It's the festive season, and so I'm highlighting some gowns that embody holiday spirit in color, shape, and form.
Starting with this ball gown from the late 1870s. Though the Met Museum has absolutely zero text to describe it, they did include a picture of the tag, which lets us know exactly who wore this gown: Princess, later Queen, Alexandra. The tag reads "by special appointment - Dressmaker - to H.R.H. The Princess of Wales - ELISE - 170 Regent St London."
So, we know this taffeta confection was made specifically for then Princess Alexandra by a woman Madame Elise, a fashion house run by Elizabeth Marie Louise Jaeger. Madame Elise was actually quite well-known, and not always for good reasons. In the 1860s, the lace warehouse came under fire when a young woman in her employ died of apoplexy (what we now call a stroke) due to working conditions. This, thankfully, led to demands for more oversight in dressmaking houses.
This gown, however, is peak First Bustle Era, and is rather jolly. The playful asymmetry is a lovely departure from the relative balance of previous decades, and the train is a thing of beauty. Black and red are a personal favorite. The flowers almost look like poinsettias.

One Dress a Day Challenge
Anything Goes December
White Christmas / Rosemary Clooney as Betty Haynes
This was one of @coeli1000's suggestions for the last month of green. I don't know why I didn't feature it then, because I do love it! Looks like velvet, and the color is just scrumptious. The crossed strings around the neckline add a touch of visual interest. I also like the double pearl bracelet. All in all, it's a very festive dress, and it's a shame that it doesn't get more screen time.

There's just not enough green velvet these days during the holidays. Fun fact, Santa originally had a host of suit colors: green, tan, red, and white. But through the persistent marketing of the Coca-Cola company, his "official" color became red in the 1880s. Probably the most impactful marketing ploy of all time.
This dress, dating from about 1900, is a perfect example of why I find silk velvet so amazing. Because of all of the tiny, tiny fibers, it both absorbs light and then reflects it depending on the cut of the fibers and the lighting. Here, there doesn't seem to be a lot of sheen, but it absolutely soaks up the light! Paired with all those gorgeous sequins, and wow.
Sequins have also been around for a LOT longer than most people think, since it's just a shiny, flat bead. This particular design is just stunning, and so very Edwardian. Plus, it's GREEN, and y'all already know how I feel about green dresses.
From Augusta Auctions.

One Dress a Day Challenge
January: Red Redux
Clueless / Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz
Cher wears a couple of red minidresses during the movie, but this one is the Alaïa! The other one is fine (see below), but a quick comparison shows how small details can make a difference even on a dress with so little to it. The different shoulder straps and neckline give this one a much more sophisticated look.
Cher wears this dress to a Christmas party. Mona May, the costume designer, made the jacket.
