Y'all, there's a new Hildegard von Blingin' video!
The first thing that struck me was that the lyrics required surprisingly little adaptation to be believably medieval.
The second was the Choice she made in the last minute or so of the song. Go listen.
(I have no affiliation with the artist; I'm just a big fan and think people should check this out.)

This is exciting. An old standby of the Oh Hellos, getting the medieval treatment by the famous Hildegard von Blingin' (who has given a lot of similar songs this treatment and who has done this, at least to my amateur's ears, very well). This song also features her brother Friar Funk for a verse. Musical talent seems to run in the family.
In a minor key, those "oh lei, oh lai"s at the end ring like a promise.

Written for the Dime in the Jukebox Fest, for Pumped-Up Kicks by Hildergard Von Blingin'
The greenwood is the king's, and all the beasts in it are his, and no one else may touch them: that's the law. And so the greenwood teems with deer, and rabbits, and boar, and meanwhile there's grit and no meat in the people's stewpots.
My father has gone to the courts to gain our rights. Maybe he'll return vindicated, with a gift for me. And then, maybe not. The king is far away, across the sea, and justice, too, has not been seen for some time.
Maybe I will have a gift for my father when he returns instead.
Am I not king here? Isn't my crooked cap a crown? Isn't my yew longbow justice, my quick eye and strong arm the only law there is?
Run, fattened rabbits, wealthy merchants, greedy nobles, gluttonous priests. The greenwood is mine, and you are my prey.
