Glenn Hoddle: Ex-England manager 'responding well' after being taken seriously ill

Ex-England and Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle is “responding well” to treatment after being taken to hospital in a serious condition on Saturday.

Hoddle was taken ill after appearing as a pundit for BT Sport earlier in the day on his 61st birthday.

“The condition is serious but Glenn is receiving specialist treatment and responding well,” a spokesman said.

Hoddle earned 53 England caps and is considered to have been one of the best players of his generation.

BT presenter Jake Humphrey earlier confirmed Hoddle was “taken seriously ill at the BT Sport studio this morning”.

The station’s Saturday afternoon football results show was cancelled as a result.

The spokesman added: “Earlier today Glenn collapsed at the BT Sport studios – he received immediate medical attention on set and was transferred by paramedics to a hospital in London.

“His family are with him and would like to thank everyone for their support. They have also asked to respect their privacy at this time.”

Gary Lineker, the Match of the Day presenter and former Tottenham and England striker, posted on social media: “Hugely worrying news that Glenn Hoddle collapsed at the BT studios earlier. Thoughts are with him and his family. Come on, Glenn.”

As a player, Hoddle won the FA Cup and Uefa Cup with Tottenham and also had spells with Monaco, Swindon and Chelsea.

Hoddle became player-manager at Swindon and Chelsea, and is credited with turning the west London side into a cosmopolitan outfit by signing Netherlands great Ruud Gullit, who went on to replace him as boss at Stamford Bridge.

From there he managed England for two and half years, taking them to the 1998 World Cup, but his reign ended in controversy when he admitted a “serious error of judgement” after suggesting disabled people were being made to pay for the sins of past lives.

He went on to manage Southampton, Tottenham and Wolves, before continuing coaching and his career as a TV pundit.

Former Spurs team-mates were quick to send their support to Hoddle on social media.

Ex-Argentina midfielder Ossie Ardiles said: “Get well soon Tommy! Our thoughts and prayers with him and his family.”

Former goalkeeper Ray Clemence urged Hoddle to “stay strong”, while Chris Waddle, another ex-England international said: “Get well soon, Glenn. Our thoughts are with you.”

Brighton boss Chris Hughton, twice an FA Cup winner with Spurs alongside Hoddle, said: “Glenn is a friend, I have known him for a long time back to my Spurs youth days. He was a model professional, the one we looked up to and we wish him all the best.”

Ex-Spurs defender Graham Roberts said: “Thinking of the greatest player I have ever played with, we know you will be fine Glenn, thinking of you mate.”

Chris Waddle insists that Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle is the best player he ever played with, per The Football Faithful.

What’s the word?

Waddle, a dazzling left winger during his heyday, played for the likes of Spurs, Newcastle United, Marseille and Sheffield Wednesday, and he also won a multitude of caps for England.

He played alongside the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Didier Deschamps, Jean-Pierre Papin and Peter Beardsley.

But he maintains that Hoddle, a player revered as a legend at Spurs, is the finest technical player he has ever played alongside.

In an interview with The Football Faithful, Waddle said: “Glenn Hoddle was the most naturally gifted footballer I played with. Just two-footed. Obviously lacked a bit of pace and a lot of people said he wasn’t physical enough for the English game.

“Technically, I’ve been lucky to play with some great players and played against great players. And he’s up there, Glenn, with the best of them, in terms of natural talent there’s no doubt about it. “He wanted to win, he was a very positive person. We saw that as a manager, he did well with England until obviously, it all went pear-shaped, but it wasn’t because of the football.

“You know as a footballer, he was just a great player. For me he was great because if you made a run he would hit you, he was like a quarterback. So he was the most naturally gifted player I’d say I played with.

“I was lucky to enough to play with some, in my eyes great players, but when I look back I always thought the most naturally gifted was Glenn.”

Those goals

Hoddle scored some genuinely fantastic goals during his playing career.

One, against Watford, saw him spin on the ball in the box and chip the goalkeeper, sending the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box on the right flank.

But it wasn’t just that.

He could score free-kicks and penalties, he could beat three or four players on a run, sit the goalkeeper down and roll the ball into the back of the net, or he could just thump a 20-yard effort into the back of the net.

Waddle was a wizard, too. But Hoddle was better; as the saying goes, game recognises game.

Ross County's Fontaine launches music career

Ross County defender Liam Fontaine has hit the right note with fans after releasing his own single.

Called “Life Lessons”, the new hit has already attracted close to a combined 10,000 listens on Spotify and YouTube.

Former Hibernian centre-back Fontaine, 32, wrote the song while recovering from injury.

“All my team-mates that have heard Life Lessons, and a couple of my other tracks I have done, absolutely buzz off of them,” Fontaine said recently.[1]

“It’s hard to explain but I find it so satisfying seeing them enjoy what I created.”

Footballers who hit the charts

Fontaine is not the first footballer to pick up the microphone. Others have also attempted to show they have the X factor on and off the pitch.

Former Rangers midfielder Paul Gascoigne, who will be inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame later this month, reached number two in the UK charts in 1990 with “Fog On The Tyne”. He didn’t stop there, also appearing on “Geordie Boys” and “Let’s Have A Party”.

England midfielders Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle appeared on Top of the Pops in 1987 with “Diamond Lights”, which made it to number 12. Their follow-up single “It’s Goodbye” was apt, reflecting as it did the end of their chart domination.

That wasn’t the only time Waddle attempted a duo, also teaming up with another former Ibrox star Basile Boli in 1991 on “We’ve Got A Feeling”.

Sticking with England, John Barnes’ iconic rap on New Order’s “World in Motion” before Italia 90 nearly didn’t happen. Gascoigne was originally earmarked to do it but his Geordie accent proved too strong, and Barnes blew the producers away with his version.

Kevin Keegan was “Head Over Heels in Love” in 1979, Ian Wright sang “Do The Right Thing” in 1993, and Andy Cole gave the singing career a crack in 1999 with “Outstanding”. No-one dared tell Vinnie Jones his effort in 2002 with “Big Bad Leroy Brown” was not up to scratch.

Back in the days when a Scotland World Cup song was a regular occurrence, the Tartan Army were treated to many a hit. In 1974 there was “Easy Easy”, and four years later they teamed up with Rod Stewart to belt out “Ole Ola”. In 1996 Rod even got the Euro 96 squad up on stage at a concert in the USA to sing “Purple Heather”.

Marcus Rashford made his England debut in May 2016 and has scored three goals for his country

A sublime goal, the man-of-the-match award, a confident “swagger” and the widespread backing of television and radio pundits.

So has Marcus Rashford, star of England’s 2-0 friendly win over Costa Rica at Elland Road, done enough to convince manager Gareth Southgate he should be in the starting XI for the World Cup opener against Tunisia on 18 June?

Southgate refused to be drawn on whether he had decided on his starting line-up for the game in Volgograd.

However, Rashford’s impressive performance in Leeds convinced a host of former England players and managers that the 20-year-old Manchester United forward should be picked ahead of Raheem Sterling.

Former Three Lions striker Ian Wright said Rashford should get the nod over the Manchester City forward, who struggled to impress in the friendly win over Nigeria at the weekend and was booked for diving.

“I’d go with Rashford because that’s exactly what we need from a second striker,” Wright told ITV. “I love him there.”

Rashford has scored three goals in 19 appearances for his country, while Sterling, 23, has two in 38 caps and has gone 20 England games without a goal, last finding the net in October 2015 against Estonia.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Southgate said: “Marcus is desperate to do well and we said to him and all the players we were expecting mistakes to be made.

“If they’re not, we’re not trying hard enough to take risks and be creative. If you’re doing those things then occasionally you get the moments we got tonight. He is a wonderful striker of the ball from distance.

“We have got great competition for places throughout the team – you saw that tonight. We’ve a decision to make for the first game, but we’ll need people to come into matches to accelerate them, and sometimes to defend.

“We’ll need that competition and we’ve had three weeks of excellent preparation. We have a platform to build into the tournament.”

Speaking to ITV, Southgate added: “What pleased me most is that Marcus enjoyed his football tonight. He played with a real swagger. He had a difficult end to the season, having to play on his own as a No 9 at times. He is still filling out – we sometimes forget how old he is.”

Former England winger Chris Waddle, speaking on BBC Radio 5 live: “Rashford played as a No 10 and not a No 9, so that’s what we should judge him on.

“His movement and his first touch was great and I just think he has the ability to go past players and score goals. He does it with an end product, which is the difference.

“If you look at Sterling, he gives the ball away a bit more in easy positions and I think Rashford plays better in an England shirt.

“Even though Rashford is younger, he’s more consistent.”

Former England striker Ian Wright, speaking on ITV: “Rashford took his opportunity. He got half a yard and bang. That’s what Harry Kane does and what, unfortunately, Sterling doesn’t do.”

Former England defender Lee Dixon told ITV: “The thing with Rashford is he ticked every box – his energy, his hold-up play, his enthusiasm.

“Everything he did he did well. On 89 minutes he still had enthusiasm to drive into the box. I think he’s played himself into the team against Tunisia.”

Ex-England boss Glenn Hoddle, speaking on ITV: “It’s really given Gareth a nice headache for the opening game.

“I’d like to see him up front against Tunisia. You wouldn’t want to play against him and Kane.”

‘Anything is possible’

Rashford said after the game he needed to improve as he gets ready to represent his country at a major tournament for the second time – he came on briefly against Iceland at Euro 2016 as the Three Lions were eliminated.

“I still need to get in the box a bit more to finish off chances,” he said.

“It means a lot to be involved but going to the World Cup and playing a major part is my main aim. Anything is possible and we have to go there with the highest expectations.”

On his goal, Rashford added: “You work on them in training every day and when one comes up in a game it’s a reward.

“I feel in good physical form leading up to the tournament.”

El fútbol, el deporte rey, el balompié, la pelotica fina, el opio del pueblo, la lucha de titanes, nuestro deporte nacional, venerado por tantos y despotricado por otros es considerado casi una institución más en numerosos países del mundo. Como en una orquesta donde la maquinación de varios interpretes determina el posterior éxito o profundo fracaso de un ensamble, un equipo de fútbol depende de las capacidades de sus atletas.

Podemos ver las similitudes entre el caso de Francesco Totti en la Roma y un Tony Iommi en Black Sabbath, fieles a sus ensambles en cada caso o conjuntos nimiamente construidos como la Naranja Mecánica de Rinus Michels y Rainbow de Ritchie Blackmore, o estrepitosos fracasos como la próxima Copa Mundial a desarrollarse en Catar y… bueno, no hay nada así de escandaloso en ningún otro lado.

En fin, los paralelos existen y son fáciles de percibir a simple vista, pero que pasa cuándo una de las dos realidades se ve perturbada por la otra? Sí señoras y señores, aquí me propongo a analizar diferentes casos en los que futbolistas decidieron que lo suyo también podía ser la industria sonora y osarse a cantar, unos con mejores resultados que otros, pero todos indudablemente fascinantes, con ustedes un equipo constituido por las mejores dualidades deportivo-musicales del mundo:

Alexi Lalas - Pretty Mess (Estados Unidos)

En una de las entradas más sorprendentes de este texto, el defensor central (reconvertido a mediocampista por motivos de originalidad y falta de jugadores en dicha posición) norteamericano nos sacude con uno de sus cuatros álbumes de estudio (si, eso fue tal cual lo leyeron) de rock alternativo, al mejor estilo MTV. Y qué puedo decir? Nada mal, a diferencia de lo lejana y ajena que fue la carrera del 96 veces llamado al combinado yanqui, este tema de 3 minutos (donde interpreta vocales y guitarra) logra crear una conexión perfecta conmigo y remitirme a todo ese maltrecho y menospreciado sendero de rock alternativo que en funestos y mozos años recorrí.

Ruud Gullit - Not The Dancing Kid (Holanda)

Esta extraña tonada de pop reggae graba en 1984 por ‘el tulipán negro’ sería el primero de sus intentos como músico en paralelo a su carrera futbolistica, y para sorpresa de muchos, logró puntear en el Top 10 de Holanda de aquel entonces. Gullit, quién siempre fue un abanderado de la lucha contra el racismo en el deporte europeo (desde los 16 años usó rastas en Holanda, algo nunca antes visto) nos muestra en este tema todo lo que conlleva la aceptación de las raíces y la identidad, en una sociedad que en aquel entonces no lo miraba con los mismos ojos que lo ve hoy por hoy (dos Champions League, una Eurocopa y varias ligas en Italia y Holanda, vaya precio)

Franz Beckenbauer-Gute Freunde Kann Niemand Trennen (Alemania)

Desastroso, innecesario, extrañamente incomodo, y en general pésimo, sí, estoy hablando del ‘Kaiser’. En esta trágica grabación de 1966 expone TODO lo contrario a lo que lo hizo famoso dentro de los terrenos teutones e internacionales. No es solo su blanda y aburrida voz, que parece más vociferar que cantar, o la rara gesticulación y ‘actuación’ del videoclip, es el hecho que este sencillo hecho que este tema sea medianamente popular en Alemania, señoras y señores, todo un producto de los años sesentas digno del ostracismo universal.

Maradona con Pimpinela - Querida Amiga (Argentina)

De letra e interpretación del Diego, este tema de 1986 dedicado a su madre Doña Tota. Muy bien interpretado en compañía de los hermanos Galán y sobretodo bellamente escrito por el Pelusa, ídolo del Nápoles ya en aquella época, al mejor ritmo de la canción melódica gaucha. Tomando lo mejor de dos universos musicales el argentino y el italiano (que de coexistencia ya llevan muchas décadas de la mano) este trio nos regala en pocos minutos una bella tonada de amor hacía al ser materno. Quién pensaría que entre Lucía y Diego se daría un breve y sonado romance años antes de la grabación de este sencillo, como quién dice, Diego nunca tuvo las manos quietas.

Kevin Keegan - Head Over Heels In Love (Inglaterra)

Ampuloso, bombástico y completamente inexplicable resulta este sencillo de 1979 grabado por una de las máximas leyendas del balompié británico, quién en efecto de su fama por aquel entonces en tierras Teutonas logró llegar inexplicablemente al top 10 en los charts alemanes. Mucho hay que decir aquí, empezando por la extraña escogencia de Pop casi de mitad de los 70s en albor de los años ochentas, la expresión casi pasmada de Keegan, lo exagerado y aparatoso de los arreglos de cuerdas y vocales del coro, en fin, toda una cátedra de porque se acabaron los setentas.

Jese Rodriguez (Jey M) - Yo Sabia (España)

La última perla encontrada en La Fabrica, el sistema de juveniles y cantera del Real Madrid, Jesé Rodriguez, nos regala esta empachada con autotune y virilidad casi misógina perla de Reggaeton del nuevo milenio. No hay nada peor que un cantante ‘urbano’ (como odio ese termino a veces) pretendiendo cantar ‘bien’ corregido con el autotune, todo un espectáculo digno de una decadencia rampante al retumbe de cualquier parlante que toque este beat, ahora que lo pienso, quizás este sea el antes y el después que marco la incipiente carrera deportiva del canario, no?

Faustino ‘El Tino’ Asprilla con El Grupo Niche - Tinogol (Colombia)

‘Ya no morí con la ilusión de cantar’ así empieza esta bella y sabrosa composición visionaria del fallecido maestro chocoano Jairo Varela quién para el ’94 previo al Mundial de Estados Unidos invito al Tino a hacer parte de esta idea, bajo el revuelo y la convulsión nacional, pues se trataba de dos mega colosos nacionales: por un lado Grupo Niche, institución salsera nacional y del otro Faustino Hernán, quién para aquel entonces ya se había consagrado como campeón de Europa con el Parma de Italia, dándonos como resultado la impensada colisión magnánima de sentir chocoano, que tanto como en el fútbol como en la música siempre goza de una superioridad en el ámbito nacional a pesar de su letargo político por décadas en el acontecer nacional.

Carlos Tévez con Piola Vago - Déjala (Argentina)

En un digno acto del más salvaje nepotismo ‘El Apache’ colaboró vocalmente con algunos temas de esta agrupación, de la cual hace parte su hermano Diego, de Cumbia Villera (o lo que en mi opinión podría ser visto mejor como una Neo-Electro-Cumbia(?)), dando a pedir de boca para estas lineas una cacofonía retumbante que nada se asemeja a los arquetipos musicales argentinos (a los Piazollas, Ceratis o Spinettas). La dupla Zurdo-Tévez se carea por el cariño de una muchacha, y como si de un objeto burdo se tratara pelean por su propiedad, esperemos que con toda la fortuna dispuesta hoy por hoy por el Argentino JAMÁS se le ocurra incursionar en el campo musical.

Terry Vernables con Rider - England Crazy (Inglaterra)

Llevando las riendas de este improbable elenco de futbolistas tenemos al mítico ‘El Tel’ británico, el gran técnico de Dagenham, cierra con broche de oro con este delicado y exquisito tema de swing al mejor estilo de los cincuentas. Con una voz más que sobresaliente para la ocasión, Vernables, cuyos padres eran cantantes, nos sorprende con este tema compuesto para la Copa Mundo de 2002 mostrándonos una más de sus facetas. Cabe recordar que el técnico también fungió en cierto momento como novelista, quién mejor que este señor para llevar las riendas de este que sería el equipo más díscolo y extravagante de la humanidad.

De no ser por un fatídico accidente automovilístico quizás no hubiésemos tenido a una de las voces más celebres de la lengua española, sino a un exitoso portero sacado de la Fabrica Blanca (y un abogado).
