Jawan Review
Tumblr media
November 17, 2023
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
In the 1970s, Amitabh Bachchan’s entry into Hindi cinema gave birth to the “Angry Young Man.” He was a hero, who fought against the system, who fought against injustice, and became a voice for the subdued people in society. It was one man against the world. Through the 80s, this phenomena continued, but as the new century neared, the romantic hero emerged and the action hero became an afterthought. People either no longer wished to change the system, or they no longer trusted a lone hero to do it. With the birth of a new generation, softer male leads became the norm with Shah Rukh Khan at the height of romantic stardom.
Though Hindi films let go of this concept, South Indian Cinema, continues to celebrate its heroes through films on injustice with a male lead as savior. So it is only natural that Atlee, a South Indian filmmaker, brings back to Hindi cinema the heroic mass entertainer, ironically starring the very actor who had originally taken away the limelight from the “angry young man” of the 70s and 80s. Jawan follows a man who strives for justice, who wishes to correct a system which favors those who are guilty over the many innocents, and for that, he resorts to vigilantism putting him in the crossfire of both the police and an evil arms dealer.
I did not have great expectations from Atlee. Though his films are entertaining, they have never risen to greatness, barring Raja Rani, which is the best of his work. However, he has great mass appeal and Jawan promises the same. The plot is intricately woven with an amalgamation of elements that tackle many relevant issues in society today. From farmer suicides to hospital inadequacies, by blending real stories into a fictional universe, writer-director Atlee appeals to the struggles of the common man and attempts to raise awareness regarding the flaws in the system that governs Indian society. Alongside important themes, the film’s strength lies in its strongly choreographed action sequences with women at the forefront. Shah Rukh Khan as the man of many names is the hero, but he is surrounded by powerful women fighting for themselves and for others. It is exciting, entertaining, and visually captivating with a thoroughly ‘massy’ feel.
However, my biggest issue with Jawan is the same problem I’ve had with Atlee films in the past, particularly Mersal and Bigil. They’re all over the place. The shift between present and past, the placement of flashbacks, too many characters, too many plot points, everything is a disjointed mess. There isn’t a singular arc keeping the story moving. In an attempt to create suspense, using non-linear storytelling, the makers sacrifice emotions. We begin to connect with a character, or get interested in a certain plot point, but a sudden shift in the story, leaves us hanging. By the time it returns, our emotions no longer remain the same.
Nevertheless, it is entertaining and much credit for that goes to the performances. Every single actor in the cast does a tremendous job: the army of six girls (Lehar Khan, Sanjeeta Bhattarchaya, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Girja Oak, Aaliyah Qureishi), Deepika Padukone in a cameo appearance, Seeza Saroj Mehta as the little girl Suji, Sunil Grover, Ridhi Dogra, Eijaz Khan, and even all those in small bit roles. As for the central trio, anything I say in their praise would be less. Nayanthara is enigmatic and powerful as the law-abiding officer in search of who she believes to be a problematic vigilante. I am glad her stardom is finally extending beyond the borders of the south. Though Vijay Sethupathi has already made his mark on the Hindi audience through Farzi, it is through Jawan his versatility comes forth. I have seen so many actors struggle outside their comfort language, but he doesn’t let his difficulty with Hindi get in the way of his menacing performance. And last but not the least, is the star of the show, Shah Rukh Khan. Comedy, romance, drama, action, there is no genre in which he lacks and Jawan touches upon it all. Such a strong, versatile range of emotions is displayed through one character. This film is a reminder that Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom and aura are unmatched.
Jawan is not perfect, it is not without its flaws. But its entertaining nature, the larger-than-life characters, and Shah Rukh Khan’s explosive comeback make it a worthwhile watch.

Today marks the 20th death anniversary of Uma Devi Khatri aka #TunTun. She was a well-known singer and actress, famous for being the first female comedian in Hindi cinema. Uma was born in 1923 in a small village near Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, India. Tragically, her parents and brother were killed over a land dispute. Uma lost her family when she was very young and had to live as a maid with relatives. Despite these hardships, Uma's life changed when she met Akhtar Abbas Kazi, an Excise Duty Inspector, who supported and encouraged her. During the India-Pakistan partition, Kazi moved to Lahore, but Uma went to Bombay (now Mumbai) to pursue a singing career in movies. They later married in Bombay in 1947. Uma bravely approached composer Naushad Ali in Bombay, asking for a chance to sing, and he gave her an opportunity. She debuted as a singer in the film "Wamiq Azra" (1946) and quickly made a name for herself. Uma had a series of hit songs in the 1940s, including in the movie "Dard" (1947). Her singing career flourished, and she became one of the top playback singers. However, as music styles changed, she found it hard to compete with newer singers. Naushad suggested she try acting, and she debuted in the film "Babul" (1950) alongside Dilip Kumar, where she got her stage name "Tun Tun." Tun Tun became a famous comic actor, appearing in many films over the next decades, including with stars like Amitabh Bachchan. She acted in about 198 films in various languages, becoming a well-loved figure in Bollywood comedy. Her last film appearance was in "Kasam Dhande Ki" (1990). Tun Tun's name became a cultural reference in India, often associated with comic characters.

Alaukik - The Missing Goncharov Adaptation
Tumblr media
Martin Scorsese, creator of Goncharov (1973), greatly appreciated Indian cinema. Thus, it is of no surprise that over a decade later, he decided to bring his best film to an industry that had influenced him so greatly.
In 1990, Scorsese made the journey to Mumbai (then Bombay) to meet with renowned director, Yash Chopra, of Yash Raj Films. He had plans to adapt Goncharov for an Indian audience. It was initally planned to be made years earlier, with Amitabh Bachchan and Anupam Kher leading the film.
Though, with the 1990 version, Scorsese allowed Chopra to take great artistic liberty. Chopra cast two unknowns, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol Mukherjee, in the equivalent roles of Goncharov and Katya. The roles were renamed to Rahul Alaukik and Pooja Khanna. The roles of Sofia and Andrey, now named Nisha Prasad and Rancho Singh, respectively, went to Madhuri Dixit and Aamir Khan who would go on to star in Dil that same year.
Unlike the original, Alaukik really leans into the bisexual polycule subtext, which was near unheard of for Indian cinema at the time and even today. Sadly, the film harbored hard feelings for two of the male leads, seeding the feud between Khan and Khan that would come to an end with 2022's Laal Singh Chaddha. Nonetheless, the movie was extremely popular with both audiences and critics. It established many tropes present in Hindi cinema today, such one lover running towards the other who is on a moving train. This scene, between Khan's Alaukik and Khan's Singh later inspired a very similar scene between Khan and Mukherjee in 1995's Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Instead of the bathhouse scene, Alaukik and Singh sit in a communal bathroom dancing in chairs that look like butts.
In a revision of Goncharov's death scene, Alaukik falls down a set of stairs, with no one around to save him. A small white dog named Buffy passes by and howls.
It shot Mukherjee and Khan to stardom and they would go onto star in many more movies together, all thanks to Scorsese's love of Indian cinema.
Alaukik changed the landscape of Hindi cinema and its legacy is seen throughout films of the time period and of the modern era.
Interestingly, one day on a visit to set, Scorsese noted that Shahrukh had a particularly good banter with an American extra, Leonardo DiCaprio. Years later, Scorsese would try to reunite the two with a movie called Xtreme City, but it never got made.
Alaukik would go onto inspire a number of Hindi adaptations of American films such as Dil Bole Hadippa!, Maqbool, Omkara, and Haider.
Sadly, Alaukik was never issued an international release despite Scorsese's involvement. The only reason anyone today knows about it is because a partial reel of film was found in the Maratha Mandir cinema when they were about to premiere Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
I hope that one day we have more to show for this piece of work that launched the careers of some of India's most well known actors.

★ Pathaan and The  SUPERSTARS Of Indian Cinema!
February 8, 2023
Pathaan has smashed records at the box office and it should put into no doubt who are the superstars of INDIA are. The film confirms the box office clout of Shahrukh Khan which had not gone anywhere despite the last decade not being as kind as the decade before. There was a box office change towards the end of 2000-2010 decade where digital prints allowed far wider releases on day one and as this process got bigger and bigger it meant the genre which was the forte of Shahrukh Khan was never going to get record numbers. But through the 2010-2020 decade the numbers coming with films which were not action films were still huge.
Pathaan had a guest role for Salman Khan and the public response has to seen to be believed and this should be enough for the naysayers who have appreaed due to his last few films not doing as well as expected. Stardom does not dissapear with a few films failing at the box office, just like it does not come overnight and takes many films to establish.
The Hindi film industry is probably the most secular place there is in India but the fact that the biggest stars of India over the last two decades are Muslim has not sat well in some quarters of the country and the media over the last few years. In fact the third biggest also with Aamir Khan though this is arguable with Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar in the fold as well. The cinema going audience does not care one bit about religion and within the industry nobody notices the religion baring when things get bought up from the outside. There are these non secular voices also within the industry but the way the industry has functioned for decades these people soon become outcasts and work will just dry up.
The last few years has seen this Pan India thing pop up so you have regional stars names being put up as the biggest superstars of the country laughable as it may seem. There are no doubt some great directors in the Southern industries so it is possible their films can do well in the Hindi belts but that hardly means the actors in these films become stars and superstardom is far away except for the regional one which they probably have already..
India has seen seven stars achieve megastardom and two of them are Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. The others being Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. There is not one name in sight from regional film industries and yet today you see names like Prabhas, Yash, Allu Arjun and others put up with there with two superstars who are not only the biggest superstars of the day but among the biggest ever.
This is not to say that someone from the regional industry cannot become a huge superstar tomorrow because if the public takes to you then anything can happen but to reach the level of above names will take some doing not only for the regional stars but even for Hindi filmstars.
The simple reason why the the big superstars have come from the Hindi film industry is because the language has a wider reach. If other languages had a reach as wide as Hindi then maybe it would be a different story. Yes movies can be dubbed but that is the film reaching out and not the actor.
Basically the negativity towards the Hindi film industry has led to many claims as to which is the biggest film industry and who are the biggest stars and when the national media is like this you get the regional one badmouthing Hindi cinema as and pushing their own which is natural. But at the end of the day nothing much has changed despite the claims as the HINDI film industry easily remains the biggest film industry in India as content may go wrong but that does not change the reach.
As for the stars, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan remain the biggest stars in India and that does not look like changing for sometime yet even though the starpower may not be as big as it was other points in their careers

the city of Mumbai is famously popular for its entertainment industry "Bollywood". Bollywood is a Hindi film industry which has the biggest entertainment capital in the entire world it produces upto 1500 - 2000 films each year there by producing double the amount of films from Hollywood.
This is also the reason why many people from around India who come from small families who struggle to make a living come to Maharashtra, Mumbai with one dream that is to become a successful actor not only Indian citizens but people from Nepal wnd Bangladesh come to India to fulfill their dreams, unfortunately as beautiful as the industry of Bollywood may seem with all the glamour and the wealth the comes with being a super star or a successful actor it is not so easy to get into.

"I'm Batman," Christopher Nolan
Christopher Nolan is regarded as the one of the best filmmakers in the world today. His recent multi-million hits such as Interstellar and Oppenheimer are believed to go down in history as cult classics and study material for the new filmmakers. One of his movies, Memento, is beloved by so many Indians that it got adapted two times in the country—one in Tamil and one in Hindi. The Hindi adaptation of Memento, named Ghajini, saw the celebrated actor Aamir Khan working in the lead role.
Christopher Nolan is an IP in himself. His movies don’t need catchy songs and nude girls—just the name of Christopher Nolan in the credits is enough.
And obviously, like many others, his fame was not linear. It was exponential. And what made his rise so exponential was his adaptation of the Batman character from the DC comics in Batman Begins.
But, what’s so cool about this movie that it’s still regarded as one of the best Batman movie by many? Like many questions, Christopher Nolan makes the answer to this question crystal-clear.
***
Plot
DC sure has some really cool storylines up its sleeves. And, Christopher Nolan tapped into that very same potential that the DC’s film department is trying to tap into for years.
Batman Begins starts with Bruce Wayne being in jail, where he is fighting some bullies. And, since he’s on the winning side, it’s Bruce who is punished for his punches, not the unnamed bullies.
Then he meets this one guy who promises to change his life. He knows why Bruce is inside, and he knows how to get him out of what he’s made of his life. And so begins his training.
And so, by overcoming his past, his fears, and his problems, he becomes a hero.
There’s a lot—a DAMN lot—in the movie to praise.
Firstly, I’d just talk about the overall feel of the storyline. The cinematography and the screenwriting perfectly portray the vibes of the Batman.
It’s dark. And it’s mature.
Like other superhero films, it’s not a kids’ movie. And even though it’s a little hard to believe, the movie throws it in your face just perfectly—it’s no jokes. It’s no games. All of this is serious.
Batman is a character who doesn’t joke, after all. Batman means business. And his aura is perfectly portrayed in the film. The story of Bruce Wayne as he becomes the Batman, both literally and metaphorically, is the story of a man rising up from level zero.
Like others such as the Iron Man and Spider-Man, Batman is not going to crack some laughs on screen before giving a tight punch in the face. And, it’s that very essence that distinguishes Batman from the others.
The screenwriting was really mature. There was no fat, and every single action and dialogue advanced the story further.
The story didn’t just tell you stuff in your face—it shows you. No scene felt like it was just added to tell you something, but as things move forward, the characters’ actions reveal their personalities on their own. And that kind of show, not tell story structure is really rare—but equally important—in films.
***
Action
Action is one of the main ingredients for a superhero film. I mean, you don’t call that guy a superhero who doesn’t even fight, right?
But sadly, there are plenty of movies and shows that fail to tell good stories just because the way they’re filled with unnecessary action.
The thing is—a good superhero film needs reasonable action. A superhero doesn’t fly around picking up fights. I mean, they do, but not always. Action scenes need to advance the storyline and make sure one of the sides—or the viewer—learns something about the other, and not be present just because the audience likes it.
The fight scene needs to have some stakes and consequences. Without them, it feels unnecessary, and the story is better off without those scenes.
Luckily, Batman Begins is for people just like you and me who hate such unneeded action, but absolutely love it when it’s there for a reason.
And, these scenes are really eye-pleasing. I love the way the trains wreck and cars fly and shit like that happens, you know. Christopher Nolan is a master when it comes to directing such action scenes, and he left no stones unturned when it came to such scenes.
***
Characters
A story is made by its characters. It’s the characters that move the story forward, after all.
And, the side characters are not really that much interesting. Except the antagonists and the protagonist, there was not really any other interesting character with an interesting set of arc and backstory.
But, it doesn’t mean the characters were bad. They were exceptionally good. Each character had a distinct personality than the other, and their motives were clear. There was real work done on crafting these characters and their traits.
But, in terms of characters, the story really shines on the character of Bruce Wayne. Bruce, before becoming the Batman, was filled with hatred, anger, and vengeance. He hated his past, he feared his past, and he wanted to overcome it. He wanted it to never happen. He thought all of it was his fault. He wanted to do something. He wanted to change it.
He wanted to die. To end it all.
But, he was successfully able to rise on top of it and finally leave it behind. He started to love the city that killed his own parents, and what more character development do you need?
The story makes you sympathize for the character—drown in his depression, and smile on his success.
This gradual development in attitude… felt so smooth.
Another thing I want to absolutely praise about Bruce Wayne is how he changes his whole persona when he’s wearing his mask.
And that’s something that differentiates this film from the other films. The mask changes Bruce. Bruce is darker, more menacing, and more responsible when he’s under that mask. Under that mask, Bruce becomes Batman.
Batman and Bruce Wayne are two distinct characters that live inside the same body. And the story doesn’t fail to make it believable.
***
The Climax
Another thing I liked about the film was the way it reached its climax, and the way it all concluded in the end. I won’t be giving you spoilers, but I’d have to praise the way his pasts again come in front of his eyes when the story nears its climax.
I mean, just a few movies are able to actually connect the start and the end of the story so well.
It was an unexpected turn of events, but when we hear the explanation, there’s no way denying that it absolutely makes sense. We never thought about it, but when we do, it makes damn sense to do something like this.
The end not only symbolizes the win of good over evil. It signifies the end of the metamorphosis of the Bruce Wayne as he turns more and more into Batman.
Yeah, in the movie, he slowly shreds what made Bruce the Bruce Wayne, the head of the Wayne Empire, and starts to become the Batman. And there could have been no better end to the movie. Really.
***
Conclusion
One thing I hate about the movie is how it felt a little… rushed in the beginning. I wanted scenes to last a little longer, the dialogues to be a little lesser to-the-point. I wanted to see some more of some scenes, because I feel that those little scenes and dialogues would have made some good drama in the story.
But, I need to accept the fact that it was absolutely necessary, because they were not just individual scenes—that this story was never about those individual scenes.
Until next time.

Remembering #KamalAmrohi on his 31st death anniversary (11/02/93).
As a director, he developed a style that combined a stylised direction with minimalist performances. This style was different from the one with expressive acting that was common in the Indian cinema of his period.
Kamal Amrohi was born in Amroha, which was part of British India and is now in Uttar Pradesh, India. He changed his name to Kamal Amrohi later. He was related to two Pakistani writers, Jaun Elia and Rais Amrohvi, as their first cousin. In 1938, Kamal left his hometown to study in Lahore, which is now in Pakistan. There, a singer named K. L. Saigal found him and brought him to Mumbai to work in films. He started his film career at Sohrab Modi's film company, Minerva Movietone, and worked on movies like "Jailor," "Pukar," and "Bharosa."
Kamal Amrohi became a film director in 1949 with his first movie "Mahal," which had famous actors Madhubala and Ashok Kumar. This movie was known for its music. He directed only four movies in total, including "Daaera" with Meena Kumari and Nasir Khan, and "Pakeezah," which took a long time to make and was released in 1972. "Pakeezah" is considered a special movie in India, even though it had some flaws. Meena Kumari, who was a famous actress and Kamal's wife, praised "Pakeezah" as Kamal's tribute to her. His last movie was "Razia Sultan" in 1983. He also started making a film called "Majnoon" but it was never finished.
Kamal Amrohi also wrote scripts for other directors and was one of the writers for the famous movie "Mughal-e-Azam" in 1960, which won him an award. His style of directing was known for being different and unique, focusing more on the visual style and less on dramatic acting.
In 1958, he opened a studio named Kamaal Studios, but it closed after three years. He had planned to make another movie called "Aakhri Mughal" but it was never made. Film maker J P Dutta wanted to make this movie in the late 1990s and again in 2007, but it didn't happen. Kamal Amrohi died on February 11, 1993, in Mumbai, 21 years after his wife, Meena Kumari, passed away. He was buried next to her in Mumbai.
Six days after he died, a newspaper in the UK called The Independent wrote about him, saying he was a big figure in the Hindi film industry for over 50 years.

MOVIE INDUSTRY
Indian Film Industry -What Is Bollywood?
The Indian film making industry is known as Bollywood to the mainstream audience. But in reality, Bollywood is part of the Indian film industry.   Indian cinema history bollywood is the actual name of India’s Hindi film industry. The country’s film industry contains various languages. Including Tamil (Kollywood), Telugu (Tollywood) and Hindi (Bollywood).
In fact, Kollywood is the largest producer with over 260 films. Tollywood is in second place with over 250 films, followed by Bollywood in third place with over 220 films. But when it comes to global box office presence, Bollywood is at the forefront with the largest numbers concerning sales.
Where Is Bollywood?
Indian flim industry bollywood is located in The city of Mumbai. The Mumbai film industry was formerly the Bombay film industry before Bombay changed its name to Mumbai in 1995.  Mumbai is considered the birthplace and namesake of “Bollywood” in India. The city is the richest in India and also in the top 20 richest cities in the world. Top 5 Indian flims due to the high illiteracy rate and different languages, the theater was limited to only a few.  Therefore theater never transcended to a level of mass consumption by the Indian audience.  The film was easier to produce and consume in mass by the Indian audience. As a result, the film became the biggest and most popular platform in India.
The History Of The Indian Film Industry?
Raja Harishchandra is a 1913 Indian silent film that is often considered the first full-length Indian feature film. The story was about a righteous Indian King who never told a lie. This might be the film that opened the door to what is now known as Bollywood. India’s film industry started about 100 years ago.  term “Bollywood” was coined many years later. The Bollywood movie vibrant song-and-dance routines that have become popular with millions of fans worldwide are a signature element in Bollywood films. Bollywood has influenced all aspects of daily life and culture in India. The film industry is the main form of entertainment and also has a cult following.
As in Hollywood, Bollywood fashion is often imitated and shows up in general day-to-day attire, including a big influence on wedding attire. An outfit worn by an actor or actress in a hit film can immediately influence the new style of the clothing industry in India. The origins of early Indian cinema song and dance routines were started by artists in Parsi theatre. Parsi-style plays were a fusion of fantasy meets reality, including the signature song-and-dance routine that exists to this day.  India’s film industry including Bollywood has grown exponentially and major American studios such as 20th Century Fox to Disney have a presence in India’s film industry.
BOLLYWOOD IMPACT ON FLIM INDUSTRY
The French physiologist  took the first series photographs with a single instrument in 1882; once again the was the analysis of motion too rapid for perception by the . Marey invented the chronophotographic gun, a  shaped like a rifle that recorded 12 successive photographs per second, in order to study the movement of birds in flight. These images were imprinted on a rotating glass plate (later, paper roll film), and Marey subsequently attempted to project them.
Like Muybridge, however, Marey was interested in deconstructing movement rather than synthesizing it, and he did not carry his experiments much beyond the realm of high-speed, or instantaneous, series photography. Muybridge and Marey, in fact, conducted their work in the spirit of scientific inquiry; they both extended and elaborated existing technologies in order to probe and analyze events that occurred beyond the  of human perception. The new movie release who came after would return their discoveries to the realm of normal human vision and exploit them for profit.

JO TUMHE HO PASAND..USS ZAMANE KI BAAT KARENGE - THE BLOG DILIP KUMAR (SUPPOSEDLY) LIKED! - REPOSTING MY BLOG: ‘HISTORY OF  HINDI CINEMA - A QUALITATIVE OVERVIEW’
Attraction of professional arts, for largest part,as-'Legitimized seller of "love" as product of livelihood!'. Ofcourse, therein, love has-own range of depths/shallows,& varied duality,to contend. A great precipice,to start exploring..but c/f from it,an #art, fewer know or sustain..
For- Many can teach u getting beaut bodies, few on beaut thots, but hardly any abt beaut feelings. Like asking for way to local(small-big city,town,village)temple..then once in temple complex, for way to shrine..but once there, jus staying..staying..& staying, even where everyone's left for the day.
The dynamics of #cinema has & will always stay same ie as btwn "thirsty" & "well".
CINEMA-VIEWING BEING ONE OF THE PRIME EXERCISES IN DETACHED OBSERVATION OF LIFE, IN ALL IT'S VARIOUS SHADES & HUES & COLORS.
What's changed thru 10-11 decades, from inception,is defn of "normal","aspirational",& "extraordinary". To illustrate- Thru 1910-2010s, ppl been as thirsty for fun time, as today..
In 1910s-20s, mere sight o' moving screen was extraordinary, so silent films ran thru paying masses like wildfire! But by 30s,turned normal. Next extraordinary, was 'sound'! Much that, most films thru 30s had min 40-50 songs embedded, even above stories. SONG then the new "aspiration".
Ppl like Santaram did attempt (laborious costly) 'colour' in cinema (utilizing German technique) in early 30s, but tis said the results were too garish to impress & inspire. Phut. Till mid-60s,when use of colour became noticeably attractive, & an aspirational feature for all.
Back to 40s,when song moved from aspiration to normal..igniting hunger for QUALITY. Also over-scrupulous revolution time, ppl began nit-picking, lending gen bad/cheap name to cin..igniting makers unto 'class' stories,actors,presentation.. "CREAM" the new aspiration, over normals.
In process, producing some "extraordinary" works & artists in art. So it continued, the cream shuttling btwn normal to extraordinary story-tell,song-write-singing,& visual delight..till mid-70s. When another 'revolution of distrustful' then, drove ppl to aspire "STIR OVER CREAM"!
Giving rise to "aspiring to extraordinarily mad/energetic/angry" cinema of 80s! Right to 90s..when blood fest turn passe,& liberalization-globalization, birthed the "western aspiration". A hazy diffused "POWDER" vision at that, translating to fluff-floaty cinema thru 90s in gen.  ....  Another valid perspective being, this 80s period also the time where arose the brainchild of  the "Formula film", 'designed to keep viewers perenially on the cusp of high emotional tension & flex', that being the seeming sole objective of all art & story-telling, albeit mostly in the action zone then, but transferred to the romantic & love zone by 90s, & that's continued 30 yrs on till today! A combined 30+ yrs era that can also pehaps be called "The Masala Era". Ofcourse as always discounting few exceptions here & there. This period of around early to mid 90s, that we now call "The Poppy Era", also being the time of advent of "Big TV", giving further door-to-door prominence to this "forever on the cusp" genre of entt.
Unto next mil! 2000s brought, never b4 surge in "entt industry" as viable lucrative career option for the vast "STATUS aspirational" masses in urban & semi-urban India..& of varied art-non art backgrounds. And many more open avenues for exhibition. And "BRAND" turned aspiration!
By 2010s, art had turned the normal! Twas NUMBERS-in name placement,platform-trumpeting,advert & hither-tither product launching, & the "ability to breach thru, OVER AND ABOVE ART", that turned into the visible aspiration for a majority. "MONEY POWER", the extraordinary feat here!
With the 2020s came the biggest worldwide pandemic, after more than a century, that caused billions of lives & equally high artistic occupations to totally shut down, for close to year to 2 years, also bringing with it the perhaps forced reallocation of artistic funding to the less risky proposition of 'web-series', a platform that had shown some promise in bits & parts since very late 2010s, a format allowing much more time & scope for 'slice-of-life art' within the Hindi realms, a form almost lost to it since the late 60s to mid 70s. And a breath of fresh air to art & hope within its being, in quality & it's quantity. This new phenomena seemingly also inspiring the cinema makers to also change tracks, & attracting that fan- base. Only time will tell, if this can result in a further evolution & return to the more generally artistic life art of 60s, or if this be merely a passing phase till the Hin cin scene regains it's lost reputation amongst masses (caused a lot on account of certain suspected if not altogether known high indiscretions & gross misuses of the money & connection power that 2010s as mentioned above brought in hordes to the new status aspirational lot & their controllers).
And cinema history goes on.. Dunno if bridging urban-semi divides, lower status thirsts, enuf, to get back to artistically congenial & largely productive creamy or stirring times! But #IndiesAllTimeHindis in a few fun part-time research yrs,has surely well roller-coastered thru Ind's decadence. For what its worth.🙏
