no but adipurush is so fucking funny to me. they made a movie about sri ram SPECIFICALLY to get the hindutva mobs to show up to the theater and make bank with their 700 crore budget. they cast veteran actors like Saif Ali Khan and powerful action heroes like Prabhas (i've neer seen anything of Kriti Sanon but i think she's good too). the director was also not horrible as in he had won filmfare awards earlier.

and it's such a clusterfuck that it's not even funny anymore. the actors are getting sexist and islamophobic trolls at them for daring to explore a FICTIONAL take on the Ramayana. the cgi is so bad that it makes me miss Magadheera. the script fits with the phantom menace and The Room. they had every ingredient needed to make a good propaganda film and they blew it so hard. what the fuck.

In a time of rampant Hindu nationalism, when Modi and his ruling party, the BJP, are defining the Indian nation in strictly Hindu terms, Bollywood's fantasy secularism in the form of Pathaan has come to reinforce Hindutva's gains over Indian Muslims and over Kashmir while putting a liberal spin on it.

By the logic of the script, Pakistan’s anger towards India over its actions in Kashmir is effectively reduced to one man's personal quest for vengeance. What Kashmiris themselves may want is not even a question or a consideration in the film. They are simply part of India, whether they like it or not.

Many thoughts on monkey man and since I have a final to submit in 48 hours now is the perfect time to get them out. Not surprisingly another movie in which women are not real people but serve to stand in as men's motivations/succour (the only woman who approaches reality is Queenie, the oppressive boss/pimp). Dev Patel should rightly have fallen in love with one of the many women at the temple in which he recuperated, and I'm pissed that he didn't. If you're doing all the action movie tropes anyway, healing > falling in love > renewed motivation is literally THEE trope and the only reason it doesn't happen is because the creators were like, I am happy to include trans aesthetics and this weird orientalized mysticism, but trans ppl as real people who have sexual potential with the protagonist is a bridge too far!!!!

I do think it was impressive of this film (made in 2021? earlier?) to anticipate ram mandir, to anticipate it would result in more dispossession, and to show indigenous people at the forefront of that dispossession; most action movies are not interested in systemic questions and don't have the hero putting aside the guy who killed his mom to focus instead on a symbolic stand-in for hindutva; I was also impressed by the effort to show some of the relations between hindutva and industry and worker conditions; the ooh-look-how-gritty stylized slum and rickshaw chase sequences were whatever, but I really did like that we got to spend some time with the (oft vilified) Indian stray dog. For the constraints it was operating within (the action movie genre + literally no precedent of a mainstream movie set in India that deals with the dynamics of hindutva/fascism) it was a good first step. The reclamation of such images appears to be Patel’s goal—one he shares with numerous Hindu leaders who have continued to battle Hindu nationalism. But the use of Hindu imagery as a call to violence, reminiscent of the Hindutva project, is central to Kid’s mission, resulting in narrative dissonance. In comparison, the movie’s villains only use Hinduism as a façade for violence and financial gain, rather than as a sincere fixture of their fanaticism. They represent Hindutva only in the abstract, echoing its power structures without its ideology. Kid, meanwhile, perhaps inadvertently, embodies it in both belief and action. In a key flashback, Rana—acting on Shakti’s orders—clears out Kid’s forest-adjacent village so the land can be used for industrial growth. This bears a striking resemblance to the Indian government’s recent attempts to evict thousands of Muslims along India’s Eastern border and millions of indigenous people from tribal lands. The BJP’s political opponents believe these land seizures are an attempt to transfer tribal resources to corporate allies, not unlike Shakti’s plan for Kid’s village. However, the metaphor is muddled. Rather than framing Kid’s community as an oppressed caste, religion, or tribe, the only visible culturally specific moment involves the villagers enjoying a marionette re-telling of the Ramayana, which is interrupted by incendiary violence. In the movie’s purview, Hinduism is under attack from something non-Hindu, or falsely Hindu, rather than from dangerous factions of Hinduism itself. This grants Kid permission to weaponize it freely, sans conflict or spiritual reckoning—a thematic tension the movie never reconciles.
