I Gouf'd It or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Chrome Marker (Part 1)

I love the Gouf so much, I've already built 3 different hg Goufs (even the crimson Gouf custom from the Breaker line, and I don't like those). A master grade Gouf was always in the pipeline, but from what I knew about the various master grades, I knew I did NOT want the Gouf custom. A victim of the tides of time, like all of us will someday be, but I learned the Gouf 2.0 was built on the inner frame of the Mg Zaku ii I had built a few months ago, and when I saw this guy at a hobby store near me I caved instantly.

There was no concrete plan going in, as far as the look goes. I could have done the same reckless weathering I had done on my Zaku a few months back, but answer me this: is this a Zaku, boy?

Inner Frame

Of course, the Gouf has that vulcan pod hand, which is technically armor and did not make its way onto the inner frame. He reacted accordingly:

I always build the inner frame first; I like to have the thing in front of me so I can figure what I want next. Y'know, before we commit to armoring. Critically, I wanted to see where the inner frame would be exposed on the finished kit so I could commit to something I only halfway attempted on my eg RX-78: Chrome paint

As you can see, I was only marking where the inner frame would be exposed, being in an idle position or articulated (yeah, I don't paint the miniatures, we'll have to kiss about it)

What stopped me from using the new-ish chrome paint Gundam marker so much in the past was my inexperience with the thing. I didn't like how the paint smudged so easily, I didn't like it's lack of uniform coverage, and at a point I started wondering if this was a fault of the pen or my own inability to make the thing work. I mean, I've seen other people use the same marker to waaaay greater effect than I did, and at that point I had to accept it was a me thing. So, I tried two things:

let the paint dry for longer than I had previously

take due care with the pieces that would be exposed

You'll notice I'm very specific where that paint goes. Not pictured is when I chromed out the cockpit so the orange translucent plastic would really shine later. speaking of which...

The Armor

If I send Bandai a nice enough letter, do you think they'll let me marry this thing?

No panel lining yet, but if I stopped right here I might be satisfied. These MG monoeye kits are always so cash right out the box. My gamble on going chrome for the joints is paying off nice too. There's a few more spots to get now that I look at pictures, namely the wrists, but the boy's looking nice.

Going to be panel lining and decals tomorrow but I'm already rubbing my hands going nyeh hehehehehehe just posing this thing on my desk. Might tighten up some of the joints which are already flopping around a little, but for the kit itself there is very little to complain about.
