy.
Yes, you read that right — plumbing and outdoor furniture can collaborate to create stunning outdoor spaces that blend function with aesthetics seamlessly.
Unblocking the Potential:
Understanding Drain Issues in Outdoor Spaces
Confronting the Challenge of Blocked Drains Outdoor drains are prone to clogging due to various factors like fallen leaves, debris, or even tree roots infiltrating the pipes.
When neglected, blocked drains not only impede water flow but can also lead to unsightly puddles and even property damage.
The Solution:
Effective Drain Cleaning Fortunately, tackling blockages in outdoor drains is feasible with professional drain cleaning services.
Utilizing specialized equipment, experts can efficiently remove obstructions, restoring proper drainage and preventing potential water damage to outdoor areas.
Rooting Out Trouble:
Managing Sewer Blockages and Repairs
The Root of the Problem:
Tree Roots and Sewer Blockage One of the most common culprits behind sewer blockages is the infiltration of tree roots into underground pipes.
As trees seek moisture, their roots can penetrate sewer lines, causing obstructions and even structural damage over time.
Sewer Repair:
Restoring Functionality to Outdoor Spaces Addressing sewer blockages promptly is crucial to prevent sewage backup and maintain the integrity of outdoor areas.
Professional sewer repair services can identify and resolve issues, ensuring seamless functionality and preserving the aesthetic appeal of outdoor spaces.
Design Harmony:
Integrating Plumbing Elements with Outdoor Furniture
Aesthetic Integration:
Concealing Plumbing Fixtures Incorporating plumbing elements like outdoor faucets or drainage systems into the design of outdoor furniture can enhance visual appeal while maintaining functionality.
Concealing fixtures within stylish structures or integrating them seamlessly into outdoor features ensures a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing outdoor environment.
Functional Fusion:
Leveraging Plumbing for Outdoor Comfort Beyond aesthetics, plumbing integration can elevate outdoor comfort and convenience.
Imagine an outdoor kitchen with a built-in sink for easy cleanup or a luxurious outdoor shower surrounded by lush greenery — these features not only enhance the functionality of outdoor spaces but also elevate the overall experience for homeowners and guests alike.
Conclusion:
In the realm of outdoor design, the synergy between plumbing and outdoor furniture offers boundless possibilities for creating captivating and functional spaces.
By addressing common plumbing challenges and integrating fixtures thoughtfully, homeowners can transform their outdoor areas into havens of relaxation and enjoyment.

Hello,
I wanted to ask how to close to reality is the story’s setting?
Did Galder replace science in this world, or are they connected?
Will we deal with medieval beliefs about medicine and superstition?
Witch trials? Plagues? Lack of plumbing?
Thank you
Wanted to add that I really liked your story :)
I tend to get board with wordy writing but I felt none of that with your’s
Can’t wait for the first chapter <3
I'm not exactly how close to say the story is to reality, my goal is to write a fun fantasy story that fundamentally doesn't feel goofy as I feel a lot of fantasy stories end up being.
That doesn't mean everything is based in reality but if I can, I try to have some basis for my writing decisions.
In this world, Galder (a type of magic) and science are closely connected because they are both studied by the same kind of people—philosophers. These philosophers study literature, morality, science, and Galder, and those who focus specifically on Galderic principles and practices are sometimes called Wizards and Witches.
In Chapter 1, you'll meet an actual Wizard Philosopher, which is exciting because they are one of the most fantastical elements in the world.
Science in this world can and does advance, and in some ways, it is more developed than it was historically in our reality. This is because Galder allows for engineering feats that would have taken much longer to achieve without it but in other ways it's stalled because galder has removed a pressure to innovate in certain ways.
My favorite example of science and galder being used together in this world is the Grand Lift at Maidenhead, you'll see it in chapter 1 also, it straddles the line between being an engineering marvel and feeling like a genuine miracle for the time.
While the world retains many medieval beliefs about medicine, Galder is an effective means of physical healing. Superstitions are more common around mental health, and the poor, who cannot afford Galderic healing, often turn to hedge-witches and apothecaries, though their methods are much less effective.
Witch trials aren't really a thing here because 'Wizards' and 'Witches' are just titles for practitioners of Galder as mundane in that world as you might call a soldier with a title a 'Knight'. However, hedge-witchery is persecuted and criminalized because it's seen as unnatural and morally wrong according to Galderic principles because it operates outside of them.
Plagues still occur, such as the recent Great Water Sickness mentioned in the Prologue. The world has medieval-level plumbing, though some regions are more advanced than others. For example, in wealthier regions like the Princelands, Vale and Great Lakes, Borderlands, Highlands and more recently the Royal Domain, aqueducts and sewer systems are being developed, although at varying rates across the Empire.

I need to put my thoughts in order.
I had a very long, and ultimately very good, but nonetheless frustrating conversation with a friend about history. They knew quite a bit more about the last 400 years in Europe than I do and they wanted to tell me about what they knew.
Which was fun. But the theme of the conversation ultimately bent around hopelessness and the nature of humanity.
They wanted to talk about terrible things that people had done. Royal families. Fascism. Individual people who were responsible for terrifying inhuman depravity. And.
And they knew ~so much~ about the human capacity for violence and terror that I struggled to defend my conviction that ~mostly we just want things to be better for ourselves.~
I’m very interested in ancient history. And archeology. I’m subscribed to the antiquities journal which I’ve been tearing up for the last few months.
Mostly archeology news looks like this:
“A cemetery in a highland Tajik village was discovered to observe Islamic burial customs - carbon dated to c. 800s CE -”
Or
“A tomb in Armenia was discovered with an image of a procession of gods - dated to the 870s BCE based on carbon dating and a reference to Assurnasirpal II - figures identified as belonging to the local religion are depicted besides other figures from the Assyrian religious tradition”
BORING SHIT, RIGHT?? But the synthesis of a lot of boring information can let people make better judgements of what the past was like. And in these boring cases we don’t see much violence.
That village of medieval Tajiks seems to have adopted Islamic burial customs without terrifying bloody conflict. - there would have been evidence for this by way of damaged skeletons. - They seem to have been attracted by the wisdom of traveling Muslims, and they were willing to bring new information into their worldview.
And those Assyrian-Armenian artists were simply interested in the fashions and prestige associated with Assyrian courtly culture, and they wanted to depict their local gods belonging to that tradition.
AND ALMOST EVERY NEW ARCHEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY IS LIKE THIS.
Humble. Peaceful. Curious.
29 times out of 30, the material evidence for human activity is, like, a campfire. Or art. Or houses where there are toys and shoes.
But on the internet, that’s not interesting like violence.
My friend listens to podcasts that are about violence in history. Pretty much exclusively it seems.
And most people who are interested in history are similarly attracted to ~the craziest things that have happened~ because of course they are!! It’s more fun!! Ancient stories of heroism and war were popular for the same reason!! Everyone likes a good horror story to pull out from and shiver and say “gosh I can’t believe people ever lived like that”
But.
But there is so so much information on the internet.
You can immerse yourself in oceans of historic violence forever.
And when you do that. It seems like that’s what’s usual. Even though it’s not.
And this is how ALMOST EVERYONE seems to engage with history!!! To such an extant that whenever I suggest that humanity is not inherently depraved, and maybe we’re not doomed to maul ourselves into oblivion forever, most people are wholly dismissive, armed with a thousand case-studies in our worst behavior.
And it frustrates me so much !!!!! What on earth should I say? Should I explain how excited it makes me to see pictures of makeup from ancient Egypt? Plumbing in Chalcolithic Harappan cities? Animal-shaped Incan toys with wheels that look so cute and so fun for little kids to play with?
Almost everyone I know is trying to build a better life for their people. And it really seems like that’s what almost all of us have been trying to do for tens of thousands of years.
We just do it quietly, and I wish more people knew that. It’s hard enough out here.

On October 24th 1774 the Scheihallion Experiment was carried out.
Sounds like a science fiction film doesn’t it, and back in the 18th century it may well have been science fiction.
Six to seven hundred million years ago the area that now forms the Grampian Highlands was a shallow sea. Layer upon layer of sediment was formed from mud eroded from the land, white quartz sands, and limy deposits. As these layers were buried and compressed, they became mudstone, sandstone and limestone. At that time Scotland was at the edge of a continent which included North America, separated by the deep Iapetus Ocean from the rest of Europe. Plate tectonic movements closed this ocean 470 to 430 million years ago, subjecting the buried rocks to great heat and pressure. Mudstone became schist and slate; sandstone became very hard, creamy-white quartzite; all were folded and fractured in complex patterns. At the end of these earth movements the rocks were uplifted to form the Caledonian Mountains.
Perhaps one of the most amazing things about Schiehallion is that this folding and fracturing of the rock layers is so pronounced in the area around the mountain that the mountain itself is almost ‘upside-down’! In other words, the older rock layers can be found at the top of the mountain and the younger layers at the bottom.
Several different rock types can be seen on the main path up Schiehallion,. You may come across a limestone pavement with water-worn fissures and potholes. Locally, these limey soils support unusual plants. The same rock can be seen in quarries and a restored 19th century lime kiln at Tomphubil. . Most of the ridge is grey to white quartzite, with current bedding in a few places and an occasional band of pinkish brown microdiorite. In the Tempar Burn to the northwest is the famous Schiehallion Boulder bed, an ancient glacial tillite.
During the Ice Ages of the last two million years, glaciers flowed east from Rannoch Moor, carving the hard quartzites of Schiehallion into a streamlined ridge and digging deep valleys on either side. The ice has carried blocks of granite and schist, and dropped them all the way along the east ridge, up to a height of about 980m. From there to the summit the path goes over bedrock with only local quartzite boulders.
The experiment of 1774 to weigh the Earth involved measuring the deflection of a plumb line resulting from the gravitational pull of a nearby mountain. Schiehallion was considered the ideal mountain, due to its isolation and almost symmetrical shape. The tiny deflection of a plumb-line from the vertical must be measured relative to the fixed background of the stars, which requires extremely careful measurements on either side of the mountain. The mass of the mountain can be worked out from its volume and the density of its rocks. These values can be used to find the gravitational pull of the Earth, and thus its mass.

The Contractor Chapter Two Halfway
AO3
A dress, heels, and a bit of makeup. She called Marsali and inquired after Fergus.

“He is quite bawl, settling in well. I promise Dr. Beauchamp, to call you if there is any cause for concern.”

“Thank you. I will be by to see him in the morning.”

Maybe  she can unclench a bit. Fergus is in a safe place, well seen to.  She is his mama on record. He is no longer Baby Doe, but Fergus Henry Beauchamp. She breaths out and re-checks herself in the mirror.  Just as the musical note of the Airbnb’s doorbell rings out.

She opens it up and finds her contractor, holding a bottle of whiskey. “Dr. Beauchamp, a wee welcome to Scotland present.” He presents it with a bow. Despite herself, she is charmed.

“Why thank you Mr. Fraser.” She takes it. “I would think it would be Scotch.”

He laughs and she finds herself smiling. “Och Nae, scotch is well and good but in the Highlands of Scotland, whiskey is king.”

She sets it down on a table by her front door. “Shall we?”

He nods and she steps out, joining him. She finds that he smells good. Really good. She forces herself not to lean in and breath him in. Instead she follows him out to his truck.

“Sorry, my sister has the family car. She has a football practice to take my nephew to. So, my truck it is.”

A family man, she wasn’t expecting that. Nor his manners, the way he came around and opened the door for her, offering his hand to help her up. She climbs in and clicks her belt. He is soon beside her.

“A sister, any brothers?”

He grins as he starts the truck. “Aye, the baby, William. Myself and Jenny were fifteen and ten, respectively, when he came. Quite a shock. What about you?”

“Nope, just me. It was just myself and my Uncle Lamb. I lost my parents when I was five.” She can speak of it without tears now.

“I am so sorry.” He places his hand on hers for a second before moving it back to the steering wheel.

“Thank you. I imagine I might have had siblings if they hadn’t … But I am a mama, adopting a little boy, Fergus.”

She sees him smile as he makes a right turn. “Fergus, that is a strong Scottish name. Is he Scottish?”

“I really don’t know.” She tells him the story of how he came to get his name.

“How extraordinary. The lad kens who he is and who his mam is.”

She lights up. “That is true, isn’t it?”

“Aye, we are almost there. This restaurant is the best in all of Scotland.”

“High praise.”

“Well deserved. Glenda Fitz insists that only the best is served.” He pulls up to a sweet little building. It, like all of the Highlights she has seen so far, fits perfectly into the surrounding countryside. He hurries around to open her door. Taken her hand again, he helps her down. They walk in together. The sign says ‘ Mrs. Fitz’s’

“Jamie, I saw your name on the reservations.” She is plumb and sweet faced. Her smile lights up her face and all around her.

“Glenda, meet Dr. Claire Beauchamp. She has inherited the old Mackenzie estate.”

“You are her contractor, I assume?” she states as she turns to face her. “Welcome Dr. Beauchamp.”

“Thank you Mrs. Fitz. Mr. Fraser says you have the best restaurant in the Highlands.”

She, if possible, glows more. “Och, Jamie is a flatterer but, in this case, he is right. Come, you two, I have the best table set aside for you.”

They follow her and Jamie pulls out her seat. She sits and he slips in across from her. A wooden table, shined so she can see herself in. A vase full of bluebells, sits in the center.

“It is beautiful.” Claire gushes.

“Thank you lass. I will give you two a moment and then send Laoghaire to take your order.”

“Ah she is back, is she?”

“Aye, and insisted on your table when I told her you were coming this evening.” She winks and walks away.

“Laoghaire?” Claire inquires when she leaves them.

“Glenda’s granddaughter. She has been to university. Comes back in breaks. She was raised her.”

“Seems like there is a history there.”

He grins. “Jealous?” She blushes.

“Of what? Come Mr. Fraser, this date is just to sooth your honor and to maybe make a better impression so we can revisit the idea of me staying there while you do, what I am sure is to be, excellent work.”

“Flattery will only get you so far Sassanach.”

Before she can respond to the supposed insult, a young blonde thing is at his side.

“Jamie! So nice to see you again. Who is you mate?” she emphasizes the last word.

“Laoghaire, meet Dr. Claire Beauchamp. She is the new owner of the Mackenzie place.”

“Oh then you have your work cut out for you Jamie. Oh, nice to meet you Dr. Beauchamp.” She offers her hand while keeping one on his shoulder. She takes it, keeping her eyes, and squeezes.

“That we do. Let’s  start out with some tea.”

“Right away.” She gives him a smile before slipping away.

“She is quite friendly to you.”

“I have known the lass since she was a wean. She has a crush on me but, is way to familiar, almost family. Then there is her age.”

“I was just saying…”

“I ken Sassanach.”

“That word again. Isn’t it a smear?” Her whiskey colored eyes meet his.

“Not in this case. Just a term of ah, well a kind of nickname. I can return to Dr. Beauchamp or Claire?”

“Sassanach is fine.”

After ordering and settling in to eat, they return to the topic of the renovation.

“Why not? I promise to stay out of the way?”

“It isn’t your Interference, that is the main concern. Your house has sat empty for a long time. It has mold and mildew throughout. Some of the floors will need shored up. It is dangerous Sassanach. Until we get some things done, it isn’t fit for you to spend a lot of time in.”

“What about you? You and your crew will be spending a ton of time there, right?”

“Och, we will but, we ken what we are doing. We will wear protective gear. We ken how to watch our steps. How to get rid of the critters that have made it their home.”

She recalls the raccoons and shudders. “Those raccoons are a bit scary.” She admits.

“They probably aren’t the only ones. There is probably snakes, spiders, rats, and other such vermin.”

“Rats!” She whisper screams. He nods, “Alright, you win. But I wish to move in as soon as I can.”

“Aye Sassanach, as you wish.”

“This is very good.” She says about the food.

“Aye. It is.” They finish eating. He pays the bill and hugs Glenda and Laoghaire. He escorts her back to his truck.

Plumbing Industry Trends to Watch in 2024
In the fast-evolving world of plumbing, staying ahead of the curve is crucial.
As we step into 2024, several trends are poised to shape the industry landscape.
From innovative technologies to sustainability initiatives, here are the top plumbing trends to keep an eye on this year.
Embracing Eco-Friendly Solutions
With environmental concerns taking center stage, eco-friendly plumbing solutions are gaining traction.
One notable trend is the increasing adoption of hydrotherm hot water systems.
These systems utilize renewable energy sources, such as solar power, to heat water efficiently while minimizing carbon emissions.
As sustainability becomes a priority for both consumers and businesses, expect to see a rise in eco-conscious plumbing practices.
Integration of Smart Technology
The era of smart homes is upon us, and the plumbing industry is no exception.
Aquatech Rapid X6, a cutting-edge smart water monitoring system, is set to revolutionize how we manage water usage.
By providing real-time insights and automatic leak detection, these intelligent systems empower homeowners to conserve water and prevent costly damage.
As smart technology continues to advance, expect to see greater integration of these solutions into residential and commercial plumbing systems.
Shift Towards Heat Pump Technology
Traditional water heating methods are giving way to more energy-efficient alternatives, such as the Sanden heat pump in Melbourne.
Unlike conventional water heaters that rely on electricity or gas, heat pumps extract heat from the surrounding air to warm water, making them highly efficient and environmentally friendly.
With incentives for renewable energy adoption on the rise, expect to see increased demand for heat pump technology in the plumbing sector.
Focus on Water Conservation
In an era of increasing water scarcity, conservation efforts are paramount. Plumbers are playing a crucial role in promoting water-saving practices through the installation of low-flow fixtures and efficient irrigation systems.
Additionally, advancements in greywater recycling technology are making it easier to reuse water for non-potable purposes, further reducing strain on freshwater supplies.
As communities grapple with water conservation challenges, expect plumbers to be at the forefront of implementing sustainable solutions.
Emphasis on Health and Safety
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of maintaining clean and hygienic plumbing systems.
From touchless faucets to antimicrobial pipe coatings, there’s a growing emphasis on technologies that enhance health and safety in plumbing.
As public health remains a top priority, expect to see continued innovation in plumbing products and practices aimed at minimizing the spread of illness and ensuring safe water supply.
Conclusion:
Looking Ahead
As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, the plumbing industry is evolving to meet the changing needs of society.
From eco-friendly solutions to smart technology integration, the trends shaping the plumbing landscape in 2024 reflect a commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and innovation.
By staying informed and embracing these trends, plumbers can position themselves for success in a dynamic and ever-changing industry landscape.
